Joan O'Sullivan, religious and political activist, 76
SCHOHARIE - Mrs. Joan O'Sullivan, 76, formerly of Route 30, Schoharie-Central Bridge Road, died Monday at the Budd Terrace Nursing Home in Atlanta, Ga., after a long illness.
Mrs. O'Sullivan was born in New York City and had lived in Schoharie from 1968 to 1991. She later moved to California, Florida and Georgia.
She attended St. John's University in New York City, Grailville College in Ohio and the University at Albany.
In the 1940s, Mrs. O'Sullivan worked for Dorothy Day in the Manhattan headquarters of the Catholic Worker.
She became chairwoman of the Schoharie County Department of Social Services Advisory Committee in 1974. She served on the board of the Community Action Program, which helped bring more medical care to the Middleburgh-Schoharie area. Mrs. O'Sullivan served on the advisory committee of the Office for the Aging and represented Schoharie County in reports on nutrition to former President Carter. She also served as a New York state delegate to the 1981 White House Conference on the Aging.
She worked for Catholic Charities from 1979 to 1990.
She and Marie Pracher founded Family and Community Services of Cobleskill, where they started the first program for training home health aides in upstate New York.
She was the inter-county home care recruitment coordinator for the Albany diocese.
Mrs. O'Sullivan was active in the right-to-life movement in the 1970s.
She was a communicant of St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church and its Altar Rosary Society. She was a religious education teacher for 16 years and served on Bishop Howard Hubbard's Albany Diocesan Pastoral Council. She was a delegate to the Washington, D.C., Conference on Diocesan Councils. Mrs. O'Sullivan professed as a Third Order Franciscan in 1983.
Survivors include four sons, Denis O'Sullivan of Melbourne, Fla., Kieran O'Sullivan of Portland, Ore., Sean O'Sullivan of Cambridge, Mass., and Chris O'Sullivan of Cotaki, Calif.; four daughters, Rez O'Sullivan of Chico, Calif., Doreen O'Sullivan of New York City, Anne O'Sullivan of Atlanta, Ga., and Katie O'Sullivan Pittman of Ashland, Ore.; a sister, Regina Kinny of Louisville, Ky.; and four grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church, Main Street.
Calling hours will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the Langan Funeral Home, 227 Main St.
Burial will be in Old Stone Fort Cemetery.

Damian `Dewey' Gilchrist
WATERVLIET - Damian P. "Dewey" Gilchrist, 40, of Third Avenue, Watervliet and Birch Avenue, Lake George, died Tuesday at his Watervliet home after a long illness.
Born in Troy, Mr. Gilchrist resided in both Watervliet and Loudonville.
He was a 1979 graduate of Shaker High School.
Mr. Gilchrist was a computer technician for Frasier Associates in Rensselaer for a number of years. He was also a CAD operator for Besha Engineering in Guilderland and worked for Tri-City Foods in Watervliet.
Most recently, Mr. Gilchrist was a computer technician for Alliant Food Service in Clifton Park.
Survivors include his wife, Hazel Finn Gilchrist; a daughter, Noelle E. Gilchrist; a son, Damian J. Gilchrist; his mother, Eleanor Trimble Gilchrist of Watervliet; four brothers, John T. Gilchrist of Latham and David F., Mark R. and Evan F. Gilchrist, all of Watervliet; and a sister, Elizabeth G. Kelly of Discovery Bay, Calif.
Services will be held at 9 a.m. Friday at the Parker Bros. Memorial, 2013 Broadway, followed at 10 at St. Brigid's Church, where a Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated by Mr. Gilchrist's uncle, the Reverand Frank Gilchrist.
Burial will follow in Evergreen Cemetery, Lake George.
Calling hours are from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Anna M. Ruberti
GLOVERSVILLE - Mrs. Anna M. Ruberti, 77, of Yale Street, died at home Monday after being stricken.
Born and educated in Gloversville, Mrs. Ruberti was a lifelong area resident.
She was a glove sewer for the former C.J. Bachner Glove Co. for several years.
Mrs. Ruberti was a communicant of Sacred Heart Church.
Survivors include a brother, Albert P. Ruberti of Gloversville; and three sisters, Concetta Scoville and Ida T. Ruberti, both of Gloversville, and Jane Eaton of Johnstown.
A prayer service will be held at 8:30 a.m. Thursday at the John W. Finocan Funeral Home, 13 Prospect Ave., followed at 9 at Sacred Heart Church, where a Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated.
Calling hours will be from 5 to 8 tonight at the funeral home.
Burial will be in Mt. Carmel Cemetery, Johnstown.

Delmar `DJ' Wock
JOHNSTOWN - Delmar "DJ" Wock, who co-owned Wock's Luncheonette, died at home Monday after a long illness. Mr. Wock, of Old Trail Road, town of Mohawk, was 83.
He was an Army veteran of World War II.
Mr. Wock and his brother owned Wock's Luncheonette, first located at 100 W. Main St. and then at 21 W. Main St., until they retired in 1996.
Mr. Wock was a life member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles and was active with the Pine Tree Rifle Club for many years.
He was also elected as a write-in candidate to the Johnstown Water Board and served several terms.
Margaret "Peg" Quigley Wock, whom he married April 23, 1939, died in 1968.
Survivors include three sons, Kenneth Wock of Rexford, Patrick Wock of Broadalbin and William K. Wock of Johnstown; his brother, William C. Wock of the town of Mohawk; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
There are no services or calling hours. Burial will be private.

