Louise R. Waterbury

Herkimer - Louise R. Waterbury, 81, Gordon Ave., passed away at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital, Utica on Monday December 11, 2000.

(Marie) Louise Russell Waterbury was born in Waynesville, NC, on November 6, 1919, the daughter of the late J.T. and Helena Stalcup Russell, Sr.

She graduated from the Waynesville Township High School in 1937.

She was married to Elwood F. "Tod" Waterbury on August 16, 1942 in Raleigh, NC, and had made her home in Herkimer, NY, since December 1945.

Louise held various positions in county and state government agencies in North Carolina.

She was employed for two years by the Gloo & Gloo Insurance offices in Herkimer.

In 1954, joined the staff of Herkimer Central School, where she was secretary for five years at the Margaret Tuger School and one year at L.W. Bills School, before taking the position of secretary to the superintendent of schools in 1960.

She worked for the Herkimer Central School System for 27 years, serving as secretary to four superintendents and was Clerk of the Board of Education for four years.

She retired in July of 1981.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Herkimer, for over 50 years, where she held offices in the Sunday School, M&M Circle, Women’s Council, and 100% class.

She also served on the Diaconal Board, Board of Finance, and various committees of the church.

She was a member of the Evening Valley Star Chapter # 82 of the Order of Eastern Star and the NY State Association of Educational Secretaries.

In recent years, she was a volunteer for the Herkimer County Historical Society and Valley Helpers at Valley Health Services, Inc.

Besides her husband of 58 years, she is survived by two daughters, Laraine and Jan, both of Herkimer; one sister, Florence Garner, of Bethel, NC; one brother and sister-in-law, Rufus and Eloise Russell, of Bartlett, TN; a sister-in-law, Elizabeth Hilts, of Herkimer, several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by four brothers and four sisters.

A memorial service will be on Wednesday at 3:30pm in the First Baptist Church, Herkimer, with the Reverend Jeremy Spencer officiating.

Interment will be in Mt. View Memorial Gardens Town of Little Falls, next spring.

The Family will be present in Fenner Funeral Home, Inc, 115 Court Street, Herkimer, to receive relatives and friends on Tuesday (TODAY) 5:00 to 8:00pm.

Memorial Donations may be made to the First Baptist Church of Herkimer, or the Herkimer County Historical Society.

Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Ethel V. Sharp

HERKIMER - Ethel V. Sharp, 80, of the Country Manor, Middleville Road, formerly of 547 Lake Street, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Sunday morning, August 20, 2000, in St. Luke’s Memorial Hospital Center, New Hartford.

She was born on April 11, 1920 in Wolfeboro, NH, daughter of the late Walter and Edith Glidden Clifford.

Ethel was both raised and educated in Wolfeboro.

On August 13, 1945, she married James L. Sharp in Wolfeboro Falls, NH, a loving and devoted union of forty-six years until his passing on April 15, 1992.

She came to Herkimer with her family in 1947, and in 1995, moved to Mohawk, where she lived with her daughter.

Mrs. Sharp was a member of the First United Methodist Church, where she sang in the Church Choir and belonged to the United Methodist Women.

Her leisure time was spent sewing, crocheting, baking and making teddy bears.

Surviving her are a son, James N., and his wife Dorothy Sharp of Canajoharie; one daughter, with whom she resided, Susan, and her husband, George Walrath, of Mohawk; a sister, Margaret Foss; a sister-in-law, Carol Clifford, both of Farmington, NH; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews, and cousins and her lifelong friend, Celia Wentworth, of Union, NH.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by 3 brothers, Walter, Paul and Irwin; and four sisters, Rose, Theresa, Ruby, and Pearl.

Funeral service will be on Wednesday at 10:00 a.m. in the First United Methodist Church Herkimer, with the Reverend William Otis and Reverend Eugene Kipper, pastor of the Word Christian Center, Herkimer, officiating.

Interment will follow in Mt. View Memorial Gardens, town of Little Falls.

The family will be present in FENNER FUNERAL HOME INC., 115 Court Street, Herkimer, to receive relatives and friends on Tuesday evening from 6-8 p.m.

