Shirlee Eleanor Carda, 52, a Niagara Falls native who taught special needs children, died Sunday (Aug. 4, 2002) in her home in High Point, N.C., after a long battle with cancer.
Born Shirlee Stempien, she received a bachelor's degree and a master's degree from the University at Buffalo.
She taught special needs children at schools in New York, California, Nevada and North Carolina. Most recently, she taught at Fairview Elementary School in High Point. She also was an active member in the school community and a school volunteer.
Mrs. Carda was an active member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in High Point, where she served as a Eucharistic minister.
She enjoyed exercising. She was successful competing in runs and walks.
Survivors include her husband of 23 years, Randy; two daughters, Jessica Rose and Alexa Laurel, both of High Point; a son, Lincoln Joseph of High Point; her mother, Mary Stempien of Niagara Falls; two sisters, Marie Friedlander of Larkspur, Calif., and Nancy Stempien of Niagara Falls; and a brother, Steve Stempien of Amherst.
A Mass of the Resurrection will be offered at 10 a.m. Thursday in Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, High Point.
CLEAVER - Ashton G. 8/5/2002
Services for Ashton G. Cleaver, a retired foreman with New York State Electric & Gas Corp., will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday in Farrell's Funeral Home, Auburn. Burial will be in Fort Hill Cemetery, Auburn.
Cleaver, 76, died Friday (Aug. 2, 2002) in his home in Webster, where he had lived the past year. He lived in West Seneca while working for the utility in Lancaster. He also worked for the company in Auburn. He retired in 1986 after 40 years' service.
He served with the Marines in the Pacific during World War II.
His wife, Alice E. Schellenger Cleaver, died in 1974.
Survivors include two sons, Gary D. of Auburn and Bruce S. of Webster; two daughters, Donna M. Hatch of Henrietta and Karen Wygal of Irondequoit; a brother, Donald of Raleigh, N.C; a sister, Frances Anderson of Orchard Park; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
DIXON - Robert A., miner and welder 8/5/2002
WATERPORT - Robert A. Dixon, 87, a World War II veteran and former miner and welder, died Saturday (Aug. 3, 2002) in Medina Memorial Hospital after a brief illness.
Dixon was born in Osceola Mills, Pa., and attended schools in that area.
In 1941, shortly after his marriage, he joined the Army. He was a tank gunner in the 3rd Armored Division in Europe until 1945, when he was discharged. He attained the rank of staff sergeant.
After the war, he returned to Pennsylvania and worked as a coal miner in the Philipsburg area until 1956. He then moved to the City of Tonawanda and worked 20 years as a welder at Columbus McKinnon Corp.
After retiring in 1977, Dixon moved back to Philipsburg. He relocated to Waterport in 1986.
He was a member of Oak Orchard Assembly of God Church.
He was an avid hunter and a member of the National Rifle Association.
Survivors include his wife of 60 years, the former Gertrude L. Cassick; a son, Richard L. of the City of Tonawanda; two daughters, Harriet Dobson of Lake Wales, Fla., and Arlene Rollins of Turlock, Calif.; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Oak Orchard Assembly of God Church, Ridge Road, Medina. Burial will be in Acacia Park Cemetery, Pendleton.
MALINOWSKI - Joseph F., tax consultant 8/5/2002
Joseph F. Malinowski, 53, of Clarence, a corporate tax consultant, died Friday (Aug. 2, 2002) in Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospital, Amherst, after a brief illness.
Born in Perth Amboy, N.J., he earned a bachelor of science degree in commerce from Rider University in Trenton, N.J., and attended St. John's University's Staten Island Campus, where he took courses in corporate tax accounting.
He joined Gulton Industries in Princeton, N.J., in 1971. After the company was acquired by Mark IV Industries, he came to the Buffalo area in 1988. He was corporate tax manager when he left Mark IV Industries last year to become a partner in Frederic Cook and Co. Tax Advisers, LLC. He was a member of the Tax Executives Institute.
Malinowski served for seven years in the Army Reserve's 699th Engineering Company, 78th Division, in Jersey City.
An avid basketball player, he played on CYO teams as a youth and was a co-founder of the St. Stephen's Parish Athletic Committee in Perth Amboy, where he coached girls basketball and ran basketball camps. He also loved gardening.
Survivors include his wife of 31 years, the former Christine S. Suski; three daughters, Cathie Jo Hnat of Williamsville, Melissa Coniglio of Norman, Okla., and Jennifer of Clarence; his father, Joseph Sr. of Perth Amboy; a sister, Debra Donatacci of Perth Amboy; and three grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday in St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church, 200 St. Gregory Court, Amherst, after prayers at 8:45 in Amigone Funeral Home, 5200 Sheridan Drive, Amherst. Burial arrangements are incomplete.
NORMAN - Ricky A. 8/5/2002
NIAGARA FALLS - Ricky A. Norman, 46, died Friday (Aug. 2, 2002) in his home after a brief illness.
Norman was born in Niagara Falls and attended local schools.
He lived for many years in Tyler, Texas, where he owned and operated a general maintenance business until retiring because of disability in 1998. He returned to Niagara Falls the following year.
Survivors include three sons, Ricky Jr., Marc A. and Cameron D., all of Texas; four daughters, Ann Marie Cracknell and Tara Fitzsimmons, both of Niagara Falls, and Rickie A. and Christina, both of Texas; his mother, Mary Lou of Niagara Falls; eight brothers, Robert G. of Florida, John Donavan of Lewiston, Vincent Morello and Douglas, both of Niagara Falls, David Perman, William Vivian and Robert, all of Florida, and Robert of California; five sisters, Deborah A. Perricelli of Niagara Falls, Beverly and Roberta, both of California, and Lu-Ann Miller and Tina Boileau, both of Florida; and five grandchildren.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Rhoney Funeral Home, 1124 Ontario Ave. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Lewiston.
ORLIKOWSKI - Henry B. 8/5/2002
A Mass of Christian Burial for Henry B. Orlikowski, a retired Trico Products Corp. worker, will be offered at 11:15 a.m. Tuesday in St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Winter Haven, Fla.
Orlikowski, 75, of Auburndale, Fla., died Friday (Aug. 2, 2002) in Lakeland Regional Medical Center, Lakeland, Fla.
The former West Seneca resident was a mechanic and tool-and-die set-up man at Trico before retiring in 1988 and moving to Florida.
Orlikowski served with the Army in Japan after World War II. He was commander of Sloan Memorial Post 355, Veterans of Foreign Wars, from 1978 to 1980.
His wife of 54 years, Mary T. Sporski Orlikowski, died Jan. 31.
Survivors include three daughters, Joyce Spahr of Buffalo, Janice Kauhs of Austin, Texas, and Jessica Gartman of Houston; a sister, Rita Stevens of Katy, Texas; and eight grandchildren.
PFAFF - George C. 8/5/2002
BENNINGTON - George C. Pfaff, 45, a self-employed mechanic and the owner of Crying Pines Garage in Bennington, died unexpectedly Sunday (Aug. 4, 2002) in his Bennington home.
Born in Batavia, he served in the Army from 1975 to 1978.
Survivors include a son, George W.B. of Attica; a daughter, Mallory R. of Attica; his parents, George and Beatrice of Bennington; a brother, Lance of Michigan; and three sisters, Linda LaWare of Bennington, Suzanne West of Orangeville and Jacquelyne Leach of Bennington.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in St. Paul's United Church of Christ, 11 Washington St., Attica.
