Jerral E. Bertram

MONUMENT, Colo. - Memorial services for former Hobbs resident, Jerral Edward Bertram of Monument and son of Tom and Montez Bertram of Hobbs, were held Saturday, March 17, at the First United Methodist Church in Arlington. Another memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, March 22, at the First United Methodist Church in Colorado Springs, Colo.

Mr. Bertram, 59, died Thursday, March 15, in Flower Mound, Texas, following a brief illness. He was born Oct. 21, 1941, in Lamesa, Texas. He married Donna Dewey on June 4, 1966, in Appleton, Wis.

He graduated from Hobbs High School and from the University of Houston with a degree in mechanical engineering.

He served in the U.S. Army.

Mr. Bertram was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Colorado Springs, Colo. He worked for Allis Chalmers and Perkins Engines. He retired from Detroit Diesel as a sales manager after 32 years of service.

Other survivors include his wife of the home; two daughters, Dena Duren and Denise White, both of Flower Mound; three sisters, Carol McGuire of Waco, Texas, Elaine Pierce of Oklahoma City, Okla., and Beverly Dyer of Midland; his father and mother-in-law; a sister-in-law; three grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Bertram Memorial Fund, c/o First United Methodist church, 420 N. Nevada, Colorado Springs, Colo., 80903.

Johnny B. Puckett Sr.

ARTESIA - Graveside services for Johnny B. Puckett Sr. of Artesia, father of Johnny Puckett Jr. and Annella Compary, both of Hobbs, were held on Saturday, March 17, at Twin Oaks Memorial Park under the direction of Terpening and Son Mortuary Inc.

Peggy White officiated.

Mr. Puckett, 70, died Friday, March 16, in Hobbs. He was born Feb. 18, 1931, in Pledger, Texas. He married Gloria Ann Dabelgott on Feb. 25, 1956, in Van Vleck, Texas. She preceded him in death on Nov. 8, 1996.

He moved to Artesia in 1961 from Lake Jackson, Texas. Mr. Puckett was the owner and operator of Valley Pest Control. He was a member of the Elks Lodge.

He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean Conflict.

Other survivors include a son, Gary DeSoto of Carlsbad; two brothers, Clinton A. Puckett of Bremerton, Wash., and Lee Puckett of Irving, Texas; two sisters, Inez Head and Christine Parks, both of Roswell; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

A brother, Raymond Puckett, preceded him in death.

Larry R. Brewster

MIDLAND - Services for former Hobbs resident Larry Brewster of Midland were held on Wednesday, March 14, at Pipkin Funeral Home Chapel in Midland.

Robert Frazier of Valley View Baptist Church officiated. Burial followed in Resthaven North.

Mr. Brewster, 48, died on Saturday, March 10 in Houston. He was born Nov. 23, 1952, in Farmersville, La. He married Debby West on Oct. 12, 1974, in Hobbs.

The couple moved to Midland in 1987.

He was a truck driver for Texas Star Express.

Survivors include his wife of the home; two sons, Darrell Brewster and Justin Brewster, both of Midland; a sister, Dolores Dutton of Hobbs; and his grandmother, Mary Goodwin of Rustin, La.

His parents, Marvin and Margie Brewster; and his father-in-law, preceded him in death.

Contributions may be made to the Midland Citizens Fire Academy Alumni Association.

Marian Peveler

LOVINGTON - Graveside services for Marian Peveler of Lovington will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Tatum Cemetery. Dr. Leon Green will officiate. Visitation will be held from noon-6 p.m. Sunday. Services are under the direction of Bethany Funeral Home, Lovington.

Mrs. Peveler, 81, died March 15 in Lubbock. She was born Feb. 27, 1920, on a ranch in north Lea County. She married Leroy "Wad" Peveler on Dec. 20, 1939, in Roswell. They worked on the family ranch that was started by their family in 1933.

The Pevelers retired in 1975 and moved to Lovington. Mrs. Peveler was a member of the Eastern Star in Lovington and First Baptist Church in Tatum.

She is survived by her husband Leroy Peveler of Lovington, son Tom Peveler of Lovington, grandson T.D. Peveler of Lovington, brother Tom Bess of Tatum, and two great-grandchildren.

J.B. Puckett Sr.

ARTESIA - Graveside services for J.B. Puckett Sr. of Artesia will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Twin Oaks Memorial Park. No visitation is planned.

Mr. Puckett, 70, died Friday, March 16, at his son's home in Hobbs. He was owner and operator of Valley Pest Control.

Placida Martinez

Funeral arrangements for Placida Martinez of Hobbs are pending with West Funeral Home of Carlsbad.

Ms. Martinez, 96, died Wednesday, March 14, at Hobbs Health Care Center. She was born Oct. 11, 1904.

Marian Peveler

Funeral services for Marian Peveler, 81, are pending at Bethany Funeral Home. Ms. Peveler died Thursday, March 15, in Lubbock. She was a life-long resident of Lea County.

