James F. Kays

MARIETTA, Okla. - Services for James Franklin Kays of Hobbs will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, June 15, at Flanagan-Watts Funeral Home chapel in Marietta. Tracy Roby will officiate.

Burial will follow at Lake View Cemetery in Marietta.

Mr. Kays, 75, died Tuesday, June 12, at Hobbs Healthcare. He was born Jan. 2, 1926, in Pilot Point, Texas. He married Myrtle Marie Sharp on March 4, 1950, in Marietta.

Mr. Kays served in the Field Artillery during World War II. He was a retired truck driver and a member of Highland Baptist Church.

Mr. Kays is survived by his wife; four sons, James V. Kays of Ackerly, Texas, William "Bill" Kays, Jerry Kays and David Kays, all of Hobbs; one brother, T.J. Kays of Thackerville, Okla.; and nine grandchildren.

Mr. Kays was preceded in death by his parents, Homer and Francis Ruth Kays; and one brother.

John F. McCann

Funeral services for John F. McCann, 37, of Hobbs are scheduled for 2 p.m. today, June 12, at Chapel of Hope Funeral Chapel with D.A. Cochran officiating. Burial will be at Prairie Haven Memorial Park. Visitation is scheduled from 8 a.m. until the time of service today.

Mr. McCann died on Saturday, June 9, in Hobbs.

He was born on Jan. 26, 1964, in Hobbs and was a Hobbs Schools employee.

Mr. McCann is survived by two sons, Michael and Steven McCann of Hobbs; one daughter, Starla McCann of Hobbs; his father, Benny McCann of Hobbs; his mother, Joyce Peacock of Hobbs; two brothers, David and Ben McCann of Hobbs; one sister, Cheryle Estala of Hobbs; and several nieces and nephews.

Sally Fortner

Funeral services are pending at Chapel of Hope Funeral Home for Sally Fortner, 90, of Hobbs.

Mrs. Fortner died Monday, June 11, at Hobbs Healthcare.

She was born on June 2, 1911, in Drew County, Ark.

Joe Sims

Funeral services for Joe Sims, 81, of Eunice, are pending at Calvary Funeral Home in Eunice.

Mr. Sims died Sunday, June 10, in Eunice.

He was born Oct. 18, 1919, in Carlsbad.

Immediate survivors include his wife, Dorothy Sims, of the home; and one son, Joe P. Sims of Eunice.

Zethel Mae Welch

Funeral services for Zethel Mae Welch, 90, of Lubbock are scheduled for 2 p.m. (CDT) Wednesday, June 13, at Forrest Heights Methodist Church in Lubbock with the Rev. Vergil Ichtertz officiating.

Burial, under the direction of Chapel of Hope Funeral Home, will be in Resthaven Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. (CDT) today at Rix Funeral Home in Lubbock.

Mrs. Welch died on Saturday, June 9, at Covenant Medical Center.

She was born on Sept. 7, 1910, in Ellis County, Texas, and married Claude Lee Welch on Feb. 17, 1929, in Muleshoe, Texas.

He preceded her in death in December 1960.

Mrs. Welch is survived by five daughters, Avis Kellum of Hobbs, Sara Pippen of Amarillo, Claudette Welch of Largo, Fla., Rita May McIntyre of Grand Prairie, Texas, and Jonnie Stilley of Lubbock; one son, Gary Zan Welch of Arlington, Texas; 17 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

In addition to her husband, Mrs. Welch was preceded in death by her parents and one son, J.D. Welch.

Ethelene Davis

RUIDOSO - Services for Ethelene Steed Davis, formerly of Hobbs, will be at 10:45 a.m. on Tuesday, June 12, at First Baptist Church, 126 Church St., in Ruidoso.

A memorial service will follow at 2 p.m. at Inn of the Mountain Gods in Ruidoso.

Mrs. Davis died Saturday, May 19. She was born April 28, 1927 in Bloomburg, Texas.

After marrying her first husband, George Gray, Davis moved to New York at 19. After having three daughters, Davis moved to El Paso where she worked as a long-distance operator and a waitress to support her three daughters before marrying her second husband, Cleatis B. Davis in Hobbs.

Mrs. Davis, also known as "Mickey," graduated from Fairpark High School in Shreveport, La. She attended the University of Texas at El Paso and Central Texas College in Killeen, Texas.

In 1998 Mrs. Davis was licensed by the state of Texas as a recording agent. She is a past member of the Independent Insurance Women's Association and worked as a personal line underwriter, office manager and account executive for Whyburn, Marsh and JD Williams Insurance Agencies in El Paso.

Mrs. Davis is survived by her husband Cleatis B. Davis, formerly of Hobbs; three children, daughter Georgia Davis, daughter Candice Retzer and a son, David Davis and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Davis' youngest daughter preceded her in death.

Gabriel Salazar Rios

Graveside services for Gabriel Salazar Rios of Hobbs will be held at 11:30 a.m. Monday, June 11, at Prairie Haven Cemetery.

The infant was born and died on Friday, June 7, at University Medical Center in Lubbock.

He is survived by his parents, Mario G. Rios and Rachel Salazar Rios, both of Hobbs; one sister, Gabrielle S. Rios; maternal grandparents, Rebecca Salazar of Hobbs and Joe Salazar of El Paso; paternal grandparents, Jesus Rios and Paula Rios, both of Hobbs; and several aunts and uncles.

John McCann

Services for John McCann of Hobbs are pending with Chapel of Hope Funeral Home.

Mr. McCann, 37, died Saturday, June 9, in Hobbs. He was born Jan. 26, 1964.

