Eleanor M. Daley
1/29/02 WESTFIELD, NY - Eleanor M. Daley, 80, of Grove Street, Westfield, died Jan. 29 in the Erie County Medical Center. She was born June 10, 1921, in Lancaster, the daughter of Oscar J. and Mary C. Sugg Gerber. She had been employed by Hodgson, Russ, Goodyear & Andrews as a bookkeeper. She is survived by a daughter, Denise Livingstone; five grandchildren, Joanna, Sarah, Allison, Kimberly and Debra; four great-grandchildren; a brother, Donald Gerber; and a sister, Clara DelaRosa. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert H. Daley; a son Douglas Mark; and two sisters, Doris Gerber and Lorraine Kribe. Memorials may be made to the Fredonia Volunteer Fire Department, 80 W. Main Street, Fredonia, N.Y., 14063. Arrangements are by the Zurbrick-Amigone Funeral Home in Lancaster.

Emily Potter Boell
3/30/02 MAYVILLE, NY - Emily Potter Boell, 95, of the Lutheran Retirement Home in Jamestown, formerly of Mayville, died March 30 in WCA Hospital in Jamestown. She was born Nov. 17, 1906 in Trenton, N.J., the daughter of the late Austin and Eleanor Studdiford Cooley. She was a graduate of Wilson College in Chambersburg, Pa. She was a member of the Hurlbut Memorial Community Church in Chautauqua, the Jamestown Audubon Society and a former member of the Mayville Tuesday Club. She is survived by one daughter, Eleanor P. Doud of Panama; one son, Richard G. Potter of Denton, N.C.; five grandchildren, Wendy P. Hagerty of Asheboro, N.C., Stephanie P. Queen of Stoney Creek, N.C., Cynthia P. Cox of Randleman, N.C., Andrew J. Doud of Rocky River, Ohio and Brian D. Doug of Knightdale, N.C; two great-grandsons; two stepchildren, Lilian Klein of Black Mt., N.C. and Rev. Robert P. Boell of Corning; three step grandsons, Robert Klein of Black Mt., Jonathan Klein of Black Mt. and Richard Maness of Randleman, N.C.; and two step-great grandsons. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Rev. James G. Potter; her second husband, Rev. Robert B. Boell; and a brother, Dr. Samuel S. Cooley. A private family service will be held at the convenience of the family. The Rev. Robert P. Boell will officiate. Burial will be in the Chautauqua Cemetery. No visitation will be observed. Memorials may be made to the Jamestown Audubon Society, Hurlbut Memorial Community Church, or the Lutheran Social Services. The Freay Funeral Home in Mayville is in charge of arrangements.

Frank Barney
3/27/02 CLYMER, NY - Frank R. “Bill” Barney, 87, of Clymer-Sherman Road, died March 27 in The Waters of Westfield. He was born May 23, 1914, in Girard, Pa., the son of Frank H. and Agnes Hannah Barney. He had owned and operated a potato farm in Girard and Sherman from the late 1930s through the early 1960s. He was also a maple syrup producer for more than 50 years and owned Barney’s Pancake House in Sherman. He served as supervisor for the town of Sherman for 20 years and was founder of the Sherman Rod and Gun Club. He had been involved with the Sportsman Federation, a former member of the Clymer Conservation Club, a 4-H Leader and taught a Hunters Safety Course for many years. He was a member of the Olive Lodge 575 F&AM, the Ancient Scottish Rite in Jamestown, where he was a 32nd Degree Mason and was a Shriner. He enjoyed hunting and fishing. He is survived by two sons, Frank Lee Barney of Sherman and James Barney of sun Prairie, Wisc.; a daughter, Edith Stansbury of Sherman; eight grandchildren, Teresa Barney of Alexandria, Va., Jill Hejza of South Dayton, Tina Hricko of Perkiomenville, Pa., Grisel Rater of Sherman, Richard and Fred Barney, both of Atlanta, Jason Backus of Westfield and Kristin Bridgeman of Sun Prairie, Wisc.; and 11 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Beatrice “Betty” Harned Barney, whom he married Dec. 15, 1938 and who died May 12, 1992; two brothers, Lynn and Leroy Barney; and two sisters, helen Buesink and Mildred Hawk. Burial will be held at the convenience of the family. Memorials may be made to the Stanley Hose Fire Company. The Spitzer Funeral Home in Sherman is in charge of arrangements.

Edith M. Freeman
3/26/02 PORTLAND, NY - Edith M. Freeman, 81, of Fuller Road, Portland, died March 26 in Westfield Memorial Hospital. She was born May 8, 1920 in Akron, Ohio, the daughter of Floyd and Maude Lee Higginbotham. She loved quilting and computers, and also enjoyed reading, embroidering and gardening. She is survived by her husband, Walter Freeman of Portland, whom she married March 7, 1936; three daughters, Marge Smith of Union City, Pa., Kathleen Marion of Hockley, Texas, and Debbie Morley of Spencerport; two sons, Dave Freeman of Hamlin and Andy Freeman of Houston; 18 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; and a brother, Jack Higginbotham of Mississippi. She was preceded in death by a grandson, Randy Earl Howard, who died Sept. 28, 1958; three brothers, Francis Higginbotham, who died March 14, 1945, John Higginbotham, who died Oct. 15, 1970 and Fred Higginbotham, who died April 26, 1985; and a sister, Virchie Kelley, who died May 27, 1989. Burial will be in the Sherman Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Portland Rescue Squad or the American Heart Association. The Spitzer Funeral Home in Sherman is in charge of arrangements.

