Chris Wheland, WWII vet, was awarded 2 battle stars
LANSINGBURGH - Chris W. Wheland, who was an Army Air Forces veteran of World War II, died Tuesday at Samari- tan Hospital in Troy after a short illness. Mr. Wheland, of Fifth Avenue, was 77.
Born in Troy, Mr. Wheland was a lifelong resident. He graduated from Lansingburgh High School in 1941.
He had been a self-employed general contractor in the area since 1945.
He served 17 months in Europe during World War II. He was awarded two battle stars.
Mr. Wheland was an active member of United Methodist Church of Lansingburgh. He served as a trustee, chairman of finance, member of the administrative council, president and treasurer of the Men's Club, adviser to the group house chairman and church property, senior deacon and head usher. He also attended the local church council conference as lay leader.
He was a charter member of Lansingburgh Kiwanis Club and a member of the local scouting committee. He served as chairman of local Cub Pack 19 and Scout troop committeeman.
Mr. Wheland was active in Masonic circles. He was master and secretary of Jerusalem Masonic Lodge 355 on two occasions. He served on many lodge committees, was district chairman of the brotherhood fund and president of the Lansingburgh Masonic Temple Association. He was a member of Phoenix Chapter No. 133, RAM Bloss Council No. 14 and Iran Grotto.
He was a 32nd-degree Mason, and a member of Troy Delta Bodies, the Albany Consistory, the Oriental Shrine, Troy Shrine Club, Troy Shrine Patrol and captain of the guard of the Rose Crois Troy Delta Degree Team. He also served as worthy patron in the Court of the Amaranth. In 1990, he was grand representative of Turkey to the Grand Lodge of the state of New York.
Survivors include his wife, Julia Aird Wheland; two sons, John C. Wheland of Clifton Park and Glenn C. Wheland of Troy; a brother, Richard A. Wheland of Troy; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
A service will be held at 9 a.m. Friday at the Bryce Funeral Home, corner of Pawling and Maple avenues in Troy.
Calling hours are 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Burial will be in Saratoga National Cemetery.

Eugene Winters, 97, artist, works displayed in galleries
BROOKLINE, Mass. - Eugene Winters, who worked in display and commercial design and as a fine artist, died on Tuesday. Mr. Winters, of Brookline, was 97.
Born in Vienna, Austria, Mr. Winters came to this country in 1939. He lived in Albany at one time.
He was a member of the Albany Artists Group. He was an abstract expressionist painter and glass artisan. His works were exhibited in many galleries and are in the permanent collections of the Corning Glass Museum, Toledo Museum of Art and the Albany Institute of History and Art.
He was the widower of Johanna Wiesinger Winters.
Survivors include two daughters, Dr. Lucy Sandler of Brookline and Terry Winters of Boston; a sister, Margaret Bauer of Marietta, Ga.; and two grandsons.
A graveside service will be held at 1 this afternoon at Memory's Garden, Colonie. A gathering will take place from 2:30 to 5:30 this afternoon at the Holiday Inn, 1442 Western Ave., Albany. A memorial observance will continue on Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday at the home of Drs. Lucy and Philip Sandler in Brookline.
Local arrangements are by the Levine Memorial Chapel, Albany.

Thomas F. Ryan, 91, was active in seniors' groups
JOHNSTOWN - Thomas F. Ryan, who served as president of the Johnstown 50 Plus Senior Citizens and the Ida McGinnis Seniors of Gloversville, died Tuesday at St. Mary's Hospital in Amsterdam after a short illness. Mr. Ryan, formerly of Trackside Homes, was 91.
Born in Brooklyn, Mr. Ryan was educated in New York City schools. He moved to Johnstown in 1977.
He worked for the Sinclair Oil Corp., which later became the Atlantic-Richfield Oil Co., for 44 years. He started out as a messenger and became assistant to the vice president for marketing.
Mr. Ryan was a member of the Johnstown 50 Plus Senior Citizens and the Ida McGinnis Seniors of Gloversville, serving as president of both organizations. He was the treasurer of the Trackside Tenants Group.
He was a member of Immaculate Conception Church.
His wife, Agnes Davis Ryan, whom he married in 1932, died in 1995.
Survivors include a daughter, Mary Muller of Palmyra, Va.; a son, Robert Ryan of Bedford; eight grandchildren; and a great-grandson.
Services will be held Thursday at 10:30 a.m. at the Barter & Donnan Funeral Home, 1 N. Melcher St., and at 11 at Immaculate Conception Church, where a Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated.
Calling hours are 2 to 4 this afternoon and 6 to 8 tonight at the funeral home.
Spring burial will be in St. Patrick's Cemetery.

Edward Bilodeau, veteran, taught at two local schools
ALTAMONT - Edward H. Bilodeau, who taught at Altamont Elementary School and the Guilderland Middle School, died Monday at home after a long illness. Mr. Bilodeau, of Fairview Avenue, was 76.
Born in Littleton, N.H., Mr. Bilodeau was a graduate of Plymouth State Teachers College.
He taught elementary school in Franconia, N.H., and Littleton, N.H., before moving to Altamont in 1962.
Mr. Bilodeau was an Army veteran of World War II, serving with the 10th Mountain Division. He was a member of the Boyd Hilton Veterans of Foreign Wars Post and the Helderberg American Legion Post.
He was a communicant of St. Lucy's Church.
Survivors include a son, Paul Bilodeau; and two daughters, Judy and Penelope Bilodeau.
A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Lucy's Church, Grand Street.

