HERKIMER - Rozell F. Cool, 65, of Bellinger Avenue, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, February 15, 2001 in Little Falls Hospital.
He was born on March 27, 1935 in Herkimer, son of the late Rozell L. and Alta Scanlon Cool.
Rozell was raised in Herkimer and was a graduate of Herkimer High School.
In 1953, he entered the United States Army, where he proudly served in both Korea and Vietnam.
After a twenty-year career, he was honorably discharged with the rank of Sergeant First Class.
From 1973 to 1982, he worked as a civilian for the Toby Hanna Army Depot.
He returned to Herkimer in 1983 to take the position of Security Chief for Herkimer Tool & Machine Company retiring in 1987.
Mr. Cool was currently employed with Collis Hardware Store, Herkimer.
On January 16, 1998, he married Collene Bertrand in New Hartford.
Rozell had a strong love for God and Country.
He was a member of the First United Methodist Church Herkimer, a member of Michael Pliseck VFW Post # 4915, Herkimer and the American Legion Post # 38, Herkimer.
Surviving besides his loving wife Collene, are seven daughters, Margaret and her husband, Dana Muzzy, of Herkimer, Vera Abbott and Dorothy Cool, both of Ft. Plain, Andrea L. Cool of Duryea, PA, Susan and her husband, Ryan Toole, Brianne and Kimberlee Godlewski of Herkimer; two brothers and their wives, Leslie and Marie Cool of Mohawk, William and Sally Cool of Phoenix, AZ; a father-in-law and his wife, George and Lydia Bertrand, of New Hartford; his mother-in-law and her husband, Carol and Bill Bruso, of Ilion; five grandchildren, several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Douglas and Louis Cool.
His sister, Elaine Culver, passed away on February 16, 2001.
Funeral service will take place on Monday at 9:00 a.m. in FENNER FUNERAL HOME Inc., 115 Court Street, Herkimer.
The Reverend William Otis, pastor of the First United Methodist Church, Herkimer, will officiate.
Interment with full military honors will be conducted later this spring in Oak Hill Cemetery.
The family will be present in the funeral home to receive relatives and friends Sunday from 2:00 4:00 and 7:00 9:00 p.m.
Memorial donations may be made to First United Methodist Church Herkimer.
Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
Members of the Michael Pliseck VFW Post #4915 are asked to meet at the funeral home on Sunday evening for services at 7:30 p.m.
Seymour E. Coutant
Seymour E. Coutant, age 86, of Ronald Street, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, April 21, 2001 in Bassett Healthcare, Cooperstown.
He was born on December 26, 1914, in Bloomington, town of Rosendale, Ulster County, NY, son of the late Ennis S. and Gertrude D. Niebergall Coutant.
Seymour was raised and educated in Kingston, NY, where his ancestors were the original settlers to the area.
He furthered his education by attending the College of Forestry at Syracuse University; he graduated in 1939 with a Bachelor's Degree of Science in Forestry.
On May 31, 1941, he married Natalie Durose in New York City.
They have resided in Herkimer since 1951.
He was employed as a Professional Forester by the U.S. Forest Service, United States Army Corp. of Engineers, and the Department of Environmental Sciences of the State of New York, retiring in 1980 after having served as Regional Forester in Herkimer and Oneida Counties.
An honorably discharged U.S. Army veteran, he served in both World War II and Korea.
In World War II, he served in the 10th Mountain Division as an officer with the 1001st Forestry Battalion in Germany attached to the SHAF Headquarters.
In 1941, he became an original member of the U.S. Army Ski Patrol, training in Old Forge, NY, and Mount Ranier, Washington, and took part in the formation of its' 10th Mountain Division at Camp Hale, Colorado.
In 1951, he was recalled to active duty for the Korean Conflict and was stationed with the Post Engineer Office at Camp Pickett, VA.
He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Herkimer, the Society of American Foresters, Herkimer Lodge No. 1439 B.P.O.E., the Mohawk Valley Country Club, the Ulster County Genealogical Society and the General Herkimer B.S.A. Camp Russell at Woodgate.
Mr. Coutant was actively engaged in conservation education since 1978 at the Forestry Recreation Facilities in Herkimer and Oneida Counties, its parks, campsites, and historical sites.
He was also actively involved in genealogy work from his own home.
Surviving, besides his loving wife of 59 years, Natalie, are two sons, John E. and his wife, Elizabeth Coutant, of Ringoes, NJ, Richard A. and his wife, Kendi Coutant, of Apex, NC; one sister; Frieda Budman of Oklahoma City, OK; five grandchildren, David E. Coutant of Indianapolis, IN, and Michael A. Coutant of Columbus, OH, Zachary, Max and Madeline Coutant of Apex, NC, several nieces and nephews.
Funeral service will be on Wednesday at 10:00 AM in the First United Methodist Church, Herkimer, with the Reverend David Oertel officiating.
Interment will take place in Pleasant View Cemetery, Ludlow, VT, at a later time convenient to the family.
The family will be present to receive relatives and friends in Fenner Funeral Home, Inc., 115 Court Street, Herkimer, on Tuesday from 6:00 to 8:00 PM.
