A Mass of Christian Burial for Julia J. Skrzypczyk of West Seneca will be offered at 11 a.m. today in St. John Vianney Catholic Church, 2950 Southwestern Blvd., Orchard Park.
Prayers will be said at 10:15 in Buszka Funeral Home, 2005 Clinton St. Interment will be in St. Matthews Cemetery, West Seneca.
Mrs. Skrzypczyk died Sunday (Feb. 27, 2000) in Mercy Hospital after a brief illness. She was 84.
Born Julia Marcinkiewicz in Buffalo, she was a graduate of East High School.
Mrs. Skrzypczyk and her late husband, Ladislaus, operated Skrip's Delicatessen on Union Road in Gardenville during the 1950s and 1960s. The Gardenville Post Office substation was run out of the delicatessen at that time, and Mrs. Skrzypczyk also served as the substation postmaster during those years. Her husband died in 1992.
She was a cashier at the Canisius College Bookstore from the early 1970s until her retirement at age 80 in 1995.
Mrs. Skrzypczyk also served as personal secretary to her late brother, the Rev. Monsignor Eugene V. Marcinkiewicz. He was the former chaplain at Attica State Correctional Facility and pastor emeritus at Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church, Medina. He died in 1999.
Mrs. Skrzypczyk was a member of various church and civic organizations, including the Polish Arts Club, the Canisius College Scholarship Association, the Polish Women's Alliance, Sodality of St. John Vianney, the Mothers Club of Canisius High School and the West Seneca and Gardenville Businessmen's Association.
Survivors include two sons, Eugene of Plymouth, Mass., and Gerald of Orchard Park, and three grandchildren.
SMITH - Odell Tucker 3/2/00
Services for Odell Tucker Smith, 74, a homemaker and active church worker, will be held at noon Friday in St. John Baptist Church, 184 Goodell St. Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery, West Seneca.
Mrs. Smith, who was born in Mobile, Ala., died Sunday (Feb. 27, 2000) in her Buffalo home after a long illness.
She came to Buffalo 50 years ago.
Mrs. Smith joined St. John Baptist in 1962 and was a member of the church's Sunflower Club.
Her husband, Hazel Smith, died in 1982.
Survivors include a sister, Bessie Barksdale of Buffalo; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
TRETTER - Christopher C. 3/2/00
YOUNGSTOWN - Christopher C. Tretter, 39, who had worked for Modern Services, Lewiston, for the past 15 years, died Wednesday (March 1, 2000) in Mount St. Mary's Hospital, Lewiston, after a brief illness.
Born in Niagara Falls, he also had lived in Lewiston and Youngstown.
A graduate of Lewiston-Porter High School, he had been a truck driver for Modern Services.
Survivors include his parents, Paul M. and Margaret Tretter, both of Lewiston; three sisters, Marietta Leatherman of Langsburg, Mich., and Margaret Tretter and Katie Pagano, both of Lewiston; and three brothers, P. Brian of Lewiston, Ted J. of Northport, Ala., and Mark J. of Sanborn.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 4671 Townline Road, Ransomville. Burial will be in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Lewiston.
WADELL - Stanley 3/2/00
LEWISTON - Stanley Wadell, former vice president of engineering at PCB Piezotronics in Depew, died Feb. 24, 2000, in Mount St. Mary's Hospital. He was 83.
Wadell was born in Janesville, Wis., and married the former Isabelle Skinner in 1941.
He came to this area and worked for Bell Aircraft of Buffalo in the 1950s and 1960s. He was an engineer in its Servo Instrument Division and was involved with the precision accelerometer and gyros for missile guidance applications.
In the early 1970s he joined PCB Piezotronics, where he was vice president of special projects engineering involved with Navy shipboard monitoring.
In addition to his wife, Wadell is survived by a son, John of Buffalo.
Services were held in the Skinner Funeral Home, Cumberland, Wis. Burial was in Lakeside Cemetery, Cumberland.
WEIDENBACH - Monica M., English teacher 3/2/00
Monica M. Weidenbach, 48, an English teacher at West Seneca West Senior High School, died Monday (Feb. 28, 2000) in her Lake View home after a lengthy battle with breast cancer.
Born Monica Manion in Lockport, she was a graduate of Lockport High School and earned an undergraduate degree from Marymount College and a bachelor's degree from Niagara University. She earned her master's degree at the University at Buffalo.
