GLORIA M. TERRY, 59, of Lakewood, died April 24 at Monmouth Medical Center, Long Branch. Born in Vaughn, N.C., she had lived in Lakewood for the past 45 years. Mrs. Terry was a member of the Greater Emanuel Temple, Asbury Park. Surviving are three sons, Danny of Howell, Steven of Lakewood, and Jason of Randallstown, Md.; five daughters, Theresa Watson, Dorothy Terry, Evelina Harris and Catherine Terry, all of Lakewood, and Jeanetta Watson, of Philadelphia; two brothers, James Smith, of Georgetown, S.C., and George Smith, of Philadelphia; 22 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and eight stepchildren. Funeral services were held at the Intercessory Tabernacle Church, Lakewood, followed by interment at Maplewood Cemetery, Freehold Township. The Higgins Memorial Home, Freehold, was in charge of arrangements.
LEONARD WALKER, 65, of Freehold, died April 26 at CentraState Medical Center, Freehold Township. Born in Manhattan, N.Y., he had lived in Queens, N.Y., before moving to Freehold 30 years ago. Mr. Walker was employed with the Monmouth County Park System at the Howell Golf Course, Howell, for five years; and was a sales associated for Lord & Taylor, Freehold Township, for the past five years. He had previously been employed as vice president of Haynes department store in New Jersey, and director of consumer distributors for Haynes in New York and New Jersey. Mr. Walker was a U.S. Army veteran, and a graduate of Bucknell University, Lewisburg, Pa. Surviving are his wife, Carol (Langrock) Walker; two sons, Alan and Michael J., both of Freehold; and two brothers, Myron, of California, and Alan, of Switzerland. Services were under the direction of Cremation Service of Ocean, Brick.
PETRA ROMERO WANDER, 88, of Freehold Township, died May 8 at CentraState Medical Center, Freehold Township. Born in Puerto Rico, she had resided in New York and in Riverside, Calif., before moving to Freehold Township in 1970. She was the head cashier at Hotel Taft, New York, for 20 years, retiring in 1963. She was a communicant of St. Rose of Lima R.C. Church, Freehold. Surviving are two sons, Anthony Romero, with whom she lived; and Benny Romero, of Wrightstown; one aunt, Carmen Nieves, of Freehold Township; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. A funeral liturgy was celebrated at St. Rose of Lima Church, followed by interment at St. Rose of Lima Cemetery, Freehold Township. The C.H.T. Clayton and Son Funeral Home, Adelphia section of Howell, was in charge of arrangements.
KEVIN C. HUME, 75, of Middletown, died May 16 at Jersey Shore Medical Center, Neptune. He previously lived in Newark and Maryland and resided in Middletown for 45 years. He was employed in Middletown High School security for 15 years, until he retired in 1998. He was also a Customs import specialist for the U.S. Customs Service in Washington, D.C., and New York for 35 years, retiring in 1983. He served in the Navy during World War II and attained the rank of electricians mate 3C. His wife, Jean Marie Hume, predeceased him in 1995. He is survived by a daughter, Elizabeth Ann Hume of Freehold. He was a communicant and usher at St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, New Monmouth, and a member of the Knights of Columbus, Red Bank. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2179 and the Middletown Elks 2179, as well as the Monmouth County St. Vincent DePaul Society. Services were under the direction of The John F. Pfleger Funeral Home, Middletown. Interment
was at Mount Olivet Cemetery, Middletown.
