Mary Montopoli Burns

Mary Montopoli Burns, 83 years of Elcor Health Services (formerly of Corning), died Monday, March 21, 2005 at St. Joseph’s Hospital.
She was born February 11, 1922 in Corning, NY, the daughter of the late John and Donetta Pietro Mizzoni. A lifetime resident of Corning and a graduate of St. Mary’s Catholic School and Corning Free Academy.
Mary and Carmen A. Montopoli were married June 22, 1940, he predeceased her in 1951. Her second marriage was to Edward F. Burns whom she married in 1964 and he predeceased her in 1991.
She was a member of All Saints Parish, attending St. Patrick’s Church and was active within her church community and the Anawin House of Prayer.
Mary was a loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother and will be truly missed by her family.
Surviving two sons; Jerome P. (Nancy) Montopoli of Bonita Springs, FL and Duane C. (Barbara) Montopoli of North Andover, MA. Three Granddaughters; Ashley Montopoli, Christine Montopoli and Lorraine (Matthew) Caiazzo. Three Grandsons; Brian Montopoli, Mark Montopoli and Scott Montopoli. Brother; Richard (Mary) Mizzoni of Corning, NY. Also several nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was predeceased by son; Quentin Montopoli, sister; Barbara Costello and brother; Nicholas Mizzoni.
Friends may call at the Haughey Funeral Home, 216 E. First St, Corning, NY, Thursday, March 24, 2005 from 4-7 pm. A Liturgical Service will be held Friday, March 25, 2005 10:00am at the funeral home, followed by Prayer Services at 10:30am St. Mary’s Church, Corning, NY. Committal Prayers and Interment will be held at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Corning, NY.
The family would appreciate Memorial Donations be given in Mary’s name to Anawin House of Prayer, 122 East First St, Corning, NY 14830.

Blaze Merola
Bath, NY
Blaze A. Merola, 85, of Dayspring II Apts, Corning, NY, died Friday, March 18, 2005 at the Bath VA Hospital.
He was born January 26, 1920 in Corning, NY, the son of the late Anthony and Mary Zino Merola. A lifetime resident of the area, he was a graduate of the Corning School System.
He served with the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1938 and was a veteran of the United States Army, serving during World War II at the Battle of the Buldge (1943-45).
Blaze and Eleanor Lorraine Bogardus-Clark Morse were married October 3, 1959 in Corning, NY. She predeceased him April 17, 1996.
He was retired from the Corning/Painted Post School District Maintenance Department, and then he and his wife Lorraine, operated Merola’s Tavern in both Watkins Glen, NY and on Market Street, Corning, NY, for over 15 years.
He was a member of All Saints Parish, attending St. Mary’s Church, a lifetime member of the VFW, a member of the Marconi Lodge, loved to cook, and in his early years enjoyed boxing. Blaze enjoyed his social time with all of his friends and workers at the Crystal City Bakery, the Corning Foodmart, Faulisi’s Newsstand, and the residents of Dayspring II.
He is survived by Step-sons; Robert (Jeannie) Morse of Dunedin, FL. Gerald (Ruth) Morse of Caton, NY, and Ronald (Kay) Morse of Painted Post, NY. Step-daughter; Gail Scanlon of Tarpon Springs, FL. Step Son-in-law; Samuel Chilson Sr. of Dunedin, FL, Sister-in-law; Sophie Merola of Corning, nephews; Nicholas, Joseph and Tony Merola all of Corning. Also several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by step-daughter; Virginia "Ginny" Chilson, brothers; Nicholas and Joseph Merola, and sister; Mary Merola Corcoran.
Friends may call at the Haughey Funeral Home, 216 E. First St, Corning, NY, Saturday, April 2, 2005 from 1-3pm. A Funeral Service will be held at the conclusion of Calling hours, 3 pm. Interment will be at a later date in Bath National Cemetery.

