Kenneth R. Shorter

AZTEC - Services for Kenneth Roger "Red" Shorter of Aztec will be held at 10 a.m. today at Bethel Baptist Church in Aztec. The Rev. Bob Schlauger will officiate. Burial will be at the Aztec Community Cemetery with the Honor Guard from the V.F.W. Post 2182 giving military honors.

Services are under the arrangements of Cope Memorial Chapel.

Mr. Shorter, 77, died Saturday, March 10, in Farmington. He was born on Nov. 21, 1923, in Cheney, Kan., to William and Eva Perkins Shorter. He moved to the Aztec area in the early 1950s.

Mr. Shorter worked as a tool pusher in the oilfield. He was a family man who cherished time with his family and grandkids.

Mr. Shorter served in World War II as an airplane mechanic and a line chief for the 36th Fighter Squadron in the U.S. Army Air Corps. He served in the Philippines for 21 months, reaching the rank of staff sergeant before leaving the Army on Dec. 30, 1945.

Mr. Shorter is survived by his wife, Jean, of the home; two sons, Rickie Shorter and Roger Shorter, both of Aztec; three daughters, Donna McCabe of Aztec, Susie Mumm of Salida, Colo., and Kendra Skalenda of Odessa; four brothers, Jack Shorter of Tulsa, Guy Shorter of Pawtucket, R.I.; Art Shorter of Jacksonville, Fla., Francis Shorter of Bloomfield; 17 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Stephens C. Turner

CONROE, Texas - Funeral services for Stephens Craig Turner of Odessa will be held at 2 p.m. today in the Metcalf Funeral Home Chapel in Conroe. Burial wll follow in Forest Park The Woodlans Cemetery.

Mr. Turner, 21, died Friday, March 9. He was born July 11, 1979, in Rankin.

Mr. Turner is survived by his parents, Larry and Naomi Turner of Hobbs; his mother, Melinda Kelly; three sisters, Ruby Turner of Odessa, Crista Rininger of Ballinger, and Sharon Turner of Coleman; two brothers, Larry Wayne Turner of Sweetwater and Eddie Turner of Coleman; and his grandmother, Ruby Turner of Coleman.

He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Wayne Turner.

Sheena Weldy

Services for Sheena Weldy of Hobbs will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, March 14, at the Salvation Army Chapel at 820 S. Fowler in Hobbs. Capt. Robert Keene will officiate. Burial will follow at Prairie Haven Memorial Park. Services are under the direction of Chapel of Hope Funeral Home.

Ms. Weldy, 14, died Friday, March 9, at Lea Regional Medical Center. She was born Dec. 28, 1986, in Hobbs.

Ms. Weldy was a student at Houston Junior High School. She was a junior soldier of the Salvation Army Corps Cadet and a girl guard of the Salvation Army.

Ms. Weldy is survived by her mother, Donna Weldy of Hobbs; two sisters, Crystal Weldy of Hobbs and Jessica Palmateer of Wickett, Texas; a brother, Joshua Weldy of Hobbs; paternal grandparents, Homer and Louise Pacely of Lubbock; maternal grandfather, George Weldy of Wickett; a nephew; several cousins; and several aunts and uncles.

She was preceded in death by her father, Johnny Stevens.

Robert J. Maixner

Services are pending for Robert J. Maixner of Hobbs at Griffin Funeral Home.

Mr. Maixner, 81, died Sunday, March 11, at his home. He was born on July 13, 1919, in Nebraska.

Mr. Maixner is survived by his wife, Lorraine Maixner, of the home; a son, Robert D. Maixner of Las Vegas, Nev.; a brother, Jerry Maixner of Austin; a sister, Mildred Nienaber of Kearney, Neb.; and several nieces and nephews.

Peggy C. Mitchell

LOVINGTON - Services for Peggy Coffer Mitchell of Tatum will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, March 14, at Bethany Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Leon Green will officiate. Burial will follow at Lovington Cemetery. Services are under the direction of Bethany Funeral Home.

