Birdie V. Jurik
LOVINGTON - Graveside services for former Lovington resident Birdie V. Jurik of Colorado Springs, Colo., will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Aug. 6, at Resthaven Cemetery. Heath Ormord will officiate.
Services are under the direction of Smith-Rogers Funeral Home.
Mrs. Jurik, 90, died Wednesday, Aug. 1, in Colorado Springs. She was born Nov. 22, 1910, in Dallas. She married Milo Jurik on March 9, 1943, in Waxahachie, Texas. He preceded her in death.
Mrs. Jurik was a veteran of World War II, serving as a nurse. She was also a registered nurse after the war and a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Survivors include one daughter, Birdie Kawakami of Falcon, Colo.; one son, Milo Jurik of Anchorage, Alaska; seven grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Margaret R. Callis
Services for former Hobbs resident Margaret R. Callis of Highlands, Texas, will be held at 3 p.m. today at Chapel of Hope Chapel. The Rev. Gale Trow of First Baptist Church will officiate.
Burial will follow at Memory Gardens Cemetery.
Services are under the direction of Chapel of Hope Funeral Home.
Visitation will be held from 8 a.m.-3 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Mrs. Callis, 89, died Wednesday, Aug. 1, at San Jacinto Methodist Medical Center in Baytown, Texas. She was born Aug. 13, 1911, in Brownwood, Texas. She married Hubert Callis, who preceded her in death in 1977.
A member of the Rebekah Lodge, Mrs. Callis was employed with C.R. Anthonys as an alterations person and also did alterations for the community. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Hobbs.
Survivors include two daughters, Michelle Mackey of Highlands and Linda Pickett of Goleta, Calif.; one brother, R.W. Jackson of the Dominican Republic; and four grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by one sister, El Ray Berryhill; and one brother, Claude Jackson Jr.
Dessie F. Bilbrey
LOVINGTON - Services for Dessie Fay Bilbrey of Crossroads will be held at 1 p.m. (MST) today at First Baptist Church in Bledsoe, Texas. The Rev. Hollis Shoemake will officiate. Services are under the direction of Smith-Rogers Funeral Home of Lovington.
Burial will follow at Tatum Cemetery.
Mrs. Bilbrey, 90, died Sunday, July 30, at Nor-Lea General Hospital in Lovington. She was born Dec. 4, 1910, in Monument. She married Wayman Price "Pete" Bilbrey on Aug. 13, 1930, in Carlsbad.
Mrs. Bilbrey was an active member of First Baptist Church for many years, having served as a Sunday school teacher. She was also a 4-H Club leader.
Survivors include five sons, Bill Bilbrey of Burleson, Texas, Milton Bilbrey of Levelland, Texas, Kenneth Bilbrey of Morton, Texas, Marion Bilbrey of Crossroads and Johnny Bilbrey of Odessa; four daughters, Teresa Sooter of Seminole, Patsy Davis and Bessie Denny, both of Bledsoe, Texas, and Eva Sooter of Tatum; one brother, Lonzo Dickison of Maude, Texas; one sister, Ada Martin of Levelland; 22 grandchildren; 41 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Bilbrey was preceded in death by her husband in 1998; two brothers, Guinn Dickison and Wylie Dickison; three sisters, Jessie London, Dorothy Steadham and Frankie Hollis; and four infant brothers and sisters.
James "Carl" Lindley
CARLSBAD - Graveside services for James "Carl" Lindley of Carlsbad will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 4, at Carlsbad Cemetery. Michael Joiner of Sunset Church of Christ will officiate.
Services are under the direction of Denton-Funchess Funeral Home.
The Carlsbad Veterans Honor Guard will perform military honors and the Benevolent Protective Order of Elks No. 1558 will perform rites.
He will lie in state from 10 a.m.-9 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Mr. Lindley, 73, died Wednesday, Aug. 1, at Covenant Medical Center in Lubbock. He was born Sept. 13, 1927, to Clyde Escar Lindley and Carrie Ellen Hall Lindley in Panhandle, Texas. He grew up in Carlsbad, graduating from Carlsbad High School in 1945. In 1945, he was inducted in the U.S. Army and discharged in 1946.
He moved to Taft, Calif., where he worked for Standard Oil of California until 1951. In 1950, he married his first wife, Betty Lou Grice. In 1951, he returned to Carlsbad and started an Electrical Apprentice Program while working construction at New Duval Potash Mine.
The Korean Conflict caused him to be reclassified to 1-A. For two years he was assigned to Biggs AFB, El Paso, when he was transferred to Osan, Korea, for 13 months. When his tour was up in Korea he was sent to Eglin AFB, Fort Walton Beach, Fla., for eight years.
During this time he was advanced in rank to Tech Sergeant. He was then transferred to Tachikawa AFB, Japan, where he earned many letters of commendation as well as the Medal of Commendation.
In 1965, he left Japan and was assigned to Vandenburg AFB, Lompoc, Calif. He was the first USAF enlisted man allowed to operate the re-entry vehicle facility, balancing satellites sent into space.
He was then sent to Da Nang, Vietnam, for 13 months. Upon his return to the U.S. he was assigned to Randolph AFB, San Antonio.
In 1971 he went to work for Electric Service and Supply in Odessa.
In January 1973, he took a job in Hobbs as an electric motor rewind foreman, holding this position for 17 years. In 1989, at the age of 62, he retired from Dixie Electric in Hobbs and moved to Lake Brownwood, Texas.
In 1994, he moved to Carlsbad, where his first wife preceded him in death on June 12, 1995. In November 1996, he married his second wife, also named Betty. He was a member of the Benevolent Protective Order of Elks No. 1558.
Survivors include his wife, Betty Lindley of Carlsbad; two sons, James Paul Lindley of Hobbs and John R. Gentry of Carlsbad; three daughters, Gina Kay Bryant of Hobbs, Vickie E. Collis of Carlsbad and Cindi E. Becker of Houston; 11 grandchildren; extended family of Odessa and Dallas; and many friends.
Gregory D. Sikes
ODESSA - Services for Gregory Dillon Sikes of Odessa will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 4, at Sunset Memorial Chapel. Laura Deaderick will officiate.
Services are under the direction of Sunset Memorial Funeral Home.
Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
The infant died Wednesday, Aug. 1, at Odessa Regional Hospital. He was born July 31.
Survivors include his parents, Brent and Rebecca Sikes; his maternal grandparents, Marvin and Debbie Wein; and his paternal grandparents, Clay and Terry Sikes.
Larry Ruffner
Services for Larry Ruffner of Hobbs will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 4, at First Christian Church of Hobbs. The Rev. Jerry Jenkins will officiate.
Cremation will take place at a later time.
Services are under the direction of Griffin Funeral Home.
Mr. Ruffner, 56, died Thursday, Aug. 2, at his home. He was born Sept. 30, 1944, in Lubbock.
Mr. Ruffner served 20 years with the Hobbs Police Department.
Survivors include one son, Paul Ruffner of Oklahoma; three daughters, Balynnda Dillard of Wichita Falls, Texas, and Michelle Ruffner and Megan Ruffner, both of Hobbs; two brothers, Kenny Ruffner of Hobbs and Jerry Ruffner of Midland; one sister, Connie Scroggins of Oklahoma; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