Mary Vassilliw
COBLESKILL - Private services will be held for Mrs. Mary Vassilliw, 85, of Campus Drive, who died Tuesday at Bassett Healthcare in Cooperstown after a long illness.
Born in Manhattan, Mrs. Vassilliw lived in Sunnyside, Queens, before moving to the Cobleskill area in 1980. She was a graduate of Washington Irving High School in New York City.
Mrs. Vassilliw was a member of St. Christopher Episcopal Church.
She was a volunteer with the ladies auxiliary of the former Community Hospital of Schoharie County.
Her husband, George Vassilliw, died in 1976.
Survivors include a son, John G. Vassilliw of New York City.
Burial will be in Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery.

Ronald E. Marl
NORTH PORT, Fla. - Ronald E. Marl, who was a finance officer for the state of New York before retiring in 1989, died Sunday in Port Charlotte, Fla. Mr. Marl, of North Port, was 49.
Mr. Marl was born in Ellenville and lived in Schenectady before moving to Florida 10 years ago.
Survivors include his wife, Denise M. Marl; a daughter, Danamarie E. Marl of North Port; a son, Jerrod A. Marl of North Port; his mother, Miliru Parker of Punta Gorda, Fla.; and a granddaughter.
A service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Farley Funeral Home's North Port Chapel.
Calling hours are 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral chapel.

Ruth J. Young
GLOVERSVILLE - Mrs. Ruth J. Young, formerly of Gloversville, died Sunday at the Fulton County Residential Health Care Facility.
Born and educated in Gifford Valley, Mrs. Young was a lifelong area resident.
She was a glove maker for various glove companies in the area and later retired from the Grandoe Glove Corp. in 1990.
Mrs. Young was a former member of the Rebekah Lodge.
Her husband, George Young, died in 1976.
Survivors include two daughters, Anna Javarone and Harriet Semprevio, both of Gloversville; nine grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.
There are no services or calling hours.
A graveside service will be held in the spring at Prospect Hill Cemetery.
Cremation took place at the Leatherstocking Crematory, Cherry Valley.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Fulton County Residential Health Care Facility or to charity.

Patricia Bradley
COLUMBIA, S.C. - Mrs. Patricia Guevin Bradley, who was an administrative assistant with the Youth Ministry Department of Columbia International University, died on Sunday. Mrs. Bradley, of Columbia, was 61.
Mrs. Bradley was born in Schenectady.
She was a member of the Columbia Crossroads Church.
Mrs. Bradley was a licensed practical nurse in Guam at one time.
Survivors include her husband, Stephen Ralph Bradley; six sons, Peter Bradley of Longview, Texas, David Bradley of Orlando, Fla., Mark Bradley of Colorado Springs, Colo., Philip Bradley of Columbia, Matthew Bradley of the RAF, stationed at Lakenheath, England, and Paul Bradley of St. Paul, Minn.; her mother, Margaret Thomas Guevin of Reno, Nev.; a brother, John H. Guevin, Jr. of Reno; two sisters, Joan Garling of Powder Springs, Ga., and Diane Lopez of Las Vegas, Nev.; and 11 grandchildren.
The service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Andrew's Evangelical Church, 2609 Seminole Road. Calling hours will be from 6 to 8 tonight at the Dunbar Funeral Home, Dutch Fork Chapel.
Burial will be in Bush River Memorial Gardens.

Mary Kouary
ALBANY - Mrs. Mary Koney Kouary, who was a bookkeeper for Fleet Bank of Albany before retiring in 1980, died Saturday at a facility in Vineland. Mrs. Kouary, of Vineland, N.J., formerly of Albany, was 84.
Mrs. Kouary was born in Albany and lived there for most of her life. She moved to Vineland nearly two years ago.
Mrs. Kouary was a member of St. Sophia's Greek Orthodox Church in Albany.
She was the widow of Charles H. Kouary.
Survivors include several nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at Graceland Cemetery. A luncheon will be held after the service at St. Sophia's Greek Orthodox Church, 440 Whitehall Road.

Diane L. Mersincavage
WARNERVILLE - Ms. Diane L. Mersincavage, 41, of West Fulton Road, died Monday at the Bassett Healthcare Facility in Cooperstown after a long illness.
Born in New York City, Ms. Mersincavage lived in Howes Cave and in Lindenhurst before moving to Warnerville in 1990. She was a graduate of New Hyde Park High School in Long Island.
She worked for the Castro Convertible Co. many years ago. She was also a homemaker.
Ms. Mersincavage was a member of the Adullam Full Gospel Church.
Survivors include two sons, Joseph M. and Peter S. Gaida, both of Warnerville; her companion of 19 years, Joseph P. Gaida; a sister, Joanne Gentile of Mantua, N.J.; and a brother, Robert Mersincavage of Walton.
The services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the Langan Funeral Home, 21 N. Main St., Central Bridge. Calling hours will be from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Burial will be in Sloansville Valley Cemetery, Sloansville.