Mrs. Mitchell, 61, died Sunday, March 11, at her home. She was born on Nov. 10, 1939, in Roxton, Texas, to John and Gladys Jones. She was a resident of Lovington since 1972 and moved to Tatum where she met and married Lloyd Mitchell on June 26, 2000. She was a member of Victory Baptist Church in Lovington.

Mrs. Mitchell is survived by her husband of the home; a sister, Carrie Young of Alamogordo; a special sister, Maudie Howell of Lovington; a daughter, Pam Raap of Lovington; three sons, Gary Don Coffer of McDonald, Johnny Coffer and Dean Coffer, both of Lovington; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Louis Coffer; a son, Richard Keith Coffer; and her parents.

Virgil Franklin

Services for Virgil L. Franklin of Eunice will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at the Calvary Funeral Home Chapel. Elio Barrios, Vista Care Family Hospice Chaplain, will officiate at the Calvary Funeral Home Chapel.

Burial will be at Brunson Memorial Cemetery in Eunice.

Mr. Franklin will lie in state today from 2-6 p.m. and Monday from 9 a.m. until time for the service. Mr. Franklin, 89, died Friday, March 9. He was born Aug. 27, 1911, in Howard Texas.

He was affiliated with the Baptist Church. Mr. Franklin moved to Eunice in 1997 from Greenwood Acres, Texas.

He is survived by his wife of the home Dovie Bettis Franklin; and three sons, Russell Franklin, Memphis, Tenn., V.E. "Ben" Franklin, Daytona Beach, Fla., Leslie Don Franklin of Odessa; one daughter, Martha Ann Poe of Campwood, Texas; and a brother, Clyde J. Franklin, Big Spring, and by four grandchildren, six great grandchildren, and numerous other family members.

Delfino Rendon

Funeral services are pending with Griffin Funeral Home for Delfino Rendon, 59. He died Saturday, Mar. 10, in Lubbock.

He is survived by his wife, Lita; one son and six daughters; four brothers; two sisters.

Auvy McBride

Services for Auvy Lee McBride Jr. will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, March 12, at the Church of Christ in Bertram, Texas. Mark Ingram will be officiating. Burial will be at Bear Creek Cemetery near Bertram.

Arrangements made by Clements-Wilcox Funeral Home in Burnett, Texas.

Mr. McBride, 38, died Friday, Mar. 9. He was born on Mar. 10, 1962, to Auvy McBride Sr. and Leslie Nichols in Lubbock. He was self-employed as a computer consultant.

Mr. McBride is survived by his wife, Nora McBride; two sons, Buck Beighley of Georgetown, Texas, and Michael McBride of Bertram; three daughters, Valerie and Lisa McBride, and Aileen Beighley, all of Bertram; two sisters, Leah Brock of Burnet, Texas, and Andrea Davidson of Kennewick, Wash.; a step-mother, Shirley McBride of Lubbock; grandmother, Alma McBride Williams of Post Texas; as well as other relatives and close friends.

Merldene R. Barker

Services for Merldene R. Barker of Hobbs were held at 2 p.m. Friday at Calvary Memorial Chapel. Burial will take place at Prairie Haven Memorial Park. Services were under the direction of Calvary Memorial Funeral Home.

Mrs. Barker, 72, died Tuesday, March 6, at her home.

She was born on April 12, 1928, in Romulus, Okla. She was affiliated with Eastside Church of Christ in Duncan, Okla., and attended Jefferson Street Church of Christ in Hobbs. She married Paul Barker on Jan. 11, 1947. Mrs. Barker lived in Hobbs for 32 years, moving here from Duncan. She was a homemaker.

Mrs. Barker is survived by her husband of the home; a son, Jeff Barker of Hobbs; two daughters, Paula Clark of Lubbock and Barbara Brown of Midland; a brother, Max Dunn of Oklahoma City; a sister, Mildred McNair of Bartlesville, Okla.; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Francis and Rosa Dunn; a brother, Marion; a sister, Marguerite; and a great-granddaughter, Chloe.

Virgil L. Franklin

EUNICE - Services are pending for Virgil L. Franklin of Eunice at Calvary Funeral Home of Eunice.

