PHILLIP RAYNER, 88, of the Belford section of Middletown died July 20 at Riverview Medical Center, Red Bank. Born in Union City, he lived in West New York before moving to Belford 45 years ago. He was a supervisor for Chase Manhattan Bank, New York, for 40 years, retiring in 1974. He was a member and elder for more than 40 years at Middletown Reformed Church. He served with the U.S. Navy during World War II. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Helen Koehler Rayner of Belford; his son, Guy Rayner of Eatontown; and his daughter and son-in-law, Gail and James Alverson of Monmouth Beach. A funeral service was held at Middletown Reformed Church, followed by burial at Fair View Cemetery, Middletown.
FRANK A. BUONO, 84, of Long Branch, died July 20 at home. Born in Jersey City, he resided there until 1984, and summered in Long Branch since 1954. He was the area manager of automotive product sales for Dow Chemical in the tri-state area for 20 years, retiring in 1977. He was a parishioner of and Eucharistic minister at St. Michael’s Roman Catholic Church, West End section of Long Branch. He also co-founded the church’s senior group, the Older and Weiser Club. He served in the U.S. Army as a staff sergeant from 1941-46. He was a volunteer at Monmouth Medical Center, Long Branch, where he received the Volunteer of the Year Award in 1996. He was a member of the Old Guard, Long Branch. He was predeceased by three brothers, Vincent, Thomas and Joseph Buono. He is survived by his wife, Rose M. Viverito Buono of Long Branch; two sisters-in-law, Geraldine and Angela Viverito; and several nieces and nephews. Entombment was at Woodbine Mausoleum, Oceanport. ROBERT E. BOYLE, 76, of West Long Branch, died July 21 at Jersey Shore Medical Center, Neptune. Born in Lakewood, he resided in West Long Branch since 1955. He was a retired automobile sales representative with McDonagh Chrysler and Jeep, East Brunswick, for 17 years. Prior to that, he was the owner of Boyle Rambler, Long Branch; and Coast Dodge, Asbury Park. He was a member, elder, and board of trustees member of First Presbyterian Church, Long Branch. He was a member of the New Jersey Automobile Dealers Association. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Phyllis Ward Boyle; a son, Kevin Boyle of Neptune; four daughters and sons-in-law, Deborah and Frank Melicharek of Bordentown, Janice and Roger Stewart of Ocean, Lois and John Strain of Eatontown, and Colleen and Gerald Crawford of Jackson; a brother, Leslie Boyle of Clarksburg; a sister, Ruth Hallman of Lansing, Mich.; nine grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. A funeral service was held at First Presbyterian Church, Long Branch, followed by interment at Glenwood Cemetery, West Long Branch. MICHAEL J. GALLAS, 83, of Sayreville died July 20 in Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, New Brunswick. He was predeceased by his wife, Esther Karwatt Gallas. Surviving are a son, Michael of Freehold; a daughter, Barbara Bohling of the Toms River section of Dover; a brother, John Mroz of Eatontown; two sisters, Agnes Blaska of Elmwood Park and Ann Sokolowski of Eatontown; four grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter. A Mass was offered at St. Stanislaus Church, Sayreville. Interment
was in the church cemetery.
JAMES RICHARD TUCKER, 67, of the Cream Ridge section of Upper Freehold died July 13 at home. Born in Wyandotte, Mich., he had lived in Ocean Township for 22 years before moving to Cream Ridge in 1989. Mr. Tucker was a retired electrical engineer, employed by the U.S. Defense Department at Fort Monmouth for 33 years. After his retirement, he operated a tree nursery. Mr. Tucker was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War. He was a life member of the I.E.E.E. engineering organization and a member of Allentown United Methodist Church. Mr. Tucker is survived by his wife of 43 years, Mary Rickman Tucker; three sons, Owen R. of Georgetown, Texas, William D. of New York City and Eric R. of Colts Neck; two sisters, Evelyn Kanash of Whiting and Marian Tucker of Red Bank; and four grandchildren. Funeral services were held at Allentown United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Merton A. Steelman officiating. Interment

MARIAN E. COSTELLO, 76, of Middletown died July 21 at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, New York. Born in Jersey City, she previously lived in Keansburg and moved to Middletown in 1953. She was a typist for Mann Temp Services, Red Bank, for 10 years. Prior to that she worked for Fort Monmouth. She was a communicant of St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, New Monmouth section of Middletown. Travel was one of her interests. She was predeceased by her husband, Raymond Costello, in 1998; her daughter, Karen Anne Costello; two sisters, Mildred Schaible and Marguerite Peters; and her brother, Francis Becker. She is survived by two sons and one daughter-in-law, Raymond D. and Judy Costello of Brick, and Kenneth C. Costello of Long Branch; two daughters and sons-in-law, Maureen D. and Tripp Dupree of Rumson, and Claudette S. and John Scoras of Manasquan; eight grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. A funeral liturgy was offered at St. Ann’s Roman Catholic Church, Keansburg, followed by burial at Mount Olivet Cemetery, Middletown.
