A Mass of Christian Burial for Ellen G. Quinn will be offered at 9:30 a.m. today in Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, 1035 Delaware Ave.
Ms. Quinn, a Buffalo resident and former nursing professional, died Monday (Oct. 23, 2000) in Millard Fillmore Hospital. She was 92.
Born in Cuba, N.Y., Ms. Quinn graduated from the Deaconess School of Nursing and Buffalo State College and earned a degree in education at the University at Buffalo.
She spent several years in California, then returned to Buffalo, where she served as a nursing supervisor at Buffalo General Hospital. She was eventually promoted to assistant director of nursing before retiring in the early 1970s.
Ms. Quinn was active in several women's organizations, including the American Association of University Women, the Interclub Council and the Business and Professional Women's Club. She also was president of the local Altrusa Club and held regional leadership positions with the organization.
She enjoyed traveling throughout Europe and Asia.
Burial will be in Our Lady of the Angels Cemetery, Cuba.
ROARKE - Gertrude M. 10/25/00
A Mass of Christian Burial for Gertrude M. Roarke, a homemaker and seamstress, will be offered at 11 a.m. today in Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, 263 Claremont Ave., Kenmore.
Prayers will be said at 10:15 in Amigone Funeral Home, 2600 Sheridan Drive, Town of Tonawanda. Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Town of Tonawanda.
Mrs. Roarke died Sunday (Oct. 22, 2000) in the Schofield Residence in Kenmore. She was 100.
The former Gertrude Shaw was born in Boston, Mass., where she graduated from high school. She was a hat designer and a talented seamstress, and married Hugh Roarke in 1927. The couple moved to Kenmore, where he worked.
Mrs. Roarke was a homemaker and raised her three daughters after her husband's death in 1943.
She enjoyed sewing for her children and grandchildren.
Mrs. Roarke is survived by two daughters, Trudy Bauer of Kenmore and Janet Bouley of Fairport; 12 children; and 24 great-grandchildren.
SCHEUERLE JR. - Conrad 10/25/00
A Mass of Christian Burial for Conrad Scheuerle Jr. of Cheektowaga, a retired railroad worker, will be offered at 10:30 a.m. today in Our Lady Help of Christians Catholic Church, 4125 Union Road, Cheektowaga.
Prayers will be said at 10 in Urban-Amigone Funeral Home, 3645 Genesee St. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Scheuerle died Sunday (Oct. 22, 2000) in Hospice Buffalo, Cheektowaga, after a lengthy illness. He was 75.
A lifelong Buffalo-area resident, Scheuerle worked fir 45 years with the railroad formerly known as New York Central. He started as a signalman and was a dispatcher when he retired in 1987.
Scheuerle was a member of the Western New York Railroad Historical Society, the National Association of Retired and Veteran Railway Employees, and Happy Is Active Seniors, a social group at Infant of Prague Church.
Survivors include his wife, the former Patricia A. Puncheon; two daughters, Anne Haffa of Cheektowaga and Mary Beth Onuffer of Depew; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
STRICKLAND - Catherine M. 10/25/00
Catherine M. Strickland, a longtime resident of the City of Tonawanda, died Monday (Oct. 23, 2000) in her home after a lengthy illness. She was 89.
Born in Yatesboro, Pa., the former Catherine Mitchell lived in the city for more than 70 years. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Tonawanda Senior Citizens and the local and national chapters of AARP.
Survivors include her husband of 61 years, Arthur H., and a daughter, Judie of the Town of Tonawanda.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday in John O. Roth Funeral Home, 25 William St., City of Tonawanda.
WILKERSON - Ann Benton 10/25/00
Ann Benton Wilkerson, 81, of Buffalo, a retired bookbinder, died last Wednesday (Oct. 18, 2000) in Buffalo General Hospital after a short illness.
Born Ann Williams in Covington, Ga., she moved to Buffalo in 1941. She married Charles Wilkerson Sr. in 1974. She worked as a bookbinder for Quebecor in Depew for 12 years, retiring in 1981. Her husband died in 1997.
Mrs. Wilkerson enjoyed traveling and cooking.
She is survived by three sons, Raymond Benton of Washington, D.C., George Benton and Charles "Chuckie" Jr.; a brother, Melvin; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Services will be held at 8 p.m. today in United House of Prayer for All People, 60 Howard St. Burial will be in Acacia Park Cemetery, Pendleton.
BROCK - Walter, attorney active in cerebral palsy groups dies 12/17/00
A memorial service for Walter Brock, 85, an attorney, World War II combat veteran and former president of the United Cerebral Palsy Association of Western New York and New York State, will be held at 2 p.m. today in Rosewood Mausoleum at Forest Lawn.
Brock, who was born in Buffalo, died Friday (Dec. 15, 2000) in Heathwood Health Care Center, Amherst, after a long illness.
He graduated from Lafayette High School and was a member of the University of Buffalo Law School Class of 1939.
During World War II, Brock, a second lieutenant, was a forward observer in the infantry when he was wounded by mortar fire in Battle of Monte Cassino in Italy. After he recovered from his wounds, he was transferred to the Judge Advocate General Department for the rest of the war.
His military decorations included the Purple Heart, the Combat Infantryman's Badge and the Bronze Star.
He maintained a private law practice, specializing in real estate and probate law for many years until his retirement in November 1993.
Brock was a president of the local and state United Cerebral Palsy associations, the Ellicottville Ski Club and the Temple Beth Zion Men's Club. He became dedicated to the cerebral palsy organization while serving on the board of the United Way.
"I had never before seen children with cerebral palsy," he once said, recalling his reasons for devoting so much time to the groups. "I was so impressed by the agency that I could not stop thinking about it on my way back (to work)."
Brock made a U-turn and returned to the cerebral palsy site instead of continuing on to his downtown law office. He later would become a member of the national board of directors of the organization, which honored him by naming its Genesee Street facility for adults with the condition the Walter Brock Center.
He also served on the board of Calasanctius School and was a volunteer at Millard Fillmore Hospital.
He loved to ski and had a second home near the slopes in Ellicottvile. He also enjoyed gardening.
Survivors include his wife, the former Arline Annunziato Klein; a son, Daniel of Israel; a stepson, Howard J. Klein of Louisville, Ky.; several grandchildren; and a stepgrandchild.
BRYANT - Juanita Payne, longtime accountant 12/17/00
Juanita Payne Bryant of Amherst, a longtime accountant for Moore Business Forms, died Friday (Dec. 15, 2000) in Buffalo General Hospital after a long illness. She was 59.
Born in Jefferson County, Ala., Bryant moved to Niagara Falls in 1951 and was a 1959 graduate of Niagara Falls High School. She graduated from Niagara University in 1965 and was one of the first African-American women to earn a bachelor's degree in business administration from Niagara University.
She was an accountant for Moore in Niagara Falls for 11 years, beginning in 1970.
Mrs. Bryant is survived by her husband of 31 years, Lenard; a son, Deric A. of Amherst; three sisters, Roberta Harvell of Inglewood, Calif., Andrea Payne of Atlanta and Eula McCoy of Birmingham, Ala.; and two brothers, Roman Payne of Inglewood and Robert B. Payne.|
Services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday in Williamson Funeral Home, 635 Main St. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery.
