Jean H. Houston
Jean H. Houston, 97, formerly of Corning, died October 3, 2005 in Mitchellville, Maryland where she had resided since 1987.
Mrs. Houston was born in New Brighton, Pennsylvania. She attended schools there and in Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania. She was employed as a telephone operator in the Beaver Falls office of the Bell Telephone Company for ten years before her marriage to Charles W. Houston in 1936. The Houstons lived in Gadsen, Alabama and Warren, Ohio before moving to Corning in 1950.
Mrs. Houston worked for many years at Lando's Grocery in Corning. She was an active member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, the St. Vincent Catholic Action Society, the Corning Lioness Club, and the St. Vincent Senior Citizens Club. She loved to travel and spend much time visiting the Caribbean, South America, Europe, and the Mideast. She was a loving and dedicated mother, grandmother, and great grandmother who will be greatly missed by her family.
Mrs. Houston was predeceased by her husband, Charles in 1988 and her daughter, Mary Cooney in 1995.
Survivors include: a daughter, Louise Paul of Cheverly, Maryland, five grandchildren, Kathleen Cooney of Emerald Hills, California, Matthew Cooney, of Miami, Florida, Peter Paul (Barbara) of Grasonville, Maryland, Stephen Paul (Carol) of Bowie, Maryland and Patrick Paul (Cristina) of Deale, Maryland, and seven great-grandchildren: Stephen Paul of Nordholz, Germany, Brendan, Kiersten, and Charles Paul of Bowie, Maryland and Lauren, Peter and Sarah Paul of Grasonville, Maryland.
Friends may call at the Haughey Funeral Home 216 East First St., Corning, NY, Thursday, October 6, 2005 from 7-9pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered Friday, October 7, 2005 at St. Vincent de Paul Church, Corning, NY. Committal Prayers and Interment will be at the family plot in St. Mary's Cemetery, Corning, NY.

Dorothy Jane Viselli
Dorothy Jane Viselli, 90, of Campbell, NY, died unexpectedly at her home October 3, 2005.
Dorothy was born September 11, 1915 the daughter of the late William and Bessie Bond Smith.
A lifetime resident of the Corning area, Dorothy attended Grade School in Big Flats, NY and graduated from Corning Free Academy, Class of 1935.
Dorothy Jane Smith and John J. Viselli were married September 12, 1940 at St. Mary’s Church in Corning, NY.
Dorothy is survived by daughters Marie ( August ) Titi of Corning, NY and Marilyn ( Joseph ) Pierson of Painted Post, NY, granddaughter Michelle (William) Stull of Painted Post, NY, sister-in-law Mary Woeppel and brother-in-law Joseph Boucher both of Corning, NY., also several nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.
She was recently predeceased by husband John J. Viselli on September 28, 2005. Also predeceasing her were; brothers and sisters-in-law; Harry and Mary Smith and Rufus and Madeline Smith, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law Frank and Elizabeth Allison, Nicholas and Antoinette Varalli, Anthony and Lucille Galle., sister-in-law Philomena Boucher and brother-in-law Bernard Woeppel.
Dorothy was employed with Corning Glass Works and later worked many years as a cafeteria and school ground assistant, retiring from the Campbell School District.
Dorothy was an active member of St. Joseph’s Church in Campbell, an Election Inspector for the Town of Campbell and a member of the Campbell Senior Citizens Group, serving as the activity and trip coordinator. She also served for 10 years as a Brownie and Girl Scout Leader.
Dorothy enjoyed life, and time spent with family, friends, and neighbors. She was an avid baseball fan and also enjoyed cooking, gardening, and traveling.
Dorothy was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend. She will be missed by family and friends.

John Joseph Viselli
Corning, N.Y.
John Joseph Viselli, 95, of Campbell, NY, died Wednesday, September 28, 2005 at Corning Hospital.
John was born April 17, 1910 in Corning, NY, the son of the late Antonio Viselli and Columbia Carapella Viselli.
A lifetime resident of the Corning area, John was a graduate of St. Mary’s Catholic School.
John is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Dorothy Jane Smith Viselli, daughters Marie (August) Titi of Corning, NY, Marilyn (Joseph) Pierson of Painted Post, NY, granddaughter Michelle (William) Stull of Painted Post, NY, sister Mary Woeppel and brother-in-law, Joseph Boucher of Corning, NY. Also, several nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. He was predeceased by sister and brother-in-law Elizabeth and Frank Allison, Antoinette and Nicholas Varalli, brother and sister-in-law Anthony and Lucille Galle, sister, Philomena Boucher and brother-in-law Bernard Woeppel.
Joining Corning Glass Works on May 1, 1928. John completed 44 years active service with Corning retiring May 1, 1972. John was employed as a glass finisher at the Steuben Glass Factory. In June 2003, John had the distinct honor to receive a 75 year service pin from then Corning Incorporated Chairman, Jamie Houghton.
John was an active member of St. Joseph’s Church, Campbell, NY, and served as an usher for many years. He was a member of the American Flint Glass Worker’s Union Local 1000 and a long time past member of the Corning Rod and Gun Club. John was an avid hunter and enjoyed his bird dogs. He also trained bird dogs and competed at many field trials throughout the area. John also enjoyed gardening, baseball and traveling.
John was a loving, caring and gentle family man and a faithful servant of the Lord. He will be missed by family and friends.

