John Patierno
SCHENECTADY - John P. Patierno, 98, of Oakland Avenue, died Tuesday at St. Clare's Hospital after a short illness.
Born in Alvingnion, Italy, Mr. Patierno lived in Schenectady since he was a young child.
For 49 years, he was a machinist for the General Electric Co., retiring in 1965.
Mr. Patierno was a member of the GE Quarter Century Club.
He also was a longtime communicant of St. Anthony's Church and a member of its Holy Name Society.
His wife, Michelina "Maggie" Isabella Patierno, died in 1972.
Survivors include two sons, Arthur D. and George W. Patierne both of Schenectady; a brother, Patsy Patierne of Glenville; six grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-granddaughter.
Services will be at 10:15 a.m. Friday at the Griswold Funeral Home, 1867 State St., and at 11 a.m. at St. Anthony's Church, where a Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated.
Burial will be in St. Anthony's Cemetery, Glenville.
Calling hours will be 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home, during which the Holy Name Society will meet at 6 to conduct a service.

Johnny Roventini, advertising icon
WHITE PLAINS - Johnny Roventini, the pint-size bellboy who became one of the best-known figures in American advertising by shouting "Call for Philip Morris," has died. He was 88.
Roventini died Monday at Good Samaritan Hospital in Suffern, said a nephew, Philip Roventini. The cause of death had not been determined. Roventini had lived with a brother in Chestnut Ridge for the last year after spending all his life in Brooklyn.
In 1933, Roventini was 22 and being promoted by the New Yorker Hotel as "the smallest bellboy in the world" at 48 inches tall when he met advertising man Milton Biow, who had an idea for a cigarette ad. Biow gave him a dollar "to locate Philip Morris."
"I had no idea that Philip Morris was a cigarette," he said later, and he strode through the hotel, shouting "Call for Philip Morrees."
That began a career that brought Roventini a lifetime contract and a salary of up to $50,000 - fabulous at the time. He was heard on popular live radio programs and on some of the most-watched television shows of the 1950s and 1960s, including "I Love Lucy," "Candid Camera" and the Red Skelton and Jackie Gleason shows.
Roventini, who was born into an immigrant Italian family, lived with his mother until she died in the 1960s and never married.

Leonard Marciniak
AMSTERDAM - Leonard J. Marciniak, 75, of Jewett Street, died Tuesday at Amsterdam Memorial hospital after a long illness.
Born in Amsterdam, Mr. Marciniak was a 1941 graduate of the Wilbur H. Lynch High School.
He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II and attended Arkansas State College while in the service.
Mr. Marciniak worked for the Bigelow-Sanford Carpet Mills for 15 years and later for Sears and Roebuck Co. in Amsterdam. Subsequently, he was employed at the store's Colonie location for 29 years where he was the manager of the print and sign shop. He retired in 1985.
Survivors include his wife, Filomena "Mena" Sarra Marciniak, whom he married May 4, 1947; two sons, Richard L. Marciniak of Schoharie and Robert J. Marciniak of Amsterdam; and four grandchildren.
The services will be held at 9:15 a.m. Friday at the Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, 171 Guy Park Ave., and at 10 a.m. a Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Roman Catholic Church.
Calling hours will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Burial will be in Mt. Carmel Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary's Hospital Foundation or Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church.

Linda Garber
GLOVERSVILLE - Mrs. Linda Clark Garber, 56, of West Fulton Street Extension, died Monday at Amsterdam Memorial Hospital.
Born in Springville, Erie County, Mrs. Garber was raised in Wellsville, Allegheny County and was a 1960 graduate of Wellsville High School.
She was a nurse's aide at Nathan Littauer Hospital during the mid to late 1960s and also at the Fulton County Infirmary from 1977 to 1986. She was a private duty nurse until 1994, when she retired due to the onset of illness.
Mrs. Garber was a member of St. James Lutheran Church.
Survivors include her husband, Richard A. Garber, whom she married Oct. 5, 1968; three sons, Francis D. "Butch" McCracken, Jr. of Gloversville, Michael E. McCracken of Connecticut and Matthew R. Garber of Gloversville; a stepdaughter, Kathy J. Garber-Gibson of Gloversville; a stepson, Richard J. Garber of Gloversville; a sister, Garri Jeannene Fredrickson of Dansville; and seven grandchildren.
A service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Walrath & Bushouer Funeral Home, 51 Fremont St.
Calling hours will be from 2 to 4 this afternoon and 7 to 9 tonight at the funeral home.
Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Fonda.

Michaline Yurchuk
AMSTERDAM - Mrs. Michaline Yurchuk, 84, of Van Derveer Street, died Tuesday at Amsterdam Memorial hospital.
Born in Mikulyntsi, Ukraine, Mrs. Yurchuk was educated in Ukraine. She came to the Utica area in 1953 and later settled in Amsterdam.
Mrs. Yurchuk was a homemaker.
She was a member of St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church.
Her husband, Miroslav Yurchuk, whom she married Nov. 2, 1939, died August 28.
Survivors include a son, Irenaeus J. Yurchuk of Livingston, N.J.; and three grandchildren.
The services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Guzielek-Pomykaj Funeral Home, 13 Belmont Place, and at 11 a.m. a Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church.
Calling hours will be from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home, during which a Panachada service will be held at 7:30.
Burial will be in St. Nicholas Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Orphans in Ukraine Scholarship Fund in care of the funeral home.

