Ronald Bruce Tate

Services for Ronald Bruce Tate of Hobbs will be at 10 a.m. Monday, Nov. 20, at Chapel of Hope Funeral Home Chapel.

The Rev. LaVoid Ford will officiate.

Memorial services will be conducted by the Hobbs Masonic Lodge.

Burial will follow at 3 p.m. (CST) at Mount Evergreen Cemetery in Pecos, Texas, under the direction of Chapel of Hope Funeral Home.

Mr. Tate, 58, died Tuesday, Nov. 14, in Intercoastal City, La. He was born on July 4, 1942, in Edna, Texas.

He married Erie Bolden on Dec. 6, 1963, in Franklin, La.

Mr. Tate was a member of the Pecos Masonic Lodge. He was a 32nd degree Mason.

Survivors include his wife, of the home; one son, Ron Tate of Lafayette, La.; his stepfather, Tommy Cosper of Horatio, Ark.; and one grandson.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Willie and Lois Tate.

Lottie P. Coppedge
Services are pending with Chapel of Hope Funeral Home for Lottie P. Coppedge of Hobbs.
Mrs. Coppedge, 87, died Friday, Nov. 17, at Lea Regional Medical Center. She was born Feb. 19, 1913, in Kausman, Texas.
Survivors include a daughter, Glenda Sue Allphin.

Robert W. Lindsey
Services are pending with Chapel of Hope Funeral Home for Robert W. "Bob" Lindsey of Hobbs.
Mr. Lindsey, 78, died Thursday, Nov. 16, at his home. He was born Nov. 14, 1922, in Humboldt, Kan.
Survivors include his wife, Joan, of the home; and a daughter, Lana Martin of Hobbs.

Alejo E. Valenzuela
Funeral Mass for Alejo E. Valenzuela of Artesia, father of Soki Kesner of Hobbs, will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 20, at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church in Artesia.
The Rev. Vincent Petersen will officiate. Burial will follow in Woodbine Cemetery in Artesia under the direction of Calvary Memorial Funeral Home. Visitation will be held from 4-9 p.m. today at the funeral home and from 4-7 p.m. on Sunday at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church.
Rosary will be said at 7 p.m. on Sunday at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church.
Mr. Valenzuela, 85, died Friday, Nov. 17, in Andrews. He was born July 17, 1915, in Pecos, Texas. He married Margarita Morales in Ojinaga, Chihuahua, Mexico. She preceded him in death.
He worked as a farmer. He moved to Artesia from Pecos 45 years ago.
Survivors include four sons, Alejo E. Valenzuela Jr., Enrique Valenzuela, Edmundo Valenzuela and Oscar Valenzuela, all of Artesia; two more daughters, Maria C. Marquez of Andrews and Toni Berryhill of Midland; one sister, Alejandra Reyes of Odessa; 30 grandchildren; 46 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
A brother, Lucas Valenzuela; and two sisters, Teodora Dominguez and Paulina Valenzuela, also preceded him in death.

Luis E. Sanchez
Mass of Christian Burial for Luis Enrique Sanchez of Lovington will be held at 9 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 20, at St. Thomas Catholic Church.
The Rev. Jose Reyes will officiate. Burial will follow in the Lovington Cemetery under the direction of Bethany Funeral Home. A rosary will be held at 7 p.m. on Sunday night at 514 S. Second St.
The infant died Thursday, Nov. 16. He was born Nov. 17, 1999, in Bakersfield, Calif..
Survivors include his father, Palemon Sanchez of Sta Catherine GTO, Mexico; his mother, Alejandra Arvizu of the home; a sister, Karina Sanchez of the home; maternal grandmother, Theodora Arvizu of Sta Catherine GTO; paternal grandparents, Palemon and Margarita Sanchez, both of Sta Catherine GTO; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

