Franz Engelhardt, age 68, of the City of Tonawanda, died unexpectedly Tuesday, May 20, 2003, at his residence. Born in Elek, Hungary, he was the son of the late Johann and Katherina (nee Schillinger) Engelhardt, and had been a resident of Tonawanda since 1958. Mr. Engelhardt was employed as a production foreman at BOC Edwards Pharmaceutical Systems in the Town of Tonawanda before retiring six years ago. He was also an avid hunter and fisherman.
He is survived by his wife, Evelyn Engelhardt; a daughter, Rita (Edward) Rivers of Wheatfield; and a son, Frank (Molly) Engelhardt of North Tonawanda. Also surviving are three grandchildren, Kristin, Michelle and Hunter.
Friends may call from 7-9 PM on Thursday only at the Hamp Funeral Home, Inc., Adam and Seymour Streets, Tonawanda. Services will be cared for privately at the convenience of the family.
Thomas F. Swartout
Vietnam Veteran
Thomas F. Swartout, age 57, of the Town of Niagara, formerly of Tonawanda, died unexpectedly, Thursday, May 29, 2003, at Mercy Hospital in Buffalo. Born in Buffalo, he was the son of the late Cornelius and Myrtle (nee Haggerty) Swartout and had been a resident of Tonawanda for the greater part of his life. An Air Force Veteran of the Vietnam War, he was employed as a truck driver by LaFond Express in Buffalo. Mr. Swartout was an avid automobile and Harley Davidson enthusiast, and proud master of his pet Weimaraner, Maggie.
He is survived by his wife, Peggy (nee Connolly) Swartout; two daughters, Sherry (Tracy Himmelback) Swartout and Tammy (Chris Baker) Swartout; and a brother, Harry (Michelle) Swartout.
Friends may call from 2-6 PM Saturday only at the Hamp Funeral Home, Inc., Adam and Seymour Streets, Tonawanda, where a prayer of farewell will be said at 6 PM Saturday.
Steve S. Lucas
Active at St. Edmund Parish
Steve S. Lucas, age 77, of the Town of Tonawanda, died Monday, June 2, 2003, at his residence after a brief illness. Born April 24, 1926 in Kenmore, he was the son of the late Michael and Mary (nee Virosko) Lukacz, and was an Army Veteran of WWII. Mr. Lucas was employed at GTE Sylvania in Buffalo, and then for many years in Batavia, before retiring. He was an active member of St. Edmund R.C. Church, where he served as a Eucharistic minister and belonged to the choir. He was a member of the Tonawanda Camera Club and was a volunteer tax preparer for AARP.
He is survived by his wife of more than 54 years, Grace (nee Abel) Lucas; a son, Steven (Paula) Lucas; a daughter, Carol (William) Paciorek; a brother, John (Shirley) Lukacz; and a sister, Elizabeth Barry. Also surviving are four grandchildren, Laura, Michael, Holly, and Noelle, and many nieces and nephews.
There will be no visitation. Friends are invited to celebrate a Memorial Mass at 1 PM Saturday, June 7, at St. Edmund R.C. Church, on Ellicott Creek Road in the Town of Tonawanda. If desired, memorials to the Hospice Foundation, 225 Como Park Blvd, Cheektowaga, NY 14227-1480, are preferred by the family.
Jennie R. Toporek
Resident of Raintree Island
Jennie (nee Wegrzynek) Toporek, age 81, of the Town of Tonawanda, died Sunday, June 8, 2003, at her residence. Born August 28, 1921, in Buffalo, she was the daughter of the late Stanley and Josephine (nee Sokolowska) Wegrzynek. Mrs. Toporek was a member of St. Edmund R.C. Church, a former member of the Amvets Auxillary, and enjoyed doing crossword puzzles. She was the wife of the late Henry F. Toporek, who died October 18, 1988.
She is survived by two daughters, Anne (Harold) Long and Nancy (Roger) DeBlauw; and a son, William (Dotty) Toporek. Also surviving are four grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
Friends may call from 4-8 PM Wednesday at the Hamp Funeral Home, Inc., Adam & Seymour Streets in Tonawanda. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 AM Thursday at St. Edmund R.C. Church in the Town of Tonawanda. Friends invited. Interment at Mt. Olivet Cemetery. If desired, memorials for Disabled American Veterans are preferred by the family.
Irmgard Guay
Retired Cook at DeGraff Hospital
Irmgard (nee Franz) Guay, age 76, of North Tonawanda, died Monday, June 9, 2003, at DeGraff Memorial Hospital after a brief illness. Born in Nurn, Germany, she had been a resident of North Tonawanda for more than 40 years. Ms. Guay was employed as a cook at DeGraff Hospital before retiring, and was a senior companion for the Health Association of Niagara County. She was a member of Ascension R.C. Church in North Tonawanda, and the North Tonawanda Senior Citizens.
She is survived by a son in Denmark, and a dear friend, William A. Blair of North Tonawanda.

Martha Russell
Retired Medical Assistant
Martha (nee Stanton) Russell, age 96, of Tonawanda, died Saturday, June 14, 2003, at the Schofield Residence. Born October 6, 1906, in Ernest, PA, she was the daughter of the late Samuel and Hannah (nee Daniels) Stanton and had been a resident of Tonawanda for almost 75 years. Mrs. Russell worked as a LPN at DeGraff Hospital and then as a medical assistant for Dr. Robert Rose, in North Tonawanda, before retiring. She was a past president of the Erie County Medical Secretaries Association, and enjoyed playing pinochle with her husband and family. She was the wife of the late Frank Russell, who died in 1957, and mother of the late Dorothy Zasimowick and James Archibald.
She is survived by two sons, Robert (Bess) Archibald of Fayetteville, PA, and Frank "Bill" (Carol) Russell of Amherst; and a daughter, Martha "Mickey" (William) Sheldon of Tonawanda. Also surviving are 13 grandchildren, many great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Friends may call from 4-8 PM Monday only at the Hamp Funeral Home, Inc., Adam and Seymour Streets, Tonawanda, where a prayer service will be held at 11 AM Tuesday, Msgr. John Kempczynksi officiating. Antoinette Manfredi
Lifelong Resident of North Tonawanda
Antoinette Manfredi, of North Tonawanda, died Wednesday; July 2, 2003, at DeGraff Memorial Hospital after a long illness. Born in North Tonawanda, she was the daughter of the late Thomas and Carmella (nee Sposato) Manfredi and had been a lifelong resident of North Tonawanda. A member of Ascension R.C. Church, she was employed at Wurlitzer Company in North Tonawanda until the plant closed in the late 1970's. She was the sister of the late Josephine Adamo, Mary Sacco, Louisa Carter, Michael Manfredi, and Albert Manfredi..
She is survived by two sisters, Flora V. Manfredi and Angeline Manfredi; two nieces, Elvira Brodfuehrer and Kathleen Brzezinski; two nephews, James A. Carter, II and Michael Manfredi; and a sister-in-law, Eva Manfredi. Also surviving are 11 great nieces and nephews and 17 great, great nieces and nephews.
