William A. Stevenson
Services for William A. "Steve" Stevenson of Hobbs, formerly of Odessa, are pending with Griffin Funeral Home.
Mr. Stevenson, 88, died Monday, July 30, in Hobbs. He was born Nov. 19, 1912, in Bridgeport, Texas.
Survivors include one daughter, Laurie Tubbs of Hobbs; and one son, Steven Stevenson of Odessa.
J.R. "Red" Smith
No services are scheduled for J.R. "Red" Smith of Hobbs. Arrangements are under Griffin Funeral Home.
His body has been donated to science at the University of New Mexico.
Mr. Smith, 71, died Sunday, July 29, at his home. He was born April 5, 1930, in Tahlequah, Okla. He married Evelyn Merriman Smith in 1955 in Carlsbad.
Mr. Smith worked as a motorman in the oilfield.
Survivors include his wife of the home; two sons, Joseph Smith of Fayetteville, N.C., and Bill Smith of El Paso; and three grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one son, Derrick Smith.
Leo Lawson
BIG SPRING, Texas - Services for Leo Lawson of Albuquerque will be held at 4 p.m. today at the Nalley-Pickle & Welch Rosewood Chapel. The Rev. Claude Craven will officiate.
Burial will follow at Trinity Memorial Park.
Mr. Lawson, 88, died Wednesday, July 25, at his home. He was born Jan. 5, 1913, in Stephenville, Texas. He married Laura Gene Hinson on May 22, 1937, in Big Spring.
Mr. Lawson grew up in Ackerly and lived in Big Spring for a short time after they married. He worked for Exxon Oil Co., retiring in 1978 after more than 32 years of service.
Mr. Lawson was a member of Hoffmantown Baptist Church. He was ordained a deacon in the First Baptist Church in Big Lake, Texas, in 1954 and has served for 47 years in different churches.
Survivors include his wife of 64 years; one daughter, Shirley Isler; and two granddaughters.
He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers; and one sister.
Memorials may be sent to the First Baptist Church of Hobbs Mission Fund; the Presbyterian Hospice of Albuquerque; or the American Cancer Society, in care of Lucy Bonner, P.O. Box 2121, Big Spring, Texas 79721-2121.
Inez A. Sosa
LOVINGTON - Services for Inez A. "NeNe" Sosa of Lovington will be held at 7 p.m. today at Bethany Funeral Home Chapel. Arthur Sanchez will officiate.
Cremation will follow.
Military honors will be presented by the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars honor guard.
Mr. Sosa, 70, died Thursday, July 26, at his home. He was born Sept. 12, 1930, to Stanley and Lena Sosa in Carlsbad. He married Leonor Doporto on Sept. 16, 1953, in Carlsbad.
Mr. Sosa had served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War as the driver of an amphibious tank. After he spent three years in the Army, Inez went into the National Guard, where he served as sergeant. He had been employed as a roustabout for many years and was faithful to the Catholic Church.
Survivors include his wife of the home; three sons, Eddy Sosa and Jerry Sosa, both of Lovington, and Inez Sosa Jr. of Dallas; seven daughters, Christina Gomez, Faye Lopez, Barbara Lopez, Lisa Ontiveros, Donna Sosa, Julie Aranda and Angie Montoya, all of Lovington; one sister, Anita Hernandez of Windsor, Calif.; 22 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers.
Eunice I. Plummer
ELK CITY, Okla. - Services for Eunice Irene Plummer of Elk City will be held at 10 a.m. today at Whinery-Savage Chapel. Michael Larson will officiate. Services are under the direction of Whinery-Savage Funeral Service.
Burial will follow at Berlin Cemetery.
Ms. Plummer, 80, died Thursday, July 26, at Great Plains Regional Medical Center in Elk City. She was born Aug. 8, 1920, in Berlin, Okla., to Violet and David Richard Lay. She married Charles Plummer Jr. on Dec. 25, 1937, in Cheyenne, Okla.
