ELIZABETH "BETTY" EVANS, 69, of Concord, N.C., formerly of the Belford section of Middletown, died Nov. 16 at North East Medical Center, Concord. Born in Jersey City, she lived in Belford 28 years prior to moving to Concord in 1992. She was a retired crossing guard for the Middletown Police Department, as well as an operator for the Middletown Answering Service, Red Bank. She was a former communicant of St. Clement’s Episcopal Church, Belford. She was predeceased by three brothers, William, Joseph and Thomas Hammill. She is survived by three sons and two daughters-in-law, William Evans III of the New Monmouth section of Middletown, Thomas J. and Debi Evans of Matawan, and Robert A. and Michelle Evans of Monroe, N.C.; her daughter, Patricia M. Evans of Concord; her brother, Richard Hammill of Brick; and five grandchildren. A funeral gathering will be Nov. 21 at 10 a.m. at the John F. Pfleger Funeral Home, Middletown. A funeral liturgy will follow at 11 a.m. at St. Clement’s Episcopal Church, Belford. Burial will be at Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Iselin.
ROSALEAN B. MATTHEWS, 90, of Rumson died Nov. 10 at home. Born in Philadelphia, she lived in Tinton Falls before moving to Rumson. Mrs. Matthews was a homemaker. She was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church, Red Bank. She was predeceased by her husband, Dr. William M. Matthews Sr. Mrs. Matthews is survived by a son, William M. Matthews of Rumson. CLARENCE F. "MONTY" MONTGOMERY, 82, of Long Branch died Nov. 13 at Jersey Shore Medical Center, Neptune. Born in Temple, Texas, he was a lifelong resident of Long Branch. He was a retired insurance investigator for Maryland Casualty Insurance for 15 years, retiring 20 years ago. Prior to that, he was employed by the Long Branch Police Dept. PBA Local No. 10. He was a parishioner of Our Lady Star of the Sea Roman Catholic Church, Long Branch. He served with the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a member of the National Guard Reserves, as well as a member of the Long Branch Chapter of Deborah Hospital. He is survived by his wife, America M. Anastasia Montgomery of Long Branch; two sons and daughters-in-law, John R. and Carol Montgomery of Port Charlotte, Fla., and William N. and Nancy Montgomery of West Long Branch; five grandchildren; and two great-granddaughters. A Mass of Christian Burial was offered at Our Lady Star of the Sea Roman Catholic Church. Entombment was at Woodbine Mausoleum, Oceanport. IRENE A. SPELLMAN, 91, of Holmdel died Nov. 17 at Bayshore Community Hospital, Holmdel. Born in New York City, she lied in Hazlet prior to moving to Holmdel two years ago. She was a homemaker. She was predeceased by her husband, William A. Spellman, and her son, Robert Spellman, in 1991. She is survived by two sons, William and David Spellman; two daughters, Judith Walsh and Irene Goomishian; 13 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.
