J. Einar Gustavson
7/19/2007 - J. Einar Gustavson, 91, of Colfax St, Jamestown, passed away on July 11, 2007 in his home.
A native of Jamestown he was born October 29, 1915 the son of J. Arthur and Signe Sjoqvist Gustavson.
Mr. Gustavson was a tool and die maker for Acu-Rite Division of Bausch & Lomb retiring in 1980 and formerly was employed at Weber Knapp, Premium Tool & Die and Reliance Tool & Die.
He was a 1934 graduate of Jamestown High School and served in the US Army during World War II serving in the Anti Aircraft Battalion, 842nd from 1943 to 1944 and in the Signal Corp in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater stationed in Hawaii from 1944 until his discharge in February 1946.
Mr. Gustavson was a member of First Baptist Church and was active in and served as chairman of the Board of Ushers for 20 years, Deaconate for 16 years and the Board of Trustees. He was also a member of Ira Lou Spring Post # 149 American Legion and served as Past Commander.
Surviving are a daughter Donna J. (Glen) Landers of Russell, Pa.; four grandchildren, Melinda Landers of Russell, Melissa (SSG Jared) VanOrd of Camp Zama, Japan, Joshua Daigler of Buffalo, and Mary Daigler of Albany; three great-grandchildren, Matthew Stover of Russell, Brodie and Wylie VanOrd of Camp Zama, Japan; three brothers, Harry R. Gustavson of Frewsburg, Ralph D. Gustavson of Lake Oswego, Ore. and Darwin C. Gustavson of Westfield; and three sisters Marilyn Furman of Mayville, Carolyn Johnson and Alice Ann Wells both of Jamestown.
Mr. Gustavson was preceded in death by a daughter Linda Daigler who passed away Jan. 2, 1997; a sister Doris Ann Rinaldo in November 2001; and three brothers Eric Arthur Gustavson in October 1979, Bertil Gustavson on Feb. 10, 1995 and Roy A. Gustavson on June 6, 2007.
Burial will be in the Sunset Hill Cemetery.

Sarah B. Harvey
11/22/2006 - Sarah B. Harvey, 85, of Miller St. Sherman died November 15, 2006 at Westfield Memorial Hospital.
She was born September 26, 1921 in South Ripley the daughter of the late Frederick & Florence Dean Raven.
She had worked at Welch s in North East, Pa. for 32 years, retiring in 1980. She was a member of the Sherman Community Church, the former Y.W. Circle of the church, and participated in all church activities, and was especially well known for the annual church Swiss Steak Dinner.
She was also a member of Area Christian Action Council, and the Minerva Club of Sherman. She had received the outstanding person of the year award from the church in 1991, and she alone with her husband received the Sherman Christmas Festival award for their years of service to the community in 1993. She enjoyed taking care of her grandchildren watching them grow and attending their activities in church and school.
She enjoyed driving her many friends to dinner, doctor s appointments and shopping.
She was an avid reader and in earlier years enjoyed bowling, and was hard to beat in 500. She enjoyed attending many family functions, at Shadowood Retreat, her brother s camp.
She is survived by her son Philip (wife Linda) Harvey of Sherman; daughter Eileen (husband Gordon) McCray of Clymer; and an AFS daughter GiGi Potma, her Dutch foreign exchange student now living in Spain; four grandchildren, Nathan (wife Hillary) Harvey, of Buffalo, NY Matthew McCray, Clymer, NY, Mark (wife Christine) McCray of Clinton Conn., Holly Beth (Husband Darrin) McCalla, of Syracuse; three great-grandchildren, Zachary and Olivia McCray of Clinton, Conn. and Kaleb McCalla, of Syracuse; two brothers, James (wife Alvina) Raven, and George Raven both of Sherman; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband Harold C. Harvey, whom she married June 28, 1940, and who died April 7, 1995; a brother Walter Raven, in 1995; and a sister, Florence Eades, in 2004.
Burial will be in Sherman Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the Sherman Community Church or the Stanley Hose Volunteer Fire Department.