Edith Tracy
COBLESKILL - Mrs. Edith Dubois Tracy, who was president of the city council of PTAs in Albany, died Monday at the Eden Park Health Care Center, after a long illness. She was 93.
Born in Germantown, Pa., Mrs. Tracy had lived in Albany for many years before moving to Eden Park in 1994.
She was a graduate of Albany Academy for Girls and attended Skidmore College, where she was a member of the track and basketball teams.
Mrs. Tracy was a principal statistical clerk for the New York state Department of Education for 15 years, retiring in 1975.
She was vice chairman of the National Foundation of the March of Dimes. She was also a committee member of the Albany Pinkster Tulip Celebration.
Survivors include a daughter, Judith O'Connor of Cobleskill; a son, Robert D. Tracy of Colorado; 10 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Robert A. Guffin Funeral Home, 1 Chapel St.
A calling hour will precede the service at the funeral home.
Burial will be in Albany Rural Cemetery.

Edward Elias
SARATOGA SPRINGS - Edward M. Elias, who founded and served as a director of Penn State University's York Campus, died Tuesday at home after a long illness. Mr. Elias, of Spring Street, was 73.
Mr. Elias was born in Easton, Pa.
He received a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from Lafayette College and a master of arts degree from the University of Maryland.
Mr. Elias was an administrator for Penn State University.
He was one of the first honorary alumni of Penn State.
In 1984, Mr. Elias was a recipient of the John E. Wilkinson Award for Administrative Excellence.
He retired in 1985 after 35 years at the university.
Mr. Elias was a member of the National Racing Museum.
He was a Navy veteran and attended the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md.
Survivors include his wife, Evangeline B. Elias; a son, Michael E. Elias of Brookline, Mass.; a daughter, Rosalind A. Singh of Palm Harbor, Fla.; two stepdaughters, Leigh N. Newbaker-Smith of Stockton, N.J., and Barbara Lynne Lesko of Charleston, S.C.; a stepson, Kenneth J. Newbaker of Georgetown, Washington, D.C.; a sister, Ella M. Burnard of Lake Hauto, Pa.; three grandchildren; and two step-grandchildren.
A committal service at Saratoga National Cemetery, Schuylerville, will be held on Friday at a time to be announced by the Gordon C. Emerick Funeral Home, Clifton Park.
There are no calling hours.

Esther Kohn
CLIFTON PARK - Mrs. Esther Ostrowsky Kohn, who worked for the New York state Insurance Department in Albany for 17 years, died Tuesday at St. Peter's Hospital in Albany. Mrs. Kohn, of Overlook Pass, formerly of Albany and Delmar, was 90.
Born in Albany, Mrs. Kohn had lived in Chicago at one time.
She was a life member of Hadassah, a former member of Congregation Ohav Sholom in Albany and a member of United Order of True Sisters Abigail No. 3 in Albany.
Her husband, Moses Kohn, died in 1991.
Survivors include two daughters, Paula Bloch of Clifton Park and Tema Kohn of White Plains; a brother, Sidney Osten of Rochester; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Services will be held at 11 this morning at the Ohav Sholom Cemetery, Church Road, Guilderland.
The period of mourning will be observed through Sunday evening at 105A Overlook Pass.

Harry Leffler
ROCKLEDGE, Fla. - Harry K. Leffler, 72, of Rockledge, Fla., died at home Friday.
Born in Troy, Mr. Leffler moved to Florida in 1987.
He was an Army veteran of the Korean War, serving as a demolitions expert.
Mr. Leffler retired from the Watervliet Arsenal in 1984. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 10097.
Survivors include his wife of 46 years, Ann Leffler; two daughters, Sandra Schuch of Rockledge and Lori Jewett of Fort Myers, Fla.; a son, William Leffler of Washington, D.C.; two sisters, Ida Mae O'Bryan of Troy and Rosemond Mahoney of Clearwater, Fla.; and four grandchildren.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 10, at St. Mary's Church in Rockledge.

Margaret Crouse
GUILDERLAND - Private services will be held for Miss Margaret E. Crouse, 87, formerly of Washington, D.C., who died Saturday at the Guilderland Center Nursing Home after being stricken.
Born in Van Hornesville, Miss Crouse moved to Guilderland in 1920. She was a graduate of Milne High School and Mildred Elley Secretarial School.
She was a secretary for several Albany area businesses, including the Civil Aeronautics Administration. She held an administrative secretarial position with World Bank, travelling throughout Europe and Asia. She retired in 1976.
Survivors include a brother, Stuart H. Crouse of McKownville.
Burial will be in Memory's Garden, Colonie.

Thomas Mahan, Sr.
RENSSELAER - Thomas C. Mahan, Sr., 78, of Grandview Drive, died Monday at Memorial Hospital in Albany.
Born in North Albany, Mr. Mahan had lived in Albany for more than 20 years. He also lived in North Greenbush for more than 40 years and had lived in Rensselaer for the past four years.
He delivered bread for the Freihofer Baking Co. and newspapers for the Albany Times Union. He was a cab driver for Al's Taxi Co. He worked for the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America, Local 117, from 1957 until his retirement in 1975.
Mr. Mahan was a member of the Guilderland Elks for 25 years and had been a member of the Troy Elks Lodge 141 for the past two years. He was a member of the Tri City Singles.
Survivors include three daughters, Ann Malatesta and Nadine H. Mahan, both of Rensselaer, and Marialana Sapienza of Latham; four sons, Thomas C. Mahan, Jr. of Guilderland, Peter J. Mahan of Berne, William T. Mahan of East Greenbush and Sante L. Mahan of Delmar; a brother, Joseph Mahan of Latham; 19 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and his companion, Jane Blackman of Schenectady.
Services will be held at 8 a.m. Thursday at the Parker Brothers Memorial, 2013 Broadway, Watervliet, followed at 9 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church, North Albany, where a Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated.
Calling hours will be from 4 this afternoon until 8 tonight at the funeral home.
Burial will be in St. Agnes Cemetery, Menands.
