4/6/2006 - H. Joel Lucas, 53, of Brockway Road, Ripley, died March 30, 2006 at Roswell Park in Buffalo after a courageous battle with cancer.
He was born June 25, 1956 in Corning, the son of Herbert A. and Suzanne Lucas of Himrod and Joanne Cole of Waterloo.
He was a veteran of the Vietnam War having served with the U.S. Army from 1971 to 1973. During that time, he was a military policeman and a sentry dog handler. He was employed by the Carriage House in Dunkirk from 2000 until the time of his illness. He was a member of the VFW in Westfield and the American Legion in Big Flats. He enjoyed fishing, turkey hunting and gardening.
Besides his parents, he is survived by his wife, Debra Laughlin Lucas, whom he married January 7, 1978; his son, Joshua J. Lucas of Mayville; two grandchildren, Maeson and Joshua D. Lucas of Campbell, N.Y., Wesley Lucas of Corning and Claude and Stacy Lucas of Savona; four sisters, Michelle and Kerry Fuller of Beaver Dam, N.Y., Lisa Beach, Kristen and Tom Cleveland and Stephanie and Marvin Cleveland, all of Campbell; and several nieces and nephews.

Irene Jankowski
4/6/2006 - Irene M. Jankowski, 86, of Dunkirk, died April 2, 2006 at Brooks Memorial Hospital in Dunkirk.
She was born Feb. 27, 1920 in Forestville, the daughter of the late Phillip and Martha (Bartkowski) Burgun.
At one time, she was an employee of the former Van Raalte Corporation and a waitress at Card's Restaurant in Fredonia.
Memberships included St. Hedwig's R.C. Church, past president of the former Mothers Club at St. Hedwig's and the Birthday Club. She loved gardening, her family, children, great-grandchildren, as well as her dog, Lady Diana.
Survivors include her husband of 62 years, Arthur M. Jankowski of Dunkirk, whom she married Sept. 11, 1943; children, Carol and Richard Jakubczyk, James and Janice Jankowski, Elaine and Sam Epolito, Rodney Jankowski, Rick and Rae Jankowski, all of Dunkirk; a sister, Ethel Tylock of Forestville, Lucille Cobb of Fredonia, Ray and Rita Burgun, William and Louise Burgun, both of Brocton; eight grandchildren, Janet Jankowswki-George, James Jankowski Jr., Jodi Marrale, Amanda Hatim, Jamie Mekus, Ryan Mekus, Jordan Jankowski, Jacob Jankowski; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, stepfather, Glenn Harde; and brothers Andy Sikorski and Albert Burgun.
Interment will follow in St. Hedwig's Cemetery.

Alexander Spoto
4/6/2006 - Alexander A. Spoto, 90, of Lancaster, N.Y. for the past three years and formerly an 80-year resident of Brocton died April 1, 2006 at the Greenfield Health and Rehabilitation Center of Lancaster.
He was born in Brant on July 1, 1915, the son of the late Carl and Rosario Giordano Spoto. He was a retired employee from the Depew Paving Company of Depew where he had been a foreman and was a member of Laborers Union of Buffalo and a former employee of Niagara Therapy Manufacturing, formerly of Brocton. He also was past vice president of the Brocton Preserving Co., a family-owned business.
He was a member of St. Patrick's Church of Brocton and a former member of its parish council board and former member of the Knights of Columbus. His hobbies included bowling, playing golf and gardening.
He is survived by one son, Carl Spoto of Bergen; two daughters, Alexis A. Zolczer of Orchard Park and Michele Langendorfer of Elma; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; one brother, Dr. Russell Spoto of Thousand Oaks, Calif.; three sisters, Marian Spoto of Falconer, Sara Morgan of Jamestown and Felicia Spera of Jamestown.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Dorothy Lombardo Spoto, whom he married Nov. 1941 and who died in 1979; his second wife, Krene Kuzenski Spoto, who preceded him in death in 1996; and one sister, Diane Millonzi.
Burial will be at Holy Trinity Cemetery, Dunkirk.

