ANDOVER - Bernard William Burger, 75, of 26 Dyke St., died Thursday (Nov. 21, 2002) at Jones Memorial Hospital in Wellsville.
Born July 10, 1927, in Elm Valley, he was a son of William G. and Isabel Wereley Burger. In 1953 he married Rose Mary Baker of Andover, who died Dec. 22, 1980. On Jan. 28, 1984, he married Emogene Blank of Wellsville, who survives.
A graduate of Andover Central School, he served with the U.S. Army. Mr. Burger spent more than 50 years in the milk industry, working as a manager at the Sunnydale Farms plant in Andover and at Sunnydale’s plant in Galeton, Pa. He was also plant manager for Detrick Milk in Middlebury Center, Pa., retiring in 1993.
He was a member of the Andover Blessed Sacrament Church, Andover Lions Club, Andover Golden Agers and a former member of the Andover Volunteer Fire Department.
Surviving besides his wife Emogene are a son, George (Patricia) Burger of Asburn, Va.; two stepsons, Peter (Leslie) Blank and Bruce (Michelle) Blank, both of Andover; three grandchildren; one great-grandchild; many nieces and nephews; a brother, Robert (Marjorie) Burger of Hornell; two sisters, Phyllis (Edward) Wilson of Andover and Janet (James) Appier of Big Flats; and a sister-in-law, Kathy Burger of Big Flats.
He was predeceased by a brother, Donald Burger in 2001.
Friends were received Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Mulholland-Swan Funeral Home Inc. in Andover. A Mass of Christian Burial was held Monday. (Nov. 25, 2002) at 10 a.m. at the Andover Blessed Sacrament Church. The Rev. Dennis Wolf of the Immaculate Conception Church of Wellsvile officiated. Burial was at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Andover.
Memorials may be made to the Andover Volunteer Fire Department, the Andover. Volunteer Rescue Squad or Andover Blessed Sacrament Church.
WELLSVILLE - Joan L. Edwards, 72, of 110 Williams Ave. died Wednesday (Nov. 20, 2002) in St. James Mercy Hospital, Hornell.
Born Jan. 7, 1930, in Detroit, Mich., she was a daughter of Walter and Margaret Keller Wittmann. On Nov. 8, 1952, in Wellsville, she married Richard “Dick” Edwards, who survives.
Mrs. Edwards graduated from Wellsville High School and Bryant & Stratton in Buffalo.
She worked for the former First Trust Union Bank and retired from Fleet Bank after 25 years of service.
She was active for many years in the Wellsville Women’s Bowling Association and was a Red Cross volunteer and served as a disaster chairman. She was a life member of the Wellsville Firemen’s Auxiliary and a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and Women of the Moose.
Surviving besides her husband of 50 years are a son, Michael (Linda) Edwards of Scio; two granddaughters, Vicki and Jaci Edwards; two sisters, Eleanor (Jack) Mann of Mt. Morris and Marjorie Phillips of Dayville, Conn.; and several nieces and nephews.
Friends called at the J.W Embser Sons Funeral Home Inc., Wellsville, Saturday (Nov. 23, 2002) from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., at which time funeral services were held. The Rev. Glen Layfield officiated. Burial was in Woodlawn Cemetery, Wellsville.
Memorials may be made to St. James Dialysis Unit, 411 Canisteo St., Hornell, NY 14843; or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
SHONGO - James H. House, 75, of Route 19, Shongo, died Sunday (Nov. 24, 2002) at home surrounded by his family.
Born Aug. 24, 1927, in Cuba, he was a son of Fred H. and Ada Graves House. On July 18, 1946, in Red Bank, N.J., he married Margaret McNeil, who survives.
Mr. House graduated from Wellsville High School in 1944 and entered the U.S. Army in 1946.
He had been employed by Air Preheater and later worked for the village of Wellsville, where he retired in 1989.
Mr. House was a member of Sacred Heart Church and enjoyed auctions and lawn sales.
Surviving besides his wife are a son, Fredrick M. (Linda) House of West Seneca; four daughters, Candace (Darryl) MacTavish of Wellsville, Lorraine (Edward) Vossler of Brentwood, Tenn., Debra House of Tampa, Fla., and Teresa (Kevin) Graham of Odessa, Fla.; seven grandchildren; a brother, Thomas (Marie) House of Wysox, Pa.; and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by a granddaughter, Heather MacTavish.
Friends called Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at.the J.W. Embser Sons Funeral Home Inc., Wellsville. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Wednesday (Nov. 27, 2002) at 11 a.m. in Sacred Heart Church, Genesee, Pa., with Father Brian Vossler as celebrant. Burial was in Yorks Corners Cemetery.
Memorials maybe made to the American Cancer Society or the Wellsville Volunteer Ambulance Corps.
ANDOVER - Douglas D. Miller Sr., 60, of 9 Baker St., died Sunday (Nov. 24, 2002) at the home of his daughter in Dawsonville, Ga., following a long illness.
Born Oct. 25, 1942 in Mount Union, Pa., he was the son of Elmer F. and Gladys Miller. He was married Dec. 5, 1964 in Andover to Nancy M. DeRemer, who survives.