Mrs. Weidenbach had been a teacher in West Seneca schools since 1973 and served on the West Seneca West High School faculty with her husband, Edward, who also is an English teacher.
The school's 1994 yearbook was dedicated to her because, as students wrote, "She was much more than a teacher - she was a friend (and) made English classes fun and exciting." Her students frequently named her as a Teacher of Excellence.
Her colleagues said she also provided inspiration with wit and charm, even when battling her illness.
An avid golfer, she and her husband were members of Brierwood Country Club and, more recently, Fox Valley Country Club.
In addition to her husband, survivors include two stepchildren, Emily and Justin; her mother, Frances of Lockport; and four brothers, Thomas Manion of Bethesda, Md., William Manion of Olney, Md., and John Manion and Michael Manion, both of Orlando, Fla.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. today in John J. Kaczor Funeral Home, 5453 Southwestern Blvd., Hamburg. Burial will be in Lakeside Memorial Cemetery, Town of Hamburg.
ALLEN - Dr. James E. dies at 71; pediatric surgeon, professor 10/25/00
Dr. James E. Allen, an attending surgeon at Children's Hospital for more than 30 years, died Monday (Oct. 23, 2000) in his home in East Aurora after a long illness.
Allen, 71, was born in Cleveland. He was a graduate of Ohio State University and a 1955 graduate of the Ohio State School of Medicine.
He served his surgical internship and residency at the University Hospital in Columbus, Ohio, and served in the Navy from 1956 to 1958. He completed his residency at University Hospital in 1963 and was certified by the American Board of General Surgery. In 1975 he was certified with special competence in pediatric surgery.
He was an attending surgeon at Children's Hospital from 1964 until his death. He also was an assistant professor of surgery at the University at Buffalo Medical School from 1984 to 1997 and continued as a professor emeritus.
He also consulted with pediatric surgery departments at Roswell Park Cancer Institute, Erie County Medical Center and Brooks Memorial and Mercy hospitals.
He served as interim surgeon in chief at Children's from 1991 to 1993 and as president of its medical/dental staff from 1992 to 1993.
He served as president of the Western New York Chapter of the American College of Surgeons, the state division of the American Cancer Society and the state Cancer Programs Association.
He also was a member of the American Pediatric Surgical Association, the American College of Surgeons, the American Academy of Pediatrics, the British Association of Pediatric Surgeons, the Zollinger Surgical Society, the Central Surgical Association, the American Trauma Society and the Pediatric Oncology Group.
He is survived by his wife, Raffeala J. Martino Allen; three sons, Douglas J. Pierce, Michael J. and Mark E.; and four daughters, Debra J. Murphy, Carolyn A. Strach, Tina McLine and Margaret J. Kleinmann; a sister, Dorothy Anne Harvey of California; and 11 grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday in St. Matthias Episcopal Church, 374 Main St., East Aurora.
ARCHIBALD - Lillian, teacher in Clarence 10/25/00
Lillian Archibald, an elementary school teacher in Clarence for almost 40 years, died Monday (Oct. 23, 2000) in Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospital. She was 82.
The former Lillian Heimann was a lifelong resident of Clarence. A 1937 graduate of Parker High School, she helped put herself through college by bringing produce from her family's farm to market and selling it. She received a bachelor's degree in elementary education from Fredonia State Teachers College in 1940 and a master's degree in 1961 from Buffalo State College.
Mrs. Archibald taught in every school in the Clarence school district during her teaching career.
Her fifth-grade classes were known for being interesting and challenging. Every year, the class would make maps of the United States and the world on the floor or blacktop of Sheridan Hill Elementary School. She also was credited with starting the fifth-grade speaking contests in the district.
Mrs. Archibald was a lifelong member of Zion Lutheran Church in Clarence Center. She was superintendent of the Sunday school program, as well as a teacher, for many years. She also was a member of the church council and pastor call committees.
Survivors include James F. Archibald, her husband of 54 years; a son, Robert; two daughters, Cynthia Smith of Las Vegas, Nev., and Sandra Lombardo of Williamsville; a sister, Augusta Morse of Tustin, Calif.; a brother, Daniel Heimann of Clarence; and five grandchildren.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. today in Shepard Bros. Funeral Home, 10690 Main St., Clarence. Interment will be in Clarence Centre Cemetery.
