FLORENCE R. KNICE, 80, of Venice, Fla., died June 19 at home. Mrs. Knice was born in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. She moved to Portland, Ore., in 1926; to New York City in 1932; and resided in Woodbury, N.Y., Summit, and Mantoloking before moving to Venice in 1987. Mrs. Knice was employed by the Shell Oil Co. for 29 years before her retirement in 1979. She was a 1937 graduate of St. Michael’s Academy, New York City; a member of the Plantation Golf and Country Club, Plantation, Fla.; and a life member of the Trade Winds Chapter of Deborah Hospital Foundation. Mrs. Knice was predeceased by her husband, Joseph W., who died in 1995. Surviving are two sons and daughters-in-law, Donald J. and Beth S. Knice of Lincroft, and Philip J. and Leanne M. Knice of Freehold; a sister, Ursula R. Roth of LaJolla, Calif.; four grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Memorial services were held at Christ United Methodist Church, Venice, Fla.
IRIS T. MERCER, 42, of Freehold, died June 24 at CentraState Medical Center, Freehold Township. Born in Neptune, she was a lifelong resident of Freehold. Mrs. Mercer was a 1974 graduate of Freehold High School and a graduate of the Monmouth Bible Institute. She was a member of the Second Baptist Church, Freehold. Surviving are her husband, Andrew G.; three daughters, Demetria Daniels, Andrea Mercer and Jweda Mercer, all at home; her parents, Euwanna Daniels of Miami, Fla., and Jweda Daniels of Freehold; five brothers, Wallace Myers of Lakewood, Craig Daniels, Anthony Daniels and Philip Daniels, all of Freehold, and Vincent Daniels of Louisiana; five sisters, Janet Regins of Freehold, Rose Mary Myers of Howell, Kate Daniels of Neptune, Deanna Myers of Pleasantville, and Euanna Daniels of Miami, Fla.; and two grandchildren. Funeral services were held at the Second Baptist Church, under the direction of the Freeman Funeral Home, Freehold.
THOMAS K. RASMUSSEN, 48, of Freehold Township died July 1 at Rancocas Hospital, Willingboro. Born in Neptune Township, he resided in Howell and Freehold Township for most of his life. Mr. Rasmussen was the owner and operator of a furniture repair business for many years, and for the past three years was a service technician at Nostalgia Oak Warehouse, Englishtown. He was a disc jockey and played keyboard for several country bands in the local area. Mr. Rasmussen was a former member of the First Presbyterian Church, Freehold. Surviving are a son, Brandon, and a daughter, Jenna, both of Washington Township; his parents, Lawrence and Mildred Rasmussen of the Villages, Howell; and a brother, Larry of Freehold Township. Funeral services were held at the Freeman Funeral Home, Freehold. Memorial donations may be made to Deborah Heart and Lung Center, P.O. JOSEPH EARL "JOHNNY" TILTON, 88, of Freehold died June 27 at CentraState Medical Center, Freehold Township. Born in Newark, he had resided in Asbury Park before moving to Freehold in 1918. Mr. Tilton had been employed at General Motors, Linden, for 25 years, and later worked as a technician for the County of Monmouth, Freehold, for 20 years, retiring in 1973. He was a communicant of St. Rose of Lima R.C. Church, Freehold, where he served as an usher for 50 years. Mr. Tilton was predeceased by his wife, Anna May Hanaway Tilton, who died in 1973; and a brother, John Tilton. Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Robert E. and Diane W. Tilton, of Manasquan; a daughter and son-in-law, Karen T. and Henry Gutzan of Manalapan; two sisters, Louise Salvano and Mary Gerardo; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and his friend, Marian VanCleaf of Freehold. The funeral liturgy was celebrated at St. Rose of Lima Church, followed by interment at St. Rose of Lima Cemetery, Freehold Township. The Higgins Memorial Home, Freehold, was in charge of arrangements.