Doug served in the US Navy aboard the USS Dehaven during the Vietnam conflict. He was a parts manager for Dresser Rand Corp., Wellsville, retiring May 1, 2002, with 36 years service. He was an avid golfer, hunter and fisherman.
Doug had resided most of his life in Andover, where he was a member of Lynch Burgett Post #397, American Legion, Andover Fire Department and the Andover Rescue Squad.
He is survived by two daughters, Melanie (Greg) Smith, Dawsonville, Ga., and Annette (Kevin) Perry, Andover; three sons, Michael (Cathy) DeRemer, Richmond, Va.; Doug Miller Jr. and Eric Miller, both of Andover; 12 grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and cousins; and two loving dogs.
The family received friends from 2-3:30 p.m. Friday at the Robertson Funeral Home, Inc., Hornell, where funeral services were held 7:30 p.m. Friday evening, with Rev. Brian, Diffenbacher officiating. Lynch Burgett Post #397 conducted an American Legion memorial service at the conclusion of calling hours at 3:30 p.m. Friday. Burial was in Hillside Cemetery, Andover.

BOLIVAR - Laura Mae Miller, God’s faithful servant, desiring all to know salvation through Jesus Christ, died Tuesday (Nov. 26, 2002) at her home after a courageous battle with cancer.
Born Nov. 2, 1948, in Warren, Pa., she was a daughter of Jack and Iva Silsby Hurd. Mrs. Miller was lovingly nurtured through her youth by Maybelle Hamilton. On Dec. 12, 1964, in Little Genesee, she married Daniel L. Miller, who survives.
Mrs. Miller was a loving wife, mother and grandmother.
She was employed as a school bus driver by Bolivar-Richburg Central School for 24 years.
Mrs. Miller was a faithful servant of the Lord at numerous religious organizations. She traveled on several church mission trips to the Philippines, Alaska, Mexico and Scotland. She faithfully touched many lives with her love and knowledge of Jesus Christ.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by four sons, Mark (Nanette) Miller of Oklahoma City Okla., Bradley Miller of Austin, Texas, Brian (Marife) Miller of Atlanta and Jeffrey (Kellie) Miller of Weston’s Mills; a daughter, Lori Miller of Bolivar; eight grandchildren, Matthew, Megan, Michael, Anthony, Kevin, Kailynn, Krystalee and Keenan; and four brothers, Laverne Chadderdon of Bolivar, David (Alice) Silsby of Geneva, Tex (Judy) Hurd of Bolivar and Tony Hurd of Little Valley.
She was predeceased by her father, Jack Hurd; and Maybelle Hamilton Silsby.
Friends called at the Schaffner Funeral Home Inc., Bolivar, Friday from 2 to 4 pm and 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral services were held Saturday (Nov. 30, 2002) at 2 p.m. in the Faith Bible Church, Little Genesee, with the Rev. David Herne officiating. Burial was in Maple Lawn Cemetery, Bolivar.
Memorials may be made to Camp Penuel, (a summer camp for underprivileged children), c/o Heritage AFlame Ministries, 647 S. Union St., Olean, NY 14760.
CUBA - Rockwell Lyman Stafford of 5441 Route 305, Cuba, died Wednesday (Nov. 20, 2002) in Charles Cole Memorial Hospital, Coudersport, Pa., following a short illness.
Born in North Union, Pa., on Aug. 17, 1911, he was a son of Thomas and Sara Salena Bassett Stafford. On Aug. 16, 1942, in Cuba, he married Mary A. Smith, who died Nov. 13, 1999.
Mr. Stafford owned and operated a dairy farm on Route 305 at the corner of Crabb Hollow Road for many years prior to his retirement. He also drove school bus for the former Cuba Central School.
In addition to farming, he built four homes, two in Cuba and two in New Hudson, and remodeled one on the South Shore Road.
Mr. Stafford was a member of the First Baptist Church of Cuba and was a former church trustee. He also belonged to the Dairymen’s League, Cornell Cooperative Extension and Cuba Grange 799 where he was a 73-year member and received the Golden Sheaf Membership on Jan 14, 1984. He was a past member of the former Cuba Central School Board.
Surviving are six children, Sharon M. Peale of Cuba, Linda J. (Jack) McCutcheon of Albuquerque, N.M., John T. (Barbara) Stafford of Sarasota, Fla., Lois A. (Mark) Berry- Whitson of St. Clairsville, Ohio, Dennis G. (Rosalie) Stafford of Salem, N.H., and Lucinda K. Stafford of Bellingham, Wash.; 13 grandchildren; three great- grandchildren; two brothers, Howard Stafford of Ravemia, Ohio, and Larry Stafford of Daytona, FIa.; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by two sisters, Alice Buell and Orael Gersten.
Friends were received Saturday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.. at the McIntosh Funeral Home (Nicholson Chapel), 24 Genesee Parkway, Cuba, where funeral services were held Sunday (Nov. 24, 2002) at 2 p.m. The Rev. Larry A. Poelma of the First Baptist Church of Cuba officiated. Burial was in Cuba Cemetery.
Members of Cuba Grange 799 conducted a Service of Remembrance Saturday at 7 p.m. in the funeral home.