As an alternative to floral bouquets, Seymour expressed that those who wish "Observe Arbor Day and plant a tree for me."
James A. Covey, Sr.
ILION -- James A. Covey, Sr., 73, of Elizabethtown Road, passed away Thursday morning, Oct. 18, 2001, in St. Elizabeth Medical Center, Utica.
He was born May 17, 1928, in South Ilion, son of the late Clifford and Pearl Haver Covey.
He was raised and educated in Herkimer schools.
On Feb. 18, 1950, he married Leona P. Madison in Herkimer.
James had worked for Shrine Theaters as a doorman in the 1950s.
He worked as an auto re-conditioner for Castle Ford and Thomas Ford companies and, later, was a chef for the Empire Diner in Herkimer, retiring in the 1970s.
Surviving besides his wife of 51 years, Leona, are two sons, James A. Covey, Jr., of Utica, and Fred E. and his wife, Dawn Covey, of Cherry Valley; two daughters, Carol and her husband, Thomas Jowett, of Bridgewater and Katherine and her husband, Robert Apel, of Utica; a sister, Betty Jane Markwardt and her husband, Edward, of Zephyrhills, Fla.; nine grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral service will be on Saturday at 11 a.m. in Fenner Funeral Home, Inc., 115 Court St., Herkimer.
Interment will follow in Rural Park Cemetery, Inghams Mills.
The family will be present in the funeral home to receive relatives and friends on Friday from 7-9 p.m.

Charles E. Crandall, Jr.
HERKIMER - Charles E. Crandall, Jr. 69, of North Main Street, passed away on Saturday February 3, 2001 in his home with his loving family at his side.
He was born on November 1, 1931 in Herkimer, son of the late Charles E. and Catherine VanAlstyne Crandall.
A lifelong Herkimer resident, he was a graduate of Herkimer High School "Class of 1949" and attended Yale University graduating in 1953.
On April 24, 1954, he married Mary Carswell in St. Francis deSales Church Herkimer.
An honorably discharged U.S. Navy veteran of the Korean Conflict, he served our country from 1953 to 1957, was commissioned Ensign in 1954 and had served three years on the USS Taconic, attached to the Sixth Fleet in the Atlantic and Mediterranean Areas.
He completed his service with the Naval Reserve in 1967, obtaining the rank of Naval Lieutenant Commander.
Upon leaving active service, he resumed his education at Albany Law School, graduating in 1962.
He was admitted to the New York State Bar in December of that year.
Returning to Herkimer, he was associated with the Irving Basloe Law Firm until May 9, 1966, when he started his own law practice.
To all that knew him, he was an outgoing man who served to help others and he will not be forgotten.
During the 1960's, he was Assistant District Attorney for Herkimer County, and was later appointed as Assistant County Attorney until his recent retirement.
Over the years, he was the Attorney for various municipalities in the Mohawk Valley.
He was a member and past president of the Herkimer Bar Association, he had served as a member of the Herkimer Hospital Memorial Board of Managers from 1970 to 1983 and from 1974 to 1977 was Board President.
Currently, he was the Attorney for the Mohawk Homestead Advisory Board.
He was a member of the Herkimer Lodge # 1439 B.P.O.E..
A member of Herkimer Lodge No. 423 F. & A.M., where he had served as Master in 1966, the Mohawk Valley Scottish Rite Club, Valley of Utica A.A.S.R. 32nd degree, the Ziyara Shrine, where he was Potentate in 1978, he was also Past President of the Mohawk Valley Shrine Club and a member of the Utica Court #163 Royal Order of Jesters.
He had a strong love for the out-of-doors and was an avid hunter.
He was a member of the Herkimer Reformed Church and a past member of its' Consistory.
Surviving, besides his wife of forty-six years, Mary, are two sons and their wives, Charles E., III and Isabella Crandall, John H. and Debra Crandall, all of Herkimer; two daughters, Susan A. Crandall of Ilion, Catherine Beth Crandall of Corning; seven grandchildren, Charles E., IV, Nicole, Shane, Ashley, Kyle, John H. Crandall, Jr. and Sean, all of Herkimer; four sister-in-laws, Anne Moller, and her husband, Daniel, of Davisburg, MI, Helen Abrams, and her husband, Renny, of Dover Plains, Lois Cassillo and her husband, Joseph, of Herkimer, Eleanor Carswell of Herkimer, three cousins, Patricia Lucas and her husband, Stuart, of Rochelle Park, NJ, Kenneth Brown of Alva, OK, Sara Espy of Wilmington, DE, five nieces and fourteen nephews.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother-in-law, Walter Carswell.
Funeral service will be on Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. in the Herkimer Reformed Church.
The Reverend Donald Battjes, pastor, The Reverend Fred Mueller, former pastor, The Reverend Mark Cunningham, pastor of St. Francis deSales Church, Herkimer, and the Reverend Monsignor Walter Donovan will officiate.
Interment with full military honors will take place later this spring in Oak Hill Cemetery at a time to be announced.
