Warren M. Heldwein, age 59, of Grand Island, died unexpectedly, Wednesday, September 15, 2004.
Born July 30, 1945 in Buffalo, he was the son of the late Norman and Margaret (nee Steger) Heldwein, and was raised in St. James Parish in Buffalo and attended Seneca Vocational High School, from which he graduated in 1963. He had been a resident of Grand Island for more than 35 years. Mr. Heldwein was a member of the New York State Army National Guard Unit at the former Delaware Street Armory in Tonawanda, from 1964 until 1970, and had been employed as a communications technician for AT & T until retiring in 2001. He was the husband of the late Janice (nee Heimback) Heldwein, who died in 2000.
He is survived by his children, Michael (Christina) Heldwein, Thomas (Barbara) Heldwein and Donna (Randy) York; two brothers, John (Chris) Heldwein and Norman (Nancy) Heldwein; and his loving companion, Eleanor Peart. Also surviving are eight grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Friends may call from 2-4 and 6-8 PM Saturday only at the Hamp Funeral Home, Inc., Adam and Seymour Streets in Tonawanda, where a prayer service will be held at 8 PM Saturday; the Rev. Sister Saint Augustine Ball, SSMN

Sister Saint Augustine, born Marcella Ball, who recently celebrated her 76th anniversary as a Sister of St. Mary of Namur, died Friday, September 17, 2004 at Marycrest, the infirmary for the order. She was 95. Born January 17, 1909 in Lourdes parish in central Buffalo, daughter of the late Jacob and Anna (nee Rohs) Ball, she joined the order on February 2, 1928. Sister Saint Augustine attended St. Mary’s Seminary and Canisius College, where she earned her Bachelor’s of Art Degree in 1936. She earned her Master’s Degree in 1940 and then attained her Ph.D. in mathematics in 1942 at Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C.. Sister St. Augustine taught at Mt. St. Mary Academy in Kenmore and at Annunciation High School in Buffalo; she served as principal at both schools. She also taught at St. Joseph’s Academy in Lockport. She held positions as professor at Canisius College, the University of Buffalo, and Buffalo State College. For several years she was a research scientist trainee and assistant professor at Roswell Park Cancer Institute.
During her years at Mt. St. Mary, Sister Saint Augustine organized a service group, God’s Peace Corps, for young women. Under her initiative these young women lived and worked in central city parishes. She was General Councilor in her congregation for a time, working in that capacity in Namur, Belgium, as well as traveling to various missions. For two years, she served as Chaplain in a home maintained by the congregation in Monifeith, Scotland. After her retirement from teaching, Sister Saint Augustine was engaged in many pastoral activities, including parish work at St. Joseph’s in Lockport and at Annunciation in Buffalo, and organizing and leading scripture sharing groups. She introduced many to a centering method of prayer. She influenced many persons and formed many lasting friendships during her long and active life. Her constancy in keeping contact and to correspondence was appreciated by many.
She is survived by her sisters in the congregation of St. Mary of Namur, several nieces and nephews, and her cousin, Rev. Msgr. Richard Wetter.
Sister Saint Augustine donated her body to the University of Buffalo for research purposes. A Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at 7 PM Tuesday at St. Mary Center on Lafayette Avenue in Buffalo. Friends invited. Dorothy E. Hellenbeck
Longtime Resident of Westchester Apartments
Dorothy (nee Hand) Hellenbeck, of the Town of Tonawanda, died September 29, 2004, at the Niagara Lutheran Home in Buffalo, after a brief illness. Born in Port Dahlousie, Ontario, she was the daughter of the late William and Effie (nee Cooper) Hand, and was married to F. Lincoln Hellenbeck on February 3, 1934, in the Star of the Sea Church in Port Dahlousie. After her marriage, she and her husband moved to Tonawanda. She and her husband were avid square dancers and belonged to the Dan -D- Squares in Buffalo. In recent years, she knitted mittens for needy children and prayed continually for the well-being of all her family and friends. They moved into the Westchester Apartments in December of 1983; they were the first tenants to move into the building. Her beloved husband, F. Lincoln Hellenbeck, died in 1988.
She is survived by her sister, Ruth Phelan of St. Catharines, Ontario; and several nieces and nephews.
Services were cared for privately at the request of Mrs. Hellenbeck. Arrangements were entrusted to the care of the Hamp Funeral Home, Inc., Adam and Seymour Streets in Tonawanda.
Genevieve Alice Berhalter
Retired Tonawanda Teacher
Genevieve (nee McCormick) Berhalter, age 89, of Tonawanda, died Tuesday, October 5, 2004, at the Weinberg Campus in Amherst. Born January 22, 1915, in Tonawanda, she was the daughter of the late Thomas and Jennie (nee Kennedy) McCormick and had been a resident of Tonawanda for the greater part of her life. Her father was a canal boat captain and owned several boats that traveled the Erie Canal between New York City and Buffalo. Mrs. Berhalter was an elementary school teacher in the City of Tonawanda before retiring, and had been active in numerous clubs and organizations including the Tonawanda Education Assn. and New York State Retired Teachers Assn.. She had a great interest and pride that her husband and brothers served our country during World War II, as well as in her Irish heritage. She was the wife of the late Robert L. Berhalter, who died in 1986, and sister of the late James, Thomas, Willard, Donald, and Jerome McCormick.
She is survived by her daughter, Mary Alice Berhalter of Tonawanda, and many nieces and nephews.

