Carmen Garate

DENVER CITY - Services for Carmen Garate of Denver City will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, June 1, at St. Williams Catholic Church. The Rev. Andres Mendoza will officiate. Services are under the direction of Ratliff Funeral Home.

Burial will follow at Denver City Memorial Park. Holy Hour will be held from 8:30-9:30 a.m. today at St. Williams Catholic Church. Rosary will be held at 8 p.m. today.

Mrs. Garate, 79, died Tuesday, May 29, in Lubbock. She was born July 16, 1921, in Calvert, Texas. She married Joe Garate on June 12, 1940. He preceded her in death in February 1988.

Mrs. Garate was a member of the Lady Guadalupe group and the women's CCD prayer group. She was a member of the Catholic Church and a homemaker.

Mrs. Garate is survived by two sons, Joe Garate of Rawlins, Wyo., and Jesse Garate of Denver City; five daughters, Esther Nevarez of Denver City, Delores Mullinax of Morton, Connie Carroll of Seminole, Margaret Macias of Hobbs and Elsa Morales of Brownfield; two brothers; two sisters; 13 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Melvin V. Whitehead

Services for Melvin Virgil Whitehead of Hobbs are pending with Chapel of Hope Funeral Home.

Mr. Whitehead, 89, died Tuesday, May 29, at Hobbs Healthcare. He was born Dec. 31, 1911, in Hasse, Texas.

Mr. Whitehead is survived by his wife, Syble L. Harris Whitehead of Hobbs; five sons; and one daughter.

William G. Stewart

EUNICE - Services for William Gary Stewart of Oak Lawn, Ill., will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 2, at the First Christian Church in Eunice. The Rev. Andy Harris of Carlsbad will officiate. He will be assisted by Lloyd Simpson.

The family will hold private rites following the service at Brunson Memorial Cemetery in Eunice. Cremation has already taken place.

Mr. Stewart, 49, died Thursday, May 17, at Holy Cross Hospital in Chicago. He was born March 22, 1952, in Wellington, Texas.

Mr. Stewart grew up in Eunice and graduated from Eunice High School in 1970. He married Pamela Sue Schmucker in 1972. He attended Ozark Bible College, graduating in 1978.

The couple moved to Chicago in 1984. Mr. Stewart received his master's degree from Olivet University in Chicago in 1996. He was employed by Holy Cross Hospital at the time of his death.

Mr. Stewart is survived by his wife of the home; his mother, Estelle Stewart of Hobbs; his father, Bill Stewart of Lake Havasu City, Ariz.; three sisters, Jackie Locke of Lake Havasu City, Tami Stewart and Keena Stewart, both of Eunice; three nephews and one niece; and numerous friends and relatives.

Frances M. Smith

LOVINGTON - Services for Francine Marie Smith, formerly of Lovington, will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, June 1, at Bethany Funeral Home Chapel. Herb Bryant will officiate.

Burial will follow at Lovington Cemetery.

Mrs. Smith, 70, died Sunday, May 27, in Evansville, Wyo. She was born June 30, 1930, in Sayre, Okla., to Ben and Vivian Smith. She married R.J. Smith on Sept. 16, 1948, in Caddo, Okla.

Mrs. Smith lived in Lovington for 48 years and was a member of Trinity Baptist Church before moving to Evansville.

Mrs. Smith is survived by five daughters, Susie Marie Nicholson of Evansville, Glenda Kennemer of Dallas, Loretta Carson of Gillette, Wyo., Rosalie Mabe of Madison, N.C., and Marlene Rennick of Gillette; one son, Donny Ray Smith of Dallas; one stepson, Sammy Don Smith of Atoka, Okla.; one sister, Susie Lorene Hart of Atoka; one brother, Archie Smith of Lane, Okla.; 18 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by her husband in 1994; and one son, Bobby Gene Smith, in 2000.

Cora C. Pruett

Graveside services for Cora C. Pruett of Hobbs will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, June 1, at Prairie Haven Cemetery. The Rev. Jake Armstrong of VistaCare Family Hospice will officiate. Services are under the direction of Griffin Funeral Home.

Mrs. Pruett, 85, died Wednesday, May 30, at her home. She was born Sept. 6, 1915, in Woodson, Texas. She married Lloyd E. Pruett on Nov. 6, 1934, in Estancia. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1989.

Mrs. Pruett moved to Hobbs in 1949. She enjoyed gardening and cooking.

Mrs. Pruett is survived by two sons, Dale Pruett of Jal and Clyde Pruett of Hobbs; one daughter, Bonnie Griffin of Hobbs; one sister, Billie McLendon of Earlsville, Md.; special friends, Donna Glover and Janel Burkhart; six grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Pruett was also preceded in death by nine siblings.

Gary D. Pemberton

CARLSBAD - Services for Gary Don Pemberton of Carlsbad will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday, June 1, at First Baptist Church in Denver City. The Rev. LaVoid Ford of Hobbs will officiate. Services are under the direction of Boyer Funeral Home in Seminole.

Burial will follow at Denver City Memorial Park Cemetery.

Mr. Pemberton, 40, died Sunday, May 27, at his home. He was born Dec. 10, 1960, in Denver City. He was a hairstylist. He moved from Denver City to Carlsbad in 1962. He was a member of the Church of God in Carlsbad.

Mr. Pemberton is survived by one son, Michael Don Cook of Carlsbad; his mother, Jo Ann Richardson of Carlsbad; his grandmother, Lois Aulds of Denver City; one brother, Curtis Pemberton of Hobbs; one sister, Cheryl Jo Ann Winfield of Carlsbad; and two uncles and two aunts.

Ethel M. McKeel

Memorial services for former Hobbs resident Ethel Marie Becker McKeel will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, June 3, at the First Congregational Church in Colorado Springs.

