HINSDALE - Harold C. Crawford of 1241 Congress Road died Friday (Oct. 5, 2001) in the Olean General Hospital following a long illness.
Born Aug. 18, 1939 in Olean, he was the son of Herbert and Elsie Wilbur Crawford. On March 7, 1981, in Portville, he married the former Marlene K. Nordland, who survives.
Mr. Crawford served in the U.S. Army from 1961 to 1964 and was an instructor at West Point. He worked at Dresser Rand, retiring due to his illness.
He was a member of Local 4601 Steelworkers Union and the Hinsdale American Legion. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, and swimming.
Surviving in addition to his wife, are a stepson, Marshall Ellis of Hickory, NC; five step-grandchildren; three sisters, Marian (Everitt) Studley of Cuba, Fredia (William) Cousins of Olean and Sherlyn (Scott) McNeil of Brunswick, Ga.; six brothers, Lewis (Judy) Crawford of Cuba, Loren (Patricia) Crawford of Zephyr Hills, Fla.; John Crawford of Wellsville, Gerald (Jean) Crawford of Leper, Pa., Russel (Patricia) Crawford of Hinsdale and David (Nancy) Crawford of Olean; and several nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by two brothers, Andy Crawford and Herman Crawford.
Friends called Sunday from 2 to 4 pm and 7 to 9 pm at the Guenther Funeral Home Inc., 1304 E. State St. in Olean, where funeral services were held at 11:30 am Monday (Oct. 8, 2001) . The Rev. Dr. Carl, pastor of the Hinsdale United Methodist Church, officiated. Burial was in Pleasant Valley Cemetery, Olean.
Memorials may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.
SCIO - Clara A. Culbert, 91, of 4014 Church St. died Friday (Aug. 31, 2001) at Jones Memorial Hospital in Wellsville.
Born Jan. 24. 1910, in Machias, she was a daughter of Charles and Georgia Rowland Felton. On June 19, 1930, in Rochester, she married Joseph Culbert, who died Jan. 8, 1966.
Mrs. Culbert was a longtime resident of Scio. She was a graduate of Machias High School. Mrs. Culbert was a member of St. Joseph's Church in Scio and also of the church's Altar and Rosary Society. She was a member of the Scio Senior Sunshine Club and the Jones Memorial Hospital Auxiliary Mulberry Twig.
Mrs. Culbert enjoyed knitting, making stuffed animals for Jones Memorial Hospital and making children's bonnets and booties.
Surviving are three sons, Joseph (Rita) Culbert of Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif., Dennis Culbert of Scio and William (Ruth) Culbert of Scio; a daughter, Nancy (Richard) Norton of Scio; 18 grandchildren; 18 greatgrandchildren; a sister, Agnes Phillips of Delevan; a sister-in-law, Jackie Felton of Hinsdale; and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by a son, Robert Culbert; a daughter, Mary Lou Grossman; a great-granddaughter, Erin Jens; a great-grandson Nathan Jens; five brothers, Walter Felton, William Felton, Charles Felton, Robert Felton and John Felton; and two sisters, Marian Felton and Doris Dalton.
Friends were received from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the J.W. Embser Sons Funeral Home Inc. in Wellsville. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Wednesday (Sept. 5, 2001) at 11 a.m. at St. Joseph's Church in Scio. The Rev. Joseph Vatter was the celebrant. A prayer service preceded the Mass at 10:30 a.m. in the funeral home. Burial was in St. Joseph's Cemetery in Scio.
Memorials may be made tc St. Joseph's Church, to the SPCA Serving Allegany County, to the Scio Free Library or to the charity of the donor's choice.
WELLSVILLE - Joanne E. Dates, 56, of 27. Nelson Ave. died Sunday (Oct. 7, 2001) in Jones Memorial Hospital, Wellsville.
Born Feb. 12, 1945, in Wellsville, she was a daughter of John and Mariam Harmon Butler.
A lifelong resident of Wellsville, Ms. Dates was a 1963 graduate of Wellsville High School.
She had been employed as an engineering service clerk at Alstom Power-Air Preheater Co. in Wellsville for several years.
She was a member of Beta Sigma Phi sorority.
Surviving besides her mother of Wellsville are two daughters, Kimberly A. Dates of Clayton, N.C., and Karen A. Dates of Rateigh, N.C.; a sister, Diane E. Daly of Getzville; several nieces and nephews; and long time special friend, Dennis O'Connor of Wellsville.
There was no visitation. A memorial service was held Saturday (Oct. 13, 2001) at the convenience of the family, where Rev. Dennis Wolf officiated. Burial was in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Wellsville.
