Dorothy Jane (nee Helenbrook) Borne, age 90, of Tonawanda, died Thursday, December 28, 2006 at Schofield Residence after a brief illness. Born February 5, 1916 in Buffalo, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Elsie (nee Fowler) Helenbrook and had been a resident of Tonawanda for more than 45 years. Mrs. Borne was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Parish and the Salvation Army Golden Agers. She was the wife of the late Benjamin B. Borne, who died in 1971, and mother of the late Michael James Borne, who died in 1975.
She is survived by two daughters, Kathleen Borne of Jessup, Maryland, and Sandra (Harold) Lorich of Tonawanda; a son, Robert T. Borne of Tonawanda; three grandchildren, Ronald (Michelle) Lorich, Russell (Patty) Lorich, and Richard Lorich. Also surviving are five great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Friends may call from 2-5 PM Sunday only at the Hamp Funeral Home, Inc., Adam and Seymour Streets, Tonawanda, where funeral services will be held at 5 PM Sunday; the Rev. Msgr. James Connelly officiating. Friends invited. Interment will be cared for privately at Elmlawn Cemetery, Town of Tonawanda. Leonard W. Steves
Lifelong Resident of North Tonawanda
Leonard W. Steves, age 64, of North Tonawanda, died Sunday, December 31, 2006 at DeGraff Memorial Hospital, after a long illness. Born June 11, 1942 in North Tonawanda, he was the son of the late Leonard and Elizabeth (nee Hahn) Steves and had been a lifelong resident of North Tonawanda. Mr. Steves had worked for Biro Brothers Plumbing Contractors for many years.
He is survived by his wife, Connie (nee Winters) Steves; two sons, Leonard (Tammy) Steves of Tonawanda, and Michael (Patty Jo) Steves of Gasport; a brother, Michael (Roseann) Steves; and four sisters, Barbara Steves, Annabell Fresholtz, Marie Swann, and Janet Eastman. Also surviving are six grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
There is no visitation. Services were cared for privately at the convenience of the family. If desired, memorials to the family are preferred. Arrangements by the Hamp Funeral Home, Inc., Adam and Seymour Streets, Tonawanda.
Richard N. Moore
Avid Computer Hobbyist
Richard “Rick” Moore, age 43, of Buffalo, died unexpectedly Sunday, January 7, 2007. Born August 17, 1963 in the Town of Tonawanda, he was the son of the late Bobby G. Moore and had been a resident of the Tonawandas for the greater part of his life. A Navy Veteran of the Persian Gulf War, he was a Customer Service Agent for Time Warner Cable. Rick was a devoted husband and father, and an avid computer hobbyist who was always willing to help anyone who asked him.
He is survived by his wife, Gale (nee Baxter) Moore; his daughter, Kiera S. Moore; two step-sons, Kyle and Neil Kryszak, both of Buffalo; his mother, Carol (nee Doherty) Moore of Tonawanda; three brothers, Robert (Rubyn) Moore of Kenmore, Michael (Sharon) Moore of Tonawanda, and Mark (Stacy) Moore of Amherst; and two sisters, Kathy (Oscar) Seefried of Bristol, Rhode Island, and Jennifer (Michael) Baker of Concord, NY. Also surviving are an aunt, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Friends may call from 2-4 and 7-9 PM on Wednesday only at the Hamp Funeral Home, Inc., Adam and Seymour Streets, Tonawanda. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 AM Thursday at St. Francis of Assisi Church on Broad Street in Tonawanda. Friends invited. Interment will be cared for privately at Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Town of Tonawanda. If desired, memorials to a scholarship fund for Rick’s daughter, Kiera, c/o M & T Bank are preferred by the family.
Raymond E. Latz
Retired from GM Engine Plant
Raymond E. Latz, age 77, of Springville, formerly of Tonawanda, died Friday, January 12, 2007, at his residence after a long illness. Born February 12, 1929 in Buffalo, he was the son of the late Alexander and Alice (nee Dube) Latz and had been a longtime resident of Tonawanda before moving to Springville. Mr. Latz was employed at the General Motors Engine Plant in Tonawanda before retiring in 1986 and was a member of the Buffalo Shooting Club. He was dearly loved and cared for by all of his family and friends, and was the husband of the late Marilynn (nee Bemb) Latz, who died February 23, 1996.
He is survived by his daughter, Lori (Mike) Backhaus of Springville; his son, Steven (Vivian Iglesias) Latz of Lockport; six grandchildren, Stephanie, Andrew, Courtney, Sevana, Scott, and Geoff; and a great-granddaughter, Iyanna.

Barbara A. Abshagen

Barbara (nee Balsdon) Abshagen, age 72, of North Tonawanda, died Friday, January 12, 2007 at her residence, after a long illness. Born September 2, 1934 in Buffalo, she was the daughter of the late Albert and Edith (nee Greene) Balsdon and had been a resident of North Tonawanda for the past 35 years. Mrs. Abshagen was the owner of the former A&M Liquor Store in North Tonawanda, a former member of the Zonta Club of the Tonawandas, and a life member of the Lafayette High School Alumni Association. She was the mother of the late Michael Hooper.
She is survived by her husband, Charles L. Abshagen, Sr.; a son, Steven Hooper of Portland, Maine; two daughters, Terri (Thomas) Tiedemann, Sr. of North Tonawanda, and Sandra Mattina of Buffalo; three step-sons, Charles (Kim) Abshagen, Jr. of Evansville, Indiana, James (Denelle) Abshagen of Grand Island, and Stephen (Gloria) Abshagen of El Paso, Texas; a sister, Lorraine (Robert) Pickel of Grand Island; and a brother, Charles (Ruth) Balsdon of Booth Bay, Maine. Also surviving are 15 grandchildren, 1 great-grandson and several nieces and nephews.

P. Robert Cahill, age 89, of Tonawanda, died Monday, January 15, 2007 at Kenmore Mercy Hospital after a brief illness. Born July 22, 1917 in Sayre, Pennsylvania, he was the son of the late James and Alice (nee Gilmore) Cahill and had been a resident of Tonawanda for the past 60 years. An Army Veteran of WWII, Mr. Cahill was an office manager at the Pepsi Plant in North Tonawanda before retiring in 1982, and was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Parish.
He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth (nee Loncto) Cahill; six sons, Peter (Pat) Cahill of Sterling, Virginia, Paul Cahill of Tonawanda, John (Sue) Cahill of Niagara Falls, NY, Raymond (Mary Beth) Cahill of Tonawanda, Andrew (Kathy) Cahill of Tonawanda, and James (Kathleen) Cahill of North Tonawanda; and a sister, Catherine Scanlin. Also surviving are 10 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Walter Szewczyk

Walter Szewczyk, age 81, of North Tonawanda, died Tuesday, January 23, 2007 at DeGraff Memorial Hospital, after a brief illness. Born May 10, 1925 in Bachowice, Poland, he was the son of the late Stanley and Anna (nee Swiergosz) Szewczyk and had been a resident of North Tonawanda since 1966. Mr. Szewczyk was employed at the Benman Company in North Tonawanda until retiring in 1982. He was an avid musician and accordion player, and was the husband of the late Emily Szewczyk, who died in 1957.
He is survived by his son, Stan (Chris) Szewczyk; two grandchildren, Kiel and Emily Szewczyk; and a sister, Stella (John) Klepaczka, all of North Tonawanda. Also surviving are many nieces and nephews, mostly in Poland.
