MARIE L. ROOT
WELLSVILLE - Marie L. “Maude” Root, 85, of 4413 Bolivar Road died Monday (Oct. 1, 2001) in Jones Memorial Hospital.
Born May 18, 1916, in Eldred, Pa., she was a daughter of Francis F. and Margaret Entler Slavin. On Nov. 21, 1936, in Eldred, she married Ralph B. Root, who predeceased her in 1978.
A former resident of Bolivar, Mrs. Root was a member of St. Alary's Catholic Church; Wellsville Moose Lodge 601, where she served as a senior regent; member of the Academy of Friendship 670; the Power Squadron; and the Professional and Business Women's Club.
Mrs. Root was an avid bowler and bowled in a couples league in Bolivar and a ladies league in Wellsville. She also loved boating and fishing.
Surviving are four sons, Francis Root of Bolivar, John (Beverly) Root of Pine City, William (Karen) Root of Arcade and David (Debra) Root of Scio; three daughters, Janet (David) Williams of Wellsville, Linda (Jerry) Potter of Scottsville, and Ann (Michael) McLaughlin of Wellsville; 23 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; three brothers, Francis Slavin and Kenneth (Faye) Slavin, both of Eldred, and Richard (Alice) Slavin of Perris, Calif.; a sister, Helen Matlack of Lockport; and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by two brothers, Harold Slavin and Russell Slavin.
Friends called Thursday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the J.W. Embser Sons Funeral Home Inc., Wellsville, where a prayer service was held Friday (Oct. 5, 2001) at 9:30 a.m., followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in Immaculate Conception Church. The Rev. Dennis Wolf was celebrant.
Burial was in St. Mary's Cemetery, Bolivar.
Memorials may be made to the Wellsville Volunteer Ambulance Corps, American Diabetes Association, or to the American Heart Association.
DOROTHY A. SCHULTHEIS
ARKPORT - Dorothy A. Schultheis. 75, of 9059 Cream Hill Rd., passed away Thursday mornmg (Sept. 20, 2001) after a long illness.
Born in Andover on Aug. 20, 1920. she was the daughter of the late Harry and Augusta Lewis Baker.
A graduate of Andover Central School, she was a former resident of the Village of Arkport and has resided at her Cream Hill Road home for the past 11 years.
Dorothy was a member of the Arkport Presbyterian Church for over 40 years and was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Arkport American Legion.
She was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother and sister, who enjoyed her family, her home and cooking for everyone. She was also an avid golfer.
Her family includes her husband of 54 years, Lee Schultheis, who she married m Wellsville on Sept. 23, 1947; her daughter, Barbara (Duffy) Elsenheimer of Arkport; her three sons, Gary (Karen) Schultheis, Alan and John Schultheis, all of Arkport; her 11 grandchildren; her brother, Richard (Melinda) Baker of Atlanta, Ga.; and also her many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Besides her parents, Dorothy was predeceased by her brother, Robert Baker.
Calling hours were from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the Bishop & Johnson Funeral Home. Inc., 285 Main St., Hornell. A funeral and committal service was held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Arkport Presbyterian Church. CHARLES H. SHAFER SR.
BELFAST - Charles Henry Shafer Sr., 89, of 6870 County Road 17, White Creek Road, died Tuesday (Oct. 9, 2001) in The Waters of Houghton Nursing Home after a lengthy illness.
Born Aug. 15, 1912, in Rushford, he was a son of Homer A. and Edith Horton Shafer. On June 26, 1937, in Nile, he married the former Rose M. Williams, who survives.
Mr. Shafer had lived most of his life in the Friendship area and attended Rushford Rural School District.
He worked on the family farm in Nile for a few years, was employed by the Albert Childs dairy farm in West Clarksville for several years, and from 1947 until his retirement in 1975 he was employed by the Allegany County Highway Department in Friendship.
Surviving besides his wife are two sons, Charles H. (Linda) Shafer Jr. of Portville and Mark A. (Diane) Shafer of Belfast; two daughters, Glenda M. (Harold) Hurlburt of Genesee, Pa., and Pamela H. (Harold) Cook of Friendship; 14 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; a brother, Lawrence (Elsie) Shaffer of Cuba; two sistets, Beaulah Barber of LeRoy and Carmelita Butts of Cuba; and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by two infant brothers; and six sisters, Margaret Sisson, Mildred Williams, Martha Benson, Oletha Shafer, Frances Shafer and Beatrice Twichell.
Friends may called Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.at the Treusdell Funeral Home, Belfast, where funeral services were held Friday (Oct. 12, 2001) at 11 a.m. Elder David. Krivulka of the Cuba Congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses officiated. Burial was in Maple Grove Cemetery, Friendship.

