HORNELL - Ruth L. Freeland, 80, of 7555 Airport Road, died unexpectedly at her home Thursday (Aug. 21, 2003).
PEGGY ANN LAYTON
WARD - Peggy Ann Layton passed away on Friday (Aug. 22, 2003).
At her request, there will be no prior visitation and the service will be at the convenience of the family.
HAROLD J. "PETE" COOPER JR.
AVOCA - Harold J. "Pete" Cooper, Jr., 78, of 4605 County Route 105, passed away Friday (Aug. 22, 2003) at the Arnot-Ogden Medical Center in Elmira.
Born in Avoca on Oct. 28, 1924, he was a son of the late Harold J. and Gladys Bates Cooper.
He attended Avoca School prior to being employed on the Olmstead Hill Farms with his father and brothers for more than 20 years.
Pete was employed by the Town of Avoca Highway Department for 20 years, before his retirement.
Since his retirement he enjoyed Sunday morning coffee at his home with his brothers and nephew. Pete also enjoyed doing woodworking projects for his family.
His family includes his wife of 57 years, Norma Mattoon Cooper; his daughters, Candace (Sandy) Hosier of Hammondsport and Jeanne (Robert) Fisher of Ashburn, Va.; his brothers, Bud (Dorothy) Cooper of Bath, Bob (Mary) Cooper, Dick (Marilyn) Cooper and Donny (Molly) Cooper, all of Avoca; his sisters, Betty "Tootie" (Bob) Fisher of Conesus, Bernie (Jim) Worden of Prattsburgh, Sally Hughes of Bath, Judy (Jerry) Zeh of Cohocton and Linda (Jeff) Gardener of Avoca; his brothers-in-law, Harold (Phyllis) Mattoon of Avoca, Don Mattoon of Florida, Gerald (Rosemary) Mattoon and Erwin Mattoon, both of Medina, and Larry (Janice) Mattoon of Florida; his aunt, Bernice Osborne of Atlanta, Ga.; also his many nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, Pete was predeceased by his sisters, Mary Lou Robords and Midge Rector.
Calling hours are from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Monday at the Avoca Funeral Home (formerly Bond-Davis & Bishop Funeral Home), 22 N. Main St., Avoca. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Wallace Methodist Church with the Rev. Melanie Beardslee officiating. Committal services and interment will follow at Vale of Rest Cemetery, Avoca.
In lieu of flowers, those wishing may contribute in Pete's memory to either the Wallace Methodist Church or to Corning Dialysis Unit, 8 W. Pulteney St., Corning, NY 14830.
The family would like to thank the staff, nurses and doctors at the Arnot-Ogden Medical Center and the Corning Dialysis Unit for nearly 11 years of care.
LUCILLE M. LaMONTE
DANSVILLE - Lucille M. LaMonte, 65, of Elizabeth Street passed away unexpectedly Friday morning (Aug. 22, 2003) at Rochester General Hospital.
She was born in Dansville on Jan. 23, 1938, a daughter of the late Gordon L. and Catherine A. Wallace LaMonte.
Lucille was formerly employed at Instructor Publications as an Editorial Secretary. She was a lifetime social member of the West Sparta Volunteer Fire Dept. and a former member of the Women of the Moose #607 of Dansville.
She is survived by her son, Thomas LaMonte of West Sparta; a daughter, Mary Price of Dansville; three sisters, Sandy (Walter) Gilman and Sharon (Charles) Cobb Jr., both of West Sparta and Joyce LaMonte of Jamestown; several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
A memorial service and reception will be held Saturday, Aug. 30, from 2-4 p.m. at the West Sparta Fire Hall.

WINIFRED M. JOHNSON
BROOKSVILLE, Fla. - Winifred M. Johnson, 88, of Brooksville, Fla., died Wednesday (Aug. 20, 2003) at Hospice Care Center in Brooksville, Fla.
Born in Chasm Falls, she came moved to Brooksville, Fla., 22 years ago from Sarasota, Fla. She was a teacher, a member of Delta Kappa Gamma of New York and of the Protestant faith.
Survivors include two daughters, Penny Barnes of St. Paul, Minn., and Faith Schaff-Brehm of Norfolk, Va.; a sister, Phyllis Hatch of Sarasota, Fla.; and three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Arrangements are by the Merritt Funeral Home Brooksville Chapel, Florida.