Betty J. Scanlon

HERKIMER - Betty J. (Wellington) Scanlon, 77, of Eastern Gardens, died Friday morning, Dec. 8, 2000, in Faxton Hospital, Utica.

Daughter of the late John and Mary Nabinger Wellington, she was born July 4, 1923, in Herkimer.

A lifelong Herkimer resident, she was a graduate of Herkimer High School "Class of 1943."

For over 15 years, she worked for Alegro Shoe Company in Little Falls, retiring in 1987.

Betty was a devoted mother who loved her home and family.

She was of the Methodist faith.

Surviving are two sons, Reginald "Skip" Scanlon and his fiancée, Carol Piersma, of Bridgewater, and Dennis and his wife, Sandra Scanlon, of Liverpool; one daughter, Sue Ellen, and her husband, Ronald Bongiorno, of Herkimer; two brothers, Gerald Wellington of Ilion, and Ronald and his wife, Alice Wellington, of Herkimer; a sister, Rita and her husband, Robert Fudjack, of East Herkimer; a sister-in-law, Betty Wellington of Ilion; eight grandchildren, Heather and Nicole Scanlon, Ronald and Vincent Bongiorno, Kimberly Baker, Shawn Berberick, Robert and Brian Piersma, five great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews, cousins and her dear friends, Dorothy, Barb and Erv.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by four brothers, John, Robert, Glenn and Phillip Wellington; a sister, Beatrice Wellington; two sisters-in-laws, Virginia and Bernadette Wellington.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. in Fenner Funeral Home Inc., 115 Court St., Herkimer.

The Rev. William Otis, pastor of the First United Methodist Church, Herkimer, will officiate.

Interment will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery.

The family will be present in the funeral home to receive relatives and friends Monday, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m.

Memorial donations may be made to Faxton Hospital, Third Floor North, or the Sue Campagna Herkimer County Hospice.

Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Bertron Reynolds

MOHAWK - Bertron Reynolds, 87, of State Highway # 168, passed away on Monday morning, December 4, 2000, in Folts Homes, Herkimer, with his loving family at his bedside.

He was born on March 1, 1913 in Mayfield, son of the late Frank and Eliza Hoffman Reynolds.

Bert was educated in the Fish House School in Sacandagua.

It was on September 6, 1937, that he married his beloved wife, Margaret, in the Parsonage of the Jordanville Church.

He and his family have resided in Mohawk since 1950, coming from Ilion.

Throughout his life, he had worked as a Tenant Farmer, owned and operated a trucking company and did Black Top Paving.

For twenty-seven years, he worked for UNIVAC, retiring in 1972.

His leisure time was spent hunting, fishing, camping and woodworking.

He was of the Methodist faith.

Surviving besides his wife of sixty-three years, Margaret, are three sons; Richard and his wife, Judy Reynolds, of Brookville, FL, Robert Reynolds of Ilion, Raymond and his wife, Brenda Reynolds, of Mohawk, four daughters; Beverly Liddle, Barbara Gage, Joyce and her husband, Gordon Roberts, Janice and Thomas Mayton, all of Mohawk, two sisters-in-law; Anna Reynolds of Mohawk, Anna Reynolds of Richfield, fourteen grandchildren, twenty-two great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild, several nieces, nephews, cousins, two special friends, Harold Miller and John Ramsey.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters; Millicent Cosselman and Hazel Price, four brothers; Marvin, Hiram, Henry and Ralph Reynolds, a son-in-law; DeForrest Liddle and a great-granddaughter, Katelyn Reynolds.

Funeral service will be on Thursday at 11:00 AM in Fenner Funeral Home Inc., 115 Court Street, Herkimer.

The Reverend William Harkins, pastor of the Church of Christ Uniting, Richfield Springs, will officiate.

Interment in Mountain View Memorial Gardens, town of Little Fallsc, will be next spring.

The family will be present in the funeral home to receive relatives and friends on Wednesday from 4:00 to 7:00 PM.

Mr. Reynolds family would like to thank the VanHornesville Volunteer Fire Department, Dr. Ramachander Nanduri and the staff of Folts Homes for their care and compassion during his illness.

Memorial donations may be made to the VanHornesville Volunteer Fire Department or the Folts Homes, Herkimer.

Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
