HAROLD C. CHURCH
ANGELICA - Harold C. Church, 94, of West Main Street died Thursday (Jan. 23, 2003) at the Wellsville Manor Care Center.
Born May 7, 1908, in West Union, he was a son of Charles and Mary Church. He was married to Gladys Riffle, who died in 1968. He later married the former Elizabeth “Betty” McKnight, who survives.
Mr. Church served in the U.S. Army during World War II, from 1942-45.
He had been employed at General Dynamics of Rochester as a security guard, retiring in 1968.
Mr. Church was a member of American Legion Post 414 in Angelica and a former member of the VFW Post in Silver Springs, Fla.
Surviving besides his wife are six stepsons, James (Nancy) Riffle of Lakeland, Fla., Earl (Joyce) Riffle of Melrose, Mass., Theodore (Martha) McKnight of Pleasant Hill, Tenn., Robert (Helen) McKnight of Almond, Roderick (Marie) McKnight of Angelica and Ronald (Denise) McKnight of Cleveland, Miss.; two stepdaughters, Phyllis (Tom) Loucks of Lady Lake, Fla., and Sandra McKnight of Angelica; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his first wife, he was predeceased by two step- sons, Claude Riffle and James McKnight; and eight brothers and sisters.
There was no prior calling hours. A funeral service was held Saturday (Jan. 25, 2003) at 1 p.m. in the Brown & Powers Funeral Home, 101 West Ave., Angelica, with the Rev. Jody Spiak officiating. Burial was in Hillside Cemetery Andover.

RICHARD J. CLARK JR.
BOLIVAR - Richard J. Clark Jr., 73, of 1011 Salt Rising Road died Thursday (Jan. 23, 2003) shortly after admission to Jones Memorial Hospital, Wellsville, after a long illness.
Born July 25, 1929, in Coudersport, Pa., he was a son of Richard and Edith Miller Clark Sr. On Sept. 14, 1952, in Little Genesee, he married the former Blanche Wedge, who survives.
Mr. Clark was a former employee of the Burrows Pipe and Steel Co. in Portville for 20 years, Cradduck Paving Co. of Portville, and Olean Steel Sales and Service.
Surviving besides his wife are two sons, Richard C. Clark and Ernest E. Clark, both of Bolivar; a daughter, Edie Cyphert of Bolivar; three grandchildren; three great- grandchildren; an aunt; and several nieces and nephews.
Friends called at the Schaffner Funeral Home Inc., Bolivar, Saturday (Jan. 25, 2003) from noon to 2 p.m., at which time funeral and committal services were held. The Rev. Gordon Lawton, pastor of the Little Genesee First Seventh Day Baptist Church, officiated. Burial was in Maple Lawn Cemetery, Bolivar.
EUGENE W. CLAYSON
CUBA - Eugene W. Clayson of 756 Carpenter Hill Road died Friday (Jan. 24, 2003) in the Erie County Medical Center, Buffalo, after a short illness.
Born in Olean on Dec. 25, 1925, he was a son of Hiram and Hattie Benjamin Clayson. On May 27, 1950, in the town of Lyndon he married Helen Milne, who survives.
Mr. Clayson was employed as a die setter at Acme Electric Corp. in Cuba before his retirement in 1990. He was a member of Hinsdale United Methodist Church.
He enjoyed woodworking and working on his truck.
Surviving in addition to his wife are a son, Matthew (Kathy) Clayson of Cuba; four daughters, Lois (Gary) Buffum, of Springville, Aileen (John) Eckam of Cuba, Cynthia Crawford of Cuba, and Marsha (Ted) Ingalls of Cuba; five grandchildren; five stepgrandchildren; and five stepgreat-grandchildren; a brother, Clarence (Virginia) Clayson of Cuba; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by nine brothers and six sisters.
Friends were received by the family at the McIntosh Funeral Home (Nicholson Chapel), 24 Genesee Parkway, Cuba, Sunday, Jan. 26, 2003 from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral services were held Monday (Jan. 27, 2003) at 11 a.m. at the funeral home. The Rev. Dr. Carl Schultz officiated.
Burial was in Maple Grove Cemetery, Friendship.

JANICE L. DAY
WELLSVILLE - Janice L. Day, 86, of Williams Grove Road died Thursday (Jan. 23, 2003) at the Wellsville Manor Care Center after a brief illness.
Born Aug. 26, 1916, she was a daughter of Lovell Baldwin and Gertrude Bader-Baldwin. On June 26, 1940, she married C. Harold Day of Belmont, who predeceased her May 7, 2000. They were married nearly 60 years.
A lifelong resident of Wellsville, Mrs. Day was a graduate of Wellsville High School and St. Francis Hospital School of Nursing.