Brunislaw J. Kalka
4/6/2006 - Brunislaw J. Kalka 79 of Harrington Hill Rd., Clymer died March 29, 2006 in the Beverly Health Care-Western Reserve, Erie, Pa.
He was born May 18, 1926 in Bay City, Michigan, the son of the late Brunislaw J. and Wladyslaw Cichack Kalka.
Following his graduation from high school, he worked in the lumber industry in Michigan and later as a Foreman for Modern Warehouse in South Bend Indiana.
He enjoyed fishing and crafts.
Surviving are three sons Robert J. and Brunislaw Kalka Jr. of Erie, Pa., Harry Kalka of Jamestown; two daughters Luella (Ann) Cushman of Clymer and Lottie McClanahan of Erie, Pa.; two stepsons Lyle and Charles Cushman of Michigan; three grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife Ella Bohan Kalka whom he married February 13, 1959 and died May 6, 1997; a stepson James Cushman and several brothers and sisters.
Burial will be in St. Matthias Cemetery.

Mildred A. Tartaglia
4/6/2006 - Mildred A. "Millie" Tartaglia, 84, of the Frewsburg Rest Home, formerly of Panama and Riverhead, died March 28, 2006 in WCA Hospital after a brief illness.
An area resident the past nine years, she was born March 6, 1922 in Lynn, Mass., the daughter of the late Gaetano Savio and Ella Lothrop Couchie.
She was a U.S. Army Women's Army Corps (WACS) veteran of World War II, serving from 1943 to 1945 as a skilled airplane mechanic in Tucson, Ariz. and Amarillo, Tex.
She was a communicant of St. James Catholic Church, and was a member of Samuel Derby Post 556 American Legion of Frewsburg, and the Disabled American Veterans and Veterans of Foreign Wars posts in Riverhead, N.Y.
Millie enjoyed reading, drawing, and spending time with family and friends. She participated in many activities including bowling and bingo at the Frewsburg Rest Home, and had a passion for making people laugh. She will be sadly missed by all who knew her.
Surviving are three daughters: Ellen Quinlan of Gaithersburg, Md., Gloria Swiatocha of Riverhead, N.Y., and Sandra Tartaglia of Ohio; a son, Robert Tartaglia of Brookhaven, N.Y.; five grandchildren: Michael Quinlan, Jr. of Washington, Michelle Whitman of Panama, Anthony Tartaglia of Ohio, Danielle Swiatocha of N.Y., and Melissa Swiatocha of Kentucky; and three great-grandsons: Steven Whitman of Panama, and Jake and Gabe Tartaglia of Ohio.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Salvatore A. Tartaglia, whom she married Jan. 30, 1943, and who died April 14, 1966; and by a brother, Frederick Voit.
Burial will be in Sunset Hill Cemetery.

Elizabeth G. Bray
4/6/2006 - Elizabeth G. Bray, 87, of Pinellas Park, Fla., formerly of Ripley, died March 25, 2006 at her home.
She was born Jan. 12, 1919 in Buffalo, the daughter of the late Ralph and Helen Eggleston Hills.
Mrs. Bray was a line worker for 35 years for the former Landsmith Cherry Factory in Ripley. She was a member of the Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge #118 in Westfield and the Ripley Merchants League. She enjoyed playing cards, traveling and bowling. Her greatest love was for raising her family.
Surviving are her son, Leslie and Crystal Bray of North East; five daughters, Charlotte and Dale Kincaid Durrance of North East, Shirley and Richard Winkleman of Ripley, Connie and Herbert Schultz of Westfield, Susan and Timothy Graham of Pinellas Park, Fla. and Nancy Ackley of Jamestown; 15 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; a brother, Ronald Hills; and a sister, Ann Keith, both of Anaheim, Calif.; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Lester Bray, on June 8, 1991; and a brother, Richard Hills.
Friends are invited to attend a graveside service in the Quincy Cemetery on April 8th at 11:30 a.m.