Mildred Myers
JOHNSTOWN - Mrs. Mildred Myers, 92, of Fort Myers Beach, Fla., formerly of Johnstown, died Monday at Marriott Caluso Harbour, Fort Myers, after a long illness.
Born in Amsterdam, Mrs. Myers lived most of her life in the Johnstown area before moving to Florida in 1996.
For 20 years, she was a cafeteria worker in Johnstown schools, retiring in 1970.
Mrs. Myers was a member of Southwest Baptist Church in Fort Myers Beach and Hoosic Valley Community Church in Schaghticoke. She was a former member of the First Baptist Church in Johnstown, where she was a primary Sunday school teacher for many years.
Her husband, Chauncey L. Myers, whom she married April 4, 1931, died in 1989.
Survivors include two daughters, Sandra McElroy of Fort Myers Beach and Carol Green of Spencerport; a brother, Charles Holdorf of Cooperstown; seven grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the A.G. Cole Funeral Home, 215 E. Main St.
Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Fonda.
There will be no calling hours.

Nina Watkins
SHUSHAN - Mrs. Nina Jackson Watkins, 88, died Monday at home.
A lifelong Shushan resident, Mrs. Watkins was a graduate of Salem High School and earned a teaching certificate from Oneonta Normal School.
For many years, she taught elementary grades at Cambridge Central School, retiring in 1971.
Mrs. Watkins was a longtime member of Shushan United Methodist Church.
She also was a member and past matron of the Cambridge Valley Chapter Order of the Eastern Star; a member of the New York State Retired Teachers Association; a longtime member of the Shushan Grange; a member of the Mary McClellan Hospital Auxiliary; and a volunteer at Cambridge and Salem schools.
Her husband, Edgar Watkins, died in 1964.
Survivors include three daughters, Marcia Logan of Redmond, Ore., Mary Ellen Nevin of Schenectady and Jane Grant of New Hartford; a sister, Eleanor Shaw of Shushan; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Friday at the Shushan United Methodist Church.
Burial will be private in Woodlands Cemetery, Cambridge.
Calling hours will be 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the Ackley & Ross Funeral Home, 73 W. Main St., Cambridge, during which the OES will conduct a service at 5.

Raymond J. Oare
GLOVERSVILLE - Raymond J. Oare, 66, of Gloversville, died Monday in Manning, S.C., after a long illness.
Born in Gloversville, Mr. Oare served with the Air Force as a gunner and precision photo operator from 1952 to 1974 when he retired.
Later for 12 years, he worked for the Gloversville and Johnstown Joint Wastewater and Treatment Facilities, retiring in 1988.
Mr. Oare was of the Roman Catholic faith.
Survivors include his wife, Ruth Lair Oare, whom he married May 26, 1951; a daughter, Susan Martin of Grafton, Va.; a son, Steven Oare of Gloversville; six sisters, Ethel Ambrosino and Phylis Oare, both of Gloversville, Mary Smith of Johnstown, Gloria Dygert and Marilyn Fredericks, both of Palatine Bridge, and Jean Wohegemuth of Fort Plain; three brothers, James Oare of Gloversville, John Oare of Portsmouth, Va., and Paul Oare of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; and four grandchildren.
A service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the A.G. Cole Funeral Home, 215 E. Main St., Johnstown.
Burial will be in Fern Dale Cemetery, Johnstown.
Calling hours will be 9 to 11 a.m. Thursday, prior to the service at the funeral home.

Ruth Gage Lambert
SCHENECTADY - Mrs. Ruth Gage Lambert, 84, of DeWitt Street, formerly of Gage Road, Delanson, died Monday at the Hallmark Nursing Center in Rotterdam.
Born in Delanson, Mrs. Lambert lived there until moving to Schenectady in 1990. She was a graduate of Delanson High School.
Mrs. Lambert and her husband operated a dairy farm in Delanson until she became a nurse's aide at the Glendale Home. She worked at the home for 10 years, retiring in 1968. She later provided private home care.
She was a member of the former Duane Grange and attended the Annie Schaffer Senior Citizens Center in Schenectady.
Mrs. Lambert was a member of Trinity Reformed Church in Rotterdam.
Her husband, J. Austin Lambert, died in 1990.
Survivors include two daughters, Patricia O'Clair of Rotterdam and Mildred Fink of Schenectady; eight grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
The service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at the White-Van Buren Funeral Home, 1779 Main St., Delanson.
Calling hours will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Spring burial will be in Esperance Cemetery.

Ruthann Cohen
ALBANY - Miss Ruthann Cohen, 56, of Arborwood Drive, Burlington, Mass., died of breast cancer Monday at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.
Miss Cohen was born in Albany. A teacher, she began her career in the Ravena-Coeymans school system.
She moved to Boston and taught at the elementary level in the Lexington school system for 28 years.
Survivors include a brother, Marvin Cohen of Albany; and her companion, Richard Rosengard of Haverhill, Mass.
A service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at the Levine Memorial Chapel, 649 Washington Ave.
Burial will follow in Temple Israel Cemetery, Guilderland.