Anna Nancy Rarrick

Anna Nancy Rarrick, 85 years, of 2047 Bailey Creek Rd., died Sunday September 25, 2005 at the Corning Hospital.
She was born September 26, 1919 in Big Flats, N.Y., the daughter of the late John and Helen Nancy Coleson.
A lifetime resident of Corning, she attended St. Mary’s Catholic School.
Anna and Richard Francis Rarrick Sr. were married January 1945 St. Mary’s Orthodox Church, Corning, N.Y. He predeceased her March 26, 1993.
She was employed with Corning Inc. and later at the Corning Hospital in the Snack Bar Area.
Anna was a member of St. Mary’s Orthodox Church and past president of the Women’s Auxillary of the Corning VFW.
Surviving her daughters; Georgianna Williams of Corning, N.Y., Jeanette (David) Goebel of Webster, N.Y., Mary Colburn of Corning, N.Y., and Margaret (Edward) Allen of Corning, N.Y. Son, Richard Francis Rarrick Jr. of Corning, N.Y. Numerous Grandchildren, Great Grandchildren, and Great Great Grandchildren. Several Nieces and Nephews.
She was predeceased by her daughter, Rose Atkinson. Son, Michael Rarrick. Granddaughter, Renee Billington. Sister, Mary Murphy and Brother, Michael Coleson.
How do you say goodbye to your Mother, Grandmother and Great Grandmother? She meant so much to each of us. Always there through good times and bad. In her joys and hardships she always stood strong. Goodbye is always hard, especially when it’s your Mom. Even though our sorrow is great, a new journey has begun with Him, who has called you home. Take our Love with you to those you now join. Thomas Joseph McClure, 68 years of 258 Bridge Street, died Friday September 23, 2005 at Founders Pavilion.
He was born April 20, 1937 in Corning, NY, the son of the late Joseph H. and Estella Crane McClure. A lifetime resident of Corning, graduating from St. Vincent de Paul Catholic School and Northside High School, class of 1956.
Tom and Patricia Schneckenberger were married June 28, 1958 in St. Vincent de Paul Church, Corning, NY.
He was a retired employee of the Corning Painted School District, working as the sole custodian at Frank Pierce School and later at Severn School.
He was a member of All Saints Parish, Corning Eagles Club, Corning VFW and the Corning Beagle Club. In past years he enjoyed hunting, fishing, NASCAR racing and winters in Port Orange, FL.
Surviving his wife of 47 years, Patricia. Daughter; Dawn Humphrey of Corning, N.Y. Sons; Joseph (Brenda) McClure of Painted Post, N.Y., Thomas Jeffrey McClure and Christopher (Andrea) McClure all of Corning, N.Y. Six Grandchildren; Michael Humphrey, Patti Humphrey, Amanda McClure, Bryan McClure, Jordan McClure and Aidan McClure. Claire Morgan Murray, 13 years, died Tuesday September 13, 2005 at her home at 2961 Hickock Road.
She was born October 30, 1991 in Elmira, N.Y. the daughter of Richard Thomas and Melissa Ellen White Murray. Claire was a life long resident of the area and a 8th grade student of Corning Free Academy.
She was an active member of Christ Episcopal Church, involved with the Choir and Christian Pageant. Member of Stage Kids of Corning, YMCA., Town of Corning Lacrosse League. She loved Cooking, Knitting, Art, Listening to Music, and adored her pets.
Claire was a special girl who touched the lives of many people. Her parents would like to thank all those who enriched her life.
Surviving are her parents, Richard and Melissa Murray and her sister Hannah Murray. Maternal Grandparents; Donald and Mary Foster White of Troy PA. Paternal Grandparents; Martin and Helen Murray of New City, N.Y. Also Several Aunts, Uncles and Cousins. A Memorial Service will be held at Christ Episcopal Church, 39 E. First St. Corning, N.Y. Monday September 19, 2005 at 11am with Reverend Salvatore Mistretta Celebrant. The family will received friends at the Church Monday from 10-11a.m.