Alice M. Smith
EUNICE - Services for Alice Mildred Smith of Eunice will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 19, at Free Holiness Church in Eunice.
The Rev. Gerald Anderson will officiate. Burial will be held at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 21, in Rose Bank Cemetery in Mulberry, Kan., under the direction of Calvary Funeral Home.
Visitation will be held from 2-7 p.m. today at the funeral home and from 6-8 p.m. on Monday at Brenner Funeral Home in Pittsburg, Kan.
Mrs. Smith, 84, died Thursday, Nov., 16, in Eunice. She was born Aug. 17, 1916, in Hugoton, Kan. She married Charles Basil Smith on Aug. 31, 1940. He preceded her in death.
She was a member of Free Holiness Church in Eunice. She worked for Home Health Care, retiring in 1981.
Mrs. Smith moved to Eunice from Pittsburg in 1998.
Survivors include four sons, Bacil Smith of Skiatook, Okla., William Smith and Raymond Smith, both of Eunice, and Delbert Smith of Marion, Ohio; four daughters, Marilyn Cooley of Glenwood, Ark., Beverly Phillips and Bonnie Phillips, both of Pittsburg, and Janella Deer of Nevada, Texas; two sisters, Ruth Killingsworth of Liberal, Kan., and Ruby Dennis of Grove, Okla.; two brothers, Cecil Allen of Overland Park, Kan., and Bill Allen of Denver; 29 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.
Her parents; a daughter, Rowena Smith; and a brother, Kenneth Allen, also preceded her in death.

Randal M. Woody
LOVINGTON -- Services for former Lovington resident Randal Murray Woody of Midland will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 17, at Bethany Funeral Home Chapel.
The Rev. Odell Farr will officiate. Burial will follow in the Lovington Cemetery.
Mr. Woody, 58, died Tuesday, Nov. 14, at his home. He was born July 2, 1942, in Clovis.
He graduated from Lovington High School in 1960 and from Eastern New Mexico University in 1965, with a degree in elementary education.
He was baptized in Lovington at Third and Central Church of Christ. He worked for Dawson Geo Physical from 1969 to the present.
Survivors include his parents, Ben Blanche of Lovington two brothers, Chauncy Woody and Kelvin Woody, all of Lovington; two nieces; two nephews; two great-nieces; and three great-nephews.

Ronald "Bruce" Tate
Services are pending with Chapel of Hope Funeral Home for Ronald "Bruce" Tate of Hobbs.
Mr. Tate, 58, died Wednesday, Nov. 15, in Intercoastal City, La. He was born July 4, 1942, in Edna, Texas.
Survivors include his wife, Erie Tate of Hobbs; and a son, Ron Tate, also of Hobbs.

Betty L. Inman
TATUM -- Services for Betty Lou Inman of Tatum will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 16, at Assembly of God in Tatum.
Clarence Gutierrez and the Rev. Leon Green will officiate. Cremation will take place under the direction of Bethany Funeral Home.
Mrs. Inman, 64, died Tuesday, Nov. 14, in Lubbock. She was born June 29, 1936, in Florence, Texas. She married William James Inman on July 5, 1982, in Las Cruces.
She moved to Tatum in November 1977. She was a past president of the Tatum Lions Club and a member of First Assembly of God in Tatum.
Survivors include her husband of the home; three daughters, Jayme Hardin of Lovington, Jean Allen of Tatum and Shannon Sonnier of Denham Springs, La.; a son, Joe Rhoades of Kirtland,; two brothers, James "Bub" Maines and Joe Maines, both of Florence; a sister, Mary Moore of Huntsville, Texas; seven grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and numerous cousins.
Her parents, Joe and Tjeda Maines, preceded her in death.

Mary V. Holguin
Mass of Christian Burial for Mary V. Holguin of Hobbs will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 17, at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church in Artesia. The Rev. Vince Peterson will officiate. Burial will follow in Woodbine Cemetery in Artesia under the direction of Bethany Funeral Home.
A rosary will be held at 7 p.m. today at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church, with deacon Pablo Merjil conducting the service.
Mrs. Holguin, 57, died Tuesday, Nov. 14, in Lubbock. She was born Feb. 17, 1943, in Candelaria, Texas.
She had lived in Hobbs for the past 30 years, working as a caretaker in people's homes.
Survivors include a son, Jesse Armendariz of Artesia; a daughter, Roseann Arcidez of Midland; her mother, Refugia Villanueva of Artesia; two brothers, Tony Villanueva of Phoenix, and Manuel Villanueva of Pecos, Texas; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Her father, Manuel Villanueva; and a brother, Juan Villanueva, preceded her in death.

