Linda J. Woodfield
Linda J. Woodfield, 51, of 175 Allen St., died at 4:48 p.m. Wednesday (Oct. 6, 1999) in WCA Hospital. A lifelong area resident, she was born Dec. 30, 1947, in Jamestown, the daughter of Joseph and Mayme Foazio Brunato.
She was a 1966 graduate of Jamestown High School and a 1968 graduate of Jamestown Business College. A homemaker, she had previosuly been employed for 25 years by the former Jamestown Fur Co. as a bookkeeper.
She was a member of St. James Catholic Church.
Besides her mother, she is survived by her husband, David P. Woodfield Sr., whom she married Sept. 25, 1976; a daughter, Amy Joelle Woodfield; a son, David P. Woodfield Jr., both at home; and a sister, Rosemary Crocoll of Dunkirk.
She was preceded in death by her father, Joseph Brunato, in 1977; and an infant son, Joey Woodfield. A Mass of Christian
Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday in St. James Catholic Church. Monsignor Antoine P. Attea, pastor, will be celebrant.
Burial will be in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday in the Lind Funeral Home where a Christain Wake Service will be lead by the Rev. Pat Fernandes at 3:30 p.m.
Catherine R. Bailey
DELAND, Fla. - Catherine R. Bailey, 92, formerly of 95 Boulevard Ave., Celoron, died at 10:45 p.m. Tuesday (Oct. 5, 1999) in the Florida Lutheran Nursing Home, DeLand. A Florida resident for the past 10 years, she was born May 28, 1907, in Myersdale, Pa., the daughter of Wallace H. and Mary Smith Records.
She was employed by the former Bigelow Department Store for 27 years and retired as a buyer in 1969.
She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Jamestown.
Surviving are a daughter, Sue Mong of DeLand; five grandchildren: James K. Bailey of Corning, N.Y., Kevin Bailey of Fredonia, Scott Bailey of Celoron, Kimberle S. Mong of Monrovia, Md., and Keith A. Mong of Derwood, Md.; four great-grandchildren; and a sister, Ellen Carlson of Jamestown.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Maxwell F. Bailey, whom she married Nov. 8, 1930, and who died Dec. 17, 1975; a son, James F. Bailey; a sister, Marian Becker; and two brothers: Robert and Vincent Records. The funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday in the Lind Funeral Home. The Rev. Kermit Hogenbloom, retired pastor, will officiate.
Burial will be in Sunset Hill Cemetery. No visitation will be observed. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.
James L. Grimes Sr.
James L. Grimes Sr., 71, formerly of 23 W. Third St., died at 3:40 a.m. Tuesday (Oct. 5, 1999) in Lutheran Social Services. An area resident the past 35 years, he was born Dec. 15, 1927, in Jasper, Tenn., the son of Benjamin and Lillian Brown Grimes. From 1946 to 1947, he served in the U.S. Army. Prior to retirement in 1989, he was employed by the former Jamestown Finishes for 23 years. He loved artwork and enjoyed drawing; was interested in small appliance repair, mostly televisions and VCRs; and was a lover and player of country music.
Surviving are his wife, Rosabelle Brown Grimes, whom he married April 11, 1970; two daughters: Jessie Delgado and Teresa Havers; a stepdaughter, Robin Dudek, all of Jamestown; six stepsons: Michael G. Hayes of Anchorage, Alaska, Patrick B. Hayes of Buffalo, Jerry K. Hayes of Albuquerque, N.M., Thoms F. Hayes of Jamestown, Timothy J. Hayes of Sinclairville, Sean G. Hayes, U.S. Air Force based in Texas; six grandchildren: Benjamin and Donna Grimes of New Hampshire, Tammy Franklin and Destiny Ward of Jamestown, Judith and Wesley K. Havers Jr. of Sinclairville; 23 stepgrandchildren; six great-grandchildren; a brother, Edward Grimes of Mio, Mich.; and a sister, Evabelle Boston of Jasper, Tenn.
He was preceded in death by a son, James L. Grimes Jr., in 1992; and a stepdaughter, Rita Mary Hayes, in 1981. The funeral will be at 1:30 p.m. today in the Lind Funeral Home. The Rev. Raymond L. Jackson, pastor of Calvary Baptist Church, will officiate.