RICHMOND, Va. - John S. Berry, 72, passed away Friday (Aug. 22, 2003).
JUDY A. RINALDO
PRATTSBURGH - Judy A. Rinaldo, 58, of 9685 Lynn Rd., passed away Saturday evening (Aug. 23, 2003) at the Arnot-Ogden Medical Center in Elmira, after a long illness.
Born in Seattle, Wash., on May 29, 1945, she was a daughter of Joseph Peterson, who survives; and Gladys Morrill Peterson, who predeceased her. On July 6, 1963, she was married in Staten Island to George Rinaldo Jr., who predeceased her.
A former resident of Staten Island, where she attended school, Judy had resided in Prattsburgh for the past 10 years.
She was a homemaker and a loving and devoted daughter, mother, grandmother and sister. Judy enjoyed doing crafts, crocheting, and spending time with her grandchildren.
Besides her father, Joseph Peterson of Corning, her family includes her seven daughters, Judiann (Gustavo) Paz of Staten Island, Neida (Juan) Vasquez of the Bronx, Joann Rinaldo of Bath, Joyce (Edward) Carvalho of Staten Island, Esther Rinaldo, Jennifer DuBois and Diana Rinaldo, all of Prattsburgh; her 12 grandchildren; her four sisters, Joyce (Edward) Nygren of St. Petersburgh, Fla.; Marie (Mike) McFarland and Marlene Green, all of Avoca; and Lisa Peterson of Corning; her five brothers, Roger (Virginia) Peterson of Hudson, Fla., Peter Spak of Avoca, James (Ann) Peterson of Pittsburgh, Pa., Brian (Angela) Peterson of Charlotte, N.C., and Ray Peterson of Corning; her aunt, Janet Brown of St. Petersburgh, Fla.; her uncle, Thomas Peterson of Toms River, N.J.; also her many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Besides her mother and husband, Judy was predeceased by her brother, Joseph Peterson.

COREEN L. MILLIS
GENEVA - Coreen L. Millis, 72, of 18117 Doral Dr., Ft. Myers, Fla., formerly of Geneva and Auburn, died Friday (Aug. 22, 2003) at Hospice House, Ft. Myers, Fla.
Coreen was born in Hornell, the daughter of the late Jack and Asastasia (Haddock) Mahoney. She was predeceased by her husband of 42 years, Richard, in 1996.
She spent the last 27 years of her life in sobriety, with the help of her friends and family and Alcoholics Anonymous.
She was employed as a counselor at Taylor Brown Hospital and C.H.A.D. of Auburn, retiring in 1996. During this time she was NYFAC counselor of the year in 1993, and selected citizen of the year in 1996 by the Citizen newspaper in Auburn. She also was involved in the Girl Scouts of America.
She is survived by her son, Gregory (Tracy) Millis of Ft. Myers, Fla.; her daughter, Rebecca Field of Olean; one sister, Betty (John) O'Donnell; two brothers, Richard (Dottie) Mahoney of Toledo, Ohio, and Francis (Noreen) Mahoney of Hornell; three grandsons, Jason Millis of Ft. Myers, Fla., Damion Millis of Oswego and Marcus Field of Olean; two great-granddaughters, Brittany Millis of Ft. Myers, Fla., and Kaitlin Field of Olean; several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her brother, Jack (Aileen) Mahoney of Hornell.
Friends may call at the DeVaney-Bennett Funeral Home, 181 N. Main St., Geneva, Wednesday (Aug. 27) from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. on Thursday (Aug. 28) in the funeral home. Ruth Page Pastoral Assistant for the Roman Catholic Community of Geneva, will officiate. Burial will be in Sandhill Cemetery.

ROBERT ROLAND "SHINNY" SHINEBARGER
LAKEVILLE/NAPLES, Fla. - Robert Roland "Shinny" Shinebarger, 81, died Sunday (Aug. 24, 2003) at Noyes Memorial Hospital in Dansville. Bob, formerly of Hornell, had been residing with his son and daughter-in-law, Steve and Shirley, in Naples, Fla., and Conesus Lake.
ISABELLE M. DIBBLE
CANISTEO - Isabelle M. Dibble, 83, of 1 Russell St., entered into rest shortly after arrival at St. James Mercy Hospital in Hornell on Tuesday (Aug. 26, 2003).
She was born June 6, 1920, in Hartsville, a daughter of Frank and Delighta King Keough. She was married June 21, 1938, in Canisteo, to Stanley Eugene Dibble, who died in 1981. She was also predeceased by two sons, Darwin James Dibble in 1948, and Robert Eugene Dibble in 2003.
She had lived in the Hartsville and Canisteo area all of her life, where she had been a homemaker. She was the greatest grandmother anyone could ever want. Her family always came first and she always made sure that they had life's needs.
Her family includes two sons, Nelson (Sharon) Dibble of Hornell and Ronald (Yvonne) Dibble of Canisteo; three daughters, Connie (David) Carl, Jan (Gene) Davis, Shirley (Edward) Abbott, all of Hornell; her sister, Louise (Carlton) Howard of Canisteo; her brother, Oliver (Goldie) Keough of Horseheads; 19 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, four step-grandchildren, one step-great-grandchild; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
The family will receive friends from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Thursday at the H.P. Smith & Son, Inc. Funeral Home, 29 East Main St., Canisteo, where a funeral service will be held Friday at 2 p.m., with the Rev. Tony Ross, Pastor of the Adrian Freewill Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Hartsville Center Cemetery, Hartsville.
