Charles R. Layton
Mr. Layton, 73, of Highlands, died May 28 at Riverview Medical Center, Red Bank. He was a long-time resident of Rumson. He was a retired self-employed plumber at Taylor and Layton Plumbing, Sea Bright. He served with the U.S. Navy, and was an active member of the American Legion, and Veterans of Foreign Wars. He is survived by his wife, Edna Rogers Layton; a son, Charles “Buddy” Layton of Florida; a brother, Reginald C. Layton of Sea Bright; and several grandchildren. A funeral service and interment was at Brig. Gen. William C. Doyle Veterans Cemetery, Arnytown. Arrangements were by John E. Day Funeral Home, Red Bank.
Christina Scala
Ms. Scala, 81, of Red Bank, died May 24 in Red Bank. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., she had resided in Vineland and Woodbridge before moving to Red Bank two years ago. Ms. Scala was a homemaker. She was predeceased by there brothers, Joseph, Edward and Dominick Scala; and a sister, Anna Scala. She is survived by a brother, Andrew Scala of Red Bank; a sister-in-law, Diane Scala; and several nieces and nephews. Interment

David F. Meshowski
Mr. Meshowski, 52, of East Windsor, died March 5 at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, Hamilton. Born in Bayonne, he resided in East Brunswick for several years, prior to moving to East Windsor 13 years ago. He was a program administrator at the State of New Jersey, Department of Prevention of Alcohol and Drug Abuse, Trenton. He is survived by a daughter, Katherine of South Plainfield; his parents, Frank and Olga Skirka Meshowski of Monroe Township; and two sisters and one brother-in-law, Laurie Lang of East Brunswick, and Elaine and Anthony Melone of Oceanport. A funeral service was at Nativity of Our Lord Byzantine Catholic Church, East Brunswick. Interment