JANE E. SKIVER-REESE
SHINGLEHOUSE, Pa. - Jane E. Skiver-Reese, 81, of Apt. 104 Honeoye Haven, died Saturday (Sept. 22, 2001) in Olean General Hospital, Olean, NY
Born June 7, 1920, in Bradford, she was a daughter or Herbert A. and Margaret Ruth Simons Hardy. On July 20, 1937, she married Francis A. Skiver, who died March 5, 1978. She then married Ferman Reese in June of 1986, who died in 1991.
She graduated from Custer City School and was a homemaker.
Surviving are three daughters, Gloria R. (James) Flanders of Auburn, NY, Jane “Sally” E. (Robert Mazza) Monroe Mazza of Cuba, NY, and Karen E. (Frank) Coleman of Eldred; a son, Phillip A. (Linda) Skiver of Shinglehouse; a sister, Lois A. (Herbert) Wolfel of Kersey; 19 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
Friends were received Monday, Sept. 24, 2001, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Koch Chatley Gaeto Memorial Chapel I. Funeral services were held Tuesday (Sept. 25, 2001) at 11 a.m. in the Koch Chatley Gaeto Memorial Chapel Inc., Bradford. The Rev. Robert Goode, Olean General Hospital chaplain, officiated.
Burial was in Limestone Cemetery, Limestone, NY

VALERIE J. SKROBACK
ALLEGANY - Valerie J. Skroback of 547 Four Mile Road died Tuesday (Oct. 2, 2001) in the Olean General Hospital after a long illness.
Born June 25, 1954, in Olean, she was a daughter of Steven and Ruby Phearsdorf Skroback.
She was a graduate of Allegany Central School and had been employed by Acme Electric Co. Inc., in Cuba for over 25 years prior to her retirement due to disability.
Surviving besides her mother of Allegany are a sister, Denise Skroback of Allegany.
She was predeceased by her father in 1989.
There was no visitation. A private graveside service will be held at the convenience of the family in St. Bonaventure Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or to a charity of the donor's choice.

SIDNEY L. STODDARD
BOLIVAR - Sidney L. Stoddard, 74, of 184 Reed St. died Monday (Sept. 24, 2001) in the Wellsville Manor Nursing Home following a lengthy illness.
Born May 21, 1927, in Olean, he was a son of Leon and Nina Thornton Stoddard. On April 18, 1952, in Orchard Park, he married the former Polly Combs, who survives.
Mr. Stoddard was a veteran of World War II, serving with the U.S. Navy.
He was employed for 20 years by the Cattaraugus County Highway Department, retiring in 1983.
Surviving besides his wife are three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and four sisters, Mrs. Cora Meacharn of Olean, Mrs. Jennie Keeton. of Newcomerstown, Ohio, Mrs. Reva Gilliland of Bolivar andMrs. Ruth Osgood of Portville.
He was predeceased by a stepson, James Stacy; and several sisters.
Friends called Wednesday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.at the Schaffner Funeral Home Inc., Bolivar, where funeral and committal services were held Thursday (Sept. 27, 2001) at 10 a.m. The Rev. David Herne of the Heritage AFlame Ministries of Bolivar officiated. Burial was in Maple Lawn Cemetery, Bolivar.