Ricky A. Newell
CASSADAGA - Ricky A. Newell, 43, of Shumla Road, Cassadaga, died Wednesday (Oct. 6, 1999) in Brooks Memorial Hospital, Dunkirk.
He was born Jan. 27, 1956, in Westfield, the son of Frederick E. and the late Donna F. Miller Newell.
He was a 1974 graduate of Cassadaga Valley Central School and attended Jamestown Community College.
He was self-employed as a partner in the R.N. Construction Co. of Cassadaga.
He was a 25-year active member of the Cassadaga Volunteer Fire Department and was serving as chief. He held various offices within the department, including president.
He was a member of the Sons of America Legion Cassadaga Memorial Post 1280 and U.S. Jaycees Senator No. 39898. He also held several offices in the Cassadaga Area Jaycees, Region 9 Jaycees and New York State Jaycees.
He was an avid boater and fisherman.
Surviving are his wife of 14 years, Priscilla "Perk" Fox Newell, whom he married June 29, 1985; a daughter, Jennifer House Vahl of Sinclairville; a granddaughter, Cortney Vahl of Sinclairville; a brother, Jeffrey Newell of Busti; and a sister, Lori Johnson of Sinclairville. The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in the Jordan Funeral Home. The Rev. Walter Werbicki, chaplain, Lakeview Correctional Facility, will officiate.
Burial will be in Cassadaga Cemetery. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday in the funeral home.
Paul J. Swan
Paul J. Swan, 91, of Myrtle Street, died at 7 a.m. Wednesday (Oct. 6, 1999) in Manor Oak Skilled Nursing Facility. A lifelong resident, he was born Oct. 21, 1907, in West Ellicott, the son of Albert and Emma Malmquist Swan. He owned and operated Swan's Kendall Station for 41 years, retiring April 1, 1975.
He was a member of the Zion Covenant Church, where he was a former trustee and member of the B-6 Bible Class.
He was a member of the Gideons and the American Scandinavian Heritage Foundation.
He was on the board of the Rescue Mission and was a volunteer with the Thru The Bible Radio Network in Pasadena, Calif., for 11 years.
Surviving are his wife, Ethel Thorsell Swan, whom he married April 7, 1937; a son, the Rev. James R. Swan of Jamestown; a daughter, Martha E. Bookhout of Hyde Park, N.Y.; two grandchildren: Dr. Thomas Bookhout of Rhinebeck, N.Y., and Jodi Rathjen of Clinton Corners, N.Y.; and five great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two brothers: Erwin Swan, in 1985, and Glenn Swan, in 1987. The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in the Lind Funeral Home. The Rev. Michael L. White, pastor; the Rev. Eldon H. Johnson, pastor emiritus; and the Rev. David H. Vennberg, visitation pastor, all of Zion Covenant Church, will officiate.

C. Gordon Aldrich
ASHVILLE- C. Gordon Aldrich, 88, of 4956 Route 474, Ashville, died at 11:43 p.m. Wednesday (Oct. 6, 1999) in Westfield Health Care Center.
He was born Sept. 20, 1911, in Jefferson, Ohio, the son of Amasa Floyd and Crestella Gordon Aldrich.
He was a 1929 graduate of Conneaut High School and the General Electric Technical School and its apprentice program.
He was employed by General Electric in Erie, Sylvania in Warren and was president of Aldrich Manufacturing Corp. in Sugar Grove for several years.
He was a member of Musicians Local 134 in Jamestown, playing piano and organ in several combos in the Jamestown and Warren area and for many years on the Chautauqua Belle.
He was a member of the Mission Covenant Church in Sugar Grove and the Thule Lodge 127. Since 1920, he was an amateur radio operator with the call letters W31SR and a member of the RACES Ham Radio Club. He had been a beekeeper for several years.
Surviving are his wife, Sonya Gustafson Aldrich, whom he married Aug. 4, 1983; three daughters: Kathleen Cutshall of Conneaut, Ohio, and Frances Perrin and Sharon Aldrich, both of Warren; a son, John Aldrich of Warren; five grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and a sister, Arlene Rapp of Warren. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday in Mission Covenant Church, Sugar Grove. The Rev. Jerry Lang, pastor, will officiate. Louis J. Gagliano
QUEENSBURY, N.Y.- Louis J. Gagliano, 82, formerly of Jamestown, died Tuesday (Oct. 5, 1999) in Queensbury.
He was born Aug. 4, 1917, in Jamestown, the son of Samuel F. and Josephine Mangiamele Gagliano.
He was a graduate of the University of Chicago and had been employed by Hercules Corp., retiring in 1979.
Surviving are his wife of 54 years, Mary Wooley Gagliano; a daughter, Donna Gagliano of New Castle, Del.; three sons: Samuel Gagliano of Glens Falls, N.Y., Louis Gagliano of North Royalton, Ohio, and Philip Gagliano of South Glens Falls, N.Y.; six grandchildren; a great-grandson; and a brother, Peter Gagliano of Jamestown.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Samuel Gagliano; and two sisters: Carrie Gamgene and Anna Mangiamele. The funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday in Christ First United Methodist Church, Bay Street, Glens Falls. The Rev. Thurman Beavers will officiate.

Robert D. Underwood Sr.
RANDOLPH- Robert D. Underwood Sr., 90, of 12338 W. Main St., died at 2:10 p.m. Thursday (Oct. 7, 1999) in his home. Born April 18, 1909, in Napoli, he was the son of Lynn and Ida Potter Underwood.
He was a self-employed logger and was employed by the New York State Fish Hatchery in Randolph and the town of Randolph Highway Department, retiring June 29, 1979.
He was a member of Grace Episcopal Church in Randolph and the Randolph American Legion 181. An avid flier and aircraft restorer, he was a member of the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association and the Experimental Aircraft Association.
Surviving are two sons: Robert D. Underwood Jr. of Martinsville, Ind., and James Underwood of Austin, Texas; five grandchildren: John Underwood of Okinawa, Marie Underwood of Toledo, Ohio, Scott Underwood of Binghamton and Danny and Lisa Underwood, both of St. Petersburg, Fla.
He was preceded in death by his wife, the former Lucille Jerrett Underwood, whom he married Aug. 24, 1946, and who died Sept. 15, 1999; and a sister, Pauline Waite, in 1985. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday in the Grace Episcopal Church, Randolph. The Rev. W. David P. Knoves, pastor, will officiate.
