RALPH M. TOMPKINS
WELLSVILLE - Ralph M. “Tim” Tompkins, 94, of 484 N. Main St. died Friday (May 25, 2001) in Jones Memorial Hospital after a long illness.
He was born Aug. 16, 1906 in Wellsville, the son of Charles M. and Pearl Stoup Tompkins.
On Jan. 28,1940, in Wellsville, he was married to Mona Cochran, who died April 22, 1995.
From 1928 until 1971 he was a self-employed Pennsylvania crude oil producer. In the late 1930s he also began to drill both oil and gas wells in the local area. And from 1938 until 1945 operated the Gartwait Torpedo Co., shooting wells with nitroglycerine .
He was a graduate of the Wellsville High School and the class of 1929 at the University of Pennsylvania School of Finance and Commerce in Philadelphia.
Mr. Tompkins was a former secretary of the board of trustees for the Allegany County YMCA in Wellsville. He was a member, former treasure, trustee and deacon of the First Congregational Church of Wellsville, where he also taught Sunday school and was a member of the Men's Club.
From 1940 until 1991 he was President of the Woodlawn Cemetery Mausoleum Association. From 1943 to 1947 he was chairman of the Wm. F. & Gertrude Jones Memorial Hospital board of directors, and from 1948 to 1950 he was vice chairman of the board.
In 1957 he was president of the Wellsville Centennial Association. He was also a member of the Wellsville Exchange Club, director of the Wellsville Parks Commission, member of the Wellsville Chamber of Commerce and a director of the United Way.
A very active Mason, he was crowned a 33 Degree in the Scottish Rite in 1939 and was a member of the Supreme Council. He was a member and Past Master of Wellsville Lodge 230 F& AM, district deputy Grandmaster of the Allegany County Masonic District in 1978 and 1979, a member of the Wellsville Chapter 143 RAM, and was high priest of the lodge in 1941. He was knighted in the DeMolay Commandery in Hornell in 1937. He was a member of the Corning Consistory Class of 1929, and was its commander-in-chief from 1949 to 1955.
Mr. Tompkins became a member of the Ismalia Shrine Temple 1929, was an honorary member of the Tigris Temple of Syracuse and the Kalurah Temple in Binghamton, and was a member of the Loyal Order of Jesters, Buffalo Court, in 1958.
He is survived by a daughter, Marilyn T. (John) Depew of Stow; a son, James F. Tompkins, Elmhurst, Ill.; five grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Friends called at the Mulholland-Crowell Funeral Home in Wellsville on Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m., where services were held Wednesday at 11 a.m. The Rev. William Jones, of the First Congregational Church of Wellsville, officiated. Entombment was in Woodlawn Cemetery, Wellsville. Masonic services were held in the funeral home Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
Memorials may be made to Jones Memorial Hospital or a charity of the donor's choice.

ALLEN J. WHITESELL
WELLSVILLE - Allen J. Whitesell, 75, of Independence Road died Monday (May 21, 2001) as the result of a farm accident.
Born Dec. 2, 1925, in Ulysses, Pa., he was a son of George W. and Alice Baker Whitesell. In Wellsville, he married Anna Latten McCarthy, who survives.
Mr. Whitesell was a resident of the Wellsville and Independence areas all of his life. He was a self-employed dairy farmer and also worked for several years for Forest Allen in Wellsville and Orson Babbitt and Clair Cobb.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Whitesell is survived by two sons, Michael (Darleen) Whitesell of Independence and Roger (Barbara) McCarthy of Wellsville, three daughters, Lisa (Tom) Shutt of Wellsville, Linda Saunders of Andover and Joyce (James) Beightol of Kennedy; 18 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren; four brothers, Glen (Mary) Whitesell of Elmira, Lawrence (Vesta) Whitesell and Francis (Marge) Whitesell; both of Rexville, and Alvin (Maxine3 Whitesell of Wellsville; two sisters, Goldie (Oliver) Keough of Elmira and Reva (Carl) Clark of Andover; and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by three brothers, Clarence, Robert and Irvin; four sisters, Rita, Effie, Elsie and Helen; and two stepsons, Elmer McCarthy and Ephrian McCarthy.
Friends called at the Mulholland-Crowell Funeral Home in Wellsville on Thursday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral services were held Friday (May 25, 2001) at 11 a.m. in the funeral home. The Rev. Ben Zeigler, pastor of the Wellsville Christian Fellowship Church, officiated. Burial was in the Stannards Cemetery in the town of Willing.
Memorials may be made to the Independence Emergency Squad or to a charity of the donor's choice.

