GAETANO "TOM" DANZA, 64, of Middletown died June 14 at Bayshore Community Hospital, Holmdel. Born in the Bronx, N.Y., he resided in Middletown since 1984. He was employed by the New York City Transit Authority for 20 years, retiring in 1996. He is survived by his wife, Rita Sommantico Danza of Middletown; his son, Peter G. Danza of Eatontown; his daughter and son-in-law, Elizabeth A. and Charles of Hazlet; two sisters, Phyllis Hickey of Ridgewood, and Mary Jane Capobianco of Harrington Park, and two grandsons.
JANE NAYLOR SAUER, 75, of Charlotte, N.C., and formerly Long Branch, died June 6. Born in New York City, she resided in Long Branch most of her life before moving to Charlotte in 1991. She was a former member of St. Luke’s United Methodist Church, Long Branch. She was predeceased by her husband, Winfield Sauer. She is survived by two daughters, Susan McKillop of Charlotte, and Lynda Keevil of Martinez, Ga.; two grandsons; and two great-grandsons. SALLY M. HIGGINS, 84, of Aberdeen died June 13 at Bayshore Community Hospital, Holmdel. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., she resided in Aberdeen the past 40 years. She was a saleswoman for J.C. Penney, Parlin, for 15 years, retiring in 1978. She was a communicant of St. Benedict’s Roman Catholic Church, Holmdel. She was predeceased by her husband, John J. Higgins Sr. in 1992; and her sisters, Helen Deghuee and Mary Murphy. She is survived by her son, John Higgins Jr. of Point Pleasant; four daughters, Barbara Boksan of Bethlehem, Pa., Betty Williams of Fair Haven, and Rosemary Higgins and Margie DeBeVoise, both of Aberdeen; her brother, Charles Randel of Port Washington, N.Y.; and four grandchildren. A Mass of Christian Burial was offered at St. Benedict’s Roman Catholic Church, Holmdel. Interment was at Brigadier General William C. Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Arnytown. MICHAEL R. FECHILLAS, 60, of East Brunswick died June 15 in the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, Newark. Surviving are his wife, Linda Warger Fechillas; a daughter, Sandra Fechillas of Red Bank; his mother, Josephine Janowski Fechillas of Linden; a sister, June Jacobs of Brick; and his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Gloria and Myron Warger of North Brunswick. A Mass was offered at St. Bartholomew’s Church, East Brunswick. Interment was in Elm Ridge Cemetery, North Brunswick. FLORENCE MOREY STURT, 72, of Matawan died June 17 at The Center for Hospice Care, Long Branch. Born in Jersey City, she resided in Eatontown for 50 years before to moving to Matawan one year ago. She was a dog groomer at Flo’s Happy Clipper, Eatontown. She was a member of Grace Christian Church, Tinton Falls. She was predeceased by her husband of 47 years, Robert C. Sturt, in 1996. She is survived by a daughter, Dana Lee Granato of Eatontown; two brothers, George Morey of Old Bridge, and Edward Morey of Matawan; three sisters, Anna Walling of Matawan, Loretta Krampert of Florida, and Patricia Ann Morey of South Carolina; and two grandchildren. A funeral service was offered at Grace Christian Church, Tinton Falls. Interment was at Shoreland Memorial Gardens, Hazlet. KATHARINA SCHROTER BURNS, 73, of Toms River died June 19 at home. Born in Vohburg, Germany, she moved to the United States in 1960 and lived in Long Branch from 1968 until moving to Toms River four years ago. She was a retired waitress at various restaurants in the Eatontown area. She was a communicant of St. Dorothea’s Roman Catholic Church, Eatontown. She was a member of a German-American club. She was predeceased by her husband, William P. Burns in 1997. She is survived by her brother and sister. A Mass of Christian Burial was offered at St. Dorothea’s Roman Catholic Church, Eatontown. Interment was at Woodbine Cemetery

KATHERINE VELEDA GREENWOOD, 83, of Long Branch died June 20 at Monmouth Medical Center, Long Branch, after a brief illness. Born in Long Branch, she was a lifelong resident. Mrs. Greenwood was a retired shift supervisor at Artlin Mills, Long Branch. Prior to that, she worked for the U.S. Government at Camp Coles during World War II. She was a member of Second Baptist Church, Long Branch. She served as Sunday school superintendent and teacher, and was also involved with the junior choir at the church. Her activities included membership in Club 13, Long Branch; spending time with her family, traveling, and gardening. She was predeceased by her husband, Archie Sr.; a brother, William Simms; and two sisters, Lucy Simms and Mary Irving. She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Archie and Tonya Greenwood of Neptune; a daughter, Veleda Greenwood of Neptune; a brother-in-law, Agnew Greenwood of Long Branch; two granddaughters; one great-grandson; and several nieces and nephews. A funeral service was held at Second Baptist Church, followed by interment at Monmouth Memorial Park, Tinton Falls. JOHN PETER COTTRELL SR., 72, of Neptune, formerly of Freehold Township, died June 22 at home. He was born in Freehold Township and had lived there and in Ocean Grove, before moving to Neptune. After his parents death, he moved back to Freehold Township and spent his last months living under hospice care. He was employed by New Jersey Natural Gas Co. for 47 years, with most of his employment in the customer service department. He was an exempt member of the Unexcelled Fire Department, Neptune. He was a member of I.B.E.W. Local No. 1820 and a member of the Lamp Lighters Club, and the Gas Light Retirees Club of the New Jersey Natural Gas Co. He was predeceased by a son, John Peter Cottrell II, in 2000. Surviving are his wife of 52 years, Marjorie Tephford Cottrell of Neptune; a son, Frank M. of Howell; two daughters, Marjorie H. Wildman of Eatontown; and Francine M. Cottrell of Jackson; a brother, Kenneth Donald Cottrell of Freehold Township; three sisters, Betty Grubby of Freehold Township, Loretta Price of Howell, and Laura Cartwright of Toms River; nine grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Interment was in Maplewood Cemetery, Freehold Township.
THOMAS B. O’BRIEN, 74, of Hazlet died June 12 at Arnold Walter Nursing Home, Hazlet. Born in Hazlet, he lived most of his life in Keansburg before moving to Hazlet three years ago. He was a switchman for N.J. Bell System, Middletown, for 33 years, retiring in 1986. He served with the U.S. Navy during World War II, and the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict. He was a founding member and ex-deputy mayor of the Keansburg Borough Council, a founding member of the Keansburg Municipal Utilities Authority, and also served on the Keansburg Planning and zoning boards. He was a life member of the New Point Comfort Fire Company, Keansburg, and ex-chief of the Keansburg Fire Department. He was also a member of the Keansburg Board of Education, and the Telephone Pioneers of America. He was predeceased by a brother, Eugene O’Brien. He is survived by his former wife, Joan Clark O’Brien of Hazlet; two daughters, Kathleen J. Pfleger of Middletown, and Pegeen Commiso of Pine Beach; two sons, Thomas O’Brien of Middletown, and Timothy O’Brien of Shrewsbury; three brothers, William O’Brien of Jackson, Edward O’Brien of Everett, Wash., and Richard O’Brien of Cullowhee, N.C.; and nine grandchildren. Visitation will be June 14 from 2-4 p.m. and 6-7:30 p.m. at John F. Pfleger Funeral Home, Middletown.