Penelope "Penny" Bacalles
Corning, N.Y.
Penelope (Penny) Bacalles 88 years died Saturday September 10, 2005 at her home at 49 Pershing Street.
She was born December 30, 1916 in Easton, PA. The daughter of the late Peter and Georgia Panigious Lambos. She attended the Pennsylvania School System, relocated from Erie, PA to Corning, N.Y., following her marriage to George James Bacalles on October 5, 1947. He predeceased her on July 21, 1988.
Penelope was the owner of Bacalles Glass Shop on Market Street in Corning and retired in 2002.
Surviving her daughter, Zaharo Emerson and Sons, James G. (Mary) Bacalles and Pater G. (Debbie) Bacalles all of Corning, N.Y. Grandchildren, Jason (Kara) Emerson, Gregory (Lisa) Emerson, George J. Bacalles and Joseph J. Bacalles. Great Grandchildren, Abigal and Hannah Emerson. Sisters in law, Sotera ( Tillie) Bacalles and Katherine Bacalles both of Corning, N.Y. Also several nieces and nephews.
A service of Thanksgiving will be held Friday September 16, 2005 at 1p.m.. at Christ Episcopal Church 39 East First St., Corning, N.Y. Rev. Salvatore Mistretta celebrating. Prayers and Interment will be at the family plot in Hope Cemetery, Corning, N.Y.

Earl F. Franchi
Horseheads, N.Y.
Earl F. Franchi 77 years of 3814 State Rt. 414, Corning, N.Y. died Sunday September 4, 2005 at Elcor Health Services.
He was born in Charleroi, PA. December 19, 1927 the son of the late Ralph A. and Josephine N. Cardinale Franchi. He relocated from Charleroi to Corning, N.Y. in 1936 and graduated with the Class of 1945 from Northside High School.
He served with the United States Merchant Marines and later with the United States Army during the Korean Conflict (1951-52). Earl and Louise German were married March 11, 1962 at the First Baptist Church in Painted Post, N.Y. She predeceased him September 25, 2002.
He was owner of FRENICK’S in Corning and also owned the Studebaker Franchise in the 60's, located in Riverside. Earl was employed as an Insurance Agent for Metropolitan Life Insurance Company. At the time of his retirement he was owner/manager of Club 414 in Corning.
He was a member of the Corning VFW #524, the American Legion, John P. Eaton Post #746. He enjoyed golfing, boating and was a past member of the Corning Country Club, Willow Creek Golf Club and the Watkins Glen Yacht Club.
Earl was remembered as an honest, joyful, quick witted man and respected others. He was a loving and caring father and brother. His efforts of guiding his family was through good examples, trustworthiness and much hard work.
Surviving his son; Ralph A. Franchi of Imperial Beach, CA. Grandsons; Joseph Franchi and Daniel Franchi. Brother and Sister in law; Ralph D. and Jeannette Franchi of Big Flats, N.Y. Also several nieces and nephews.

Joseph M. Turchick

Joseph M. Turchick 80 years formerly of 2334 Foster Rd., Corning, N.Y. died Tuesday August 16, 2005 at Elcor Health Services.
He was born April 21, 1925 in Coalport, PA. the son of the late Andrew and Anna Puskar Turchick. He was a graduate of Beccaria Township School System, attended Gannon College, Eria, PA. And received his BSME from Penn State class of 1950.
He was a Veteran of the U.S. Army during World War II (1943-1945) serving in the European Theater Operations.
Joe and Alice Winifred Thomas were married December 29, 1947 in Coalport, PA.
He relocated from Wellsboro, PA. in 1956 to the Corning area and was employed with Corning Inc. and retired (9/1/1987) as Plant Manager of Main Plant.
He was a member of All Saints Parish attending St. Patricks Church, Member of the Corning Hospital Board (1974-1982), American Society of Mechanical Engineers. Following the devastation of the 1972 Flood, he was a Member of the New York State Flood Control Committee and received recognition from the Governor of New York State for his diligent efforts in solving the flood problems. He was a member of the American Legion John P. Eaton Post, the Corning VFW and the Indian Hills Golf Club.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Alice (Freddie)., Daughters and Sons in law; Ann Marie and Joel Holden of Dataw Island, S.C. and Patricia Louise and David Engelhardt of Farmington, Conn. Son; Joseph Michael Turchick Jr. of Bellefonte, PA. and Son and Daughter in law David and Nancy Turchick of Raleigh, N.C. Grandchildren; Ryan Spencer Turchick, Daniel Thomas Turchick and Emily Ann Engelhardt. Brothers; John Turchick of Tuson, AZ. Edward (Agnes) Turchick of Coalport, PA. Albert (Jean) Turchick of Midland Park, NJ., Francis (Marilyn) Turchick of Pittsburg, PA. Sister; Helen Barbieri of N.Y.C Also several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by Brothers, Andrew and Paul Turchick and Sister, Anna Turchick.