Mr. Franklin, 89, died Friday, March 9, in Hobbs. He was born Aug. 27, 1911, in Howard County, Texas.

Sheena Weldy

Services for Sheena Weldy of Hobbs are pending at Chapel of Hope Funeral Home.

Ms. Weldy, 14, died Friday, March 9, at Lea Regional Medical Center. She was born Dec. 28, 1986.

Ms. Weldy is survived by her mother, Donna Weldy, of Hobbs.

Delbert I. Mourning Jr.

Memorial services for Delbert Irwin "D.I." Mourning Jr. of Hobbs will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Monday, March 12, at Santa Fe National Cemetery in Santa Fe. The service is under the direction of Hubbard-Kelley Funeral Home.

Mr. Mourning, 78, died Tuesday, March 6, at Medical Center Hospital. He was born April 19, 1922, in Wichita, Kan.

Mr. Mourning flew with the Royal Air Force and then with the Army Air Corps 8th Air Force on A-20 attack bombers and B-17 heavy bombers. He acquired several medals, including the Distinguished Flying Cross and six air medals.

Mr. Mourning worked as a mason and a musician. He had a great love for music and his family.

Mr. Mourning is survived by his wife, Barbara Mourning, of the home; his sons Richard Mourning of Godley, Texas, Del Mourning of Odessa, Dan Mourning of Albuquerque; daughters Margaret Mourning Abbott of Odessa, Denise Fletcher of Uvalde and Michelle Bean of Austin; and two sisters, Irene Hamm and Florence Mourning, both of Denver.

He was preceded in death by his daughters, Diane Mourning; sister, Virginia Baker; and brothers Ed and Leonard Mourning.

George W. McDonald

Memorial services for George William McDonald of Hobbs will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, March 11, at the Highland Christian Church. The Rev. William Parkey will officiate. Burial will take place today at 2 p.m. at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Odessa. Services are under the direction of Bethany Funeral Home.

Mr. McDonald, 78, died Tuesday, March 6, at Lea Regional Medical Center. He was born May 24, 1922, in Wabash County, Ill. He married Lois Tyler Smith on May 8, 1953, in Allendale, Ill.

Mr. McDonald is survived by his wife of the home; a sister, Mary Blythe of Mt. Carmel, Ill.; two sons, Tommy Smith of Bloomfield and Fred McDonald of Tuscola, Ill.; a daughter, Carol Barrow of Odessa; 11 grandchildren; and several great grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents George E. McDonald and Ella Walser McDonald; a sister, Joan Deisher; and a brother, Jimmy McDonald.

Memorial contributions may be made to the youth group of Highland Christian Church at 500 E. Bender in Hobbs.

Edward Evans

Services are pending for Edward Evans of Hobbs at Chapel of Hope Funeral Home.

Mr. Evans, 80, died Thursday, March 8, at his home. He was born Oct. 2, 1920.

Lee E. Etier

ADA, Okla. - Graveside services for Lee Eleanor "Lucy" Etier of Carrollton, Texas, formerly of Ada, will be held at 2 p.m. CST on Monday, March 12, at Mill Creek Cemetery in Ada. The Rev. Bob Bender will officiate. Services are under the direction of Smith Funeral Home in Ada.

Mrs. Etier, 88, died Friday, March 9, in Carrollton. She was born Dec. 31, 1912, in Greenville, Texas, to Oscar Donaghe and Lula Belle Easter.

Mrs. Etier graduated from Sulpher High School and received her bachelor of arts from ECU. She was affiliated with the First Baptist Church of Ada. Mrs. Etier taught school for several years in Oklahoma. She married Elvin "Spec" Etier on March 8, 1941, in Wayne.

Mrs. Etier is survived by a daughter, Jill Botkin of Carrollton; two sons, Richard Etier of Hobbs and Marc Etier of Ada; and a sister, Nell Hawkins of Carrollton.

She was preceded in death by her husband; two sons, Alan and Christopher Etier; and two brothers, Richard and Albert Donaghe.
