EPSTEIN Herbert Age 85 of Curren Dr., Elmira, NY died on Friday, August 8, 2003, from a series of illnesses. Herb's life was devoted to close relationships with his family, friends and other individuals whom he helped to deal with the emotional vagaries of life. His business, Keeffe and Baker Insurance Agency, which he acquired during the 1950's, was merged into the Perry and Carroll Agency in 1993, when Herb retired. At one time, Herb was part-owner of a Barbados Insurance Company, wherein his friend George Hamid used Herb's insurance expertise to help George's and other circuses cope with a 1980's insurance crisis. Before the insurance business, he worked in radio advertising in the south, at Corning Glass, and in the store fixture business. After retirement, Herb assisted his cousins, Nate and Richard Holtzman, at Spiegel's in Elmira. During his lifelong residency in Elmira, Herb was president of Congregation B'Nai Israel and active in education and civil rights. His greatest love other than people (and maybe dogs) was Princeton University, where he graduated in 1940 with a degree in Psychology. In fact, his friends from Princeton called him "Hyp" because he had learned the practice of hypnosis, an art he occasionally employed in his counseling people in need. In addition to serving as president of the Local Princeton Alumni Association, Hyp served as treasurer for the Class of 1940 as well as editing the class' 40th year reunion book. While Herb's principal avocation was relationships with individuals, another of his passions was the time spent with friends and family at his cottage on Keuka Lake.