PATRICIA A. REIDY, 71, of Red Bank died Nov. 7 at home. Born in Jersey City, she lived in the Belford section of Middletown prior to moving to Red Bank four years ago. She was a data entry person for Prudential Insurance Co., Holmdel, for 15 years, retiring in 1995. She was a member of Adorers at the Adoration Chapel at St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, New Monmouth section of Middletown. She was predeceased by her husband, Joseph Reidy in 1983. She is survived by her son, Patrick Reidy of Highlands; her sister, Blanche Schulz of Toms River; and her brother, Charles Lennon of Avon. A funeral liturgy was offered at St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, New Monmouth. Burial was at Forest Green Park Cemetery, Morganville. JAMES J. "JIM" McEVOY, 72, of Middletown died Nov. 15 at home. Born in Newark, he lived in West Long Branch prior to moving to Middletown 23 years ago. He was a salesman for B&B Beverage, Long Branch, retiring in 1990. Prior to that he was a life insurance salesman and liability adjuster. He served with the U.S. Army in its counter intelligence corps during the Korean War. He was a former communicant as well as an usher and member of the Holy Name Society at St. Jerome’s Roman Catholic Church, West Long Branch. He was active at St. Jerome’s Grammar School, serving as a basketball coach, assistant baseball coach for its Little League team, and helping with Pop Warner football. He is survived by his wife of 23 years, Patricia J. Mulvaney McEvoy of Middletown; three sons and two daughters-in-law, James J. and Sally L. McEvoy Jr. of Ocean Township, Kevin M. McEvoy of Long Branch, and Michael J. and Lorraine P. McEvoy of Rumson; his daughter, Mary Beth McEvoy of Long Branch; two stepsons; and seven grandchildren. A Mass of Christian Burial was offered at St. James Roman Catholic Church, Red Bank. Interment

WILLIAM J. RILEY, 67, of the Belford section of Middletown died Nov. 16 at home. Born in Jersey City, he lived most of his life in Belford. He was a mail carrier for the Port Monmouth post office for 30 years, retiring in 1996. He served in the U.S. Air Force, attaining the rank of Sp 4. He is survived by his wife, Marie Riley of Belford; his daughter and son-in-law, Mary Ann and Robert Nobile of Middletown; two sons and one daughter-in-law, Matthew Riley of Marlboro, and William and Dawn Riley of the Navesink section of Middletown; his brother, Robert Riley of Port Monmouth; and six grandchildren. DOLORES E. TYBURCY, 76, of Middletown died Nov. 11 at Meridian Nursing and Rehabilitation, Red Bank. Born in West Orange, she lived there until relocating to Middletown in 1954. She was a homemaker. Her activities included sewing, cooking, and enjoying time with her family. She was predeceased by two sisters, Muriel and Vivian. She is survived by her husband of 52 years, Raymond Steven Tyburcy of Middletown; two sons, Kenneth Richard Tyburcy and Douglas Steven Tyburcy, both of Middletown; and two grandsons. Interment

HELEN "RONNIE" BRUNTZ, 76, of Hazlet died Nov. 11 at Riverview Medical Center, Red Bank. Born in Paterson, she lived in the Belford section of Middletown for 47 years, moving to Hazlet 14 years ago. She was a retired waitress for Hofbrauhaus, Atlantic Highlands, for 30 years. She was a communicant of St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, New Monmouth section of Middletown. She was very active in volunteer work, donating more than 800 hours to Central Jersey Blood Bank, Shrewsbury; and helping at Meals on Wheels for three years. She was predeceased by her husband, George A. Bruntz in 1993; two brothers, Patrick Jones and Martin Jones; and a sister, Mitzi Hoefling. She is survived by two sons and one daughter-in-law, Michael G. and Cindy Bruntz of Atlantic Highlands, and Kevin E. Bruntz of Mount Pleasant, S.C.; two daughters and sons-in-law, Susan and Peter Tommaso of Middletown, and Denise and Thomas McDermott of Atlantic Highlands; two sisters, Norine Adamo of Toms River, and Marilyn Almond of West Palm Beach, Fla.; eight grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; and several nieces and nephews. A funeral gathering will be Nov. 16 at 8:30 a.m. at John F. Pfleger Funeral Home, Middletown. A funeral liturgy will be offered Nov. 16 at 9:30 a.m. at St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, New Monmouth. JOHN G. STRAUSS, 82, of Keyport died Nov. 8 at home. Born in Keansburg, he was a lifelong resident of Keyport. He was a millwright for Hercules Powder, Parlin, for 45 years, retiring in 1983. He served with the U.S. Army during World War II. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Edith Condrup Strauss of Keyport; three sons, John G. Strauss Jr. of Keyport, Dan A. Strauss of Washington, and Gerald A. Strauss of Pennsylvania; his daughter, Marie A. Folio of Snyderville, Pa.; 11 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Interment