A.D. "Curley" Haley Jr.
ANDREWS - Services for A.D. "Curley" Haley Jr. of Andrews will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 3, at First Baptist Church. The Rev. H.A. Hanks of First Baptist Church will officiate.
Services are under the direction of McNett Funeral Home of Andrews.
Burial will follow at Andrews North Cemetery.
Mr. Haley, 73, died Tuesday, July 31, in Permian General Hospital. He was born Jan. 31, 1928, in Yoakum County, Texas. He married Geneva Hitch on Sept. 4, 1948, in Andrews.
Mr. Haley had served in the U.S. Navy and retired from Exxon as a field foreman. He was a member of First Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife of Andrews; two sons, Ronald Haley of Lewisville, Texas, and David Haley of Edinburg, Texas; one brother, Johnny B. Haley of Eunice; four sisters, Nell J. Rice and Helen M. Starks, both of Hobbs, Frances Smith of Burnet, Texas, and Patsy A. James of Seagraves, Texas; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Mr. Haley was preceded in death by one brother, Loyd Haley, in July 1999.
Margaret R. Callis
Services are pending with Chapel of Hope Funeral Home for former Hobbs resident Margaret R. Callis of Highlands, Texas.
Mrs. Callis, 89, died Wednesday, Aug. 1, at San Jacinto Methodist Medical Center in Baytown, Texas. She was born Aug. 13, 1911, in Brownwood, Texas.

D.W. "Poke" Bowden
FORT WORTH - A private memorial service for D.W. "Poke" Bowden of Fort Worth will be held at a later date.
Mr. Bowden, 68, died Friday, July 20, in Fort Worth. He was born Nov. 15, 1932, in Brownfield.
Mr. Bowden grew up in Eunice. He later moved from Odessa to Lafayette, La., where he retired as a fishing tool operator.
Survivors include one daughter, Nancy Kay Bowden; two sons, Tony Bowden and Tim Bowden; and one sister, Essie Bowden.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Judge Faugh Bowden and Tennie Bowden; and one son, Allen Keith Bowden.
John M. Trout
TECUMSEH, Okla. - Services for John Melson Trout of Hobbs will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Aug. 3, at Cooper Funeral Home in Tecumseh, Okla. Burial will follow at Brown Cemetery in Tecumseh.
Mr. Trout, 68, died Monday, July 30, in Lubbock. He was born July 28, 1933, in Cade, Okla.
He married Thelma Ann Tison on Oct. 29, 1965, in Hobbs.
Survivors include his wife of the home; three sons, Jason Trout of Azle, Texas, Jonathon Trout of Hobbs and Charlie Trout of Memphis, Tenn.; one daughter, Sheila Copley of Hobbs; four sisters; two brothers; five grandsons; six granddaughters; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Loise and W.E. "Buck" Trout; and one brother, Billy Trout of Houston.
William A. Stevenson
Graveside services for William A. "Steve" Stevenson of Hobbs, formerly of Odessa, will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 2, at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Odessa.
Mr. Stevenson, 88, died Monday, July 30, in Hobbs. He was born Nov. 19, 1912, in Bridgeport, Texas. He married Bobbie Stevenson on Sept. 4, 1959, in Midland. She preceded him in death in 1992.
Mr. Stevenson had been employed with Santa Fe Drilling for several years. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
He lived in Odessa for many years before moving to Hobbs to live with his daughter.
Survivors include one son, Steven Stevenson of Odessa; and one daughter, Laurie Tubbs of Hobbs.

Chance L. Scheller
Graveside services for Chance L. Scheller will be held at 10 a.m. today at Prairie Haven Cemetery. The Rev. Daniel Miller will officiate.
Services are under the direction of Bethany Funeral Home of Hobbs.
The infant died Sunday, July 29, at Covenant Medical Center in Lubbock. He was born Saturday, July 28, at Lea Regional Medical Center.
Survivors include his parents, Kelly and Michelle Scheller; one brother, Dakota of the home; maternal grandparents, Denise Layton of Hobbs and Larry Ruffner of Hobbs; paternal grandparents, Linda Dunn of Hobbs and Ernest Scheller of Hobbs; maternal great-grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. David Matkins of Hobbs; and paternal great-grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Elvis Beasley of Antlers, Okla.