As an adult in her 40s, she fulfilled her dream of becoming a nurse. After graduation, she was employed at St. James Hospital in Hornell, Jones Memorial Hospital in Wellsville and Hewett Nursing Home in Shinglehouse, Pa. She did some private-duty nursing for local residents as well.
She was an incredibly creative woman, excelling in drawing, calligraphy and story- telling. She also enjoyed painting and reading as well as quilting, needlepoint and other crafts. Mrs. Day was active in various historical societies and traveled extensively as a genealogist and antique expert. She loved animals and delighted in spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Surviving are her five children, Joyce Day of Washington, D.C., Jeanne White of Rochester, Jeanette Paluzzi of Scranton, Pa., Jayni Marie Day of Wellsville and Jim Day of Andover; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and many nephews and nieces including Rosaire Brundage of Andover.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by two sisters, Phyllis Baldwin and Alice Horn of Wellsville.
Friends called at the Mulholland-Crowell Funeral Home, Wellsville, Saturday (Jan. 25, 2003) from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., at which time funeral services were held. The Rev.
Ralph Eastlack officiated. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.
MARVIN K. DERHAMMER
WHITESVILLE - Marvin K. Derhammer, 86, of 436 Park Ave., Whitesville, died Monday (Jan. 27, 2003) at the Wellsville Manor Nursing Home.
Born June 5, 1915, in Seville, Ohio, he was a son of Clyde and Ada Rohrer Derhammer. On Dec. 8, 1945, in the Whitesville United Methodist Church, he married the former Ruth Robbins, who survives.
Mr. Derhammer grew up in the Cuba area and graduated from Cuba High School.
He was employed for over 40 years by Turbodyne/Dresser-Rand in Wellsville and was a member of the Dresser-Rand Management Club.
Mr. Derhammer was a former president of the school boards of Whitesville Central School and Allegany County BOCES. He was a former chief of the Whitesville Fire Department and Allegany County Fire Association; was a 16-gallon American Red Cross blood donor and a former board member of the Allegany County Chapter of the Red Cross; served on the Jones Memorial Hospital Board of Directors; was a member of the town of Independence Ambulance Corps; and held many important positions in the Whitesville United Methodist Church, inducing chairman of the administrative board, trustee and lay leader. He was an active caretaker of the Methodist church and was a member of the Andover Masonic Lodge.
Surviving besides his wife are two daughters, Ann Derhammer Miller and Robyn Derhammer Lynch; grandchildren, Beth Linnecke, Susan Singer, Sheila Bernard, Erin Lynch, Emily Miller and Jennifer Miller; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by a son, Eugene Bernard; a brother, Edger Derhammer; and two sisters, Velda Derhammer and Lucille Derhammer Sweeney.
Friends were received Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Howard’s Funeral Home, 931 Maple Ave., Whitesville. Funeral services were held Saturday (Feb. 1, 2003) at 11 a.m. in the Whitesville United Methodist Church. The Revs. Ray and Regina Shaw, pastors of the Andover, Greenwood, Stannards and Whitesville United Methodist churches, officiated.
Burial will be at the convenience of the family in Whitesville Rural Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the town of Independence Ambulance Corps or the Whitesville United Methodist Church.
RICHARD L. DEYOE
CUBA - Richard L. DeYoe of 2395 Wolf Creek Road died unexpectedly Wednesday (Jan. 22, 2003) in Roswell Park Cancer Institute, Buffalo.
Born June 22, 1932, in West Clarksville, he was a son of Leroy and Leona Conklin DeYoe. On Nov. 18, 1952, in Little Genesee, he married the former Ruth N. Moore, who survives.
A lifelong resident of the area, Mr. DeYoe was a veteran of the Korean War, having served with the U.S. Army.
He was employed as a truck driver for Stroehmann Bakeries in Olean before retiring in 1994.
Mr. DeYoe was a past member of the Obi United Methodist Church.
Surviving besides his wife are two sons, Rodney DeYoe and Richard DeYoe, both of Cuba; two daughters, Roxanne (James) Studley and Ronda (David) Phearsdorf, both of Cuba; 14 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; two sisters, Viola Eddy of Olean and Lois (Robert) Coss of Rochester; a brother, Paul (Dora) DeYoe of Portville; and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by a son, Raymond DeYoe, in 1997; and a daughter, Rosanne Button, in 1999.
Friends called at the Guenther Funeral Home Inc., 51 S. Main St., Portville, Saturday (Jan. 25, 2003) from 2 to 4 p.m., at which time funeral services were held. Jeffery Barnes of Tennessee officiated. Burial was in West Genesee Cemetery, Obi.