JOHN R. DUNN
FRIENDSHIP - John R. Dunn of 4257 Brook Road died Sunday (July 15, 2001) in Olean General Hospital after a long illness.
Born July 2, 1936, in Cuba, he was a son of John and Mildred Babinger Dunn. On Nov. 9, 1956, he married Betty J. Irish, who survives.
He worked 28 years at Friendship Foundry and several years at Slawson Sawmill in Hunt, at Morrison & Knudson in Cornell and at Fibercel Corp. in Portville.
Mr. Dunn was a collector of Indian artifacts and was an avid hunter.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Dunn is survived by three sons, John (Donna) Dunn, Edward Dunn and Ernest Dunn, all of Friendship; three daughters, Wilma (William) Simons, Sharon (Dennis) Warner and Brenda (Lucas) Washington, all of Friendship; nine grandchildren; six step-grandchildren; three step-greatgrandchildren; a brother, James (Roberta) Dunn of Olean; a sister, Agnes (Eugene,) Allison of Winston-Salem, S.C.; and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents and by a grandson, Jason William Simons, in 1981.
There was no visitation. A graveside service was held Thursday (July 19, 2001) at 7 p.m. in Mount Hope Cemetery in Friendship.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Kopler-Williams Funeral Home in Fillmore.

ROBERT STERLING HOLLY
WELLSVILLE - Robert Sterling Holly, 89, of Lindy Lane, Wellsville, died Friday, July 13, 2001 at his home.
Born May 17, 1912 in Greenwood, NY, he was the son of Robert P. and Flossie Cheesman Holly.
On Oct. 12, 1946 at the Christian Temple in Wellsville he married Alice Sutfin, who survives.
Sterling was a 1929 graduate of Greenwood High School and had; attended R.P.I. in Troy, NY
He was a professional engineer working in Perry and Castile prior to beginning his career with the Air Preheater Co. in Wellsville in the early 1940s. From 1944 to 1946 he served with the U.S. Navy in the Philippines and the islands of Borneo and Woende.
In 1946 he continued his employment with Air Preheater until his retirement in May of 1977.
Following retirement he enjoyed golfing, gardening, traveling and spending time with his grandkids.
He was a member of the Morrison-Hayes Post 702 American Legion in Wellsville, the P.B.O.E. #1495 in Wellsville and the Air Preheater Survivors Club.
Surviving in addition to his wife are four children, Linda (Joseph) Waltos of Hinsdale, Robert (Susan) Holly of Ridgecrest, Calif., Christina (Stephen) Nicot of Hamlin, and Melissa (Randy) Grantier of Wellsville, twelve grandchildren; one great grandchild; one nephew, James B. Sutfin II of Atlanta, Ga., and one cousin, Patricia Hale of Canisteo.
He was predeceased by a sister, Lillian Dehollander on March 1, 1989.
Friends were invited to call on Monday, July 16 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. in the J.W. Embser Sons Funeral Home Inc. in Wellsville where the service was held Tuesday, July 17, 2001 at 11 a.m. Rev. Eugene Miller officiated. Burial was in the Woodlawn Cemetery in Wellsville.
Memorials may be made to the Wellsville Volunteer Ambulance Corps or to the David A. Howe Library in Wellsville.

WAYNE HARVEY
CUBA - Wayne H. Harvey of 9321 Beebe Hill Road died Saturday (July 14, 2001) in Jones Memorial Hospital in Wellsville after a long illness.
Born Aug. 15, 1915, in Leon, he was a son of Ward and Maud Snyder Harvey. On Sept. 25, 1948, in Cattaraugus, he married Joyce M. Miller, who survives.
Mr. Harvey had been employed by the Moench Tanning Co. in Gowanda until his retirement.
He enjoyed outdoor work, small engine repair, the Buffalo Bills and the Buffalo Sabres.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Harvey is survived by four sons, Phillips W. (Judy) Harvey of Hamburg, Thomas W. Harvey of Cuba, Kent A. Harvey of Springville and Dana E. Harvey of Cuba; a daughter, Brenda J. Fairbanks of Dayton; four grandchildren; a brother Raymond Harvey; and several nieces and nephews.
Mr. Harvey was predeceased by his parents and a brother, Donald Harvey.
There was no public visitation. Relatives and friends were invited to attend a memorial service Saturday (July 21, 2001) at 2 p.m. at North Park Wesleyan Church, 13 N. Park St., Cuba.
The Rev. Steven W. Steele, pastor, officiated. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.
Memorials may be made to Comstock Hospice Care Network, 1225 W. State St., Olean, NY 14760 or to North Park Wesleyan Church, 13 N. Park St., Cuba, NY 14727.
Arrangements were under the direction of the McIntosh Funeral Home (Nicholson Chapel), 24 Genesee Parkway, Cuba, NY 14727.