Billy J. 'Bill' Haviland

Services for Billy J. "Bill" Haviland of Hobbs will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 2, at Chapel of Hope Funeral Home.

The Rev. Gavin Vaughan and the Rev. Bruce Kirby will officiate. Burial will follow at Prairie Haven Memorial Park. Graveside rites will be conducted by Canon Air Force Base Honor Guard.

Visitation will be held from noon-8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Mr. Haviland, 71, died Wednes-day, Jan. 31, at Lea Regional Medical Center. He was born July 15, 1929, in Holdenville, Okla. He married Mary Jane Pate on May 10, 1956, in Monument.

He served in the U.S. Navy from 1949 to 1954 aboard the USS Essex.

Survivors include his wife of the home; two sons, Don Haviland of Midland and Jason Haviland of Gillette, Wyo.; two daughters, Gayla Ramey of Rifle, Colo., and Sheila LeMond of Clovis; two brothers, Kenneth Haviland and Ronnie Haviland, both of El Paso; a sister, Wanda Waner of Junc-tion City, Kan.; and three grandchildren.

His parents, Chriss and Lillie Haviland, preceded him in death.

Lilly 'Bonnie' Todd

ABILENE - Services for Lilly Yvonne "Bonnie" Cooper Todd of Abilene, sister of Evelyn Nolen of Monument, will be held Friday, Feb. 2, at Pioneer Drive Baptist Church under the direction of Elmwood Funeral Home.

The Rev. Pete Knight will officiate.

Mrs. Todd, 65, died Tuesday, Jan. 30, at Hendrick Medical Center. She was born May 11, 1935, in North Roby, Texas. She married William Todd on Dec. 12, 1959. He preceded her in death on Sept. 11, 1974.

She graduated from Roby High School and moved to Abilene in 1966.

Mrs. Todd retired from the Abilene Independent School District in May 1998 after 32 years of services. She was a member of Pioneer Drive Baptist Church.

Other survivors include three sons, Richard Blount of Odessa, Darrell Blount of Las Vegas, Nev., and Danny Blount of Columbus, Ohio; a daughter, Lisa McHan of Abilene; three brothers, Earl Cooper of Stamford, Texas, Gene Cooper of Crystal City, Mo., and Earnest Cooper of Fairfield, Calif.; two more sisters, Linnie Eitel of El Paso and Frances Sawyer of Andrews; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A son, William David Todd; two brothers, Carl Cooper and Chester Cooper; a sister, Ruby Carpenter; and her parents, Ollie and Lottice Cooper, also preceded her in death.

The family will receive visitors from 6-8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Marcie L. Washington

PORTLAND, Ore. - Memorial services for former Hobbs resident Marcie L. Washington will be held at 1 p.m. today in Portland. Burial took place at 10 a.m. today at Lincoln Memorial.

Mrs. Washington, 75, died Friday, Jan. 26, at a Portland hospital. She was born Feb. 5, 1925, in Texas.

She lived in Hobbs for a number of years before moving to Andrews. In 1965 she moved to Kansas City, Mo., and lived there until October 1999. She then relocated to Portland and lived there until her death.

Survivors include a son, Arthur Bryant; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and an aunt.

Daniel Snell

Services for Daniel Snell of Hobbs will be held at 2 p.m. CST on Saturday, Feb. 3, at Grace Baptist Church in Andrews.

Bishop LeeRoy Wilcox will officiate. Burial will follow in Andrews North Cemetery under the direction of Bethany Funeral Home. Visitation will be held from 8 a.m.-9 p.m. today and from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. on Thursday at the funeral home.

Visitation will be held from 9 a.m.-9 p.m. on Friday and from 9 a.m.-noon at McNett Funeral Home in Andrews.

The family will greet friends from 4-6 p.m. today.

Daniel, 14, died Saturday at Nor-Lea General Hospital in Lovington. He was born July 29, 1986, in Andrews.

He was a member of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He played football for Highland Junior High School.

