A memorial service for Orville E. Brock, a retired Bethlehem Steel worker and farmer, will be held at 1:30 p.m. today in Faith United Church of Christ, 8651 Boston State Road, Boston.
Brock died Nov. 19, 2001, in a Lakeland, Fla., hospital after a brief illness. He was 92.
Born in Collins, Brock spent much of his life in Boston, where he operated the family farm, raised cattle and sold his produce at a roadside stand. He worked at Bethlehem Steel for more than 30 years, retiring in the 1970s.
Brock moved to Lakeland about 20 years ago. His wife, Alberta, died in 1997.
He is survived by a son, Duane of Hamburg; a brother, Charles of Lakeland; and a sister, Esther Both, also of Lakeland.
Inurnment will be at Lakeside Cemetery, Hamburg.
CABLE - Rutherford 6/1/2002
NIAGARA FALLS - Rutherford Cable, 81, who worked as a laborer in the sodium department of the DuPont Co., died Thursday (May 30, 2002) in Mount St. Mary's Hospital, Lewiston, after a long illness.
He was born in Leeco, Ky., and attended schools in his home state.
During World War II, Cable served in the Army as a paratrooper and was stationed at Fort Niagara, near Youngstown.
While in the service, he met and married the former Dorothy Burridge. She died in 1988.
Cable retired from DuPont in 1975.
He was a member of Wheatfield Post 1451, American Legion, and was a hunter and fisherman.
Survivors include a daughter, Shirley Nye of Grand Island; three brothers, Joseph, Wendell and Ralph; seven sisters, Juanita Combs, Cleta Crim, Edie Clarkson, Mary Alice Kelly, Martha O'Lay, Jean Powell and Agnes; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Monday in Memorial Park Cemetery, Lewiston.
CARDAMONE - Carmela, longtime secretary 6/1/2002
NIAGARA FALLS - Services will be held today for Carmela M. Cardamone, 91, who died Tuesday (May 28, 2002) in Lakewood Health Care Center, Hamburg, after a long illness.
She had been a patient there since April 2001.
Mrs. Cardamone was born Carmela Caterina in Niagara Falls and graduated from Niagara Falls High School.
She worked for 30 years as a secretary at the family-owned Cardamone Real Estate and Insurance Agency, retiring in 1986.
Her husband of 56 years, Joseph J., died in 1996.
Survivors include a son, Dr. Joseph G. of Eden; a daughter, Marzina Bockler of Belmont, Mass.; two sisters, Jennie Cupolo of Niagara Falls, Ont., and Rose Caterina of Niagara Falls; seven grandchildren; and a great-grandson.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10:30 a.m. in St. Joseph's Catholic Church, 1413 Pine Ave., following prayers at 10 in M.J. Colucci & Son Funeral Chapel, 468 19th St. Burial will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery.
DENTON - Earl F., retired police officer 6/1/2002
A Mass of Christian Burial for Earl F. Denton, 74, of West Seneca, a retired Buffalo police officer and former owner of a used car dealership, will be offered at 10:30 a.m. Monday in Our Lady of Victory Basilica, Ridge Road and South Park Avenue, Lackawanna.
Prayers will be said at 10 in Hoy Funeral Home, 3855 Seneca St., West Seneca. Burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery, Lackawanna.
Denton, who was born in Buffalo, died Thursday (May 30, 2002) at home after a long illness.
He served in the Navy during World War II in the Philippines and Pacific. After the war, he operated a gasoline station on Abbott Road. He joined the police department in 1955 and retired in 1978 after he was injured in an accident in which his police motorcycle was struck by a car, according to his family. He was in the Police Traffic Division when he retired.
Denton owned O&D Motors at the same time he was a police officer.
When he was a young man, he raced stock cars throughout the area.
He held various offices in the West Seneca Wheelers Camping Club and was a member of the Buffalo Police Retirement Association. He enjoyed fishing and hunting. He had a winter residence in Florida.
Survivors include his wife of 54 years, the former Doris Kraft; five daughters, Debbie Birkemeier of Orchard Park, Candy Marszalkowski of Derby, Bonnie Baker of Buffalo, Margie Mikulski of Alden and Madonna Kelli Rickerson of Hamburg; two sisters, Marita Glenn of Buffalo and Mariellen Brinkworth of Carmel, Ind.; 13 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
DILENA - Samuel J., retired carpenter 6/1/2002
Samuel J. Dilena, 87, a retired carpenter, died in his Amherst home Thursday (May 30, 2002) following a brief illness.