ARTIBANO "ARCHIE" CASTRONOVA, 85, of Freehold, died May 13 at CentraState Medical Center, Freehold Township. He was born in Jersey City and had lived in the Freehold area for more than 70 years. Mr. Castronova was a pizza chef at Federici’s, Freehold, for 30 years before his retirement 20 years ago. Prior to his employment at Federici’s, Mr. Castronova had been employed at the A&M Karagheusian Rug Mill and Eisner’s Coat Factory, both of Freehold; and the Hercules powder plant, Parlin. He was a communicant of St. Rose of Lima R.C. Church, Freehold, where he served as an usher. He was also a volunteer in the cafeteria of St. Rose of Lima School; a member of the St. Rose of Lima Senior Citizens Club; and a former member of the Freehold Council No. 1672 Knights of Columbus, all of Freehold. Mr. Castronova was predeceased by his wife, Mary Marzullo Castronova, who died in 1997. Surviving are a son, Anthony, of Vernon; a daughter, Marie Chapman, of Freehold; two brothers, Fiore, of Freehold Township, and Michael A., of Daytona Beach, Fla.; and four grandchildren. Funeral services were held at the Higgins Memorial Home, Freehold, followed by the funeral liturgy at St. Rose of Lima Church. Interment
was at St. Rose of Lima Cemetery, Freehold Township. Memorial donations may be made to Deborah Heart and Lung Center, Browns Mills.
DORIS JANE HYERS, 88, formerly of Freehold, died May 15 at Genesis Eldercare at Laconia Center, Laconia, N.H. Mrs. Hyers was born in Freehold and resided there until moving to Laconia nine months ago. She was a bookkeeper for the Lopatin Outlet Store, Freehold, and was later employed in the payroll department of the former A&M Karagheusian Rug Co., also in Freehold, until her retirement. Mrs. Hyers was a communicant of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, Freehold; and was a member of its St. Anne Guild, where she served as secretary. She was predeceased by her husband, Theodore R., who died in 1991; her parents, Edward Hayward and Anne Penney Foster; two brothers, J. William Foster and Arthur E. Foster; and a sister, Jessie Woodhouse. Surviving are three brothers, Stanley Foster, of Freehold, Walter H. Foster, of Colts Neck, and Kenneth E. Foster, of Laconia, N.H.; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held at the Freeman Funeral Home, Freehold.
BARBARA JACKEL, 57, of Plumsted Township, died May 19 at Newark Beth Israel Hospital, Newark. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., she had resided in Howell for 30 years before moving to Plumsted Township six months ago. Mrs. Jackel was a secretary at Jersey Shore Medical Center, Neptune, for the past eight years; and earlier had been a bus driver for the Howell Township Board of Education for 12 years. Mrs. Jackel was a communicant of St. Veronica’s R.C. Church, and a life member of the Howell First Aid Rescue Squad No. 1, both of Howell. Surviving are her husband, Theodore; a son and daughter-in-law, Kieth W. and Holly, of Port St. Lucie, Fla.; two daughters and sons-in-law, Diane and Jerry Hayes, of Bayville, Berkeley Township, and Barbara and John Lakomy, with whom she lived; and four grandchildren. Funeral services were held at the Freeman Funeral Home, Freehold, followed by the funeral liturgy at St. Veronica’s Church.
ANTHONY MANNINE, 74, of Englishtown, died May 16 at Pine Brook Care Center, Manalapan. Born in New York City, Mr. Mannine had resided in the Bronx, N.Y., for 38 years before moving to Englishtown in 1995. He was a shoe salesman for Square Shoes, the Bronx, for 20 years, retiring in 1993. Mr. Mannine was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was a communicant of St. Thomas the Apostle R.C. Church, Old Bridge; and a former Eucharistic minister at St. Benedict R.C. Church, the Bronx. Surviving are his wife, Marie Scobbo Mannine; a son, Anthony of Thiells, N.Y.; two daughters, Mary Trace, of Manalapan, and Donna Rachels, of Englishtown; five sisters, Lucy Noble, Carmella D’Alesandro, Grace Minneci, Mary Reitano and Joan Fradella; and eight grandchildren. The funeral liturgy was celebrated at St. Thomas the Apostle Church, followed by entombment at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Hawthorne, N.Y. The Freeman Manalapan-Marlboro Funeral Home, Manalapan, was in charge of arrangements.