Virginia Slate
4/6/2006 - Virginia Lucille Slate, 65, of West Lake Road, Van Buren, formerly of Westfield, died, March 27, 2006 at Brooks Memorial Hospital with her family by her side.
Virginia was born on May 20, 1940 in Brocton, the beautiful daughter of Frank T. Slate, Sr. of Westfield and the late Beatrice R. (Sclafani) Slate.
A resident of the Pomfret IRA group home for the past 14 years, Virginia loved to shop, attend Mass, eat out and sing; her favorite song being "How much is that doggie in the window." Virginia won a beautiful baby contest at age 3. Shortly thereafter, she was stricken with an illness that left her handicapped. She loved it when her family visited, occasionally going on camping weekends at Letchworth State Park. She expected spaghetti for dinner and ice cream for dessert. Grapes or a candy bar always brought a smile.
Mrs. Slate was a member of St. Patrick's Roman Catholic Church of Brocton
She is survived by her father Frank T. Slate of Westfield; her two sisters, Maryann V. (James) Jeffries of Toledo, Ohio and Sandra R. (John) Cunningham of Westfield; and four brothers: Frank T. Slate, Jr. of Fredonia, Timothy M. (Susan) Slate of Fredonia, Donald M. (Sally) Slate of Courtney, and Edward J. Slate of Westfield.
Virginia is also survived by her roommate, Gloria, and her caregivers; Tammy, Cindy, Darlene, Amanda, Nancy, Mary, Peter, and Heidi, as well as by her friends, Elizabeth, Debbie, Irene and Mary Rose.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Beatrice (Sclafani) Slate, who died on April 8, 2001.
Interment will be at Portland Evergreen Cemetery.

David C. Crandall
4/6/2006 - David C. Crandall, 85, of Bradenton, Fla., died April 1, 2006 at Blake Medical Center in Bradenton.
He was born to a cattle dealer in Dewittville on June 9, 1920, the only child of Clyde Carey and Georgia (Colby) Crandall.
David served four years with the Army in Europe during World War II. In November 1945, he married his sweetheart, Oleta Mae Loomis. David and Oleta had three daughters, Patricia, and identical twins, Marilyn May and Carolyn Kay. David was a carpenter and partner in a homebuilder group in Westfield. Due to harsh winters, he moved his family to Bradenton in 1959. After over 30 years as a letter carrier, he retired from the United States Post Office in Manatee County.
David and Oleta moved to Westminster Towers on Wares Creek in downtown Bradenton in 2001 where they enjoyed the beautiful scenery and many walks along the water. His beloved Oleta went to be with Jesus three years later. David continued to develop many friendships at the Towers. David was an avid reader, loved to travel and walk outdoors. He was a devoted Christian and member of Calvary Baptist Church. He was a deacon and worked with the finances and used his carpentry expertise.
David was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 58 years, Oleta, in September 2004; and is survived by three daughters, Patricia and Johnny Caldwell of Bradenton, Carolyn and Dale Hays of Chattanooga, Tenn. and Marilyn and Rick Speece of Bradenton; nine grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Marlene and Bud Robbins of Westfield, Alice Wannenwetsch of Milford, Ohio and Jean Loomis of Tavares, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.

Helen L. Sinden
4/6/2006 - Helen L. Sinden, 83, of Carris Road, Ripley, died March 28, 2006 at Hamot Medical Center in Erie, Pa.
She was born Sept. 25, 1922 in Brockway, Pa., the daughter of the late Albin and Ebba Cedargren Lindholm.
A graduate of Jamestown High School, Mrs. Sinden was employed for several years by the former Rice's Variety Store. She was a member of the Ripley United Methodist Church and the Ripley Literary Club. She enjoyed sewing and crafts and was an avid traveler who enjoyed wintering in Sebring, Fla.
She is survived by her son, Jerry and Elaine Sinden of Frederick, Md.; a daughter, Karen and Tom Smith of Ripley; grandchildren, Michael and Cynthia Sinden, Thomas Smith, Holly Mineard, Kimberly Maring and Alesa Smith; and three great-grandchildren.
Besides her grandchildren, she was preceded in death by her husband, Maurice F. Sinden, on Sept. 19, 1991; and a granddaughter, Paula Smith, in 1979.
Interment will be held in the Quincy Cemetery.