Steven E. Fazekas
Army Veteran Retired from General Motors
Steven E. Fazekas, age 85, of Tonawanda, formerly of Buffalo, died Monday, October 4, 2004 at Kenmore Mercy Hospital after a brief illness. Born August 1, 1919 in Lackawanna, he was the son of the late Steven and Susan (nee Csorba) Fazekas. He served as a lieutenant in the US Army Ordinance Corps during WWII, and then continued to serve during the post-war demilitarization of Germany. Mr. Fazekas was employed as an inspector at the GM Powertrain Plant in the Town of Tonawanda, before retiring in 1980.
He is survived by his wife, Bruna (nee Fini) Fazekas; two sons, Steven (Carol) Fazekas and Michael (Gayle) Fazekas; two daughters, Suzanne (Salvatore) Amatrano and Sandra J. Fazekas; a brother, Edward (Joan) Fazekas; and a sister, Emma (George) Tutuska. Also surviving are five grandchildren, Michele, Daniel, Kristen, Jennifer and Andrew Fazekas; and several nieces and nephews.

Rosemary L. Hassler

Rosemary L. Hassler, age 84, of Tonawanda, died Wednesday, October 6, 2004, at Sheridan Manor. Born in Buffalo, she was the daughter of the late John and Cecilia (nee Fess) Hassler and had been a resident of Tonawanda since 1953. A member of St. Francis of Assisi Parish, she had been employed at Springer Insurance Company in Tonawanda before retiring. She was the sister of the late Gloria Emminger, Rev. Msgr. Joseph Hassler, Raymond Hassler, and John Hassler.
She is survived by her sister, Suzanne (Gordon) Oswald; and her sister-in-law, Arlene Hassler. Also surviving are 15 nieces and nephews, and several great nieces and nephews.

Dorothy (nee Neylon) Kelly, age 89, of North Tonawanda, formerly of the Town of Tonawanda, died Sunday, October 10, 2004 at Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospital after a brief illness. Born June 12, 1915 in Hudson, New York, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Joanna (nee Swayze) Neylon and had been a resident of the Town of Tonawanda until 1985, when she moved to North Tonawanda. Mrs. Kelly was a registered nurse at Millard Fillmore Hospital in Buffalo before retiring. She was the wife of the late James F. Kelly, Sr., who died in 1994.
She is survived by two daughters, Eileen (Donald) Reed of Lockport, and Maureen (Richard) Roth of the Town of Tonawanda; and a son, James (Diane) Kelly, Jr. of Cambria. Also surviving are 8 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.
