MARY A. MERRELL, 89, of Freehold died Sept. 11 at home. Born in Bradville, she lived in Keyport prior to moving to Freehold 15 years ago. She was a homemaker. She was a communicant of St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church, Keyport. She was predeceased by her husband, William Merrell in 1964. She is survived by her daughter, Gail Sieben of Freehold; three sons, William Merrell of Freehold, Richard Merrell of Ocean Township, and Robert Merrell of Phillipsburg; three grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter. A funeral Mass was offered at St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church, followed by burial at St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Keyport.
EDWARD F. BOEHM, 80, of Venice, Fla., formerly of Holmdel, died Sept. 12 at Anne Arundel Medical Center, Fla. Born in New York City, he resided in Holmdel and retired to Florida in 1984. He was a retired senior vice president of Phelps Dodge Communications Products Co., Marlboro. He served with the U.S. Marines during World War II in the South Pacific. He was a communicant of St. Catherine’s Roman Catholic Church, Holmdel. His hobbies included golf and fishing. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Mildred H. Boehm of Venice, Fla.; two sons, Dr. Clifford E. Boehm of Ellicott City, Md., and Michael Boehm of Brick; three daughters, Irene Redmiles of Davidsonville, Md., Mary Fetzer of Toms River, and Laura Bowne of Edgewater, Md.; and 10 grandchildren. MARY COPPOLA, 82, of Hazlet died Sept. 14 at St. Barnabas Hospital, Livingston. Born in Queens, N.Y., she lived there for 40 years until moving to Hazlet six years ago. She was a homemaker. She was a communicant of St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, New Monmouth section of Middletown. She was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Ladies Auxiliary, Post No. 2179, Port Monmouth section of Middletown. She was predeceased by her husband of 45 years, Rocco Coppola in 2000. She is survived by her son, Joseph Coppola of Massapequa, N.Y.; her daughter, Maria Miller of Port Monmouth; two granddaughters; and one grandson. A funeral liturgy was offered at St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, followed by entombment at Woodbridge Memorial Park, Woodbridge.
JAMES P. KEOUGH, 51, of Hazlet died Sept. 16 at Robert Packer Hospital, Sayre, Pa. Born in New York City, he lived there until moving to Hazlet 23 years ago. He was an active conductor for NJ Transit the past 28 years. He served with the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War. He is survived by his wife, Karen Keough of Hazlet; his son, James P. Keough Jr. of Hazlet; his daughter, Kimberly A. Keough of Hazlet; his mother-in-law, Muriel Cleary of New York City; five sisters, Barbara Devaney of Fairview, Margaret Barnable of North Bergen, Mary Slane of Jersey City, Carol Latavish of Guttenberg, and Cathy Bogle of Union; two brothers, Gil Keough of Edison, and Dan Keough of Clifton; and one grandson. Visitation will be Sept. 19 from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m., and Sept. 20 from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. at Day Funeral Home, Keyport. A funeral Mass will be Sept. 21 at 9:15 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church, Keyport, followed by burial at St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Keyport. EDITH J. TAVAGLIONE DAMATO, 77, of the Port Monmouth section of Middletown died Sept. 17 at Riverview Medical Center, Red Bank. Born in Orange, she lived most of her life in Port Monmouth. She was a homemaker. Her hobbies included bingo and traveling to Atlantic City. She was predeceased by her husband, Alfred Damato, in 2000. She is survived by three daughters and two sons-in-law, Cecie and Felix Binaco of Middletown, Donna and Jack Cusick of Port Monmouth, and Susan Porcello of Highlands; four sisters, Vintry Dombeck of East Orange, Christine Tavaglione of West Orange, Lena Cocozziello of Bricktown, and Mary Intile of West Orange; her brother, Michael Tavaglione of Manahawkin; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Visitation will be Sept. 19 from 1-4 p.m., and a funeral service will be at 3:30 p.m. at John F. Pfleger Funeral Home, Middletown.
