EAST HERKIMER - Eva R. Brown, 88, of Main Road, passed away on Friday afternoon, December 8, 2000.
She was born on March 10, 1912, in East Herkimer, daughter of the late Charles and Emma Christman Richard.
A lifelong East Herkimer Resident, she was educated in Herkimer Schools.
On May 21, 1930, she married Maynard H. Brown in Mohawk, a loving union of sixty-two years until his passing on January 19, 1993.
For ten years, she and her husband owned and operated Browns Tavern in East Herkimer.
She also owned and operated her own Beauty shop in East Herkimer before retiring in the 1970's.
She was a member of the Herkimer Reformed Church, Evening Star Valley Chapter #82 Order of the Eastern Star, and the U.A.R.D.A. Temple #24 Daughters of the Nile.
Surviving her are one son, Maynard Jr., and his wife Johanne Brown of East Herkimer; a sister Francis and her husband Gerney Butler of East Herkimer; a son-in-law Clarence Rivenburg of East Herkimer; four grandchildren, Sharon Brown-Burns and her husband Neal, Ronald Brown, Maynard "Rick", III and his wife Kelly Brown, Terrance "Terry" Rivenburg; three great-grandchildren, Jennifer, Ericka and Maynard "Ricky" Brown IV, several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Besides her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by an infant son, Charles J. Brown; a daughter Natalie Rivenburg one brother Ross Richard and a sister Irene Jacobson.
Funeral service will be on Monday at 10:30 a.m. in Fenner Funeral Home Inc., 115 Court Street, Herkimer with the Reverend Donald Battjes, pastor of the Herkimer Reformed Church officiating.
Interment will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery.
The family will be present to receive relatives and friends in the Funeral Home on Sunday 1-3 & 7-9 p.m.
Memorial donations may be made to the Sue Campagna Herkimer County Hospice, the Herkimer Reformed Church, or a charity of choice.
Envelopes will be available in the funeral home.
Edward Murphy
ILION - Edward Murphy, 82, formerly of East North Street, died Saturday, Jan. 13, 2001, in Valley Health Services Inc., where he had resided since last July.
Born June 14, 1918, in Bolivar, he was the son of the late Almond and Lizzie Chadwick Murphy.
A local resident since 1983, coming from Rome, he had resided with the Miller family since 1993.
He is survived by one sister, Julia Horton of Cuba, N.Y., and several nieces and nephews.
Four brothers and two sisters preceded him in death.
Funeral service and interment in Oak Hill Cemetery will take place later this spring.
Arrangements are with Fenner Funeral Home Inc., 115 Court St., Herkimer.
Anne Carswell
HERKIMER - Anne Carswell 94, formerly of 206 Park Avenue died on Monday morning, July 3, 2000 in Faxton Hospital, Utica.
She was born on July 7, 1905 in Herkimer, daughter of the late John J. and Margaret Johnson Donovan.
A lifelong area resident she was educated in Little Falls and went on to Oneonta Normal School where she received her teaching certification.
On June 16, 1928, she married Harry N. Carswell in Greenwich, NY.
A blessed union of fifty-six years until his passing on September 29, 1984.
Anne had a special love for children and teaching.
She had taught school in Saint Mary s School, Little Falls, Battenville Schools and Saint Francis deSales School, Herkimer.
For twenty years she was the cook for Saint Francis deSales Convent, Herkimer retiring in 1991.
A devoted wife and mother, in her spare time she loved to read and was always ready to travel with her family where ever they would go.
She was a member of Saint Francis deSales Church.
Surviving her are four daughters and their husbands; Mary and Charles E. Crandall, Jr. of Herkimer, Anne and Daniel Moller of Davisburg, MI, Helen and Renny Abrams of Dover Plains, Lois and Joseph Cassillo of Herkimer, two brothers: The Reverend Monsignor Walter Donovan of Atlanta, GA, Joseph and his wife, Nancy Donovan of Gloversville, a daughter-in-law: Eleanor Carswell of Herkimer, twenty-one grandchildren, twenty-nine great grandchildren, one great-great-grandson, several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Besides her husband, Harry, she was preceded in death by her son, Walter Carswell, this past January, a grandson Jude Carswell, one brother; John J. Donovan and three sisters; Helen Donovan, Elizabeth Wright and Rosalie Gossin.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in Saint Francis deSales Church at 9:30 AM.
The Reverend Peter Nabozny pastor and The Reverend Monsignor Walter Donovan will officiate.
Interment will follow in Calvary Cemetery.
The family will be present in the funeral home to receive relatives and friends Tuesday (today) from 5:00 to 8:00 PM.
Memorial donations may be made to the Saint Francis deSales School Library.

Carl Nehl
HERKIMER - Carl Nehl, 85, of 104 N. Washington St., passed away Saturday morning, Feb. 17, 2001, in Folts Homes, Herkimer.
He was born Nov. 15, 1915, in New York City, son of the late Herman and Anna Frederick Nehl.
Mr. Nehl was raised and educated in New York City public schools.
On Oct. 25, 1941, he married Catherine Sauer in New York, a loving and devoted union of 47 years until her passing on Feb. 28, 1989.
An honorably discharged U.S. Army veteran of World War II, he served in the European Theater.
In 1949, he joined the New York City Police Department, retiring in 1963 with the rank of sergeant.
In 1964, he and his family moved to Rome where he worked in security for Griffiss Air Force Base, retiring in 1977.
He came to Herkimer in 1997.
Carl was happiest when he was surrounded by his friends and family, especially his grandchildren.
Children warmed up to him very easily and quickly.
During his years with the police department he was affectionately known to the kids as Sergeant Nehl.
He enjoyed hunting and fishing and in later years coin collecting and antiquing.
Surviving him are three sons and their wives, Frederick and Linda Nehl of Las Vegas, Nev., Richard and Maureen Nehl of Waldorf, Md. and Stephen and Lisa Nehl of Herkimer; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral service will be on Wednesday at 11 a.m. in Fenner Funeral Home Inc., 115 Court St., Herkimer.
The Rev. David Oertel, chaplain of the Folts Homes, will officiate.
Interment will take place later this spring in Rome Cemetery.
The family will be present in the funeral home to receive relatives and friends Tuesday from 4-6 p.m.
