JACK STOCUM
BELFAST - Jack Stocum, 75, of 7070 C Gleason Hill Road died Tuesday (Nov. 26, 2002) at The Waters of Houghton Nursing Care Center following a lengthy illness.
Born Jan. 14, 1927, in West Pike, Pa., he was a son of Clifford and Ethel Carlin Stocum. He had been married to the former Barbara Trowbridge, who survives. On Dec. 20, 1982, he married the former Avanelle Hamer, who survives.
Mr. Stocum had lived most of his life in the Wellsvffle-Belfast areas and had attended Scio Central School.
He was employed for a short period of time on the Erie Railroad and in the Bolivar oil fields. It was at this time in his life that he served with the U.S. Marine Corpe during the Korean War.
For 32 years, Mr. Stocum was a pipe fitter at Dresser-Rand Co. in Olean, retiring in 1990.
He was an avid out-of-doors person. He loved being a fisherman, hunter and trapper, along with camping. Mr. Stocum enjoyed and loved being with his family.
He was a member of United Steelworkers Union Local 4601 of Olean.
Surviving besides his wife are a son, Jack E. (Anne) Stocum of Fairport; four daughters, Janet E. Haskell of Sturgis, Miss., Deborah (Tim) Miller of Cuba, Darlene E. Stocum of Pittsburgh, Pa., and Cindy (Dana) Harding of Hilton; five stepsons, Lester (Kathy) White of Endicott, Ricky (Sue) White of Black Creek, Gary (Deanna) White of Salamanca, Larry White of Black Creek and David (Norma) White of Whitney Point; two stepdaughters, Ann (Daniel) Rockwell of Little Valley and Kathy (Mike) Bump of Cuba; 24 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; three brothers, Doran (Ann) Stocum of Olean, Keith (Pat) Stocum of Pine Bluff, N.C., and Roger (Mary Jean) Stocum of Richburg, five sisters, Jane Ellsworth of Wellsville, Jill (Dorr) Dunbar of Holland, Brenda Whittaker and Dawn (Tom) Downs, both of Milton, Fla., and Dixie (Richard) Monroe of Bolivar; and several,nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by four sisters, Bertha Nobles, Elva Butler, Evelyn “Pat” Brown and Doris Pendleton.
Friends called Friday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Treusdell Funeral Home, Belfast, where funeral and committal services were held Saturday (Nov. 30, 2002) at 10 a.m. The Rev. Howard Lockwood of Belfast officiated. Burial wsa in Knights Creek Cemetery, Scio.

CANDACE M. WEDGE
WELLSVILLE - Candace M. Wedge, 49, of 14 Pine Street, Wellsville, died Wednesday (November 20, 2002) in Wellsville after a long illness.
She was born October 3, 1953 in Wellsville, NY a daughter of Donald and Anna (Halsey) Murray.
She was married to Loren Wedge who survives.
She was a lifelong resident of Wellsville attending Wellsville High School.
She was a nurses aid at Highland Health Care Center and at the Wellsville Manor.
She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary in Wellsville and the Women of the Moose in Wellsville.
Surviving in addition to her husband are, her father, Donald Murray of Wellsville, three sons, Robert (Georgia) Murray of Andover, Danny Patterson of Wellsville and Jason Patterson of Butner, NC, three brothers, Ronald Murray of Wellsville, Donald Murray of Fisher Island, and Steven Murray of Wellsville, two sisters, Connie Foster of Rochester and Kathy Jackson of Wellsville; four grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her mother Anna (Halsey) Murray, two nieces and one nephew.
A memorial service was conducted at 2 pm Sunday at the Mulholland-Crowell Funeral Home in Wellsville, with the Reverend Ralph Eastlack officiating.
The family suggests that memorials be made to the American Cancer Society.
CARL J. ANDERSON
PORTVILLE - Carl Joseph Gilbert Anderson, 89, a retired corporate executive, died Wednesday (Jan. 22, 2003) after a short illness.
Born in Portville on Nov. 1, 1913, he was the youngest of four children of the late Alma Christenson Anderson and the late Hans Jorgen Anderson.
Mr. Anderson graduated from Portville Union School in 1931 and went on to study music at The Eastman School of Music at University of Rochester. During college, he sang profesionally with the Lake Avenue Baptist Church Choir under the direction of Dr. Herbert Lehman. In 1938, he graduated from the Westbrook Commercial Academy in Olean, where he met his future wife, Ruth Olive Rottstedt. They were married on July 29, 1939, at the First Presbyterian Church in Portville.
Following graduation from Westbrook Commercial Academy, Mr. Anderson was hired by W.K. Paige & Co. of Olean as an accountant. He remained there until he was offered a position in the accounting department at Acme Electric and Manufacturing Co. in Cuba. Mr. Anderson served various posts with Acme, becoming chairman of the accounting department and retiring in 1976 as the corporation secretary of the board of directors.
During his career in finance with Acme, he was a member of the National Association of Accountants and an officer in the New York State Chapter.
He was a member of the Portville Central School Board of Education for several terms and also served several terms as a trustee, with the village of Portville. In the late 1940s, he also was the village clerk of Portville.
A lifelong Lutheran, he was a communicant member of Bethel Lutheran Church of Portville and an associate member of the Redeemer Lutheran Church in St. Petersburg, Fla. He served several terms on the Portville Bethel Lutheran Church Council, the board of trustees as well as presidencies of the Willing Workers and Men’s Associations. He was also a lifetime member of the Portville Fireman’s Club and Volunteer Fire Department.
In addition to other civic works, Mr. Anderson was the choirmaster and Director of Music at the First Presbyterian Church of Portville for 32 years where he also taught in the Sunday school. And, as a father, he served as scoutmaster for his sons’ Cub Scout troop.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, James Theodore Anderson of Reston, Va., and Richard (Lee) Anderson of Portville; a daughter, Christine (Terry) Anderson Walden of Portville; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by a daughter, Kathryn Ruth Anderson; and three siblings, Eleanor Anderson Roulo, Paul Theodore Anderson and Arlene Anderson Reed.
Friends called Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Guenther Funeral Home Inc., 51 S. Main St., Portvilie. Funeral services were held Saturday (Jan. 25, 2003) at 10 a.m. in Bethel Lutheran Church, Portville. Burial was in Chestnut Hill Cemetery, Portville.