Daniel loved all sports, especially baseball, roller blading and fishing. He also loved to help people in need.

Survivors include his parents, Robin and Peggy Snell; a sister, Lisa Marie Snell of the home; paternal grandparents, Jan and Jim Snell of Andrews; maternal grandmother, Opal Porter; stepgrandfather, Charley of Andrews; maternal grandfather, Albert Livesay; and stepgrandmother, Mary of Odessa.

A brother, Heath Snell and his great-grandparents preceded him in death.

Bess Phillips

Bess Phillips, long-time resident of Jal, died Monday in Broken Arrow, Okla.

She was born Ally Bessie West, in West Milford, W.V., on April 27, 1915. She married the boy next door, Garland Fletcher (Fizzer) Phillips, and the couple moved to Jal in 1939 with their two small children, Joan and Buddy.

She resided in Jal until 1994, having since been in a nursing home in a Tulsa suburb. She was 85, and was the last surviving member of a family of 11 children.

Mrs. Phillips was preceded in death by her husband in 1979, by her daughter Grace Joan (Phillips) Hill in 1980 and by her grandson Jimmy Wayne Hill in 1988.

She is survived by two sons, Buddy Phillips of Tulsa and Jerry Phillips of Clayton, two granddaughters and a grandson, along with three great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.

Graveside services will be held at the Winkler County Memorial Cemetery in Kermit, Texas, at 10 a.m. Central time on Friday under the direction of Cooper Funeral Home.

James E. 'Ed' Vandiver

Services for longtime Hobbs resident, former business owner and civic leader James Edwin "Ed" Vandiver, will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 2, at the First Baptist Church.

The Rev. Mark Goodman, Vandiver's grandson-in-law of Anchorage, Alaska, will officiate. Burial will follow in Prairie Haven Cemetery under the direction of Griffin Funeral Home.

Mr. Vandiver, 85, died Monday, Jan. 29, at his home. He was born June 6, 1915, in Lindsay, Okla. His wife, of 56 years, Syllrene Vandiver, preceded him in death.

He graduated from Lindsay (Okla.) High School in 1937, he moved to Hobbs and went to work for the G.F. Wacker Company and worked in a managerial capacity until he established Vandiver's Hardware in 1955.

While working for Wackers, he held store manager positions in Monahans, Texas, for his brother, Joe, when he was called into the service. He also served as store manager in Levelland, Texas.

In 1944, Vandiver was called into service during World War II. He was stationed at Fort Bliss in El Paso and Fort Hood in Killeen, Texas. During the service, he achieved the rank of sergeant major in the 104th Infantry Division. He was discharged on Dec. 7, 1945.

Following the war, he moved to Levelland for a short time. He was transferred back to Hobbs in 1946, where he continued to work for the Wacker stores, managing two stores.

In February 1955, after 20 years of service with Wackers, he bought out J.C. Head's Army Store. Two years later, he changed the name to Vandiver's Hardware. The store prospered and his successful business venture earned acclaim for him and his wife, not only in Hobbs, but in the surrounding area.

In June 1977, Vandiver retired to enjoy many years of hunting in Colorado, fishing in Mexico and his cabin in Lake City, Colo.

Mr. Vandiver enjoyed his many civic associations as well. He was a member of the Lions Club International and served as president of the Noon Day Lions Club. He attended state conventions for years and the Lions International Convention in 1957 in Miami, Fla.

In addition, he served on the Hobbs Board of Education for six years, where he handed diplomas to his three children. He also enjoyed membership in the Masonic Lodge.

Survivors include two daughters, Peggy Sue Hallbauer of Pearland, Texas, and Sherrie Ann Prague, Ph.D., of Irving, Texas; a son, Charles Edwin Vandiver, D.D.S. of Meeker, Colo.; a brother, Ralph Vandiver of Pauls Valley, Okla.; a sister, Nell Tatum of Littlefield; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; four nieces; a nephew; and other great-nieces and nephews.

His parents, Mae Cecil Vandiver and Alonzo "Lon" Vandiver; a sister, Sula Baker; and a brother, Joe Vandiver, also preceded him in death.

Visitation will be held from 4-6 p.m. on Thursday at the funeral home.
