Seth Baker Jr.
Graveside services for Seth Baker Jr. of Odessa are scheduled for 1 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 7, at Prairie Haven Cemetery in Hobbs.
Mr. Baker died Friday, Nov. 3, in Odessa. He was 96.
He was born May 14, 1904, in Carter, Okla., and married Oma Irene Cline on Sept. 4, 1921, in Oklahoma.
He worked as a cotton ginner until his retirement.
Mr. Baker is survived by one son, Jerry Baker of Andrews; four daughters, Modell Willis of Midland, Wanda Lewis of Utopia, Texas, Nell Smith of Bristol, Tenn., and Barbara Blissingame of Vega, Texas.
He was preceded in death by his wife; two sons, Alvin and B.G. Baker; and one daughter, Peggy Sue Baker.
McNett Funeral Home in Andrews is in charge of arrangements.

Janie G. Duckett
Services for Janie Galloway Duckett of Hobbs will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 4, at St. John's Baptist Church.
The Rev. J.J. Joiner will officiate. Burial will follow in Prairie Haven Memorial Park under the direction of Griffin Funeral Home. She will lie in state today beginning at 11 a.m.
Mrs. Duckett, 88, died Wednesday, Nov. 1, at Lea Regional Medical Center. She was born Sept. 13, 1912, in Idabell, Okla. She married James Thomas Duckett, who preceded her in death.
She was a member of St. John's Baptist Church, where she was an active participant, serving as superintendent of the Sunday school and a member of the Senior Mission. She moved to Hobbs in 1988 from Littlefield, Texas.
Mrs. Duckett was a homemaker.
Survivors include a brother, Willie M. Williams of Portsmouth, Va.; a sister, Lucy M. Galloway of Fort Worth, Texas; and a grandchild.
Her parents, Bill and Emily Galloway; a brother, Elmer Galloway; a daughter, Charlene Foster; and a foster son, Curtis Proby, also preceded her in death.

Refugia 'Cuca' Lopez
LOVINGTON - Services for Refugia "Cuca" Lopez of Lovington will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 6, at Smith-Rogers Funeral Home Chapel
The Rev. Franklin Eichhorst will officiate. Cremation has taken place.
Mrs. Lopez, 61, died Wednesday, Nov. 1, at Covenant Medical Center in Lubbock. She was born July 4, 1939, in Monahans, Texas. She married Chon Lopez on Aug. 15, 1979.
She was a member of St. Thomas Catholic Church. She worked for the Lea County Detention Center.
Survivors include her husband of the home; a son, Paul Corrales, both of Lovington; two daughters, Ida Baca and Rebecca Corrales of Lovington; two brothers, Jesse Ontiberoz of Odessa, Texas, and Paul Nuņez of Hobbs; two sisters, Caya Garcia of Farmington and Mona Hennington of Lovington; and eight grandchildren.

Fred L. Young
EUNICE - Services for Fred Lawrence Young of Eunice will be held at 2 p.m. today at First Baptist Church.
The Rev. Keeney Dickenson will officiate. Burial will follow in the Brunson Memorial Cemetery under the direction of Calvary Funeral Home.
Mr. Young, 77, died Tuesday, Oct. 31, in Andrews, Texas. He was born Aug. 29, 1923, in Millsap, Texas. He married Evelyn Quarles on Sept. 25, 1944, in Lovington. She preceded him in death.
He served in the U.S. Army from May to November 1943 at Camp Walters in Mineral Wells, Texas. He had lived in Eunice since 1951. He worked for Texaco as a pumper for 35 year, retiring in 1985.
Mr. Young was a lifetime member of the Eunice Volunteer Fire Department and was the oldest known volunteer firefighter in the state, volunteering since 1953.
Survivors include a son, David Young of Cloudcroft; two daughters, Juanice (Kelly) Lyles of Hobbs and Leeta Kay Loveless of Lubbock, Texas; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
His parents; a brother; and three sisters also preceded him in death.

Janie G. Duckett
Services are pending with Griffin Funeral Home for Janie G. Duckett of Hobbs.
Mrs. Duckett, 88, died Wednesday, Nov. 1, at Lea Regional Medical Center. She was born Sept. 13, 1912, in Idabell, Okla.
Survivors include a brother, William W. Williams of Portsmouth, Va.; and a sister, Lucy M. Galloway of Fort Worth.