ESTA ZIMMERMAN, 83, of Hazlet, died May 4 at home. Born in New York City, she lived in Manalapan for 16 years before moving to Hazlet two years ago. Mrs. Zimmerman was past president of B’nai Brith Covered Bridge Chapter, Manalapan, and also Hadassah. She was predeceased by her husband, Abraham, in 1991. Surviving are two daughters, Sharon Cohen of Marlboro, and Aileen Deutch of Malvern, Pa.; one brother, Bernard Goldner of Brooklyn, N.Y.; one sister, Tillie Braff of the Bronx, N.Y.; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Services were under the direction of Bloomfield-Cooper Jewish Chapels Inc., Manalapan.
GEORGE W. ROBERTSON JR., 81, of the Morganville section of Marlboro, died May 11 at home. Born in Greece, N.Y., he had resided in Roselle Park before moving to Morganville 23 years ago. Mr. Robertson was a boiler maker and layout man, working for Harris Welding and Engineering Co., South Plainfield, for 30 years before retiring 15 years ago. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. Mr. Robertson was predeceased by his wife, Sophie Anna (Harris) Robertson, who died in 1991. Surviving are a son, George W. III, of Rhode Island; two daughters, Lynn Donna Gold, of Phoenix, Ariz., and Diane Rhodes, with whom he lived; two sisters, Lillian Henschel, of Dallas, Texas, and Vivian Beyer, of West Palm Beach, Fla.; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held at the Waitt Funeral Home, Morganville, with the Rev. Scott Brown, of Colts Neck Reform Church, officiating. Interment
was at Clover Leaf Cemetery, Woodbridge.
LAURETTA C. RYAN, 92, died May 3 at her daughter’s home in Freehold. Born in Freehold, she was a lifelong resident. Mrs. Ryan was a telephone operator for New Jersey Bell, Freehold, for many years. She was a communicant of St. Rose of Lima R.C. Church, Freehold; a charter member and former president of St. Rose Senior Citizens Club; and a member of Catholic Daughters of America, Court St. Rose of Lima No. 737. Mrs. Ryan was predeceased by her husband, James C., who died in 1976; and a son and daughter-in-law, T. Robert and Judy Ryan; and a son-in-law, Paul V. Daley Sr. Surviving are three daughters and two sons-in-law, Mary Eleen and James Jackson, Susan and Alan Conover, and Nancy R. Daley, all of Freehold; 18 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. A funeral liturgy was celebrated at St. Rose of Lima Church, followed by interment at St. Rose of Lima Cemetery, Freehold Township. The Freeman Funeral Home, Freehold, was in charge of arrangements. EILEEN SPADAVECCHIA-WALSH, 39, of Jackson Township, died April 24 from injuries sustained in an automobile accident in Jackson Township. Born in Princeton, she had resided in Freehold Township before moving to Jackson Township four years ago. Surviving are her husband, Thomas Walsh; a son, Leonard; and two daughters, Samantha and Danielle, all at home; her parents, Louis and Johanna Moreto, of Freehold Township; her paternal grandmother, Sylvia Moreto, of Freehold Township; three brothers and a sister-in-law, Joseph Moreto and Louis Moreto, both of Freehold Township, and Richard and Sherry Moreto, of Brick Township; and a sister and brother-in-law, Anne Marie and James Quinn, of Freehold. A funeral liturgy was celebrated at St. Robert Bellarmine R.C. Church, Freehold Township, The Freeman Funeral Home, Freehold, was in charge of arrangements.
THOMAS D. STAPLES, 64, of Freehold Township, died April 24 at Bartley Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center, Jackson Township. Born in Trenton, he was a lifelong resident of the Freehold area. Mr. Staples had been employed as a truck driver for Ralph Clayton and Sons, Freehold, since 1974. He was a member of Teamsters Union Local 469, Hazlet; and American Legion Post 54, Freehold. He was a graduate of Freehold High School, class of 1953. Mr. Staples was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran. Surviving are his wife, Rose (Wexler) Staples; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Thomas H., and Michael S. and Rhonda Staples, all of Freehold; his mother and stepfather, Adeline and Carl Dobrosky, of Whiting; a brother, David Staples, of Venice, Fla.; a sister, Patricia Rado, of Jackson Township; two grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held at the Higgins Memorial Home, Freehold, followed by interment at Maplewood Cemetery, Freehold Township.