Memorials may be made to the Allegany County SPCA or the Comstock Hospice Care Network.
Arrangements are under direction of the J.W. Embser Sons Funeral Home, Wellsville.
BELFAST - Lawrence E. Davison, 36, of 8021 Wigwam Road died Wednesday (Oct. 3, 2001) in Strong Memorial Hospital, Rochester.
Born Jan. 8, 1965, in Wellsville, he was a son of Warren E. and Anna Stuck Davidson Sr.
At the time of his death, Mr. Davison was an assembly line employee at Prestolite in Arcade.
He enjoyed walking, fishing, coin collecting, working on cars, and he loved animals.
Surviving besides his parents of Belfast are a brother, Warren E. (Kelly) Davison Jr. of Belfast; two sisters, Rose (Frederick) Ely of Belfast and Susan Stuck of Binghamton; three nieces; four nephews; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.
He was predeceased by a sister, Sarah Davison, in 1968.
Friends called Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the J. W. Embser Sons Funeral Home Inc., Wellsville, where funeral services were held Monday (Oct. 8, 2001) at 2 p.m. The Rev. Raymond Shaw will officiated.
Burial was in Woodlawn Cemetery, Wellsville.
Memorials may be made to the Belfast Rescue Squad.
CUBA - Ruth E. Maurer of East Main St., died Saturday (Oct. 6, 2001) at the Cuba Memorial Hospital following a long illness. Born Feb. 6, 1922 in Cleveland, Ohio she was the daughter of Frank and Ella Leader Palidar.
Ms. Maurer owned and operated the Skyeloft Tavern where she was famous for her ham sandwiches, on Cuba Lake from 1964-1984. She then was employed as a bar tender at the Bakery Tavern in Cuba for several years. Later she moved to Bordentown, NJ where she was employed as a clerk at the Bordentown Deli for a few years. Ms. Maurer was an avid Bingo player and would travel to all the surrounding town to play everyday.
Surviving is a son Richard (Nancy) Maurer of Coral Springs, FL and two daughters Terri Maurer of Farmersville Sta., and Donna (Henry) Ross of Cuba. Five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Two brothers, Harry (Mina) Palidar of Bordentown, NJ and Howard (Agnes) Palidar of Michigan, and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by three brothers, Edward Palidar, George Palidar, and Robert Palidar.
There was no prior visitation, funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family. Memorials may be made to the Cuba Memorial Hospital, Residential Health Care Facility, 140 W. Main St., Cuba, NY 14727. Arrangements are under the direction of McIntosh Funeral Home, Cuba NY.
WELLSVILLE - A gravesite service for Corinne R. Nicholson, who died September 11, 2001 in Wellsville, NY, was held in the Candeadea Cemtery on Saturday, October 13, 2001 at 11:00 am. The Rev. Ralph Eastlack officiated. Corinne Nicholson was a former resident of Wellsville, NY. Prior to her move to Wellsville, she had resided in Caneadea for many years.
BELFAST - Helen E. “Jean” Palmer, 59, of 17 W. Hughes St. died Monday (Oct. 8, 2001) in her home after a lengthy illness.
Born Nov. 11, 1941, in Buffalo, she was a daughter of William J. and Helen C. Crawford McCarns. In 1973 in Tonawanda, she married William H. Palmer, who died Jan. 12, 1981.
A resident of Belfast most of her life, Mrs. Palmer was a 1959 graduate of Belfast Central School.
She was a telephone operator for Bell Telephone Co. in Belfast for many years and later was employed on the assembly line at Motorola Corp. in Arcade.
Mrs. Palmer was a 30-year member of the Belfast American Legion Post 1504 Auxiliary. She was an avid reader and enjoyed crafts of all kinds.
Surviving are a special friend, David R Fisher of Belfast; a daughter, Shelley L. Palmer of Belfast; a stepdaughter, Bonita (David) Storm of Caneadea; two stepsons, Philip (Cindy) Palmer of Niagara Falls and Gerald (Zeledith “Sally”) Palmer of Belfast; several step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren; a brother, William John (Marjorie) McCarns of Arcade; and several nieces and nephews.
There was no visitation. A private memorial service was held Thursday (Oct. 11, 2001) in the Belfast United Methodist Church, where Rev. Jemufer L. Greene, pastor, officiated. Burial was in Riverside Cemetery, Belfast.
Memorials may be made to Comstock Hospice Care Network, 118 N. Main St., Wellsville, NY 14895.
Arrangements are under direction of the Funeral Home.