ROBERT C. BROWN
BELMONT - Robert C. “Bob” Brown, 84, of 38 Willets Ave. died peacefully in his sleep on Tuesday (Jan. 28, 2003) after a courageous battle with cancer.
Born Oct. 4, 1918, in the town of Ward, he was a son of Andrew and Sarah Swift Brown. On June 2, 1945, in Franklinville, he married the former Maude S. “Blondie” Bowker, who survives.
Mr. Brown had resided most of his life in Tonawanda. He attended the Belmont rural school district.
For a short period of time was employed by Bethlehem Steel in Lackawanna. In 1942, he became employed at Columbus and McKinnon Corp. in Tonawanda where he eventually became foreman, retiring in 1982.
In September 1989, he and his family moved to Belmont. Mr. Brown enjoyed woodworking, gardening and horses. He also was a family man who loved being with his family.
Mr. Brown was a past member of the Salem United Church of Christ in Tonawanda, past member of the Moose Lodge in Abington, Va., and had been a member of the Eldredge Club of Tonawanda.
Surviving besides his wife are a son, Randy R. (Bobbi) Brown of Friendship; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by a son, Thomas Jeffery Brown; four brothers, Lewis Brown, Richard Brown, Frank Brown and Harold Brown; and a sister, Ruth Magee.
Friends called at the Treusdell Funeral Home, Friendship, Friday (Jan. 31, 2003) from noon to 4 p.m., at which time funeral and committal services were held. The Rev. Larry Poelma, pastor of the First Baptist Church in Cuba, officiated. Burial was in Maple Grove Cemetery Friendship.

HAROLD R. BUDINGER
BELMONT - Harold R. Budinger, 80, of 5739 Church Road died Friday (January 24, 2003) at the Erie County Medical Center in Buffalo.
He was born September 28, 1922 in South Dakota a son of Harry Budinger and Fannie Brownell Budinger.
He was married April 22, 1977, in Belmont, to Mabel Horton who survives.
Harold operated Budinger’s Wrecking in Belvedere for over 40 years. He later was employed by the Allegany County Green Thumb program for several years.
Surviving in addition to his wife are, 11 children, Harold (Monica) Budinger 111 of Angelica, Gerald (Shirley) Budinger of Michigan, Lillian Budinger of Friendship, Larry (Barb) Budinger of Arkansas, Allen Budinger of Friendship, Timothy Budinger of Tennessee, Betty-Jean (Dan) Smith of Tennessee, Aaron (Heather) Budinger of Tennessee, Donna Budinger of Friendship, Ronald (Paula) Budinger of Scio and Richard (Nicole) Budinger of Belmont, 26 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews, and his first wife Jean Lewis, of Friendship. He was predeceased by a son Robert Budinger, a granddaughter Beth Budinger and four brothers, Carl, Kenneth, Earnest, and Richard Budinger, two sisters Betty Beil and Doris Lewis.
Friends were invited to call on Tuesday from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the J.W. Embser Sons Funeral Home Inc. in Belmont. The funeral followed visitation at 3 p.m. Tuesday (January 28, 2003) in the funeral home. The Reverend Steve Rockey officiated. Burial was in Forest Hills Cemetery in Belmont.
