June (nee Nice) Cavanagh Reichert, age 79, died Sunday, September 30, 2007, at the Schofield Residence in the Town of Tonawanda, after a brief illness. Born in Buffalo, she was the daughter of the late Henry and Mary (nee Carpenter) Nice. She was the wife of the late Charles W. Cavanagh, Jr., and the late Rev. James A. Reichert, who died in 2001, and sister of the late Hazel Williams, James Nice, Robert Nice and William Nice.
She is survived by her three children, Michael C. Cavanagh of Grand Island, Caren (Michael) Haug of the Town of Tonawanda, and Susan (John) Reich of Tonawanda; two brothers, Henry "Dick" Nice and Walter "Bud" Nice; two sisters, Beryl (Arthur) Klaffka and Marjorie (Russell) Hall; and 10 grandchildren, Michael (Ann Marie) Cavanagh, Brian (Laurie) Cavanagh, and Daniel Cavanagh, Tracey (Paul) Keleher, Michael Haug, Katelyn Haug, Bethany (Nicholas) Scibetta, Rachael Reich, Crystal Sinclair, and Sheri (David) Ashton. Also surving are a cousin, Ardath (Bill) Mages, six great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
Friends may call from 4-8 PM on Monday at the Hamp Funeral Home, Inc., Adam and Seymour Streets, Tonawanda, where funeral services will be held at 8 PM Monday. Friends invited. If desired, memorials to Schofield Residence, 3333 Elmwood Avenue, Kenmore, NY 14217, are preferred by the family.
David L. Dempsey
Korean War Veteran
David L. Dempsey, age 77, of Lockport, formerly of Clarence, died Saturday, September 29, 2007 at Northgate Health Care Facility, after a long illness. Born in 1930, he was the son of the late Harry and Mildred (nee Evans) Dempsey, and was a Navy Veteran of the Korean War. He was employed at Worthington Compressor in Buffalo for 35 years, before retiring.
He is survived by his wife, June (nee Phillips) Dempsey; three children, Deborah (Ronald) Widman of Macomb, Michigan, David (Lisa) Dempsey of Buford, Georgia, and Thomas (Joanne) Dempsey of Clarence Center, NY; a sister, Laura Dempsey of Kenmore; and a brother, Charles (Karen) Dempsey of San Diego, California. Also surviving are six grandchildren, Douglas, Kristen, Steven, Matthew, Timothy, and Tiffany, and many nieces and nephews.
There is no visitation. Friends are invited to attend a Memorial Service at 2 PM on Saturday, October 6, at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 4275 Harris Hill Road in Williamsville. Arrangments were entrusted to the care of the Hamp Funeral Home, Inc., Adam and Seymour Streets, Tonawanda.
Karen J. Wauriw
Karen (nee Bentley) Wauriw, age 65, of Tonawanda, died Sunday, September 30, 2007, in Pennsylvania, after a long illness. Born in Buffalo, she was the daughter of the late Lee and Rita (nee Lawler) Bentley and was employed at the New Era Hat Company, before becoming ill. She was the sister of the late David Bentley and Kathleen Munt.
She is survived by her husband, Andrew M. Wauriw; three children, Lisa (David) Hinckley of Edinboro, Pennsylvania, William Wauriw, and Dorothy (Timothy) Wilkins of Brant, New York; and a sister, Judith (Joseph) Barry of Tonawanda. Also surviving are six grandchildren, Adam, Aaron, Alex, Samantha, Kaylee, and Emma, and several nieces and nephews.
Friends may call from 2-4 and 6-8 PM on Wednesday at the Hamp Funeral Home, Inc., Adam and Seymour Streets in Tonawanda, where funeral services will be held at 8 PM Wednesday; the Rev. Msgr. James Connelly officiating. Friends invited.
Rita K. Penberthy
Member of Tonawanda Senior Citizens
Rita (nee Schleer) Penberthy, age 86, of Tonawanda, died Saturday, October 6, 2007 at The McAuley Residence, after a brief illness. Born in Buffalo, she was the daughter of the late John and Alice (nee O’Malley) Schleer and was a resident of Tonawanda for more than 60 years. Mrs. Penberthy was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Parish and the Tonawanda Senior Citizens, and had been employed at the Tonawanda News before retiring. She was the wife of the late Thomas D. Penberthy, who died December 4, 1994.
She is survived by her daughter, Kathleen (Donahue) Silvis of Naples, Florida; three sons, John (Diane) Penberthy of Tonawanda, Thomas D. Penberthy of Kenmore, and Daniel (Robin) Penberthy of East Amherst; six grandchildren, Holly (Neal), Karen (Keith), Tina (Paul), Bryan (Lynne), Nicholas, and Tyler; and 9 beloved great-grandchildren, Hunter, Josh, Jacob, Ethan, Matthew, Sean, Stuart, Andrew, and Katelyn. Also surviving are many nieces and nephews.
Friends may call from 2-4 and 6-8 PM on Thursday only at the Hamp Funeral Home, Inc., Adam and Seymour Streets, Tonawanda. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 AM Friday at St. Francis of Assisi Church on Broad Street in Tonawanda. Friends invited. Interment will be cared for privately at Mt. Olivet Cemetery. If desired, memorials to the St. Francis School Endowment Fund, 73 Adam Street, Tonawanda, NY 14150, are preferred by the family.