Dr. Francis Middlebrook

TATUM, Texas - Services for former Hobbs resident Dr. Francis Middlebrook of Tatum will be held at 10 a.m. today at the Travis Street Chapel of the Sullivan Funeral Home in Marshall, Texas. Services are under of Sullivan Funeral Home in Marshall. The Rev. Harold Brown will officiate.

Dr. Middlebrook, 83, died Tuesday, June 5, at Marshall Regional Medical Center in Marshall. He was born April 1, 1918, in Whitney, Texas.

Dr. Middlebrook graduated from Whitney High School in Whitney, Texas, and attended the University of Texas in Austin. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was a retired physician. He was a member of the Suez Temple and a Mason.

Survivors include a daughter, Kay Jones of Marshall; three step-children, Chris Middlebrook of New Mexico, Linda Burdett of Kansas and David Middlebrook of Hobbs; one brother, Thomas Middlebrook of Whitney; one sister, Sandra Mahurin of Benbrook, Texas; and three grandchildren, Jennifer Jones, Alex Jones and Nicholas Jones all of Marshall

Dr. Middlebrook was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, W.T. Middlebrook of Whitney; and a sister, Ann Wilson.

Tomas Gonzalez

LOVINGTON - Services for Tomas Gonzalez of Lovington will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, June 8, at St. Thomas Catholic Church. The Rev. Franklin Eichhorst will officiate. Services are under the direction of Bethany Funeral Home.

Burial will follow at Resthaven Cemetery. A rosary will be held at 7 p.m. today at Bethany Funeral Home Chapel.

Mr. Gonzalez, 73, died Monday, June 4, at Covenant Medical Center in Lubbock. He was born Dec. 29, 1927, in Seguin, Texas, to Anastacio and Rafugia Gonzalez. He married Elva Garza in Lovington.

Mr. Gonzalez worked many years as a contractor in Lubbock before retiring and moving back to Lovington. He was a member of the New Mexico Game Birds Association, Tommy's Club and the General Legions Club.

Mr. Gonzalez is survived by his wife of the home; four sons, Tomas Gonzalez Jr., David Gonzalez and Robert Gonzalez, all of Lovington, and Christopher Gonzalez of Huntsville, Texas; three daughters, Irene Foster of Lovington, Rosemary Gonzalez of Leveland, Texas, and Chencia Foster of Huntsville; two sisters, Margarita Ruiz of Albuquerque and Paula Ramirez of , Texas; and five grandchildren.

Mr. Gonzalez was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers; and four sisters.

Mary M. Yarbrough

Services for Mary M. Yarbrough of Hobbs will be held at 3:30 p.m. today at American Baptist Church. The Rev. Rudy Rodriguez will officiate. Services are under the direction of Bethany Funeral Home.

Cremation will follow.

Mrs. Yarbrough, 57, died Tuesday, June 5, at Lea Regional Medical Center. She was born April 23, 1944, in El Paso to Ambrosio and Maria Galindo.

Mrs. Yarbrough was a resident of Hobbs for the last 20 years. She was very active in her church.

Mrs. Yarbrough is survived by her fiancé, Isidro Hernandez; three sons, Bobby Yarbrough of Hobbs, Kenneth Yarbrough of Fort Stockton, and Johnny Yarbrough of Fort Davis; her mother of Marathon, Texas; four brothers, Daniel Galindo and Manuel Galindo, both of Marathon, and Fred Galindo and Jesus Galindo, both of Lovington; four grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Yarbrough was preceded in death by her father.

Lavern Walker

Services for Lavern Walker of Hobbs will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, June 8, at Prairie Haven Chapel. The Rev. Bruce Kirby and the Rev. Chris Barnett will officiate. Services are under the direction of Griffin Funeral Home.

Burial will follow at Prairie Haven Cemetery. The body will lie in state from 8 a.m.-8 p.m. today and from 8-9 a.m. Friday at Griffin Funeral Home.

Mrs. Walker, 67, died Tuesday, June 5, in Hobbs. She was born June 11, 1933, in Nacogdoches, Texas. She married Emmett John Walker Jr. on Aug. 6, 1949.

Mrs. Walker grew up in West Texas. She was a certified nurse's aide at Good Samaritan, La Siesta, Hobbs Healthcare and private home care. She enjoyed sewing and ceramics.

Mrs. Walker is survived by five daughters, Brenda Buckman of Albuquerque and Karen Edwards, Terry Newcomb, Charlotte Dendy and Corinna Haggard, all of Hobbs; one foster daughter, Faye Turner of Bayfield, Colo.; 13 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Walker was preceded in death by her husband; her parents, Cates Ford Fowler and Opal Fowler; and one brother, C.F. Fowler Jr.

Mark H. Tattan

Services for Mark H. Tattan of Hobbs will take place at a later date at St. Christopher's Episcopal Church. The Rev. Edwin Watts will officiate. Services are under the direction of Griffin Funeral Home.

Cremation will take place.

Mr. Tattan, 84, died Sunday, June 3, at Lea Regional Medical Center. He was born May 4, 1917, in Glasgow, Mont. He married Frances Tattan on June 12, 1955, in Tucson. She preceded him in death on April 24, 2001.

Mr. Tattan was a member of St. Christopher's Episcopal Church. He served in the U.S. Air Force in Europe during World War II. He had been employed with Los Alamos National Lab for 30 years. He enjoyed gardening and camping and loved his dog, Bo.

Mr. Tattan is survived by two daughters, Marcia Wolske and Margaret Patterson of Hobbs; two sisters, Mary Bridges of Pasco, Wash., and Theodora Lewis of Broken Bow, Okla.; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Mr. Tattan was also preceded in death by his first wife, Meredith; and a brother.
