Jane C. Gilbert

HERKIMER - Jane C. Gilbert, 79, of Gray Street, passed away Tuesday, April 3, 2001, in Faxton Hospital, Utica, after a courageous battle with cancer.

She was born June 16, 1921, in Herkimer, daughter of the late Eugene and Mary Hamilton Cress.

A lifelong Herkimer resident, she was first educated in St. Francis de Sales School, then went on to Herkimer High School, where she graduated with the "Class of 1939."

On July 6, 1946, she married George E. Gilbert, Jr. in St. Francis de Sales Church, Herkimer, by the Rev. Thomas DiPace.

During World War II, Jane worked as a secretary for the Remington Arms Co., Ilion.

Later, she became the registrar of vital statistics for the village of Herkimer, and was last employed as the law library clerk in the Herkimer County Surrogate's Office, retiring in 1986.

She was a member of St. Francis de Sales Church, Herkimer, the Crowley-Barnum American Legion Ladies Auxiliary Post 25, Mohawk, a life member of the Association of Law Libraries of Upstate New York, the Herkimer County Women's Republican Club and, for more than 30 years, served as an election inspector.

Surviving are her husband of 54 years, George; four daughters, Cynthia Lynch of Geneva, Karen Gilbert of Livermore, Calif., Mary Ellyn and her husband Steven Levy of Woodridge and Mary Ann Gilbert of Herkimer; four grandchildren, Karen, Brian and Douglas Lynch and Michael Jon Levy; two sisters-in-law, B.J. Cross of Deltona, Fla., and Valerie Gilbert of Cicero; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Eugene Cress, Jr. and brother-in-law, Donald Gilbert.

Funeral from Fenner Funeral Home Inc., 115 Court St., Herkimer, will be on Saturday at 10 a.m. y

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. in St. Francis de Sales Church, Herkimer.

The Rev. Mark Cunningham, pastor, will officiate.

Interment will be on Monday at 1 p.m. in Oak Hill Cemetery.

The family will be present in the funeral home to receive relatives and friends on Friday from 4 until 8 p.m.

Members of the Crowley-Barnum American Legion Post 25 Ladies Auxiliary are asked to meet at the funeral home at 6:45 p.m. Friday, for services at 7 p.m.

Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Pauline Greene

Herkimer - Pauline Greene, age 82, formerly, died on Monday, November 5, 2001 in Valley Health Service, after a long illness.

She was born on July 21, 1919 in Herkimer, a daughter of the late James H. and Florence Fournier Greene.

A lifelong area resident, she was a graduate of Herkimer schools.

She was a member of St. Francis deSales Church, Herkimer.

Pauline is survived by two brother, James Greene, of South Portland, Maine, Thomas Greene of Cape Coral, Florida; three sisters, Lucille Grabowski of Johnstown, Mary Greene of Rochester, Clothilde Greene of Scotia, several nieces and nephews.

Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Shirley Campbell and a brother, John Greene.

Funeral from Fenner Funeral Home, Inc., 115 Court Street, Herkimer, on Saturday at 11:30 a.m.

A mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in Saint Francis deSales Church, Herkimer, at 12 noon, with the Reverend Mark Cunninhgam, pastor officiating.

Interment will follow in Calvary cemetery.

The family will be present in the funeral home to receive relatives and friends on Saturday, from 10:00 a.m. until 11:30 a.m.

Memorial donations may be made to Valley Health Service.

Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Lyle Griffin

HERKIMER - Lyle Griffin, age 78, of Church Street, formerly of Little Falls, and the town of Stark, died peacefully on Thursday afternoon, October 25, 2001 in Valley Health Services after a long illness.

He was born on June 14, 1923, in the town of German Flats, a son of the late Irving and Alma Griffin.

In 1951, he met Stella Seeley.

Their marriage took place on July 18, 1959 in Paines Hollow.

They made their home in the town of Stark, sharing a devoted union of 37 years, until her passing on January 11, 1996.

Lyle was a loving man who enjoyed his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He had worked construction for many years before taking the position of truck driver and mechanic for the Herkimer County Highway Department, where he worked until 1980.

He is survived by a son, Keith, and wife, Angelia Edick, of Rosemont Minn., his daughter, Alyce Congdon, with whom he resided; seven stepchildren, several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; close friends of family, Fred and Joanne Mergenthalen, of West Winfield, a sister-in-law, Dorothy Daley, of Dolgeville; a brother-in-law, Robert Hollum, Sr., of Mohawk, and a special friend and nurse of many years, Sharon Putnam, of Little Falls.

Besides his parents and wife Stella, he was preceded in death by his brother, Granville Griffin, a sister, Evelyn Hollum and a brother-in-law, William Daley.

Funeral service will be on Monday at 1:00p.m. in Fenner Funeral Home with Pastor Michael Hughes, of Mt. Zion Ministries, Utica.

Interment will follow in Curtis Cemetery, Salisbury.

The family will be present in the funeral home to receive relatives and friends one hour prior to the funeral service (from noon - till 1:00 p.m.)

Dorothy Harter

ILION - Dorothy Caroline Harter, 90, of Prospect Avenue, died peacefully on Sunday May 13, 2001 in her home.

She was born on May 23, 1910, in Ilion, a daughter of the late Norman and Mary Kreuzer Rowell.

She was raised and educated in East Frankfort.

On August 1, 1936, she was united in marriage to Raymond "Brick" Joseph Harter in the Old Annunciation Church by the Reverend James Nolan.

A loving and devoted marriage of 44 years until his passing on June 23, 1980.

For several years, she had worked as an assembler with Remington Rand and the Remington Arms.

During the mid-fifties, she joined the school system as one of the first crossing guards in Ilion.

She retired in 1958 to help raise her grandchildren.

She was a member of Annunciation Church Ilion.

She enjoyed gardening and growing flowers, was a member of the East Schuyler Community Club; however, she was happiest when surrounded by her family, especially her grandchildren.

Dorothy had resided in Schuyler until 1987.

Since then, she has lived with her son and daughter-in-law who took care of her.

Surviving are her devoted son and daughter-in-law, Edward and Gail Harter of Ilion; a loving daughter and her husband, Marlene and Dale Christie of Frankfort; five cherished grandchildren, Cynthia Grippe and her husband, Fran, Edward R. Harter and his wife, Lori, Sally Juliano and her husband, Ben, Marie Zarecki and her husband, Scott and Louie Christie; eight great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.

Besides her husband, Raymond, she was preceded her in death by three brothers, Claude, Willard, and Charles Rowell and a sister, Helen Lyman.

A graveside service will be held on Wednesday at 10:00 am in St. Mary's Cemetery, town of Little Falls, with the Reverend Joseph Bennitende, pastor of Annunciation Church, officiating.

There are no calling hours.

Memorial donation may be made to the American Heart Association.

Funeral arrangements are with Fenner Funeral Home, Inc., 115 Court Street, Herkimer.
