Joanne M. Seguin, age 72, of North Tonawanda, died Monday, March 12, 2007 at Williamsville Suburban Health & Rehabilitation Center in Amherst. Born June 5, 1934 in Tonawanda, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Marie (nee Werkley) Seguin. A graduate of Tonawanda High School and Bryant and Stratton Business School, she was employed at Sinclair Broadcasting on Grand Island, before becoming ill.
She is survived by several cousins.
The family will receive friends after 1 PM on Friday at the Hamp Funeral Home, Inc., Adam and Seymour Streets in Tonawanda, where a Memorial Service will be held at 1:30 PM Friday; the Rev. Kenneth Wood officiating. Friends invited. Interment will be cared for privately at Elmlawn Cemetery, Town of Tonawanda.
Harold Dimitri
Army Veteran of WWII
Harold Dimitri, age 89, of North Tonawanda, died suddenly on Sunday, March 18, 2007 at his residence. Born April 27, 1917 in Buffalo, he was the son of the late Andrew and Mary (nee Limbach) Dimitri and was a longtime resident of Buffalo before moving to North Tonawanda in 1989. An Army Veteran of WWII, Mr. Dimitri served in the 573rd Signal Air Warning Battalion, which was stationed in England. He worked in the office at Bethlehem Steel Company, where he later became president of the Accounting Department Local of the United Steel Workers' Union until retiring in 1979. He was the husband of the late Mary (nee Luber) Dimitri, who died December 23, 2006.
He is survived by three sons, John (Kathy) Dimitri of Pittsford, NY, Douglas (Karen) Dimitri of North Tonawanda, and Gerald (Dona) Dimitri of West Seneca; and two sisters, Dorothy Dimitri and Marie Metzger Also surviving are 7 grandchildren, Christopher, Kimberly, Ashley, Jaime, Jason, Brendan, and Michael.
There will be no visitation. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 1 PM Wednesday, April 4, at St. Edmund R.C. Church on Ellicott Creek Road in the Town of Tonawanda. Friends invited. Interment will be cared for privately at Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Town of Tonawanda. Arrangements entrusted to the care of the Hamp Funeral Home, Inc., Adam and Seymour Streets, Tonawanda.
Matthew C. Caron
Middle School Teacher
Matthew C. Caron, age 26, of Lawrenceville, Georgia, formerly of North Tonawanda, died unexpectedly, Wednesday, April 4, 2007. Born in North Tonawanda, he had been a lifelong resident of this area before moving to Georgia three years ago. A graduate of North Tonawanda High School, where he was an accomplished wrestler, and the State University of New York at Fredonia, he was employed as a teacher at Sweetwater Middle School in Lawrenceville, Georgia.
He is survived by his parents, Michael and Judy (nee O’Connor) Caron of North Tonawanda; his fiancée, Erin Szewczyk of North Tonawanda; three brothers, Jason (Kimberly) Caron, Paul Caron and Joshua Caron, all of North Tonawanda; and his grandparents, Paul and Mary Caron of Pittsfield, MA, and Betty (the late Charles) O’Connor of Tonawanda. Also surviving are a niece, Ariana, and many aunts, uncles and cousins.
Friends may call from 2-4 and 7-9 PM on Friday and Saturday at the Hamp Funeral Home, Inc., Adam and Seymour Streets, Tonawanda. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 AM Monday at St. Francis of Assisi Church on Broad Street in Tonawanda. Friends invited. Inurnment at St. Francis Chapel Columbarium, Tonawanda.
Howard R. Starks, Sr.
Member of Teamsters' Union
Howard R. Starks, Sr., age 90, of Tonawanda, died Sunday, April 8, 2007 at the VA Medical Center in Buffalo, after a long illness. Born in Olean, NY, he was the son of the late Mark and Bertha Starks and was an Army Veteran of WWII. A resident of Tonawanda for more than 20 years, he was a truck driver for Dixie Ohio Trucking in Buffalo, and was a member of the Teamsters' Union. He was the husband of the late Christina F. Starks, who died April 23, 2001, and father of the late Robert Starks.
He is survived by his daughter, Shirley (Glenn) Richeal of Tonawanda; his son, Howard (Judith) Starks, Jr. of Hamburg; his daughter-in-law, Patricia Starks of Buffalo; and six grandchildren, Russell (Mary Jane), Richard, Steven (Carrie), Michael (Beth), Dan, and Darcy. Also surviving are three great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 4-6 PM on Thursday only at the Hamp Funeral Home, Inc., Adam and Seymour Streets, Tonawanda, where a memorial service will be held at 6 PM Thursday; the Rev. Kenneth Comer officiating. Friends invited. Interment will be cared for privately at Lakeside Cemetery in Hamburg.