DENIS CLARK HYLAND, 68, of Matawan died Sept. 9 at Jersey Shore Medical Center, Neptune. Born in New York City, he lived there before moving to Aberdeen in 1963. He was employed in the fields of publishing and music, owned his own music production business, and most recently taught music. He was a communicant of St. Benedict Roman Catholic Church, Holmdel, where he served as a Eucharistic minister, lector, cantor, and minister of care. He served as a journalist in the U.S. Navy from 1955-57. He was predeceased by his first wife, Carol Horan Hyland, in 1991. He is survived by his wife, Mary Ann Faas of Matawan; three daughters, Anne Marie Sparaco of Wayside, Catherine Zavorskas of Aberdeen, and Mary Elizabeth Koewer of Chester; three sons, Denis Hyland of New York City, James Hyland of Toms River, and Terence Hyland of Howell; his sister, Mary Skahill of Broomall, Pa.; his brother, Kevin Hyland of Newtown; and 14 grandchildren. A funeral Mass was offered at St. Benedict Roman Catholic Church, followed by interment at St. Gabriel Cemetery, Marlboro. Memorial donations may be made to the Denis C. MARIE A. HERMANNS, 75, of Middletown died July 11 at Jersey Shore Medical Center, Neptune. Born in Jersey City, she resided in Middletown the last 40 years. She was employed for several years at Lock Stock and Barrel, Rumson, retiring in 1973. She was an active volunteer and fund-raiser for Deborah Heart and Lung Center, Browns Mills, from whom she received several awards for her years of service. An accomplished artist, she received many ribbons and awards in local and state shows for her paintings. She was predeceased by her husband, Robert A. Hermanns, in 1984. She is survived by two daughters, Carol Gormally of Litchfield, Conn., and Gail Hermanns of Asbury Park; her son, Robert A. Hermanns of Middletown; and one granddaughter. JOHANNAH B. GRASSI, 74, of Hazlet died Sept. 1 at Bayshore Community Hospital, Holmdel. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., she lived there until relocating to Hazlet 23 years ago. She was a homemaker. She was predeceased by her brother, Francis Whalen in 1999. She is survived by her husband, Patrick Grassi of Hazlet; her son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Jennifer Grassi of Van Nuys, Calif.; two daughters and sons-in-law, Kristine and Richard Broschart of Hazlet, and Tesa and Michael Biamonte of Dunedin, Fla.; two sisters, Rita O’Neil of Flemington, and Loretta Docken of Montclair; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. A funeral liturgy was offered at Holy Family Roman Catholic Church, Hazlet.
DANIEL I. BENNETT, 86, of Keansburg died Sept. 4 at Bayshore Community Hospital, Holmdel. Born in Middletown, he lived in Keansburg most of his life. He was a truck driver for Hutchinson Inc., Matawan, for 35 years, retiring in 1981. He was also a produce peddler in Keansburg for 35 years. He was a communicant of St. Ann’s Roman Catholic Church, Keansburg. His club affiliations included the Twin Hill Rod Hunting Club, and Pine Rod & Gun Club, Jackson. He was predeceased by his wife, Marguerite Creevy Bennett, in 1999. He is survived by three sons, Daniel Bennett of the Port Monmouth section of Middletown, Alton Bennett of Middletown, and Richard Bennett of the Belford section of Middletown; two daughters, Barbara Colton of Union Beach, and Joan Davis of Middletown; 14 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. A funeral liturgy was celebrated at St. Ann’s Roman Catholic Church, followed by burial at Fair View Cemetery, Middletown.
FLORENCE MARCUS JANKOWITZ, 84, formerly of East Brunswick and Hazlet, died Sept. 4 in the Central New Jersey Jewish Home for the Aged, Somerset section of Franklin. Her husband, Louis, died in 1978. Surviving are a daughter, Sharon Margolin of Monroe; and three grandchildren. Graveside services were held at Beth Israel Cemetery, Woodbridge.
