Walter L. Smith
A memorial service was held Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the Colden United Methodist Church for Walter L. Smith, 69, of Colden, who died October 12, 2004 in Mercy Hospital after suffering a heart attack. Burial was in Colden Cemetery.
The native of East Concord was a graduate of Griffith Institute, Springville. He worked for the Postal Service for 20 years, retiring in 2000. He worked for Buffalo Forge before going to work for the Postal Service.
He was the husband of Barbara (nee Schluter) Smith; father of Bonnie (Robert) Morsky of Hamburg, Darlene (Charles) Schweikert of Springville, and Deborah (John) Jermain of Springville, and the late Donna Smith; grandfather of Kaseedee and Kodi Jermain, Cory Smith, Chelsey Schweikert and the late Konstance Jermain; great-grandfather of Grant; friend of Elizabeth Smith; brother of Beatrice Morehouse of Hamburg, Mary Crosby of Springville, Alice Luce of Caneadea, June Luce of Rushford, Joan Bly of Sandusky, Otis of Cuba and Joseph of Sacramento, Calif. Dick Gentner
Dick Gentner died on November 11, 2004 in Springville of pneumonia, aged 88, after a full life. He was a life-long resident of Springville, the son of Frank Gentner and Florence Brooks.
Dick was an enthusiastic entrepreneur all his life. As a young man, he owned a tire repair and vulcanizing business on Mechanic Street, and then built and ran a garage and Texaco gas station called Dick's Service Station on West Main Street. Later he opened a Norge appliance store at the same location. He then converted his father's barn into a small factory to build truck bodies. By this time, the business name was shortened to Dick's Service. Subsequent ventures included spreading lime on farm fields, fixing up houses and converting them into rental units, steel fabrication, truck driving, snow plowing, heavy-duty towing, announcing at rodeos and other public events, and excavating with his bulldozer and backhoe. At one time he was highway superintendent for the town of Concord.
Dick was a star trumpet player in the high school band and played occasionally with the Bob Gentner Orchestra.
Dick had a strong presence and was always active in the community. He was a founding member of the Springville Travelers motorcycle club, the Springville Rough Riders horse riding club, and Springville Kiwanis club.
Dick married the late Florence Winter in 1938. They had eight children: Marjorie (Doyle) Mooney of New Haven, Kentucky; Donald (Judith Stewart) of Palo Alto,California; Gerald (died at birth); James (Patsie) of McDade, Texas; Thomas (Patricia) of Prescott, Arizona; Diane (Michael) Leggero of Springville; Leslie (Linda) of Springville; and Audrey (James) Parsons of Delmar, New York. He is also survived by an older brother, Edward Gentner, of Suwannee, Georgia, and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren
Dick always enjoyed horses and vehicles. Later in life, he took up woodworking and made numerous pieces of furniture for his children and grandchildren. He was a man of integrity and a strong personality. Children enjoyed his warmth and humor, his brush-cut hair, and his ability to wiggle his ears.
A funeral mass was celebrated at St. Aloysius Church on Tuesday morning, Nov. 16, at 10:30. The Rev. John Kwiecien officiated He was buried in St. Aloysius Cemetery, Springville. Memorial donations may be sent to St. Aloysius Regional School, Springville.

Roger Kephart
Roger D. Kephart, age 55, December 6, 2004, of East Concord, after a battle with cancer.
He was born in Pennsylvania, the son of Austin and Ruth (Hoover) Kephart, moved to New York in 1953 and lived in a dairy farm.
He and the former Linda Pierce were married at St. Nicodemus Lutheran Church, Marilla, in 1969. The lived in Marilla until 1977 when they bought a dairy farm and moved to Sardinia, which they operated until 1982. He became a well driller and a truck driver for SJB Empire in Hamburg.
He enjoyed John Deere tractors, camping and spending time with his family and friends. He was a member of Springville Moose Lodge #1249, where he held the office of trustee for three years, and was a governor and past governor. He received the Moose of the Year Award in 2003.
He was the husband of Linda; father of Austin (Michelle), Aaron (Amber) and Adam; grandfather of Braedyn; brother of Roy (Alice), Dennis (Lynn), Gary and Merlin (Jody) Kephart, and the late Lee and Loraine Kephart.
Friends may call Thursday afternoon from 2-4 and 7-9 at the Smith-Weismantel Funeral Home, Inc., 271 East Main Street, Spring- ville, where a memorial service will be held Saturday morning at 11 o'clock. The Rev. William L. Kay will officiate.