Joyce Hudson
Corning, NY
Joyce R. Hudson of 73 Pleasant Street, died Tuesday, March 15, 2005 at her home.
She was born in Boise, Idaho, the daughter of the late Lyle and Marie Voss Rowell. A graduate of Boise High School, Joyce then went on to John Hopkins University School of Nursing graduating in 1944.
She is a veteran of the United States Navy, and was stationed in Oakland, CA and served aboard the USS General William Mitchell, and was the first cadet nurse commissioned into the Navy Nurse Corps. In 1953, while stationed in the Philippines, she met and married her husband Frank P. Hudson. He predeceased her June 9, 1968.
Joyce was employed from Corning Community College Nursing Department as an audio-visual aid, retiring in 1986.
She was a member of All Saints Parish, attending St. Vincent de Paul Church, Corning Hospital Chapter D, a member of St. Patrick’s School Board, and the committee for the Christmas Tree Fair.
She is survived by daughters; Anne H. Horn of Corning, NY, and Eileen (Steven) Kremer of Big Flats, NY. Sons; Patrick (Carol) Hudson of PT Huron, MI, and Michael (Bridget) Hudson of Buffalo, NY. Grandchildren; Kevin & Katherine Kremer, Colleen & Frank Hudson, and William & Timothy Hudson. Brother; Jack L. (Addie) Rowell of Boise, ID.
Friends may call at the Haughey Funeral Home, 216 E. First St, Corning, NY, Friday, March 18, 2005 from 4-6 pm. A Funeral Mass will be held Saturday, March 19, 2005 at 9:30am at St. Vincent de Paul Church, Corning, NY. Anne H. Horn 53 years of 12 Brown Rd., Corning, NY and summer home on Seneca Lake, Hector, NY died Monday October 8, 2007 at her residence at Seneca Lake.
She was born at the U.S. Naval Base Subic Bay, Philippines, July 21, 1954 the daughter of the late Frank P. and Joyce R. Hudson. She came to the Corning area in 1966, graduating from St. Patrick’s Catholic School and Corning Painted Post East High School. She had attended Mercyhurst College, Erie, PA.
Anne and John T. Horn were married May 15, 1976 in St. Patrick’s Church, Corning, NY. John was the love of her life. They enjoyed many trips and cruises together as well as quiet time at the lake. He predeceased her in 2002.
She had been employed with the Wheat Agency of Corning, NY and Norwest Mortgage Co. of Horseheads, NY.
Anne served as the Commissioner of the Mapes-Matthews Rd. Association, Hector, NY.
She enjoyed Art and was an avid Bird watcher, esp. her interest in the Peregrine Falcons in Rochester, NY.
Surviving her Sister; Eileen M. (Steven) Kremer of Big Flats, NY., Brothers, Patrick F. (Carol) Hudson of Port Huron, MD. and Michael P. (Bridget) Hudson of Buffalo, NY. Nieces, Katherine Kramer, Erin Hudson, Colleen Hudson, Natalie K. Henkel. Nephews; Kevin Kremer, William Hudson, Timothy Hudson, Frank Hudson and Michael Henkel and many cousins. Uncles; James (Elaine) Hudson of North Brunswick, NJ., Robert Hudson of Belmar, NJ., John "Jack" (Trina) Kelley of Painted Post, NY., Thomas P. (Mary Ann) Kelley of Kenzington, MD and Lawrence (Ann) Kelley of Lakeland, Fl. Sisters in law; Martha K. (Thomas) Barnes of Springdale, AR., Rebecca (Norman) Rebenstorf of Tucson, AZ., Anne B. John Ferreira
Painted Post, NY
John J. Ferreira, 81 years of Deerland Ave, died Tuesday, March 15, 2005 at his home.
He was born March 15, 1924 in Corning, the son of the late Joaquim and Rose Goyas Ferreira. A lifetime resident of the area and a graduate of Corning Free Academy (Class of 1942). After high school, John joined the United States Navy to serve as a Radio 2nd Class during World War II.
John and Doris J. Fitzsimmons were married December 6, 1958 in Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, Painted Post, NY.
He was a retiree (1986) of the Personnel Department with Corning Incorporated.
John was a member of All Saints Parish, attending Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, a past union representative with the Corning Flint Glass Workers Union Local 1000, a lifetime member of the VFW, a member of the Elks Club #1071, and also a member of the Indian Hills Golf Club.
John was a loving and dedicated husband and father. He was an avid golfer and will truly be missed by all who knew him.
Among survivors are his wife Doris, sons; John J.(Anita) Ferreira Jr. of Naugatuck CT, Michael (Deb) Ferreira of Corning, NY and daughters; Lisa Miller of Maryland, and Meribeth Ferreira of Corning, NY, 7 grandchildren, and 3 great grandchildren, also several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his brother Joseph Ferreira, and sister; Mary Ferreira.

A Prayer Service will be held at the funeral home, Friday, March 18, 2005 at 9:00 am, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, 9:30am. Committal Prayers, Interment and Full Military Honors will be held at the family plot of St. Mary’s Cemetery.

Adrian Smith
Horseheads, NY
Adrian F. Smith, 94 years, formerly of 79 E. Fifth Street, Corning, died Tuesday, March 15, 2005 at Elcor Health Services.
He was born October 5, 1910 in Catlin, NY, the son of the late Walter and Edith Canfield Smith. He was a graduate of Northisde High School and was employed by Corning, Incorporated, retiring from Sullivan Park. He received his 75th Year Service Pin in 2003. He was a member of the Elks, Corning Lodge # 1071.
He is survived by his step-daughter; Susan Abel (James E.) Bassney of Summerfiled, FL, two step-grandchildren; John N. White III of Denver, CO, and Stephanie (Todd) Seelye of Elmira Heights, NY and two step-great granddaughters; Madison Jeanne and Reagan Elizabeth Seelye, also of Elmira Heights, NY. His brothers; Roy (Judy) Smith of Boynton Beach, FL, Raymond (Eileen) Smith of Gansevoort, NY, Harold (Nancy) Smith of Penn Yan, NY and sister; Arberta Lane of Ithaca, NY. He was predeceased by his wife, Jeanne Abel Smith, sisters; Ruth Mattison and Mildred Stuckey, and brothers; William Smith and George J. Smith.
Friends may call at the Haughey Funeral Home, 216 E. First St, Corning, NY, on Saturday, March 19, 2005 from 11am-1 pm. A Lodge of Sorrow will be held at 12:30pm. A Funeral Service will be held at the conclusion of calling hours, 1 pm. Committal Prayers and Interment will follow at the family plot of Rural Home Cemetery, Big Flats, NY.