Robert Sartain

LOVINGTON - Services for Robert "Bob" Sartain of Lovington will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Jackson Avenue Baptist Church. The Rev. Herb Bryant will officiate. Burial will take place at Lovington Cemetery.

Services are under the direction of Smith-Rogers Funeral Home.

Mr. Sartain, 86, died Wednesday, March 14, at Lea Regional Medical Center. He was born April 1, 1914, in Hollis, Okla. Mr. Sartain was a member of Jackson Avenue Baptist Church and was a veteran of World War II, serving in New Guinea for three years with the U.S. Army.

Mr. Sartain is survived by three brothers, Frank Sartain of Dumas, Texas, Earl Sartain of Belville, Ill., and Jim Sartain of Amarillo; two sisters, Mae Mansfield of Wichita Falls, and Mildred Hamilton of Clovis; many nieces, nephews and friends.

Mr. Sartain was preceded in death by his wife Vidah Sartain in 1987; three sisters, Jewell Reynolds, Lucille Payne and Betty Sartain; and three brothers, William Sartain, J.C. Sartain and Homer Sartain.

Memorial contributions may be made to Jackson Avenue Baptist Church.

Robert Sartain

LOVINGTON - Services are pending with Smith-Rogers Funeral Home for Robert Sartain of Lovington.

Mr. Sartain, 86, died Wednesday, March 14, at Lea Regional Medical Center. He was born April 1, 1914, in Hollis, Okla.

Billye "Sellie" James

Memorial services for Billye "Sellie" James of Hobbs will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Taylor Memorial Baptist Church. The Rev. Dean Mathis will officiate.

Cremation has taken place and services are under the direction of Chapel of Hope Funeral Home.

Mrs. James, 56, died Wednesday, March 7, at Lea Regional Medical Center. She was born April 25, 1944, in El Paso, Texas.

A former member of the Cactus Cowbells of Lea County, she was affiliated with Taylor Memorial Baptist Church.

Mrs. James is survived by her son Kelly James of Hobbs; a daughter, Merry Kathleen James of Hobbs; and one grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her husband, two brothers and her parents, Henry and Edna McLaughlin.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Lea County Battered Women's Shelter, 200 N. Dalmont.

Bob Maixner

Memorial service for Bob Maixner of Hobbs will be held at 2 p.m. today at First United Methodist Church. The Rev. J. Gorton Smith will officiate.

Cremation will take place at a later time. Services are under the direction of Griffin Funeral Home.

Mr. Maixner, 81, died Sunday, March 11, in Hobbs. He was born July 13, 1919, in Lincoln, Neb.

Mr. Maixner received the Purple Heart after he served in the field artillery during World War II. He served in the U.S. Army attached to Gen. George Patton's unit.

A letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service for 30 years, he had celebrated 59 years of marriage to Lorraine Maixner.

Survivors include his wife of the home; one son, Robert D. Maixner of Las Vegas, Nev.; a sister, Mildred Nienaber of Kearney, Neb.; and aone brother Jerry Maixner of Austin.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Jerry and Anna Maixner.

Memorial contributions may be made to First United Methodist Church, 200 E. Snyder, or Vista Care Family Hospice, 1515 W. Calle Sur.

Martin "Lee" Edwards

EL PASO - Services were held on Friday, March 9, for Martin "Lee" Edwards at the Martin Funeral Home in El Paso. The burial took place at Fort Bliss National Cemetery with military honors.

Mr. Edwards died March 6 in El Paso. He was born Dec. 10, 1914, in Comanche County, Texas. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in Italy.

Survivors include his wife, Willie Edwards; two daughters, Kathy Shropshire of Hobbs and Elizabeth of the home; and two granddaughters, Charity and Faith of Hobbs.

Lida Marion Carpenter

DENVER CITY - Graveside services for Lida Marion Carpenter of Denver City will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Friday, March 16, at West Hill Cemetery in Sherman, Texas. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Ratliff Funeral Home and Waldo Funeral Home.

Ms. Carpenter, 81, died Monday, March 12. She was born April 18, 1919, in Sherman, Texas.

Ms. Carpenter is survived by her three children and their spouses: Betty and Ken Walden of Oil City, Pa.; Jerry "Buddy" and Jean Carpenter of San Antonio; and Kay and Charles Phipps of Dripping Springs, Texas. She is also survived by two half-brothers, Billy Joe and Larry Wayne Stepherson, and six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Ms. Carpenter was preceded in death in 1985 by her husband, Milton Carpenter.

The family asks that donations be made to the ALS Society (for Lou Gehrig's disease), or to a favorite charity.

Bob Maixner

Memorial services for Bob Maixner of Hobbs will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at First United Methodist Church. The Rev. J. Gorton Smith will officiate. Cremation will take place at a later time. Services are under the direction of Griffin Funeral Home.