Martin Gerhardt, Jr.
Retired Army Veteran
Martin Gerhardt, Jr., age 60, of Tonawanda, died Saturday, April 14, 2007 at DeGraff Memorial Hospital after a long illness. Born in North Tonawanda, he was the son of the late Martin and Barbara (nee Schenecker) Gerhardt and was a lifelong resident of Tonawanda. Mr. Gerhardt served in the US Army and the Army Reserve for more than 27 years, including service in the Persian Gulf War, before retiring in February of this year, and was also a licensed optician. He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Tonawanda, the American Legion, Tonawandas Post No. 264, the Gastown SportsmensÂ’ Club, the 300th Ordinance Battalion Association, and the Knights of Columbus in Tonawanda. He was the brother of the late Michael Gerhardt.
He is survived by his wife, Sharon (nee Stahl) Gerhardt; his daughter, Melissa A. Gerhardt of Tonawanda; his son, Martin P. Gerhardt of Tonawanda; and his sister, Barbara (Ronald) Rohmer of Liverpool, NY. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews.
Friends may call from 2-4 and 7-9 PM on Tuesday only at the Hamp Funeral Home, Inc., Adam and Seymour Streets, Tonawanda. Funeral services with military honors will be held at 11 AM Wednesday at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Scott and William Streets in Tonawanda. Friends invited. Interment will be cared for privately at Bath National Cemetery, Bath, New York. If desired, memorials to Immanuel Lutheran Church, Scott & William Streets, Tonawanda, NY 14150, are preferred by the family.
August A. Newman, Jr.
Member of Renaissance Club
August “Gus” Newman, Jr., age 79, of Tonawanda, died Tuesday, April 17, 2007 at DeGraff Memorial Hospital after a long illness. Born in North Tonawanda, he was the son of the late August and Daisy (nee Taylor) Newman, Sr. and had been a lifelong resident of the Tonawandas. A Navy Veteran of WWII and the Korean War, he had been employed at Spaulding Fibre in Tonawanda, before retiring in 1986. Mr. Newman was a member of the Renaissance Club and had been a volunteer fireman in Tonawanda. He was the husband of the late Mary Eileen (nee Heap) Newman, who died in 1980.
He is survived by his wife, Rita (nee French) Newman; and his son, August A. Newman, III, of Tonawanda. Also surviving are two loving grandchildren, Danielle and Dylan Chatten.
There is no visitation. Interment was cared for privately at White Chapel Memorial Park in Amherst. Family and friends are invited to attend a memorial service at 1 PM Friday (May 4) at Friedens United Church of Christ, 1280 North French Road, Amherst. If desired, memorials to the SPCA, 205 Ensminger Road, Tonawanda, NY 14150, are preferred by the family. Arrangements by the Hamp Funeral Home, Inc., Adam and Seymour Streets, Tonawanda.
Brenda L. Fisher
1979 Graduate of Riverside High School
Brenda (nee Richeal) Fisher, age 45, of Buffalo, formerly of Tonawanda, died Wednesday, April 18, 2007 at St. Francis Nursing Home, after a long illness. Born in the Town of Tonawanda, she was the daughter of the late Patricia Greiner. A 1979 graduate of Riverside High School, she was a member of the International Poets Society and had worked as a medical receptionist for the Buffalo Otolaryngology Group, before becoming ill. She was the sister of the late Kathy Wright.
She is survived by her son, Corey Fisher of Tonawanda; her daughter, Caitlyn Fisher of the Town of Tonawanda; two sisters, Gloria (Robert) Paveljack of the Town of Tonawanda, and Michelle Greiner of Tonawanda; two brothers, Steven (Ann Marie) Richeal of Tonawanda, and David (Colleen) Greiner of Tonawanda; and her parents, Walter (the late Patricia) Greiner and Richard Richeal. Also surviving are many nieces and nephews, and her former husband, Michael J. Fisher.
The family will receive friends after 10 AM on Monday at the Hamp Funeral Home, Inc., Adam and Seymour Streets in Tonawanda, where a memorial service will be held at 11 AM Monday; the Rev. Mark Siena officiating. Friends invited. If desired, memorials to Calvary Chapel of the Niagara Frontier, 5575 Broadway, Lancaster, NY 14086, are preferred by the family.