Mrs. Plummer grew up in the Berlin community and attended Berlin School. She and her husband made their home in Berlin. In 1960, she moved to Elk City. She worked at the Townhouse Restaurant and Flamingo Restaurant for several years and later worked as a sales clerk before retiring.
Mrs. Plummer enjoyed traveling around the country, especially with her children and grandchildren. She was a member of Fairview Baptist Church.
Survivors include three daughters, Joy Dorman and Carol Haley, both of Sayre, Okla., and Darlene Woods of Hobbs; one son, Monte Plummer of Anadarko, Okla.; one sister, Johnnie Stephens of Elk City; one brother, Curtis Lay of Melrose; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a host of relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Elisha Lay; and two grandsons.
James C. Hyland
TATUM - Graveside services for James Clinton Hyland of Tatum will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, July 31, at the Santa Fe National Cemetery. The Rev. Larry Haslam will officiate. Services are under the direction of Bethany Funeral Home.
Mr. Hyland, 59, died Saturday, July 21, at his home. He was born Dec. 18, 1941, in Tacoma, Wash., to Wayne and Louise Hyland. He married Laurie Ashford on Dec. 8, 1978, at the submarine base in San Diego.
Mr. Hyland was an E6 in the U.S. Navy and received the Vietnam Service Medal with two Bronze Stars, and an armed forces Expeditionary Medal Korea. He served during the Vietnam War on the U.S.S. George Washington as a sonar operator before retiring.
Survivors include his wife of the home; one daughter, Judy Hyland of San Diego; one son, Patrick Hyland of Tatum; two sisters, Linda Hyland and Judy Grihalua, both of Los Angeles; one brother, Dick Hyland of Westminster, Colo.; and one grandson.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Curtis H. Cotton Jr.
Graveside services for Curtis H. Cotton Jr. of Hobbs will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, July 27, at Childress Cemetery in Childress, Texas. The Rev. Tommy Sims of Trinity Fellowship will officiate. Services are under the direction of Griffin Funeral Home.
Mr. Cotton, 74, died Wednesday, July 25, in Hobbs. He was born Jan. 28, 1927, in Wichita Falls, Texas. He married Nadine King Cotton on Dec. 10, 1944, in Childress.
Mr. Cotton was an employee of the Hobbs News-Sun for 35 years. He enjoyed the stock market and playing golf.
Survivors include his wife of the home; two sons, Gary Cotton and Mark Cotton, both of Hobbs; two daughters, Judy Merrell of Hobbs and Vicki Little of Austin; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Ruth Saloga McDaniel
GARDEN CITY, Kan. - Graveside services for Ruth Saloga McDaniel will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, July 27, at Memorial Park Cemetery in Hutchinson, Kan. The Rev. Harold Wilcox will officiate. Services are under the direction of Price & Sons Funeral Home of Garden City.
Mrs. Saloga McDaniel, 92, died Tuesday, July 24, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City. She was born April 10, 1909, in Middleton, Ohio, to John James and Edna Koble Anderson. She married Emil Saloga on May 18, 1927, in Hutchinson, Kan. He preceded her in death in 1962. In 1972, she married Ross McDaniel in Alva, Okla. He preceded her in death in 1982.
Mrs. Saloga McDaniel had been a resident of Garden City since 1993. She moved there from Pratt, Kan., where she had worked as a cook for the Pratt School District.
She was a member of the Methodist faith. She was a past member of the Women's Bowling Association and the Senior Citizens Center, both of Pratt. She also belonged to the Finney County Senior Center.
Survivors include six sons, Gilbert of Hobbs, Darrell of Payson, Ariz., Eugene of Garden City, Marvin of Roosevelt, Utah, LeLand of Odessa and Lawrence of Pratt; 26 grandchildren; 55 great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers; four sisters; one granddaughter; and one great-grandson.

Mae Grant
MARSHALL, Ill. - Services for Mae Grant of Marshall will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 28, at the Pearce Funeral Home in Marshall. The Rev. John Davis will officiate.
Mrs. Grant, 90, died Monday, July 23, at the Burnsides Nursing Home in Marshall. She was born Sept. 5, 1910, in Marshall to Harry Christopher Lichtenberger and Lucinda Landreth Lichtenberger. She married Roger Reid Grant on Oct. 23, 1943, in Oxford, Ohio.