Fred L. Young
EUNICE - Services are pending with Calvary Funeral Home for Fred Lawrence Young of Eunice.
Mr. Young, 77, died Tuesday, Oct. 31, in Andrews, Texas. He was born Aug. 29, 1923, in Millsap, Texas.
Survivors include a son, David Young of Cloudcroft; two daughters, Juanice Lyles of Hobbs and Leeta Loveless of Lubbock; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Mary J. Cherryhomes
EUNICE - Private services for Mary Joyce Cherryhomes of Eunice will be held at a later date under the direction of Memory Gardens Direct Services.
Mrs. Cherryhomes, 69, died Tuesday, Oct. 31, at her home. She was born June 10, 1931, in Baytown, Texas. She married Jerry Cherryhomes on Nov. 5, 1949.
A resident of Eunice for 65 years, she attended Eunice Schools from 1937 to 1949. She graduated from Eunice High School in 1965 and worked for Dennis Hardware with her parents.
She was a Christian.
Survivors include her husband of the home; two sons, Gilbert Cherryhomes and Bruce Cherryhomes, both of Eunice; her mother, Daisy Dennis of Lubbock; a brother, Lawrence Dennis of Eunice; one granddaughter; and two great-granddaughters.
Her father, Raymond Dennis, preceded her in death on June 28, 1978.

Alberto 'Chito' Urias Sr.
Rosary for Alberto "Chito" Urias Sr. will be held at 5 p.m. today at St. Helena Catholic Church. The Rev. Jose Reyes will officiate.
Burial will follow in Ojinaga, Chih., Mexico.
Mr. Urias, 50, died Saturday, Oct. 28, at Lea Regional Medical Center.He was born July 9, 1950, in Mexico, and married Rita Melendez on Feb. 15, 1973, in Mexico.
He was a member of St. Helena Catholic Church.
Mr. Urias was a well-known musician in Hobbs and was a member of Los Jilgueros del Arroyo band for more than 20 years. He had played with the Los Toreros de Alberto Urias for 1-1/2 years.
Mr. Urias played his music all over the U.S. and Mexico. His bands have recorded numerous CDs and albums.
His music is played over the airwaves, and he played in many clubs in the surrounding area.
Survivors include his wife of the home; his mother, Josephina Urias of Hobbs; a son, Alberto Urias Jr. of Hobbs; two daughters, Irasema Grado and Aracelia Mendoza, both of Hobbs; nine brothers, Salomon Urias, Jose Urias, Salvador Urias, Humberto Urias and Manuel Urias, all of Mexico; Leopoldo Urias, Israel Urias, Jesus Urias and Raul Urias, all of Hobbs; and one grandchild.
His father, Eliezer Urias; and a sister,Crecencia Urias, preceded him in death.
Griffin Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Cal Trice

CLOVIS -- Services for Cal Trice of Clovis, brother of Ralph Trice, Murrell Cooper and Kathryn Rodriquez, all of Hobbs, and Donald R. Trice of Jal, will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 1, at Parkland Baptist Church.

The Rev. Doug Brooks and Rick Trice will officiate. Burial will follow in Lawn Haven Memorial Gardens in Clovis under the direction of Steed-Todd Funeral Home of Clovis.

Mr. Trice, 72, died Saturday, Oct. 28, at Plains Regional Medical Center in Clovis. He was born Feb. 5, 1928, in Pampa, Texas. He married Betty Jo Owens 51 years ago in Clovis.

He was superintendent of Clovis Schools, retiring in 1986, following 32 years of service and positions at all levels of education in New Mexico, including being a teacher and administrator in the Hobbs Schools, superintendent of Jal Schools and as specialist with the State Department of Education in Santa Fe. He also held administrative positions with the Department of Defense Dependents' Schools in Germany from 1962 to 1968 and served as executive director of economic development in Clovis from 1986 to 1988.

Mr. Trice graduated from Denver City, Texas, high school. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps from 1946 to 1949, held a bachelor of science degree from Hardin-Simmons University and a master's degree from Eastern New Mexico University.

He was a member of Parkland Baptist Church in Clovis, past president of the Clovis Rotary Club, past president of the Clovis Chamber of Commerce and a member of Phi Kappa Phi Academic Honor Society. He was elected to the New Mexico Education Hall of Fame in 1986.

Other survivors include his wife of the home; two sons, Richard C. Trice of Raton and Jeffrey D. Trice of Fort Worth, Texas; a daughter, Cheryl K. Willis of Muleshoe, Texas; another sister, Barbara Wilder of Denver City; six grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, Parkland Baptist Church of the Baptist Children's Home.

J.M. Zachary

FORT WORTH, Texas -- Services for former Hobbsan J.M. "Mack" Zachary of Fort Worth will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 2, in Greenwood Funeral Chapel. Burial will follow in Greenwood Mausoleum.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 1, at the funeral home.

Mr. Zachary, 96, died Sunday, Oct. 29, in Fort Worth. He was born Jan. 15, 1904, in Stephens County, Okla. He married Lola Hall on July 25, 1929, in Ponca City, Okla.

He graduated from Wagoner, Okla., High School and Hills Business College in Oklahoma City, Okla.

