Dorothy E. Bastian, formerly of Merriam Heights, passed away on June 23, 2005 at the Wellsville Manor Care Center. She was born on November 9, 1916 in Wellsville to Thomas and Jeanette Calbes Hubertus. On April 12, 1937 in Wellsville she was married to Edward C. Bastian who predeceased her in 1944. Dorothy was a life long resident of Wellsville. She attended Wellsville High School and enjoyed soccer, basketball and track while in school. She was employed by the Candy Kitchen, Pickup’s Hotel, Davies and retired from C.E. Air Preheater after 23 years of service. Dorothy loved to cook, bake pies and play cards and was a member of the Immaculate Conception Church. Survivors include: a son Edward [Barbara] Bastian of Wellsville; 3 grandsons MSGT Terry [Shawn] Bastian of McChord Air Force Base in Washington, William [Nancy] Bastian of Wellsville and Kennon Bastian of Minnesota; 2 step grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren, 2 step great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Dorothy was predeceased by 2 sons: Terry Bastian in 1963 and Jan Bastian in 1997; 4 brothers Franklin, Leslie, William and Roy Hubertus and sister Amelia Seager. Friends are invited to call on Sunday from 2-4 & 7-9 pm in the J.W. Embser & Sons Funeral Home in Wellsville. A Prayer Service will be held on Monday at 10:30 am in the Funeral Home followed by Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 11 am in the Immaculate Conception Church with Reverend Dennis Mancuso. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery and memorials may be made to the David A. Howe Library.

Helen Stryker Shear, 91, of Regan Road, passed away peacefully at home on Sunday August 21, 2005 following a long illness. She was born February 11, 1914 in Apulia Station, NY the daughter of Arthur and Margaret (Ottman) Stryker. On August 14, 1939 she married Richard C. Shear who predeceased her on September 24, 1995. Helen was a graduate of Baldwinsville High School and received a Bachelors of Arts degree from Syracuse University in 1937. She resided most of her life in Wellsville, teaching business and shorthand from 1937 to 1939 at Wellsville High School and continued to substitute teach in later years. She was also employed for many years at the family business; Hamilton’s Shoe Store in Wellsville. She joined the Wellsville Country Club in 1937 and was avid golfer well into her eighties. She was a member of the First Trinity Lutheran Church and had served on the Altar Guild. Surviving are 2 daughters, Jacqueline (David) Allen of Coloma, Mich., Jannette (Clay) Davenport of Plandome, NY, one son, Richard (Gwynneth) Shear of Wellsville, grandchildren, Richard Allen, Kristin Toohey, Kerry Davenport, Jay Davenport, and great granddaughters, Morgan Allen and Sarah and Anne Toohey. Also surviving is a sister, Jeannette (Bud) Hoagland of Palm Harbor, FL.There will be no prior visitation. A private service will take place at the convenience of the family with burial in Woodlawn Cemetery. In lieu of Flowers, memorial suggestions include the Allegany County United Way, First Trinity Lutheran Church or Home Care & Hospice. Arrangements are under the direction of the J. W. Embser Sons Funeral Home Inc.

Patrick L. Forness, 40, of 3295 Proctor Road, died unexpectedly at home on Saturday September 3, 2005. He was born August 17, 1965 at Our Lady of Victory Hospital in Lackawanna, the son of Thomas and Marilyn (Smith) Forness. On October 25, 1997 in Hornell he married Kimberly Brown who survives. Pat was a life long resident of Wellsville and a 1984 graduate of Wellsville High School. He was formerly employed at C. E. Air Preheater Company in Wellsville and was currently an employee of Dresser-Rand of Wellsville. He was a former member of the Dyke Street Engine Company and a member of the Millwright Union Local 66 and the Immaculate Conception Church. He enjoyed NASCAR, football, golf, bowling, hunting, fishing, and spending time with his family and friends. Surviving in addition to his wife Kimberly are his parents Tom and Marilyn Forness of Wellsville, 4 children, Matthew, Kendra, Grace and Brennan Forness all at home, 1 brother, Chris (Jamie) Forness of Wellsville, 2 sisters, Kelly (Danny) Goodridge of Wellsville, Lisa (Dusty) Ainsworth of Whitesville and several nieces & nephews. Friends are invited to call today from 2:00 to 4:00 and 7:00 to 9:00 pm at the J. W. Embser Sons Funeral Home inc. in Wellsville. The funeral will be Wednesday September 7th at 11:00 am in the funeral home with Rev. Dennis Mancuso presiding. William G. Winn, of 2619 State Route 244, passed away on Monday September 5, 2005 at Jones Memorial Hospital. He was born on September 8, 1942 in Niagara Falls, NY. to Garnet D. and Isabel Lum Winn. On May 27, 2000 in Alabama, NY. he married Elizabeth “Betty” Conway who survives. William graduated from La Salle High School in 1960 and retired from Dresser Rand in 2004 after 39 years of service. He was member of the I.A.M. Union in Wellsville and enjoyed trap shooting. Surviving besides his wife include: 4 daughters, Kristie [Rich] Apgar of Harpursville, NY.; Kathleen [Jack] Thomas of Ulysses, PA.; Michele Crandall of Manchester, NH. and Kelly Winn of Nashua, NH.; 2 step sons Raymond [Angel] Feness of Buffalo, NY. and Scott [Alisha] Feness of Bryansroad, MD.; 8 grandchildren; a sister Emmy Lou Miller of Niagara Falls, NY as well as several nieces and nephews. As per William’s request there will not be any services and memorials wishes may be made to the Amity Rescue Squad. Arrangements are under the direction of the J.W. Embser Sons Funeral Home in Belmont.

