ALDERETTE: Daniel Alderette Jr., licensed chemical dependent counselor, born Sept. 27, 1928, in Silver City, died Friday, July 14, at his home in San Antonio, Texas, at the age of 71 after a brief struggle with cancer. He completed theological studies in the Major Seminary at Niagara University, Niagara, N.Y., in 1957. He was ordained a Catholic priest for the Diocese of El Paso, Texas. In his very active ministry, he served at St. Patrick's Cathedral and St. Matthew's Church in El Paso, then in Lordsburg, where he led a building drive for the new St. Joseph's Church. He separated from active ministry, and following the death of his first wife he moved to San Antonio and married his wife of 24 years, Gloria Alderette. He worked successively as a substance abuse and dual diagnosis counselor, retiring from the outreach department of San Antonio State Hospital. Upon retirement, he became the clinical director of the Inman Christian Center, Inhalant Abuse Program. Upon retirement from that, he was contracted by the Texas Commission on Alcohol and Drug Abuse as a self-employed outpatient counselor for adolescents in the Texas Youth Commission. He is survived by his wife, Gloria Alderette; their son, Jim Madrid, and daughters, Jessica and husband, George Zepeda, Robin Madrid, Marissa Madrid, and Amy and husband, Ken Ward; eight grandchildren, Kristina, Aaron, Erica, Amanda, Megan, Nicolas, Daniel and Jacob; a sister, Bette, and husband, Rudy Casolari, of Las Vegas, Nev.; his brothers, Edward and wife, Carolyn Alderette, of San Antonio, Alex and wife, Josie Alderette, of El Paso, and Elmo Alderette of Las Cruces; and his other brothers and sisters, Michael and Mary Alderette of Silver City, Jimmy Alderette and companion, Corina, of Las Cruces, Frank and Maxine Jaurequi of Las Cruces, Lenore Alderette and hubsand of Las Cruces, and Velma and Bobby Vargas of Silver City. JAMES: Eunice Hammer James died at her home in Silver City on Monday, July 17. She was 93. She was preceded in death by her husband, Haddon W. James. Mrs. James was born Feb. 15, 1907, in La Crosse, Wis. She moved with her family to Washington, Iowa, and received her primary education there. She attended Stephens College in Columbia, Mo., and earned an art degree at the University of Iowa in Iowa City. She came to Silver City in 1939 to teach art at the university. She is survived by two brothers, William E. Hammer of Sutherlin, Ore., and Robert O. Hammer of Washington, Iowa. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, and several great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews. One sister, Gertrude Eleanor Hammer Bailey, preceded her in death. She is remembered as a world traveler, art educator, and loving sister and aunt. CORDOVA: Jimmie D. Cordova, 68, of Hurley passed away Thursday, July 13, at his home with his family by his side after a nine-month battle with cancer. He was born Feb. 17, 1932, in Hurley to Juan T. Cordova and Juanita Duran. He lived in Hurley all of his life and retired in 1991 from Kennecott Copper Corp. and Phelps Dodge after 42 years as a crusher operator. He married Cora Baca on June 7, 1950, and they shared their life for 50 years. He was a hard worker and a man who always wanted his fam-ily to appreciate the simple things in life the smell of rain, a starry night and the gift of life itself. Mr. Cor-dova was a certified pilot and one of his favorite pas-times was flying in his own private plane. Most of all, he enjoyed being around his family and taking long walks in the early morning. She moved in 1980 to Deming, where she was a communicant of the Catholic Church. His compas-sion for working with young people led to the founding of the Deming Youth Center. BRIGHT: John David "J.D." Bright, 89, of Silver City passed away Monday, July 3, in Gila Regional Medical Center. Mr. Bright was born Feb. 6, 1911, in Jeraldstown, Tenn. He was the son of Harry Earl Bright and Jessie Rush Bright. He married Mabel Elizabeth Bright on June 30, 1939, in Las Vegas, Nev. Mr. Bright is survived by his wife of 61 years, Mabel; two sons, Harry H. Bright and his wife, Linda, of Silver City, and John B. Bright and his wife, Molly, of Big Spring, Texas; five grandchildren; one sister, Mary Nell Shanks of Kingsport, Tenn.; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Luke R. Bright; and two sisters, Dorothy Brandon and Frances Bright. Mr. Bright grew up in Greenville, Tenn., and graduated from Jeraldstown High School. After high school, he moved to Buckhorn, where he lived with his uncle, Col. Ober Bright, and worked for the Moon Ranch as a cowboy. He later moved to Lancaster, Calif., where in the summer months he would work on an alfalfa ranch. In the winter, he would go back to Greenville, and work for R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. In 1950, he moved with his family to Cliff, where he owned and operated a cattle and alfalfa ranch. Mr. Bright also owned and operated a school bus, which routed to Cliff through Dry Creek, and from U.S. 180 to Mule Creek. In 1967, Mr. Bright built the Riverside Meat Market in Riverside, and operated it for five years. In 1975, he sold his business and retired, and moved to Greenville, where he lived until 1997, at which time he moved back to Silver City. Mr. Bright was a mem-ber of the Pleasant Hill Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Chuckey, Tenn., where he served as assistant supervisor of Sunday schools. He enjoyed sports and had a special passion for baseball. Mr. Bright had a great sense of humor and never met a person he did not like. He was born July 18, 1912, in McCool, Miss., to Emmett B. Roberts and Annie C. Veal. He was a graduate of New Mexico State University in education and retired from the Ysleta Independent School District as a teacher. Mr. Roberts returned to El Paso in 1998 after living in Silver City for 18 years. He was a captain in the U.S. Army during World War II, and was awarded the Purple Heart while serving in the European Theater. He was also a member of American Legion Allingham Golding Post No. 18. He loved fishing and camping with his family. He loved woodworking and was an avid reader. A graveside service with military honors was to be held at 1 p.m. today at Fort Bayard National Cemetery. She loved to cook for the grandchildren and others, who looked forward to her chicken tacos, and her apple and apricot pies and turnovers. Visitation will be from 3-5 p.m. Sunday at Baca's Funeral Chapels and from 6-7 p.m. at Infant Jesus Catholic Church in Hurley, where a vigil service will be held at 7 p.m. Mass of the resurrection will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday at Infant Jesus Catholic Church. Committal rites and burial will follow at Hurley Cemetery. Father Dan Porter will officiate at all services. Mrs. Garcia is survived by her daughters, Mary Lou Gutierrez and her husband, Joe, of Hurley, and Grace Bustil-los and her husband, Gabriel, of Lemon Grove, Calif.; and her special grandchildren, Joe Gutierrez Jr. and his wife, Merlinda, of Hurley, Gilbert Gutierrez of Silver City, Arthur J. Gutierrez and his wife, Rosemary, of Fort Bayard, and Gabriel Sean Bustillos of San Diego. She also is survived by her very special great-grandchildren, Arlene Spurgeon and her husband, Chet, of Hur-ley, Arthur John Gutierrez Jr. of Fort Bayard, Jennifer Gutierrez of Fort Bayard, Javier Gutierrez of Fort Ba-yard and Leanne Gutierrez of Hurley; and by many nieces, nephews and friends, who along with the family will miss her dearly. Mrs. Garcia is preceded in death by her brothers, Ramon, Agustin, Frutuso and Jose Ramirez, and her sisters, Ur-bana Laba, Frances Gon-za-lez and Maria Duran. Pallbearers will be Joe G. Gutierrez, Gilbert Gutierrez, Arthur Gutierrez, Gabriel Bustillos, Arthur John Gutierrez and Manuel Dominguez. Honorary bearers are her nieces and nephews.