Mrs. McKeel died Wednesday, May 23. She was a 1966 graduate of Hobbs High School.

She is survived by her husband, Russ; one daughter, Laurel; one son, Ryan; one sister, Gerrye Williams of Whitehouse, Texas; and her parents.

Phillip L. Neely

GRAHAM, Texas - Services for Phillip Lynn "Phil" Neely of Graham were held last Sunday at Medlan Chapel Cemetery in Young County. The Rev. Steve Hill officiated.

Services were under the direction of Morrison Funeral Home.

Mr. Neely, 45, died Friday, May 25, at Graham Regional Medical Center. He was born Oct. 20, 1955, in Hobbs to John Grover and Elva Irene Neely. He graduated from Hobbs High School in 1973.

Mr. Neely married Sandra Kay Register on Dec. 5, 1975, in Hobbs. He had been a resident of Graham for several years, working in the oilfield. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church.

Mr. Neely is survived by his wife; two sisters, Geraldine Kinman of Hobbs and Pat Venable of Lovington; and three brothers, Gary Neely of Breckenridge, Texas, Ralph Neely of Savannah, Ga., and Richard Neely of Hobbs.

Mr. Neely was preceded in death by his son, Christopher Neely; and one brother, Marvin Ray Neely.

Ola Young

BIG SPRING, Texas - Services for Ola Young of Big Spring will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, May 31, at Nalley-Pickle & Welch Rosewood Chapel. The Rev. Kenneth Patrick of Baptist Memorial Center in San Angelo will officiate.

Burial will follow at Trinity Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 7-8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Services are under the direction of Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home.

Mrs. Young, 80, died Monday, May 28, at her home. She was born April 9, 1921, in Kilbourne, La. She married William W. "Bill" Young on Oct. 18, 1941, in Myrtis, La.

Mrs. Young and her husband moved to Big Spring in 1973 from Eunice. She was a homemaker and a member of First Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband; one son, Phil Young of Midland; one daughter, Gail McKinley of Katy; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Young was preceded in death by one son, Billy Lamar Young; her parents; two brothers; and two sisters.

Inez Estrada

CARLSBAD - Services for Inez "Nash" Estrada of Carlsbad will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, May 31, at San Jose Catholic Church. The Rev. Valentine Jankowski will officiate.

Burial will follow at Santa Catarina Cemetery in Carlsbad with honors by the Carlsbad Veterans Honor Guard. Services are under the direction of Denton-Funchess Funeral Home.

Visitation will be held from 9 a.m.-noon today at the funeral home chapel; and from 1-8 p.m. today at San Jose Catholic Church.

A vigil will be held at 7 p.m. today at San Jose Catholic Church.

Mr. Estrada, 72, died Monday, May 28, at his home. He was born Jan. 21, 1929, to Augustine Estrada and Jesusita Florez Estrada in Carlsbad, where he grew up. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict.

Mr. Estrada married Andrea Gonzales on Jan. 22, 1953. She preceded him in death in October 1985. He married Maria Doubrava on July 11, 1992, in Carlsbad.

Mr. Estrada worked at Joe Florez Construction for many years, retiring in 1992. He was a member of San Jose Catholic Church.

Mr. Estrada is survived by his wife; eight stepsons, Julius Doubrava of Carlsbad, Tom Doubrava and Steven Doubrava, both of Tucson, Joe Doubrava of Houston, Leo Doubrava, John Doubrava, Michael Doubrava and Mark Doubrava, all of Denver; six stepdaughters, Mary Hendren of Loving, Linda Volk of El Paso, Margaret Doubrava of Albuquerque, Patricia Mason of Carlsbad, Angela Throneberry and Dorothy Anderson, both of Las Cruces; one sister, Elisa Rodriguez of Carlsbad; two grandchildren; 27 step-grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; five step-great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.

Mr. Estrada was also preceded in death by two brothers, Samuel Florez Estrada and Richard F. Estrada.

Jakie L. Bolen

Services for Jakie Lea Bolen of Hobbs will be held at 2 p.m. today at the Brownfield Funeral Home. The Rev. Bruce Kirby will officiate, assisted by the Rev. Wayne Shelton.

Mrs. Bolen, 91, died Friday, May 25, in Hobbs. She was born March 29, 1910, in Sugden, Okla. She married W.M. Bolen on June 19, 1932, in McAlester, Okla. The couple moved to Brownfield in 1945.

Mrs. Bolen is survived by three sons, Johnnie Bolen of Brownfield, Harold Bolen of Irving and Charles Bolen of Coleman, Texas; four daughters, Yvonne Agnew and Mary Willis, both of Brownfield, and Clara Bolen and Beatrice Willis, both of Hobbs; 32 grandchildren; 61 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Bolen was preceded in death by her husband; and a son, Clyde Bolen.

Jakie Bolen

Services for Jakie Lea Bolen of Hobbs will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 30, at the Brownfield Funeral Home. The Rev. Bruce Kirby will officiate.

Mrs. Bolen, 91, died May 25 in Hobbs. She was born March 29, 1910, in Sugden, Okla. She married W. M. Bolen June 19, 1932, in McAlester, Okla. They moved to Brownfield in 1945. She was preceded in death by her husband, who died Oct. 16, 1990, and a son, Clyde Bolen, who died Sept. 6, 1980.

Mrs. Bolen is survived by three sons Johnnie Bolen of Brownfield, Harold Bolen of Irving and Charles Bolen of Coleman, Texas; four daughters; Yvonne Agnew of Brownfield, Clara Bolen of Hobbs and Mary Willis of Brownfield; 32 grandchildren; 61 great-grandchildren and 6 great-great grandchildren.