Joyce W. Elliott, formerly of 87 Liberty Street in Bolivar, passed away on Wednesday September 7, 2005 in the Wellsville Manor Care Center after a long illness. She was born in Eleven Mile, PA. to Rubin O. and Doris W. Yeager Elliott. She was a life time resident of Bolivar who graduated from BolivarHigh School and from the Rochester Business School in Wellsville. She started her working career as a bookkeeper for the former Woodruff Cheese Factory in Andover and spent the rest of her career working for various attorneys in Bolivar. She retired in 1986 from Mergler and Haggstrom Attorneys. Joyce was a member of the Bolivar United Methodist Church where she served as bookkeeper for many years. In her spare time she liked to help her parents with their restaurant called the Bolivar Lunch Room and she was very fond of her nieces and nephews. Survivors include: a brother R. Wayne [Lois] Elliott of Wellsville; a sister Dawn Joan Elliott of Wellsville; 2 nieces Pamela] Robert] Stevenson of Olean and Susan [Albert] Meyer of Painesville, OH.; 4 nephews David [Kathy] Elliot of Hyde Park, Mark [Linda] Elliott of Wellsville, Jon [Cheryl] Elliott of Scio and Greg [Lori] Elliott of Wellsville; several great nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a brother Gerald E. Elliott Friends may call at the J.W. Embser Sons Funeral Home in Wellsville on Friday from 2-4 and 7-9pm. A Funeral service will be held in the funeral Home on Saturday at 11 am. Her burial will be in Maple Lawn Cemetery in Bolivar and memorials may be made to the SPCA serving Allegany County.

Raymond L. Stone, 88, of 3191 Fassett Lane, passed away on Sunday October 2, 2005 at the Westgate Nursing Home in Rochester, NY following a brief illness. He was born December 31, 1916 in Portage, PA the son of Harry and Emma Jean (Newton) Stone. On June 21, 1946 in Allentown, NY he married Sephronia McCarthy who predeceased him on August 27, 2000. Raymond was a graduate of Shinglehouse High School and was a veteran WW II serving as a Technician with the U.S. Army Battery D 209th Anti Aircraft Artillery Battalion. He was first employed in the oil fields and later for Burke Steel in Rochester, NY, where he resided for 25 years prior to retirement in 1979. He is survived by 1 daughter, Judy Marie Angie of Rochester, 2 sons, Bruce L. Stone of Hamlin and David R. Stone of Rochester, 6 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. Friends are invited to the graveside on Thursday October 6th at 1:00 pm at Yorks Corners Cemetery. There will be on prior visitation. Arrangements are under the direction of the J. W. Embser Sons Funeral Home Inc.

Wallace W. “Bill” Rushmore Jr., 78, of 94 Hanover Street, passed away on Wednesday October 5, 2005 at the Wellsville Manor Care Center. He was born February 7, 1927 in Wellsville the son of Wallace W. and Gladys Mae (Marsh) Rushmore Sr. On March 25, 1989 in Wellsville he married Barbara Brooker Carl who survives. Bill was a life long resident of Wellsville and a veteran of the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He was first employed by the Railroad and later by the Village of Wellsville for many years retiring in 1985. He was a life member of the Frank B. Church Post 2530 VFW in Wellsville and was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting and fishing. Surviving in addition to his wife Barbara, is 1 son, Gregory Rushmore of Colorado, 1 daughter, Sherry (Bob) Clark of Wellsville, 6 step children, Judy (Dave) Mitchell of Bolivar, Douglas (Theresa) Carl, Brian (Della) Carl, and Donald Carl all of Wellsville, Jeffrey (Nicole) Carl of Andover, Caryn (Brad) Shaver of Laredo, TX, 20 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren, 1 brother, Gary (Jean) Rushmore, 1 sister, Alice Carley of Texas and several nieces & nephews. Friends are invited to call on Sunday from 2:00 to 4:00 and 7:00 to 9:00 pm at the J. W. Embser Sons Funeral Home Inc. in Wellsville. The funeral with military honors will be Monday October 10th at 11:00 am in the funeral home with Rev. Duane Messler presiding. Memorial suggestions include the SPCA serving Allegany County.

Lawrence R. Tait, 71, of 85 South Street, passed away on Thursday October 6, 2005 at Jones Memorial Hospital in Wellsville following a brief illness. He was born May 28, 1934 in the Town of Scio, NY, the son of Harry and Josephine (Lee) Tait. On September 10, 1955 in Wellsville he married Roseanna Biancuzzo, who survives. Larry attended schools in Wellsville, Allentown and Belmont, NY. In 1950 he joined the U. S. Marine Corps and served 15 months in Korea and was honorably discharged in 1953. He was employed by the United States Postal Service as rural mail carrier, retiring in 1988. He was a member and past adjutant for the Herbert Delong Post 808 American Legion in Belmont. Due to his family, friends and farm he experienced a very pleasant life. Surviving in addition to his wife Roseanna, is 1 sister, Ruth Livergood of Wellsville, several nieces, nephews, cousins, a special cousin, John Rahr of Belmont and a special friend Victor Whitney of Belmont. He was predeceased by 3 brothers, Harry, Leroy and Carl Tait and 2 sisters, June Dean and Cora Mae Billings. Friends are invited to call on Monday October 10th from 12:00 noon to 4:00 pm at the J. W. Embser Sons Funeral Home Inc. in BELMONT. The funeral will follow visitation at 4:00 pm in the funeral home with Rev. Ron Sellers presiding. Memorial suggestions include the SPCA serving Allegany County or the Amity Rescue Squad.