MARGARET "PEGGY" BESSINGER, 66, of Hazlet died Aug. 14 at home. Born in Newark, she resided in Hazlet most of her life. She was a sales representative for JCS Jewelry and Coin Exchange, Hazlet, for 13 years, retiring in 1999. She was a communicant of Holy Family Roman Catholic Church, Union Beach. She was predeceased by her husband of 36 years, Robert Bessinger in 1995, and two brothers, Alan J. Smith in 1992, and Donald J. Smith in 1992. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Robert "Boe" and Patricia Bessinger of Long Branch; two daughters and one son-in-law, Kim Bessinger of Ocean, and Christina and Tim Hess of Hazlet; her brother, William Smith of West Orange; her sister, Cathy Caputo of South Orange; and several nieces and nephews. A funeral liturgy will be offered Aug. 17 at 10:30 a.m. at Holy Family Roman Catholic Church, Union Beach. Memorial donations may be made to Deborah Hospital Foundation, New Jersey Region, P.O. ROSE KASS, 99, of Long Branch died Aug. 9 at Gateway Care Center, Eatontown. Born in Russia, she moved to Brooklyn, N.Y., in 1910 and relocated to Long Branch in 1927. She was employed at Morris Plate Glass, Red Bank for 20 years, retiring in 1982. Prior to that, she was the owner of Pacific Overalls, Long Branch. She was a member of Temple Beth Miriam, Elberon section of Long Branch, as well as a life member of Hadassah. A volunteer at Monmouth Medical Center, Long Branch, she contributed 8,500 hours of service since 1982. She was predeceased by her first husband, Louis Finkelstein in 1939; and her second husband, Harry M. Kass in 1986. She is survived by two sons, Marvin Finkelstein of Nanuet, N.Y., and Gerald Kass of Eatontown; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Interment
was at Beth Miriam Memorial Park, Neptune.
BARBARA C. REUSS SCHEDLBAUER, 84, of Tinton Falls died Aug. 11 at Blythe House, Tinton Falls. Born in Schenectady, N.Y., she previously lived in Red Bank and Fair Haven, and moved to Tinton Falls two years ago. She was a homemaker. She was a communicant of Church of the Nativity, Fair Haven. Her interests included spending time with her family, reading, exercise, bird watching and gardening. She was predeceased by her husband, Charles M. Schedlbauer, and three sisters, Marie, Betty, and Magdeline. She is survived by her son, Charles L. of Chatham; three daughters, Barbara A. Grimmer of Fair Haven, Melinda S. Johnson of Bayville, and Mary J. Anderson of Leawood, Kan.; nine grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. A Mass of Christian Burial was at Church of the Nativity, followed by interment at Rosedale-Rosehill Cemetery

PIETRO "PETE" J. BRUNO, 51, of Little Silver died Aug. 8 at home. Born in Vallefiorita, Italy, he moved to the Monmouth County area in 1966. He was the owner and operator with his son Peter of Little Silver Auto Sales and Service since 1974. He was predeceased by his father, Saverio Bruno. He is survived by his wife, Jaye, and son, Peter, both of Little Silver; his mother, Rosa Procopio Bruno of Vallefiorita; his brother, Frank, of Lakeworth, Fla.; and one niece and nephew. A funeral Mass and burial were in Vallefiorita.