Wilbert Ruff
11/22/2006 - Wilbert Bill C. Ruff, 92, of Tequesta, Fla., passed away on November 10, 2006.
Born in Buffalo, Bill had been a resident of Florida since 1993, coming from Clymer.
Prior to his retirement, Bill worked as a Railroad Agent for the Railroad.
He enjoyed gardening and was a Boy Scout leader.
Bill is survived by two daughters, Marcia (George) Kugler, and Monica Rodgers; a son, Girard Ruff; seven grandchildren, Irme and Christopher Kugler, Chelsey and Dori Ruff, and Nicholas, Jamison and Luke Rodgers. He is predeceased by his wife, Charla Ruff; and a daughter, Melanie Ruff.
Interment will be at Riverside Memorial Park, Tequesta, Fla.
Funeral Arrangements have been entrusted to Aycock Funeral Home on Military Trail in Jupiter, Fla.
Donald J. Paddock
11/22/2006 - Donald J. Paddock, 81, of Felton Road, Westfield, died Nov. 19, 2006 in Heritage Green Health Care Center, Greenhurst.
He was born Nov. 5, 1925, in Portland, N.Y., the son of the late Frank L. and Myrtle Victoria Raynor Paddock. He had been a truck driver for Chautauqua County Highway Dept. out of Falconer.
Don enjoyed fishing, watching TV, but most of all he loved his family.
He is survived by his wife, Bertha L. Briggs Paddock, whom he married Oct. 10, 1943 in Frewsburg; two daughters, Donna Ransom of Avondale, Ariz., and Priscilla Farver of Mayville; two sons, Kenneth J. Paddock of Salisbury, N.C., and Donald F. Paddock of Portland; 10 grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren; one sister, Jenette Robins of Westfield; and one brother, William Bill Paddock of Mayville.
He was preceded in death by one son, Jonathan Paddock who died January 27, 2004; two sisters, June Freeman Cole, and Julia Heil; two brothers, Paul and Merle Paddock.
Burial will be in the Stockton Greenwood Cemetery.

Lawrence D. Larson
11/17/2006 - Lawrence D. Larson, 66, of Weeks Road, Panama, formerly of Jamestown, died unexpectedly on Nov. 8, 2006 in the Heritage Green Health Care Center.
He was born June 23, 1940 in Jamestown, the son of the late Robert and Arlene Chase Larson.
Larry was a graduate of Bemus Point High School and was a U.S. Army veteran. For over 25 years, he was a firefighter with the Jamestown Fire Department, retiring in 1992. Following retirement, he bought and sold collectibles and enjoyed going to auctions.
He was a member of the Vikings, Southern Tier Riders and John W. Tiffany Post 53 VFW.
Surviving are a daughter, Stephanie Larson Green, of Panama; two grandchildren, Tristen Arlene Larson and Taylor Patrick Green, both of Panama; a brother, Lyle Larson, of Bemus Point; a sister, Sondra Fuchs, of English, Fla.; and his aunt, Jane Kolstee, of Jamestown.
Burial will be in Bemus Point Cemetery.

Coralie A. Fox
11/17/2006 - Coralie A. Fox, 86, formerly of Prospect Station Road, Mayville, died peacefully at the Chautauqua County Home in Dunkirk with family at her side.
She was born in Silver Creek on Oct. 7, 1920, the daughter of the late Archie and Olive Manning McBratnie.
Coralie will be remembered for her love of her family, friends and life.
She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, sewing, painting, baking and writing poetry.
She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and the First Presbyterian Church of Westfield and served as a volunteer for Hospice while living in Florida.
She will be missed by all whose lives she touched and by her cat, Pumpkin. If anybody needed anything, she was there for them.
Surviving are four sons, Lonnie Fox of Mayville, Randy (Cindy) Fox of Plantation, Fla., Kevin (Marty) Fox of Lily Dale and Russel (Audrey) Fox, of Bronx, N.Y.; one daughter, Dianna (Roger) Williams, of Mayville; 10 grandchildren, Lisa, Brian and Ashley, Kevin M., Jennifer, Ian and Cara, Roger, Daryl and Kerry; and 11 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Russel Fox, whom she married Jan. 20, 1940 and who died Feb. 18, 1991; an infant daughter, Donna Mae, in 1942; and two brothers, Nelson and Maes Bratnie.
Interment will be in Evergreen Lawn Cemetery.
The family suggests memorials be made to Alzheimer s Association or Hospice Chautauqua County.

