BELMONT - Rand Steven Beckman Sr., 59, passed away peacefully with his family by his side Wednesday (March 19, 2008) at Jones Memorial Hospital in Wellsville.
Rand was born Aug. 16, 1948, in Wellsville, the son of Reynold E. and Beverly (Boyd) Beckman. Rand’s father was a U.S. Navy World War II veteran.
A lifelong resident of Allegany County, Rand graduated from Wellsville Central School in 1966. On Jan. 27, 1968, he married the former Connie L. Lewis of Andover, in Wellsville at the Immaculate Conception Church. They recently celebrated 40 years of marriage on Jan. 27, 2008.
After high school, Rand was a member of the first graduating class of the Alfred State College, Wellsville Campus, with a degree in automotive mechanics. Rand immediately went to work in retail sales, first with the family business of Beckman and Sons Distributors. From there, his career took him many places and to many points of contact. His likable personality and easy temperament made for many friends and lifelong relationships.
Having discovered that his real love was in tools and parts (and following in his grandfather John Boyd’s long tenure at Carter Hardware on Wellsville’s Main Street), Rand opened Wellsville’s first NAPA store in 1978. He was a master salesman of parts, tools and equipment. His expertise eventually led him to NAPA distribution. After selling the auto parts store, Rand worked as a district manager for Easco-KD Tools for 10 years. All during this time, Rand enjoyed a hobby of collecting antiques.
In 1992, together with his wife, Connie, Rand started full-time in the antiques and collectibles business. He was a literal artist of refurbishing and restoring antique furniture. That talent, combined with his family sales acumen, together with his wife’s eye for the special touch, resulted in a lifetime of vocational success as an antiques dealer, salesman, collector and appraiser. As a result of their efforts, a part of the Twin Tier history has been preserved for the generations to come.
Rand combined his considerable professional talent with a love of cooking and entertaining his many family members. An expert cook and connoisseur, Randy spent many enjoyable hours entertaining and serving holiday meals and events. He took great pride in being able to share the results of his considerable skills with his family and friends in his very tasteful and classically decorated homes in Wellsville and in Belmont, with the trademark lighted candles in every window.
Beyond his family and professional success, Rand was also a community servant. He served for 12 years with the McEwen Hose Company of the Wellsville Volunteer Fire Department. During his tenure, Rand was elected captain of the McEwens, a front-line leadership position that reflected the measure of the company’s respect for him as a man and ultimately reflected the community’s appreciation for his dedication and loyalty to the protection and safety of others.
Rand is survived by his wife of 40 years, Connie Lewis Beckman; their son, Rand S. Beckman, Jr., a United States Air Force veteran and Allegany County deputy sheriff; and their grandson, Hunter Beckman. In addition, Rand is survived by his mother, Beverly B. Infererra of Wellsville; his siblings Darcy Beckman (William) Pulos of Alfred, Reynold (Donna) Beckman of Delaware, Jill Beckman (Thomas) Grannis of Elmira, Todd (Loretta) Beckman of Colorado, Joseph (Penny) Infererra of Connecticut, John (Jodi) Infererra and James Infererra of Rochester; sister-in-law, Sharon (Alan) Green of Andover; and by nieces and nephews, Nathan and Nicole Aguiar, Zack and Andrew Beckman, Jessica and Emily Beckman, Alexis, Fred, Todd Jr. and Scott Beckman, David Meyer, Basil, Jake and Lucas Infererra, Maci and Lyndsi Lloyd, Nicholas and Natalie Infererra, Matt (Molly) Green, Chad Green and Shelley Green (Brian) Snyder; grandnieces, grandnephews and cousins; his mother-in-law, Norma Lewis Gavin of Andover; stepmother, Mellicent (Mel) K. Beckman of Elmira; great-aunts, Geneva Beckman Shreve, Esther Beckman Nestle and Marjorie (Harold) Beckman, all of Jamestown, and Dorothy (“Mote”) Tarantine of Ithaca.
He was predeceased by his four special grandparents, Ernest and Floy (Ribbing) Beckman of Jamestown and John and Mary (Tarantine) Boyd of Wellsville; his father, Reynold E. Beckman of Elmira; his father-in-law Francis Gavin of Andover; his stepfather, Basil J. Infererra of Wellsville; and his grandnephew, Wyatt Snyder.
Friends may call from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. today (March 21, 2008) at the J.W. Embser and Sons Funeral Home, Inc., 34 W. State St., Wellsville, where funeral and committal services will take place at 3 p.m. Saturday (March 22, 2008) with Deacon Frank Pasquale presiding. Internment will take place at 10 a.m. Monday (March 24, 2008) at St. Mary’s Cemetery in the Allegany County seat of Belmont, where Rand (at his request) will be buried near his grandfather, John P. Boyd, whose grandfather, Alexander Boyd, was a Civil War veteran in the U.S. Civil War and later was sheriff of Wellsville.
The Beckman family will gratefully appreciate memorial donations made in Rand’s name to either the McEwen Hose Company, Dyke Street, Wellsville or the David A. Howe Memorial Children’s Library, Main Street, Wellsville.