Born in Buffalo, Dilena was a graduate of Technical High School. He worked as a carpenter for the Buffalo Municipal Housing Authority and the Buffalo Board of Education for more than 20 years.
A woodworker and sports fan, he was a big fan of the New York Yankees. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 185 and the Mussumelesi Italian Society.
Survivors include his wife of 64 years, the former Josephine Strascina; a daughter, Anita Carbonara of Williamsville; two sons, Vincent of Lancaster and Kenneth of Corfu; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 11 a.m. Monday in Holy Angels Church, 348 Porter Ave. Prayers will be said at 10:30 in Amigone Funeral Home, 5200 Sheridan Drive, Amherst.
Entombment will be in Forest Lawn.
DOSBERG - Rosalind G., artist benefactor 6/1/2002
Rosalind G. Dosberg, 87, a homemaker, artist and benefactor, died Monday (May 27, 2002) in The Oaks, DeWitt, after a brief illness.
Born Rosalind Greenberg in Buffalo, she was a graduate of Bennett High School. She earned a bachelor's degree in social work from the University of Michigan.
She married businessman Harry E. Dosberg in 1935, and they were wed for 62 years. He died in 1997.
Mrs. Dosberg served as vice president for two of the family's businesses, Linen Supply and Queen City Laundry.
Mrs. Dosberg and her husband were benefactors to a number of Buffalo-area Jewish organizations, including Temple Beth Zion and the Weinberg Campus in Getzville, which includes the 90-bed Dosberg Manor Adult Home. The family also founded the Jewish Federation of Greater Buffalo's Dosberg Notable Speaker Series, an ongoing lecture series that recently featured National Public Radio's Nina Totenberg.
An accomplished painter, Mrs. Dosberg regularly contributed her artwork to WNED-TV's "Great TV Auction" fund-raiser. She also enjoyed ballet and bowling.
Mrs. Dosberg was also involved in the Sisterhood Temple Beth Zion and was a life member of Hadassah.
Survivors include a daughter, Ralpha Weisberg of DeWitt; a son, Harry E. Jr. of Port St. Lucie, Fla.; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
A funeral was held Wednesday in Forest Lawn Chapel. Burial was in Forest Lawn.
FREDO - Louis J., former jockey trainer 6/1/2002
Louis J. Fredo, 84, a former jockey and trainer who at one time operated a tavern in Buffalo, died Thursday (May 30, 2002) in Kenmore Mercy Hospital after a short illness.
Born in Fort Erie, Ont., he had lived in the Buffalo area for 53 years.
In his youth, Fredo spent a lot of time at the racetrack where he was a jockey and trainer. He later owned horses of his own. He also ran a taxicab business in Fort Erie.
He served in the Royal Canadian Air Force during World War II as a pilot.
He moved to Buffalo in 1949 after marrying the former Arlene I. Gebhardt. They later moved to Kenmore. She died in 1981.
Among the businesses Fredo ran in the Buffalo area was a tavern, the Silver Elm, which he operated with his two brothers, and the Sea Spray carwash in Amherst.
In 1966, he helped start the Arnold Palmer golf driving range in the Town of Tonawanda, which he continued to operate as it became part of Fun-N-Games Amusement Park."
After retiring in 1988, he enjoyed wintering in Sarasota, Fla., but continued to spend summers in Kenmore.
A golfer, he was a member of Sheridan Park Twilight League. He won many golfing trophies.
Among his other interests were spending weekends with his family aboard his cabin cruiser, big band music and crossword puzzles.
His family recalled that he enjoyed searching for the ultimate find and shared his many treasures with family and friends.
He is survived by two daughters, Karen L. Grimaldi of Buffalo and Louanne M. Bass of the Town of Tonawanda; a son, Vincent L. of Buffalo; a sister, Antoinette Maloney of Maine; a brother, Anthony of South Buffalo; and five grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 6:30 p.m. Monday in Greco Funeral Home, 2909 Elmwood Ave., Kenmore. Burial is private.