Walter E. Freeman
11/9/2006 - Walter E. Freeman, 89, of Fuller Road, Portland, died Nov. 5, 2006 in his home.
He was born Jan. 5, 1917 in Sherman, the son of the late Earl and Ethel Cooper Freeman.
Walter had been a self-employed carpenter later working with his son, David, until his retirement. He enjoyed cutting and selling wood.
He is survived by two daughters, Kathleen Morion, of Hockley, Texas and Debbie (Tom) Morley, of Spencerport; and two sons, David (Linda) Freeman of Hamlin, N.Y. and Andy Freeman of Houston, Texas; 18 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Edith M. Higginbotham Freeman, whom he married March 7, 1936 and who died March 26, 2002; a daughter, Marge Smith; and a grandson, Randy Earl Howard.
A funeral will be held today, Nov. 9th, at 11 a.m. in the Spitzer Funeral Home, Sherman, with the Rev. Paul Sears, pastor of the First Baptist Church of Sherman, officiating.
Burial will be in the Sherman Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the Portland Rescue Squad or the American Heart Association.
Arrangements are by the Spitzer Funeral Home in Sherman.
Doris M. Rater Bentley
11/17/2006 - Doris M. Rater Bentley, 87, of Ripley, died peacefully with her loving family at her side on Nov. 8, 2006 at the home of her daughter, Linda Lowes.
She was born April 21, 1919 in Sherman, the daughter of the late Fred and Mary Booth Rater.
She was a 1938 graduate of Sherman Central School. As a homemaker, she enjoyed many hobbies including sewing, baking and oil painting.
She was a former member of Ladies Aid and the South Ripley Grange.
She is survived by two sons, Roger and Janet Bentley of Rocky Point, N.C. and Larry and Nancy Bentley of North East, Pa.; three daughters, Jane and Claude Henry of North East, Diane O Brien of Dunkirk and Linda and Jerry Lowes of Ripley; a sister, Marjorie Thorp of Ripley; a brother, Gordon Rater of Erie; 12 grandchildren, Terri Summerville, Michelle Henry, Michael Henry, Tedd Henry, Darlene McAninch, Kelly Adams, Denise Spencer, Lisa Hart, Preston Bentley, Jason Bentley, Ben Bentley, and Natalie Britt; and 19 great-grandchildren.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Everette G. Bentley, who died Nov. 7, 2001; a sister, Ethel Zohns; and a brother, Harold Rater.
Interment will be held privately in the Quincy Cemetery.
Memorial contributions are suggested to Hospice Chautauqua County, 4840 West Lake Road, Mayville, N.Y., 14757.

Robert E. Gross
11/17/2006 - Robert E. Gross of Hudson, Fla., died in Brooksville Hospice Center in Fla. on Nov. 5, 2006.
He was born Sept. 21, 1924 in Ripley, the son of the late Everon and Jessie (Redding) Gross. He served with the Army in 1945 where he was wounded in Italy and spent the next two years in Walter Reed Hospital.
He owned and operated several of his own businesses. He retired in 1980 and moved to Florida.
He enjoyed family, fishing and travel.
He is survived by one daughter, Donna Piazza, of Westfield; two sons, Joseph Gross, of Westfield and Edward Gross of Hudson, Fla.; 16 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; two brothers, Russell and Edward, both of Florida; and two sisters, Donna VanGiesen of Ripley and Shirley Gillespie of Westfield.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary, in 2002; and a son, Robert W. Gross, in 2004.
No funeral services will be observed.