Hazel Eddy
1/25/02 BROCTON, NY - Hazel W. Eddy, 90, formerly of Lake Avenue, Brocton, died Jan. 25 in The Waters of Westfield Nursing Home, where she had been a resident since June of 1998. She was born Jan. 12, 1912, in Breedtown, Pa., the daughter of David and Lillie Strawbridge Warner. She retired in 1984 from the Westfield Memorial Hospital, where she was an aide in the kitchen. She was a member of the Brocton Free Methodist Church. Surviving are two daughters, Donna Delcamp of Stockton and Joanne Goulding of Brocton; six grandchildren, David Delcamp of Tennessee, Mark Delcamp of Falconer, Daniel Delcamp of Stockton, James Goulding of Falconer, Doreen Hammond of Dewittville and Joy Wood of Brocton; 11 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and a brother, Willard Warner of Titusville, Pa. She was preceded in death by four brothers, Leonard, Earl, Robert and Ralph Warner; and five sisters, Mary Krantz, Florence Cawley, Violet Warner, Myrtle Warner and Bertha Reninger. Interment will be in Portland Evergreen Cemetery. The Morse Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Helen Keller
1/30/02 RUSSELL, PA - Helen L. Keller, 80, of Cottage Place, Russell, Pa., formerly of Warren, died Jan. 30 in Warren General Hospital. She was born Aug. 16, 1921, in Grosse Tete, La., the daughter of Eugene Roy and Betty Bankston Leigh. She had been employed by Warren General Hospital as a transcriptionist in the medical records department. She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church. She is survived by her husband, James A. Keller, whom she marred June 29, 1948 in Grosse Tete; a daughter, Kathy Keller-Jones of Chautauqua; two sons, James S. Keller of Baton Rouge, La. and David J. Keller of Riverside, Calif.; three grandchildren; a brother, Van Leigh of Monroe, La.; and a sister, Bettye Davis of Baton Rouge. She was preceded in death by a brother, Roy E. Leigh. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association. The Peterson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Katherine E. Smith
7/26/02 CORRY, PA - Katherine Elizabeth Smith, 91, of Corry, died July 26 in Corry Memorial Hospital. She was born June 4, 1911 in McKlean, Pa., the daughter of the late Squire Ralph and Florabelle Kemp Mallery. She was raised and educated in McKlean and Lottsville, Pa. and graduated from Lottsville High School in 1929. She was a member of the Marantha Full Gospel Fellowship, Bear Lake, Pa. She was very active in the church, being a former Sunday School teacher and choir member among other activities. She was a devoted mother and homemaker. She enjoyed being a volunteer for the Rouse House in Warren County, where she was awarded a certificate for giving over 1,000 hours of volunteer service. She also enjoyed gardening, sewing and spending time with her family. She is survived by two daughters, Mary Ellen Jaquith of Corry and Ruby Nelson of Columbus, Pa.; three sons, Thomas P. Smith of Panama, Samuel A. Smith of Corry and Perry Smith of Gold Canyon, Ariz.; 12 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and three great-great grandchildren. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas L. Smith, whom she married May 1, 1929; two sisters, Evelyn Rich and Mildred Davis; one brother, Paul Mallery; and a grandson, Jeff Smith. Burial will be in Lottsville Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Marantha Full Gospel Church, Bear Lake, Pa., 16402 or the Missionary Amy Jen, 321 W. 13 Court, Bloomington, Ind., 47404-3341. The Bracken Funeral Home in Corry is in charge of arrangements.

Marilyn “Sue” Chiesi
1/31/02 RIPLEY, NY - Marilyn “Sue” Chiesi, 55, of Ripley, died suddenly at home on Jan. 31. She was born in Buffalo on Jan. 25, 1946, the daughter of Rita Dzwigal (nee Pilarski) and the late Florian J. Miller of Buffalo. She was a 1967 graduate of Sisters Hospital School of Nursing. Her religious affiliations included St. Thomas More Roman Catholic Church and she served with the Catholic Youth Organization (1960-62). She was also a member of the Mount Mercy Alumni Association. She was a registered nurse and was employed at various facilities during her career including Roswell Park Cancer Center (1967-70), Erie County Public Health (1969-73), Rondale Nursing Home, Erie, Pa. (1974-77), Hooper-Holmes Inc. (1981-82), and Chautauqua County Public Health in Mayville (1979-80). She was an avid reader and news buff and enjoyed playing pinochle and jeopardy, shopping and spending time with her dogs, “Coach” and “Disney.” Survivors include her spouse, Ralph P. Chiesi, whom she married in Buffalo on Nov. 26, 1970; three daughters, Danielle R. Chiesi of Rochester, Stephanie Chiesi Reh of Port Byron and Veronica R. Chiesi of Rochester; one sister, Wende R. Tarquin of Middleburg, Fla.; and three brothers, David J. Miller, Florian Mendel and Brian K. Mendel, all of Buffalo. A memorial service will be celebrated in Ripley at a date to be announced. Burial will be in St. Stanislaus Cemetery in Cheektowaga. Arrangements are through the Amigone Funeral Home of Buffalo.

Mary F. Raymond
3/31/02 BROCTON, NY - Mary F. Raymond, 84, of East Main Street, Brocton, died March 31 in the Chautauqua County Home. She was born Nov. 27, 1917, in Fredonia, the daughter of Roy and Myrea Utegg Sherman. She was a graduate of Brocton High School and a graduate of the former Dunkirk Business School. She was a retired office manager for the former Huntley Mfg. Co. of Brocton for 46 years, retiring in 1982. She is survived by her husband, Glenn L. Raymond Sr., whom she married in 1939, a son, Glenn A. “Jack” Raymond of Brocton; a daughter, Jill Dodge of Big Flats; three grandchildren, Jon Raymond of Rochester, Lindy Raymond of Fredonia and Glenn Dodge of Parma, Idaho; and a great-grandson. Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association. The Morse Funeral Home in Brocton is in charge of arrangements.