Leo Coleman
Corning, NY
Leo John Coleman, 81 years, of 235 Pritchard Ave, died Wednesday, March 9, 2005 at his home.
He was born March 2, 1924 in Rathbone, NY, the son of the late John and Margaret Frawley Coleman, and was a graduate of Addison Central School.
Leo was a World War II veteran, serving with the United States Army in the Normandy Campaign.
Leo and Julia McCarthy were married May 2, 1953 at St. Vincent de Paul Church in Corning, NY. She predeceased him April 30, 2003.
He had worked as a milkman with A.E. Scudder and Son Dairy for 20 years, then as a brakeman conductor with the New York Central (Conrail) Railroad.
Leo was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Campbell, NY, a lifetime member of the Local 524 VFW, and enjoyed meeting every month with other retirees from the railroad for breakfast at the Central Restaurant.
He is survived by his daughter; Julie Coleman , and son and daughter-in-law; Tim and Judy Coleman all of Corning, NY. Also several nieces, nephews and a cousin. He was also predeceased by his son; little Leo, and brother; Joseph Coleman.

William A. "Bill" Miller
Big Flats, NY
William A. Miller, 99 years, of Maple Street Big Flats, died Wednesday, March 9, 2005 at Ira Davenport Hospital.
He was born October 5, 1905 in Corning, NY the son of the late John and Alice (Rowe) Miller. Bill and Isabel C. Heverly were married September 2, 1926 in Corning.
He retired from Prudential Insurance Company, Overheiser Grocery Store and as manager of several service stations. He was a member of St. Thomas Episcopal Church, Bath and a past member of BPOE 1071.
Bill is survived by his wife of 78 years, Isabel, a daughter and son-in-law Barbara and George Haar of Corning, a son-in-law, Joseph Amoroso of Honeoye Falls (predeceased daughter, Shirley A. Amoroso), a niece Joyce Crants Killigrew, 6 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren, 3 great, great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
There will be no calling hours. A Memorial Service will be held at the convenience of the family. Arrangements are with the Haughey Funeral Home, 216 E. First St, Corning, NY.

Evelyn Eames

Evelyn M. Eames, 78 years of 50 Olcott Rd. South, died Sunday, March 6, 2005 at her home.
She was born in Corning, NY, August 9, 1926, the daughter of the late Burt and Lena Simpson. She was a lifetime resident of the Corning/Big Flats area and had attended the Corning School System.
Evelyn and Edwin W. Eames Jr. were married August 1943 in the Presbyterian Manse in Big Flats, NY. Edwin predeceased her January 11, 2003.
She was employed with the A&P Plant and retired April of 1993 in the Food Service Department at Elcor Health Services, Horseheads, NY.
Evelyn was a member of the Central Baptist Church of Corning, NY. She was a loving mother and grandmother, truly dedicated to her family. She also was an avid reader.
Surviving, her son; Gerald (Denise) Eames of Salem, OR. Daughters; Linda (Richard) Anderson of Cameron, MT, Nancy (Gary) Horton of Manns Harbor, NC, Cynthia (Guy) Jividen of Big Flats, NY and Susan (David) Golden of Monterey, NY. 13 Grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren. Brother; Clayton Simpson of Corning, NY. Also several nieces and nephews.

Perry Oakden

Perry F. Oakden, 55 years of 130 West 5th Street, Corning, NY, died March 1, 2005 at his home.
He was born December 26, 1949 in Ilion, NY the son of Wilson and Irene F. Miller Oakden. He came to the Corning area as a child, graduating from Corning/Painted Post East High school (Class of 1968), Corning Community College and Elmira College.
Perry and Lynda Keegan Fawcett were married October 14, 1978 in the First Presbyterian Church in Corning
He was employed as a Contract Administrator with Dresser Rand, Painted Post, NY, from 1975 until his death.
Perry played a variety of high school sports, college basketball, countless games of softball and enjoyed fishing once.He was an avid sports and music enthusiast as well as a coach and mentor to many,a constant competitor and took pride in all he did.
He is survived by his wife Lynda Oakden, daughters; Mary Francine Oakden & Financee Chris Rother of Lake Placid, NY, Elizabeth Anne Oakden of Lake Tahoe, NV, Kendra Leigh Oakden at home and son; Garrett Michael Oakden of Corning, NY. mother; Irene Oakden of Lindley, NY, sister; Jane (Dick) Dembey of Dixon, MO and brother; Loren (Connie)Oakden of Corning, NY. Nephews; Terry Oakden, Matthew, Nicholas & Eric Fawcett, Aaron Stilts. Nieces; Teresa Dembey, Kelly Gilbert, Tracy Oakden, Stephanie Gates and Amy & Carrie Mosher.
His father, Wilson Oakden predeceased him.