He worked for Marland Oil Co., now known as Conoco. In 1928, he and a friend, Neville G. Penrose, formed Westhyde Investment Co., an oil and gas royalty company. He moved to Fort Worth in 1929 and in 1934, he and Penrose formed Neville G. Penrose Inc., where he served as secretary and vice president until 1956, when he became president. The company was liquidated in 1962. During this period, he and Penrose formed the Penrose Production Co., where he served as president until its dissolution following Penrose's death. He later formed his own company, Zachary Oil Operating Co. and remained active in the oil business until his death.

Mr. Zachary was a member of University Christian Church, the Fort Worth Club and a charter member of Colonial Country Club, where he was a former member of the board of governors. He helped organize High Frontier, a school for underprivileged and handicapped children, located near Alpine and Fort Davis. He donated seed money for a literacy project in Chapala, Jalisco, Mexico. A children's emergency shelter in Burleson for homeless and abused children named its wilderness camp in his honor.

Survivors include his wife of the home; four grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

His daughter, Betty Zachary Slaughter, preceded him in death.

Wilbur "Red" Sherrell

Services for Wilbur "Red" Sherrell of Hobbs will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 1, at Griffin Funeral Home Chapel.

Mark Robinson will officiate. Burial will follow in Prairie Haven Memorial Park with the Hobbs Veterans Honor Guard performing.

He will lie in state at the funeral home today from 11 a.m. until 8 p.m.; and on Wednesday from 8 a.m. until service time.

Mr. Sherrell, 71, died Sunday, Oct. 29, at Lea Regional Medical Center. He was born March 15, 1929, in Ada, Okla. He married Lena Coslett in 1964 in Alamogordo.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army.

Mr. Sherrell was a member of the American Legion for 32 years, a Shriner and a member of the Roswell Masonic Lodge No. 18 for 49 years.

He was self-employed.

Survivors include his wife of the home; two sons, Ackey Martinez of Artesia and Barney Sherrell of Redding, Calif.; two daughters, Monica Cervantes of Hobbs and Linda Hinrichs of Redding; a sister, Marideth Watkins of Roswell; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

His parents; and two brothers, William Luther and Floyd Sherrell, preceded him in death.

Vela Mansur

Graveside services for Vela Mansur of Hobbs will be held at 10 a.m. today at Prairie Haven Cemetery under the direction of Griffin Funeral Home.

The Rev. Gorton Smith will officiate.

Mrs. Mansur, 90, died Saturday, Oct. 28, at Hobbs Healthcare Center. She was born Nov. 13, 1909, in Montague County, Texas. She married M.A. "Bus" Mansur who preceded her in death in 1983.

She moved to Hobbs in 1946 and had been a member of First United Methodist Church (FUMC) since that time. She was active in the First United Methodist Women, the building committee. She was a member of Beta Sigma Phi, the Grandmother's Club and the Rose Club. She was also active in FUMC youth fellowship.

Survivors include a son, Jerry E. Mansur of Denver City, Texas; a sister, Kittie Griggs of Dallas, Texas; two grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to FUMC Building Fund, 200 E. Snyder, Hobbs, N.M. 88240.

Margaret C. Miller

EL DORADO, Kan. -- Services for Margaret Christine Miller of El Dorado, mother of Jean Armstrong of Hobbs, will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 2, at Carlson Funeral Home in El Dorado. Graveside services and burial will be held on Friday, Nov. 3, at Friendship Cemetery in Springdale, Ark.

Mrs. Miller, 95, died Sunday, Oct. 29, at Lake Point Nursing Center in El Dorado. She was born May 15, 1905, in Elmo Springs, Ark. She married Riley A. Miller on Dec. 27, 1923. He preceded her in death in November, 1971.

She moved to El Dorado in 1977 from Independence, Kan. She was a member of First Baptist Church where she was a member of the Sunday school class.

Other survivors include another daughter, Betty Mason of El Dorado; six grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; and a niece.

Her parents, William Dinwood and Jo Ellen (Ritter) Pearson; a grandson; and three brothers also preceded her in death.

Elsie M. Thornley

Services for Elsie M. Thornley of Hobbs will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 1, at Prairie Haven Chapel.

The Rev. Jack Lott will officiate. Burial will follow in Prairie Haven Memorial Park.

Visitation will be held from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Mrs. Thornley, 84, died Saturday, Oct. 28, at Lea Regional Medical Center. She was born March 12, 1916, in Perry, Iowa.

She moved to Hobbs in 1952, from Perry. She worked for G.F. Wackers and Winns Variety Store as an assistant manager and the contract station post office clerk for 29 years, retiring in 1981.

Survivors include a brother, Harry Thornley of Hobbs; several nieces and nephews; great nieces and nephews; and great-great nieces and nephews.

Her parents, Gilbert and Lena Thornley; and a brother, Donald Thornley, preceded her in death.