She worked for the Marathon/Ohio Oil Company and Western Union, and then enlisted in the U.S. Navy WAVES in 1943. She and her husband were both stationed in Florida, he in Tampa with the Army Air Corps and she in Jacksonville.
After the war, the Grants moved to Marshall, then Bucyrus and Columbus, Ohio, and Hobbs. In 1977, she moved to Bremerton, Wash., and returned to Marshall in 1989.
Survivors include two daughters, Sally Carpenter of Marshall and Judy Forsman of Conroe, Texas; one sister, Helen L. Broussard; five grandchildren; and three great-granddaughters.
Mrs. Grant was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; and two sisters, Selma L. George and Joy L. Miller.

Jean K. Berryman
Services for Jean K. Berryman of Hobbs will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 25, at Chapel of Hope Funeral Home.
Richard Rubinstein will officiate.
Burial will follow at Prairie Haven Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 8 a.m.-8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Mrs. Berryman, 80, was born Aug. 8, 1920, in Stonewall County, Texas. She married George A. Berryman in June 1967 in Seminole. He preceded her in death in November 1982.
Mrs. Berryman was a member of the VFW Women's Auxiliary and Women of the Moose Lodge No. 2084. She worked at the shipyards in Tacoma, Wash., during World War II.
Survivors include two sons, Dwayne Mings of Deming and Michael Mings of Hobbs; five daughters, Carol Lester and Linda Ragland, both of Eunice, Elaine Mings of Delores, Colo., Sharon Rubenstein of Galt, Calif., and Anita Norris of Midland; three stepstons, Russell Berryman, David Berryman and George Berryman Jr., all of Hobbs; three brothers, W.A. Kluting of the Dalles, Ore., Lester Kluting of Las Cruces, and Terrell Kluting of Tularosa; one sister, Becky Phillips of Holdenville, Okla.; 18 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was also preceded in death by her parents, Chester and Mattie Kluting; her first husband, Monroe Mings; three brothers, Kenneth Kluting, Durward Kluting and R.D. Kluting; and two sisters, Iona Rose Kluting and Lou Ann Kluting.
Robert Uyeno
Services for Robert Uyeno of Lovington will be held at 2 p.m. today at Bethany Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Thurman "Slick" Duncan officiating.
Cremation will follow.
Mr. Uyeno, 83, died Friday, July 20, at Nor-Lea General Hospital. He was born Jan. 7, 1918, in Rocky Ford, Colo., to Isajiro and Yai Uyeno. He married Mary Shizuko FuruKami on Feb. 1, 1948, in Denver. He was a member of COOTIE and co-owned and operated Uyeno Brothers Farms for many years.
Survivors include his wife of the home; a son, Gary Uyeno of Long Beach, Calif.; and a daughter, Sharon Uyeno of Phoenix.
Jerry Hann
LUBBOCK - Services for Jerry Hann of Lubbock will be 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 25, at Franklin Bartley Chapel with the Rev. E.R. Holder officiating. Burial will follow in the Peaceful Gardens Memorial Park under the direction of Franklin Bartley Funeral Home.
Visitation is from 6-8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Mr. Hann, 61, died Sunday, July 22, at Covenant Medical Center in Lubbock. He was born Jan. 13, 1940, in Olney, Texas. He graduated from Hobbs High School in 1958.
Mr. Hann was a resident of Hobbs from 1953 until he moved to Lubbock this year. He served in the United States Army and was stationed in Korea. He retired from the Hobbs Fire Department after 30 years of service. He was a member of several Hobbs organizations and Belvue Baptist Church.
He is survived by a son, Mark E. Hann of Lubbock; a daughter, Vicki Myers of Colorado Springs, Colo.; three sisters, Malva Holder of Lamesa, Texas, Marie Wainscott of Weatherford, Texas, and Veta Brady of Sundown, Texas; a brother, Harley Hann of Seal Beach, Calif.; and four grandchildren.