Constance S. Smith McNally
Mrs. McNally, 89, of Red Bank, died May 3 at Riverview Medical Center, Red Bank. Born in Lansdowne, Pa., she had resided in Rumson for 30 years before moving to Red Bank. Mrs. McNally was a homemaker. She was active in Planned Parenthood of Central New Jersey and the Shrewsbury Historical Society, as well as the Friends of Monmouth Beach Cultural Center. She was predeceased by her husband, Gerald McNally Sr., in 2000. She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Harry C. Jones Jr. and Marie Castonguay Jones of Houston; three stepsons, Gerald McNally Jr. of Los Angeles, Geoffrey L. McNally of New York City, and Charles G. McNally, and his wife, Michele, of Scarsdale, N.Y.; and four step-grandchildren. The John E. Day Funeral Home, Red Bank, was in charge of arrangements.
Chester Curtis Goss
Mr. Goss, 83, of Tinton Falls, died May 8 at home. He was born in Fort Scott, Kan. He was the retired president and CEO of CIT Corporation and CIT Leasing Corporation, New York City. He served with the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was a member of the New York Bar Association. He was predeceased by three children, Christine, David and Deirdre Goss. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Adrienne Lucey Goss; two sons and daughters-in-law, Dr. Graydon and Eileen Goss of Middletown, and Robert and Nancy Goss of Colts Neck; three daughters and sons-in-law, Virginia and Steven Pollack of Oak Park, Calif., Madonna and Alan Robinson of Shrewsbury, and Adrienne and Gregory McCabe of Furlong, Pa.; 13 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. A memorial Mass will be celebrated May 13 at 10 a.m. at St. Dorothea’s Roman Catholic Church, Eatontown. Arrangements are by John E. Day Funeral Home, Red Bank. Raymond George Patterson Sr.
Mr. Patterson, 75, of Palm Coast, Fla., and formerly of Red Bank, died April 16 in Palm Coast. Born in Red Bank, he and his twin brother were the first set of twins born at Riverview Hospital, Red Bank. Mr. Patterson was a police officer in Red Bank for 32 years, retiring in 1986. He served with the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. He was a volunteer fireman with the Red Bank Independent Engine Company for 50 years, a member of the Red Bank Elks 49 years, and a lifetime member of Policemen’s Benevolent Association Local No. 39. Mr. Patterson was predeceased by two brothers, his twin, Harry, and Eugene. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Florence Marie Patterson; two sons and one daughter-in-law, Raymond and Sharon Patterson Jr. of the Oakhurst section of Ocean Township, and William Patterson of Brooklyn Heights, N.Y.; and three brothers and sisters-in-law, Paul E. and Dorothy Patterson of Holmdel, Donald and Jacqueline Patterson of Red Bank, and Charles and Constance Patterson of Rotonda West, Fla. William “Bill” J. Cooper
Mr. Cooper, of Fair Haven, died May 6 at Riverview Medical Center, Red Bank. Born in Fair Haven, he was a lifelong resident. Mr. Cooper was a locksmith for the United States government at Fort Monmouth, Eatontown, retiring after 44 years. He served with the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a communicant of Our Lady of Fatima Chapel, Ocean Township. Mr. Cooper is survived by his wife, Marie; a daughter, Mary; and a brother and sister-in-law, John and Mary Lou Cooper of Florida. Laird T. “Buck” Stratton
Mr. Stratton, 68, of Rumson, died Nov. 26 in Rumson. Born in South Amboy, he resided in Middletown prior to moving to Rumson 27 years ago. He was a contractor and self-employed at Stratton Construction, Rumson, for 47 years, retiring in 2002. He enjoyed horse races at Monmouth Park, Oceanport, and several sports. He was predeceased by a daughter, Victoria, in 1964. He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Ellen Little Stratton; a daughter and son-in-law, Gail and Paul Zick of Perth Amboy; three sons and daughters-in-law, Stark and Jillian Stratton, and Rick and Joan Stratton, all of Rumson; and Gene and Audrey Stratton of Middletown; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Christina and Joseph Grimley of Oceanport, Carol and William Creed of Whiting, and Patricia and Fernando Peguero of Georgia; a brother, William Stratton of South Amboy; 11 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Harold S. VanBrunt
Mr. VanBrunt, 85, of Rumson, died Nov. 28 at home. He was a lifelong resident of Rumson. He was employed at New Jersey Natural Gas Company for 37 years, retiring in 1986. He served with the U.S. Army Air Force in the South Pacific during World War II from 1942-45. He was a lifelong member and deacon at Rumson Presbyterian Church, and was also a member of the church’s bowling team for several years. He was an exempt member of the Rumson Volunteer Fire Department. He was an avid golfer. He was predeceased by his wife, Marie in 1994; and a brother, Chester in 1992. He is survived by a son, Harold VanBrunt of Ashburn, Va.; two daughters, Susan Donato of Middletown, and Debbie Hughes of Rumson; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. A funeral service was held at Rumson Presbyterian Church. Interment

Robert Edwards
Mr. Edwards, 85, of West Allenhurst, died Dec. 11 at home. Born in Yonkers, N.Y., he had resided in Rumson and Tenafly before moving to West Allenhurst. An engineer and industrialist, Mr. Edwards founded and built EAC Industries, a supplier of electronic and communications products to the U.S. Armed Forces, in 1958, and Radiofone Corp., one of the largest radio paging operations nationwide, in 1971. He held a number of patents on components and processes in the electronics industry. He also directed the design and engineering of a New York-area cellular system, which eventually became the Federal Communications Commission-approved system for that market. Mr. Edwards was predeceased by four brothers, Morris, Nelson, Philip and George Edwards. He is survived by his wife of 33 years, Barbara Maroselli Edwards; a son and daughter-in-law, Marc and Linda Edwards of East Windsor; two daughters and a son-in-law, Jennifer Edwards Kaye and Jeffrey Kay of West Allenhurst, and Barbara Fredericks of Austin, Texas; two sisters, Adele Arslan of Red Bank and Rose Fiegel of Ocala, Fla.; and seven grandchildren.