Adam D. Crissey
1998 Graduate of Tonawanda High School
Adam D. Crissey, age 27, of Tonawanda, died Sunday, October 7, 2007 at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, after a long illness. Born in Amherst, he was a lifelong resident of Tonawanda and was a 1998 graduate of Tonawanda High School. Adam was a manager at several local WendyÂ’s Restaurants until becoming too ill to work. He enjoyed music and all sports, and was an avid football fan and enjoyed following the college and professional teams.
He is survived by his mother, Joanne (nee Kelly) Crissey of Tonawanda; his father, Douglas (Karen) Crissey of Amherst; a brother, Mat Crissey of Tonawanda; his grandparents, Joan (Phil) Esposito of Tonawanda, James (Margaret) Kelly of Lewiston, and Eleanore (the late Foster) Crissey of Tonawanda; and several aunts and uncles, including a special aunt, Jill (Michael) McCormick of Fontana, California. Also surviving are many cousins and friends.
There is no visitation. A Memorial Service will be held at 12 Noon on Saturday, October 13, 2007 at Bethesda Full Gospel Tabernacle, Broad and Delaware Streets in Tonawanda; the Rev. Tony Renda officiating. Friends invited. If desired, memorials to Strong Memorial Hospital, Solid Organ Transplantation, 601 Elmwood Ave, Box 660, Rochester, NY 14642, are preferred by the family. Jerome Benjamin
Volunteer at VA Medical Center in Buffalo
Jerome Benjamin, age 87, of the Town of Tonawanda, formerly of Manhattan, died Sunday, October 7, 2007, at the VA Medical Center, after a brief illness. Born in Brooklyn, New York, he was the son of the late Louis and Mathilda (nee Pomerantz) Benjamin and had been a resident of Manhattan for the greater part of his life before moving to Pembroke Pines, Florida, after retiring. He was a Marine Corps Veteran of WWII, and had worked as a salesman for Corners Distributors in the Bronx, before retiring. Mr. Benjamin moved to the Town of Tonawanda about a year ago to live with his son, and was an active and well known volunteer at the VA Medical Center in Buffalo. He was the husband of the late Frances (nee Kreis) Benjamin.
He is survived by his son, Alan (Nancy) Benjamin of the Town of Tonawanda; his daughter, Carol (Harold) Benjamin-Solomon of New York City; and three grandchildren, Dana L. Benjamin, Michael D. Benjamin and Douglas Hanania.
There is no visitation. Friends are invited to attend a memorial service at 4:30 PM on Wednesday, October 17, 2007 at the VA Medical Center Chapel on Bailey Avenue in Buffalo. Interment will be cared for privately at Beth Moses Cemetery, Long Island. If desired, memorials to the Buffalo VA Medical Center Volunteer Services, 3495 Bailey Avenue, Buffalo, NY 14215, are preferred. James W. Murray
Former Boy Scout Leader
James William Murray, age 76, of Miami, Florida, formerly of Tonawanda, died Monday, October 15, 2007 at Sisters of Charity Hospital in Buffalo, after a brief illness. Born in Oil City, Pennsylvania, he was the eldest of three sons of the late Francis and Gertrude (nee McMaster) Murray and moved to Tonawanda with his family when he was 12 years old. He was a Boy Scout and Boy Scout leader, guided Boy Scout canoe trips in the Canadian wilderness, and served as a counselor at Camp Ti-Wa-Ya-Ee. A 1949 graduate of Tonawanda High School, he was employed at Spaulding Fibre for more than 20 years, and served the community as a volunteer firefighter with Niagara Hose Company.
In 1979, he moved to Miami, Florida, where he was vice-president of Murray Fence Company, before retiring in 2000. Mr. Murray was a past Exalted Ruler, Trustee and Treasurer of the B.P.O. Elks Lodge No. 948 in Miami, Florida. He and his wife, Clare, traveled to Ireland, England, and various places across the United States to visit their children. JimÂ’s kindness, caring and love will be dearly missed by those who loved him and whom he loved in return. He was a guiding light in our darkness and a shining star in our hearts. He lived a good life and was a good man. The family would like to thank the wonderful staff at Sisters Hospital and Hospice Buffalo for their kindness and care of our loved one.
He is survived by his wife, Clare (Miner) Murray of Miami, Florida; seven children, Jean (Paul) Kovach of Grand Island, NY, Pam Standish (Wisnowski) of North Tonawanda, NY, Kevin (Sonia) Murray of Fairfield, CA, Wendy (Dean) Campanella of Springville, NY, Thomas (Marilyn) Miner of Long Island, NY, Richard (Patricia) Miner of Kenmore, NY, and Joseph (Christine) Miner of Snyder, NY; and a brother, Gerry Murray of Miami, FL. Also surviving are 16 grandchildren, 1 great-granddaughter and many nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Gene Murray.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 AM Friday at St. Francis Chapel on Adam Street in Tonawanda. Friends invited.
