Sister Mary McLaughlin, a longtime educator and pastoral minister in Western New York, died Friday (Sept. 6, 2002) in Mercy Hospital in South Buffalo after a short illness. She was 87.
She was born Mary J. McLaughlin in Olean in 1915 and attended Olean schools, including St. Mary of the Angels, Olean High School and Westbrook Business School.
Sister McLaughlin, formerly known in religious life as Sister Mary Aquinas, entered the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas community on Sept. 24, 1939, and professed her final vows on Aug. 27, 1942. She was a member of the Sisters of Mercy for more than 62 years.
Sister McLaughlin received a bachelor's degree in social studies from Canisius College and a master's degree in the same field from Niagara University. She also attended the Catholic University of America.
She taught at several schools in Buffalo run by the Sisters of Mercy, as well as Our Lady of the Rosary, St. Teresa in Niagara Falls and SS. Peter and Paul in Jamestown.
Sister McLaughlin served as assistant treasurer at Trocaire College in Buffalo.
As a pastoral minister, she served at Our Lady of the Angels in Olean, St. Bernadette's in Orchard Park, and Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Lake View, where she worked for many years.
In her later years, Sister McLaughlin served her order through her prayers at the Mercy Center.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 7 p.m. Monday in the Mercy Center Chapel, 625 Abbott Road. Burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery, Lackawanna.
PEARSON - Stanton, brewing industry exec 9/7/2002
Private services are planned for Stanton Pearson, 74, a former brewing industry executive who died Thursday (Sept. 5, 2002) in his Williamsville home following a brief illness. Burial will be in SS. Peter & Paul Cemetery, Williamsville.
Born in Milwaukee, Pearson served in the Navy during World War II and graduated from the University of Notre Dame with a business degree in 1950.
He was a salesman for Miller Brewing Co. in Milwaukee from 1950 to 1961, when he moved to Labatt Breweries of Canada as vice president of U.S. sales. From 1973 to 1987, he was vice president of sales for Schmidt Brewing Co. of Philadelphia.
Pearson, who had lived in the Buffalo area since 1961, worked for Try-It Distributors in Lancaster from 1987 to 1991.
He was a member of the board of governors of Park Country Club and volunteered for Bornhava. He enjoyed card games, fishing and golf.
Survivors include his wife of 51 years, the former Patricia Grieb; two daughters, Kathy Lanza of Williamsville and Mary Martin of Snyder; and three sons, Mark of Boston, Jeff of Stuart, Fla., and David of Hackettstown, N.J.
RAPACH - John 9/7/2002
John Rapach, a retired Allied Chemical supervisor, died Friday (Sept. 6, 2002) in Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospital, Amherst, after a brief illness. He was 88.
A native of Mahanoy City, Pa., he graduated from Mahanoy City High School and served in the Army in the Philippines and elsewhere in the Pacific Theater and Asia during World War II.
He came to Buffalo in 1946 and worked at Allied Chemical for more than 30 years before retiring in the mid-1970s.
Rapach, who lived in Amberleigh Retirement Center, Williamsville, was a life member of Harvey Morin Post 2940, Veterans of Foreign Wars.
He enjoyed opera and classical music and was a Buffalo Bills fan.
His wife, Teresa, died in 1990. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10:45 a.m. Monday in St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church, 200 St. Gregory Court, Williamsville, after prayers at 10 in Amigone Funeral Home, 5200 Sheridan Drive, Amherst.
RYAN SR. - Patrick J., ex-reporter ECC prof 9/7/2002
Patrick J. Ryan Sr., 59, of Buffalo, an associate professor at Erie Community College and former reporter for the Buffalo Courier-Express, died unexpectedly Wednesday (Sept. 4, 2002) in Mercy Hospital, Buffalo.
Born in Buffalo, Ryan graduated from Annunciation High School in 1961, and earned a bachelor's degree in English from Canisius College in 1971 and a master's in literature from Buffalo State College in 1995.
Ryan was president of the Canisius College Evening Students Association in 1967-68.
He began his career at the Courier-Express as a copy boy in 1961 and worked in a number of positions until the newspaper closed in 1982.
Ryan began reporting as a general-assignment reporter, became the Buffalo police beat reporter and then covered Southtowns political and court news.
He covered the Attica State Prison riots in 1971 and wrote a variety of columns on social issues, winning a Page One Award in 1980.
He was treasurer of the Buffalo Newspaper Guild from 1977 to 1980.
Ryan became involved in local Republican Party activities after the Courier-Express closed, becoming an aide and campaign adviser to a number of candidates and elected officials.
He was chairman of the Delaware District Republican Committee and secretary of the City of Buffalo Republican Committee.
Ryan taught English and literature at ECC's City Campus and then at the South Campus from 1987 until his death.
He was the faculty adviser for the student newspaper, the Southern Mirror, for several years.
Ryan also was active in civic affairs including the Elmwood Avenue Business Association as a co-owner of Arabesque-The Dance Shop from 1978 to 1988, and as a Boy Scout leader for Troop 2, Elmwood Avenue, from 1986 to 1988.
Survivors include his wife, the former Jeri Johnson; two sons, Patrick Jr. and James, both of Buffalo; a daughter, Bridget Durinick of Long Island; a brother, James D. of New York City; a sister, Jane Ayres of Wilson; an adopted son, Walter Trautwein, and an adopted daughter, Virginia, both of Lockport; and three grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 9:30 a.m. today in Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, 1035 Delaware Ave. Burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery, Lackawanna.