Charles Robert Landis
Elmira, N.Y.
Charles Robert Landis 79 years of Corning, N.Y. died Tuesday, August 16, 2005 at the Arnot Ogden Medical Center.
He was born April 2, 1926 in Lindley the son of the late George and Ruth Carey Landis, a lifetime resident of the area and graduate of Lindley School and Coring Northside Class of 1944. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy Seabees during World War II and the Korean Conflict.
Charles and Margaret Alice McCarthy were married June 14, 1947, St. Vincent de Paul Church. She predeceased him May 4, 2002. He was employed as an installer/repairman for the New York Telephone Company. He was a member of the All Saints Parish, attending St. Vincent de Paul, member of the Corning VFW and the American Legion John P. Eaton Post.
Charles enjoyed golfing and bowling in past years. Charles had an incredible outlook on life and had great courage throughout his lifetime. He had a close network of friends ("family") at the Central Restaurant, which was appreciated by everyone. He was truly a wonderful and loving father.

Sylvia M. Pierri 84 years, formerly of 4 Fenderson St., Painted Post, NY, died Sunday August 14, 2005 at Seneca View.
She was born May 22, 1921 in Galeton, PA, the daughter of the late Louis and Nicoletta Cafarelli Piaquadio. She attended the Galeton School System. Sylvia and Raymond J. Pierri were married June 30, 1962 in St. Bibiana’s Church, Galeton, PA. At that time she relocated to Corning, NY. She was a member of All Saints Parish, attending Immaculate Heart of Mary Church.
Surviving her beloved husband of 43 years, Raymond. Daughter, Lisa (Michael) Fish of Corning, NY. Son, Guy Pierri of Corning, NY. Step son, Raymond S. (Laurie) Pierri of Horseheads, NY. Grandchildren; Michael, Hailey, and Lettie Fish and Joseph, Dominic and Benjamin Pierri. Sister, Grace Lappa of Galeton, PA. Also several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her daughter, Karen Finucane.
There will be no calling hours. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Mary’s Church, Corning, NY Thursday August 18, 2005 at 9:30am. Committal Prayers and Interment will be held at a later date at the family plot in St. Mary’s Cemetery.

Lucy Schimizzi

Lucy M. Schimizzi 80 years of 351 West Third Street died Friday August 12,2005 at the Corning Hospital.
She was born December 12,1924 in Corning, N.Y. the daughter of the late Constantino and Philomenia Farrado Costello. A lifetime resident of Corning and a graduate of St. Mary’s Catholic School and Corning Free Academy.
Lucy and Joseph G. Schimizzi were married April 14,1951 in Corning. Joseph predeceased her June 3,1995.
She was a secretary of Corning Inc. retiring in 1987 with 37 years active service. Lucy had just received her 55 year service pin from the company. She was also employed for Congressman Amory Houghton from 1988-2001.
She was a member of All Saints Parish, attending St. Mary’s Church.
Surviving her son and daughter in law; Joseph M. and Lisa Schimizzi of Corning, N.Y.
Daughter and son in law; Lisa and Patrick O’Dea of Albany, N.Y. Grandchildren Theresa, Maureen and Maria Schimizzi and Joe and Liam O’Dea. Allen Goodman
Allen Goodman, 50 years of 41 Clark Street, Painted Post, NY died Wednesday, July 13, 2005 at the Corning Hospital.
He was born July 16, 1954 in Long Island, son of the late Mr. & Mrs. Julius Goodman. He had received his education in the New York City School System.
While in New York City, he had been employed as a stagehand and makeup artist in the theater.
He is survived by his son; Gary Goodman of Painted Post, NY, Special friends; Gary & Lynn Ferron of Bath, NY, Jill Marshall of Bath, NY, Linda Barnard of Corning, NY and Karen Button of Florida.
Funeral Service will be held at the Haughey Funeral Home, 216 E. First St, Corning, NY, Thursday, July 14, 2005 at 2:00pm, Chaplin Kit Tobin of Corning Hospital officiating. Committal Prayers and Interment will follow at Coopers Plains Cemetery, Painted Post, NY.
The family would appreciate Memorial Donations be given in Allen’s name to: American Diabetes Foundation Juvenile Division, 1660 Duke St, Alexandria, VA 22314.
